The Battle Box The Battle Box was a British underground command center located at Fort Canning Hill. It functioned as a part of the Malaya Command headquarters. Further, the Malaya Command headquarters defended Singapore and Malaya during World War II. The site was restored in 2016. Further, it is a site that speaks about the true reasons behind the fall of Singapore during World War II. So, it is an important educational and tourist destination in Singapore today. Lieutenant-General Arthur E. Percival and Allied Forces decided to surrender to the Japanese Forces at The Battle Box. The surrender happened on 15th February 1942.  4. Haw Par Villa For me, Haw Par Villa is one of the scariest sites I have visited. According to Chinese mythology, there are ten hells, and Haw Par Villa mimics them.  However, the scariest thing about Haw Par Villa is that you can hear screams from this area at night. Also, many people believe that the statues here are real human beings covered in wax. Further, the local people call it one of the doors of hell.  Even if you are not up for its haunted story, you can visit this site to see the 1000 statues and dioramas. These structures are the best displays of Asian craftsmanship. Further, the stories of 10 hells presented here are the fusion of various Oriental beliefs and philosophies like Hinduism, Taoism, and Buddhism.  Haw Par Villa, or the ten courts of hell, are “the result of the mixing of four different religions and philosophies: Buddhism, Taoism, Hinduism, Confucianism.”Eisen Teo, the chief curator of Hell’s Museum 5. Fort Siloso Fort Siloso gets its name from the Malayan word Siloso, meaning rock. It is the only coastal fort in Singapore and has played a significant role in the country’s defense. This fort has an on-site military museum filled with the memorabilia of World War II.  The most striking elements of the museum are tunnels, fortified military structures, interactive video documentaries, and wax figures. Reflections At Bukit Chandu Reflections at Bukit Chandu is an interpretative center for dark tourism in Singapore for educational and historical purposes.  Today, the Reflections at Bukit Chandu tell the tales of the Battle of Pasir Panjang in 1942. The Battle Point 226 here is a testament to how the Malay Regiment stood against the Japanese troops.  The Malay Regiment began its journey with a recruit of 25 recruits in 1933. Within 10 years, this “experimental company” was strong enough to combat the Imperial Japanese forces.  The Japanese killed a hundred men from the Malay Regiment, and a few more were butchered as they refused to take off their uniforms during the surrender of Singapore.  Reflections at Bukit Chandu commemorates and presents the sacrifice of the men in the Malay Regiment as they lived up to the “Ta'at Setia,” or “Faithful and true” motto.  You must explore the following collectibles at Reflections At Bukit Chandu. St Andrew's Cathedral, Singapore  St. Andrew’s Cathedral is another important landmark for dark tourism in Singapore because of its association with World War II.  In 1942, Singapore fell, and this cathedral started functioning as an emergency hospital. The Australian Field Ambulances repurposed the cathedral for the treatment of a large number of wounded troops and civilians.  That was the time of aerial bombardments and the roar of the artillery. Furthermore, the floor and walls of the church remained covered with the blood of the wounded and deceased.  So, if you are a dark tourism enthusiast or someone interested in knowing about the wartime history, you must visit the War Memorial Wing added to the section in 1952.  This War Memorial is permanent, and it commemorates the lives lost in WWII.  Moreover, even today, you can see the battlefield scars. At least one stick of bombs hit the ground.  Also, there are tombstones and plaques inside the cathedral. These were built to remember the missionaries and members of the Civil Service who were imprisoned and lost their lives to protect the city.  In addition, during wars and difficult times, the church grounds became the refuge of helpless people.  The Christian leaders ministered to these people in the church grounds. This happened even during the Japanese Imperial Army attacks.  8. The Orchard Road: Glittering Malls Built Over Graves  Today, when you explore Orchard Road in Singapore, you will find the most sprawling malls in Singapore.  However, it is also a dark tourism destination in Singapore because of the grim history of the area.  Furthermore, there have been reports of paranormal sightings in the area. Let’s delve deeper.  The Graveyard Connection  As I have mentioned, a large portion of Orchard Road, especially the Ngee Ann City area, was once a graveyard.  Once, it had around 25000 to 30000 graves.  The Feng Shui Architecture  In the 1990s, the Ngee Ann City was built on the graveyard.  The developers then consulted the Feng Shui experts to pacify the spirits of the dead.  In fact, the architecture of the building shows a prominent influence of the Feng Shui traditions.  The twin towers look like red joss sticks, and the curved frontage of the building looks like a traditional Chinese tombstone.  Deaths In The Grisly Hotel  Some upscale hotels in the Orchard Road area have some really dark pasts.  Among those incidents, the murder of a Thai woman in 1974 was the scariest. The Death Valley National Park has geological bounties that will make you feel more than alive. The “hottest, driest, and lowest” national park enjoys the juxtaposition of Badwater, the lowest elevation in North America, Eureka Dunes, the highest sand dunes in North America, and snow-capped Telescope Peak.  You can easily call the landscape of the national park dramatic, or an explorer can find it to be the most amazing outdoor playground with volcanic rocks, mountains, deep canyons, the highest sand dunes, and old rivers.  From the humming songs of the sand dunes to the soothing sound of the flowing stream, this place is music to the ears of the visitors.  No wonder that despite its extreme weather conditions, the park had an impressive 1,099,632 visitors in 2023. (Source) Death Valley Hiking Trails (Easy, Moderate, And Difficult) That Should Be On Your Bucket List  The hiking trails here come with varying difficulty levels. Here, I have discussed some of the most popular and interesting hiking trails with easy, moderate, and strenuous difficulty levels in three different sections.  Best Hiking Trails In Death Valley National Park For Beginners (Easy) Death Valley is not probably the first place you will think of as someone new to trekking or hiking. However, this national park has some trails suitable for beginners. Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes The Mesquite flat sand dunes, with a 2.3-mile distance, are the best creations of sand and wind. The enclosure of mountains works as a barrier to protect the sand from getting blown away.  The sand here creates ripples and dunes, and the area gets its name from mesquite trees found in abundance here. The Timbisha Shoshone tribe here makes flour from the mesquite tree bean pods. This variety of flour is sold in many specialty stores these days.  Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes is also home to nocturnal kangaroo rats and rattlesnakes. Badwater Salt Flat A vast salt flat covering around 200 square miles, it is the most surreal place in Death Valley. The lowest elevation point in North America, Badwater Salt Flat, was a large inland Lake Manly in ancient times.  The landscape looks interesting with geometric salt polygons. You can take an easy walk through the stretch and have a look at the imposing Black Mountains and Telescope Peak.  Moderate Death Valley Hiking Trails  Most hiking trails in Death Valley are moderate in their difficulty level. Here, I will give a brief overview of the most talked-about ones in the park.  Darwin Falls Hike Darwin Falls got its name from Erasmus Darwin French, an army physician. It is one of the very few perennial waterfalls in this national park.  The waterfall runs into a shallow pool with green vegetation around it. The trail looks easy. However, you experience difficulty when you try to get back to the Caldera Rim. Further, from the very beginning of this hike, you will experience unevenness in the elevation.  As you take the black trail surrounded by dark hills, don’t forget to catch a glimpse of the green vegetation, which is very rare in the national park. Here, you will also love the view of streaks of dark orange in the formations, along with loose white sand.  You can even hike deep down the crater filled with pyroclastic deposits.  Fall Canyon Death Valley This 3.5-hour hiking route comes with moderate to strenuous difficulty levels. Occasional flash floods form the narrow gorge and steep sides here.  The cave-like twisted passageways here look most amazing, and a touch of blue on the smooth granite walls adds a mystic charm to the place. Hiking to the Badlands includes hiking to Zabriskie Point, the most picturesque location in the park. It is also a favorite sunset and sunrise point, and you will love clicking photographs here.  After watching the Sunrise at Zabriskie Point, you can continue hiking through the Badlands loop, which is made of sediments. Walk for 2.7 miles to reach one of the most important geological terrains of North America. The terrain, with a rugged beauty, used to be part of an ancient lakebed.  Difficult Death Valley Hiking Trails  This national park has many challenging hiking trails, and exploring some of them demands technical skills. Here are the top three most difficult hiking trails to conquer in this park.  Telescope Peak Telescope Peak, with an elevation gain of 3,000 ft, is a round trip of around 7-8 hours. You can start trekking this route from the “Mahogany Flat Campground at the end of Upper Wildrose.”  This snow-capped mountain is a hikers’ paradise in summer. As you hike through the slopes and the forested areas and reach the peak, you will have the laurel of climbing the highest peak in the national park.  Further, the “ancient bristlecone pines,” wildflowers, and the panoramic vista of the valley from the top will take all your fatigue away.  Panamint Dunes Hiking to Panamint Dunes will be a delightful experience if you want to explore the remote parts of the park. The most immersive experience you can have here is camping in the soft sand, watching the night sky in its full glory. The hike (round-trip) will take around 5 hours, and the elevation will go up gradually. The sandy, uneven, and sometimes rocky landscape makes hiking to the top of four different dunes quite difficult.  Little Bridge Canyon With an elevation gain of 590 m, Little Bridge Canyon is a round-trip hiking route of around 5 hours. The Little Bridge Canyon has a red mouth, and as you reach there, crossing many minor washes, you will be surprised to find a rainbow of colors. Along with white stretches of Eureka Quartzite, you will also find red and bright yellow veins on the rocks. These colorful veins are formed by deposited iron oxide. Also, you will cherish the view of the sand dunes from Little Bridge Canyon.  Visit Eureka Dunes In Death Valley Eureka Dunes, the largest dune field in North America, is a must-visit place in Death Valley National Park. It rises more than 680 feet above the neighboring dry lakebed at the western base.  Things To Explore  You can camp at the Eureka Dunes Dry Camp, which is at the base of the sand dunes. This place is great for seeing the sunrise and sunset and experiencing the changing colors of the sand dunes with the rays of the sun.  A hike to Eureka Dunes is arduous due to loose sands frequently stalling your movements. However, once you reach the top, you will see the magnificent Last Chance Mountains with their limestone walls. Also, don’t forget to listen to the songs of the sand dunes. The experience is other-worldly, for sure. Further, it is hard to believe that a place like Eureka Dunes can have so much life and colors. You will love the Evening Primrose in a pristine white shade. You will also meet shining milkvetch (awaiting designation as an endangered species) and dune grass here.  Stay Safe Extreme heat is a major concern in Eureka Dunes or throughout the national park. So, choose your gear, sunscreen, hydrating solutions, and other essentials while exploring the Eureka Dunes. Hiking during summer and spring, especially in the lower elevations of the park, can be very difficult.  Even during the months of winter, the weather conditions here remain dry. Sri Lanka, with its lush green highlands, deeply ingrained history, and turquoise coastlines, has earned the place of a premier travel destination in the world. You can add to that the welcoming locals and cultural richness in the country. The cultural inclusiveness here shows in the Jaffna Tamil culture and ancient Buddhist sites such as the Sacred City of Anuradhapura and Dambulla Royal Cave Temple.  The Year in Review (2025) data of the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA) further vouches for the growth of the country in the tourism sector.  The report says that the number of tourist arrivals in Sri Lanka from January to December 2025 was 2,362,521. Also, the tourism revenue for the same period was 3.2 billion USD.  Moreover, even though the country is similar to Ireland in size, its geographical diversity is astonishing.  Hiriketiya Beach, misty mountain tea plantations such as Nuwara Eliya, UNESCO World Heritage Sites such as Galle Fort, and national parks such as the Kaudulla National Park attract every type of traveler.   However, thanks to this diversity, traveling through the tropical paradise requires a complete understanding of the following areas.  Local Logistics Cultural Expectations Seasonal Weather Patterns So, in this article, I will synthesize my firsthand travel experience into actionable Sri Lanka travel tips.  Pre-Arrival Logistics And Practical Information Understanding the climate and visa system is important if you are traveling to Sri Lanka for the first time.  Furthermore, your packing strategy has to be on point to beat the tropical heat of the island country.  Understanding Sri Lanka's Unique Dual Monsoon System Sri Lanka has a dual monsoon system. It means that two opposite sides of the island country experience rainfall at different times.  The southern and western coasts of the country, including the beautiful Ella and the cultural hub of Kandy, experience monsoon from April to August.  On the other hand, the northern and eastern coasts experience the monsoon season from October to February.  So, December to March is the ideal window to visit Sri Lanka if you want to explore different parts of the country.  Navigating Visa Requirements And Extensions You have to secure an e-Visa online before you reach Sri Lanka.  A standard tourist visa will allow 30 days with double entry, and the application should happen at least two weeks in advance.  Furthermore, if you want to spend longer in the country, you can extend your visa up to 30 days each time.  You have to visit the Department of Immigration in Colombo for the extension of the visa. Update: Sri Lanka's New Free Tourist ETA Scheme (May 2026): What Changed  Sri Lanka's visa system has changed in a way worth flagging directly.  As of May 25, 2026, the government waived the ETA processing fee entirely for nationals of 40 countries. These include the US, UK, Canada, Australia, most of the EU, India, China, and several Gulf states.   Eligible travellers still need to apply for an Electronic Travel Authorization before departure.  The fee is gone, not the application.  Also, the visa remains a 30-day, double-entry authorization, matching what this guide already describes.   Maldivian nationals get a 90-day version under a separate reciprocal arrangement.  Furthermore, the nationals of the Maldives, Seychelles, and Singapore, who did not need an ETA at all. However, they are now required to apply for one, albeit for free.   Sri Lankan diplomatic missions have since put out reminders that the ETA still needs to be secured before you fly.  The on-arrival option listed on the official portal has caused some confusion. Also, airlines have reportedly denied boarding to a handful of travellers who assumed 'free' meant 'not required.'  What This Means For Your Trip  Practically, this does not change much about how you should plan.  You still need to apply through Sri Lanka's official ETA portal before you travel.  You should still do it at least two weeks ahead, as this guide recommends. It is because processing delays have not gone away just because the fee has.   It means that the cost estimate in older trip-planning spreadsheets and blog posts is now wrong for most Western and several Asian nationalities.  Budget for a free application rather than the roughly $50 the ETA used to cost.   It is also worth double-checking your specific nationality against the current list before booking flights. The fee waiver applies to a named set of 40 countries rather than all visitors.  Also, the list has already been amended once since May to add a few more nationalities.   When in doubt, check directly with Sri Lanka's Department of Immigration and Emigration or your nearest Sri Lankan embassy ra. Packing Strategies For Intense Tropical Heat Sri Lanka experiences temperatures between 26°C and 30°C throughout the year.  So, you must pack breathable and lightweight clothing made from linen or cotton.  Furthermore, you must include high-SPF sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat, and a reusable water bottle. Having said that, the central hill country is significantly cooler, so a light jacket or fleece is necessary for evenings.
