I just planned a road trip last month. It was a pretty bold step, and my daughter kept reminding me, “Mama, you will throw up again.” She was referring to an earlier road trip last year.  It’s hard to miss the allure of a long-planned road trip, especially when it’s about celebrating the post-exam fun with my daughter. But I do have motion sickness and nausea, giddiness, and throwing up are the common problems I face.  Thankfully, with time, I have learned how to manage motion sickness and still enjoy the ride.  So, in this article, I will break down how you can take control of your symptoms and get the most out of your trip. It begins with talking to your doctor and sharing your symptoms of motion sickness. Sometimes, these medications help to alleviate your discomfort.  Common medications include: Dramamine Meclizine Scopolamine Patches. Any treatment for motion sickness blocks the neurotransmitter associated with motion sickness. How To Manage Motion Sickness When You Are On A Road Trip?  So, you are all set for the road trip. I usually start my trips in the morning, but you can start them at any time of the day.  Now, whenever I go out on a trip, I eat light. However, it does not mean that you have to start the trip with an empty stomach. Just have your usual staples and preferably something with a high carb quotient, low fat, and spices.  Then, drink enough water and take the medications. Now, I have my BP problems. So, I cannot start a day without it.  It’s time to start the car. However, there are some other important aspects of how to manage your motion sickness on a road trip.  So, here are the details.  1. Strategically Plan For Prevention Dress in lightweight clothing to offset feelings of warmth and overheating if you do experience symptoms.  Take a sweater with you if you do get cold, but stick to breathable, lightweight fabrics and footwear while you're traveling.. Sitting on the passenger side may make it more challenging to avoid seeing visual movement because of the wider windowscape you have access to from that seat. 2. Avoid Activities That May Exacerbate Symptoms Additionally, avoid activities that may aggravate your symptoms. Activities to avoid include reading, using your phone or other devices to watch videos, or scrolling. Do not engage in drinking or late-night eating the day before traveling to ensure you’ll feel healthy for your trip. Experiencing a hangover or poor digestion can easily exacerbate motion sickness symptoms. However, to keep your mind relaxed, you can always listen to your favorite road trip songs.  3. Get Good Sleep The Night Before When we don’t sleep well, it is harder for the body to regulate body temperature.  You may find yourself feeling overheated after a night of poor rest. Since feeling warm is already a symptom of motion sickness, make sure you get good rest the night before traveling to avoid worsening these symptoms.  Get to bed early and block out any lights that may interrupt your sleep cycle. Further, to calm your nerves and get a sound sleep on the day before your road trip, you can drink chamomile tea. It works for me!  4. Take Your Medications On Time Take the motion sickness medications recommended to you by your doctor to prevent the onset of symptoms as best as possible.  Follow the timing directions for your medications to get the most benefit before heading out on your road trip.  For example, prescription Scopolamine patches might be applied 30-60 minutes prior to traveling in order to work.  Talk to your doctor to determine when it's the best time to take your medications in order to manage your motion sickness. 5. Look For Balancing Visual Cues Looking at a stationary object as you travel can help your brain and inner ear find a constant understanding of motion, making you less susceptible to motion sickness symptoms.  If you do find yourself feeling woozy, rest your head on the back of the seat to promote physical stability.  You can help establish a greater balance by keeping yourself grounded in your seat. Close your eyes to reduce visual exposure to any changing movement in front of or to the side of you while in the car. 6. Take Short Breaks, Use Soothing Herbs, And Avoid Triggers I take short breaks throughout the trip to get fresh air. Furthermore, ginger and peppermints are my best friends to keep my stomach settled.  Caffeine is a big NO for me when I am traveling. Also, it’s better to avoid smoking and using devices on the go.  Moreover, I avoid wearing strong perfumes or using any strong odor in my car when I am on a road trip. This is my little secret on how to manage motion sickness on a road trip.  7. Take A Nap If You’re The Passenger. When I am not driving the car, I prefer to take a short nap. It may sound boring, but it works! If you can’t sleep, at least get some shut-eye by using an eye mask. The lush wilderness, untouched by the hyper modernization, has a bewitching charm to it. The breathtaking scenery, the heavenly water bodies, and the canopy of rainforest all paint a mesmerizing picture, and they all speak about the splendors of Costa Rica. However, despite the serenity and soulful vibe in the country, the question of “Is Costa Rica safe for traveling?” refuses to go away.   There is no denying that amidst the simplicity of life lies the risks of petty and sometimes severe crimes. In fact, the government of the USA and the Canadian Government have created detailed safety guidelines for traveling to Costa Rica.  Here, I will talk about the major safety concerns in the country and the tips to avoid them.   Is Costa Rica Safe for Traveling?  Is Costa Rica Safe for traveling? As mentioned, keep in mind the intimidating crime rate that is looming in the country. Despite the best efforts of the government and additional safety measures in tourist spots, the homicide rate in Costa Rica has seen around 40% rise in 2023.  As a Latin American country, Costa Rica is also taking proactive measures to fight drug consumption and related activities.   However, it’s great that Rodrigo Chaves, the Costa Rica President, has taken El Salvador as a reference and has introduced strict legislation to fight crime in the country.    Having said that, the tourism industry is getting a major lash due to the rise of crimes in the country. Even the smallest incidents affecting the local communities are making the travelers concerned. They are now skeptical about what to end and where to roam around. So, there are a lot of self-imposed restrictions on the things to do in Costa Rica due to rising criminal activities in the country.   So, the bottom line is that despite being a favorite destination for tourists across the globe, Costa Rica today is struggling to maintain a delightful picture in tourism.   Is Costa Rica Safe for Women?   Yes, Costa Rica is safe for women. Even during rising crimes, the country remains a safe place for women as the crimes occurring there are not gender specific.   In fact, the well-known Solo Female Travelers Club has termed Costa Rica one of the safest countries for women who want to go on a solo trip.   Further, the Costa Rican Tourism Board, along with the National Institute of Women and the National Tourism Security Commission, has started a program to establish “gender equality in the tourism industry.” This program called “RED SOFIA” wants to establish a safe space for women solo travelers in Costa Rica and end violence against women travelers.   Is It Safe to Drink Water in Costa Rica?  Now, it depends. If you are in the city, tap water is safe to drink. However, the more you move towards the Caribbean and are closer to the ocean, the better it is to stick to bottled water.   Tourism is crucial for Costa Rica's economy. So, the government is very particular about ensuring the safety of the tourists. In San Jose and other urban areas, you will get clear water from the taps, and the water is filtered multiple times before it reaches you.   However, if you have a sensitive stomach, you may have problems drinking tap water in some parts of Costa Rica. Water in some areas may be rich in chlorine and minerals. The water here does not have fluoride, and it’s hard.   If you are concerned about the quality of water, it is better to drink bottled water. You will usually get a 300 ml (about 10.14 oz) bottled water for $1 here. Further, if you need to spend a longer span in the country and drink water from the same source every day, you must check the source and buy a water filter when needed.   Some Basic Tips to Remain Safe While Traveling   Some of the major dangers you will face as a tourist in Costa Rica are common muggers, petty thefts, and car breakers. Now, a car is not something you will be traveling with. So, there is no chance of a break.   To avoid theft and muggers, carry simple weapons like pepper spray, and it is best not to travel with any valuables like jewelry or gold. Keep a vigilant look at all your electronics, as you won’t be able to travel without them. Stay safe!  Costa Rica’s dangers regarding nature are earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. But there are very few chances of you experiencing such disasters.   What Should I Avoid in Costa Rica?  Rather than asking, ‘is Costa Rica safe for traveling?’ You should better be prepared with the question asked above.   Again, no valuables.   Don’t visit the braces at night. Crime rates are high with the area and the time.   Do not buy drugs in Costa Rica. Even avoid marijuana.   Swim near the shore to avoid ripping tides.   Avoid a dip in the river to avoid deadly creatures like crocodiles and bull sharks. They are also not the cleanest place.   Don’t stay out in the sun for too long. Your tan will look more like a burn.   What Part of Costa Rica Is Safest?   If you constantly ask, ‘Is Costa Rica safe for traveling,’ you must know about the safer places in the country.   Puerto Viejo, Drake Bay, and Tamarindo are some of the best places to visit in Costa Rica for safety. The wild heart of Katmai National Park harbors 14 active volcanoes. This national park of around 5 million acres surpasses the magnificence of the Grand Canyon National Park, and kayaking, canoeing, and hiking here are one-of-a-kind experiences.  One of the oldest national parks, Katmai National Park, was established in 1918. Novarupta Volcano eruption on 6th June 1912 was destructive, and preservation of the habitation around Mount Katmai was crucial.   The National Park Service website says,  “Lasting three days, the largest volcanic eruption of the twentieth century exploded June 6, 1912, from a new volcano, Novarupta. In the process, it created Katmai caldera and the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes. Not only have the 1912 events remained scientifically important ever since, but also the 1912 deposits continue to provide insights about volcanic and magmatic processes that impact us and the land we live in.” (Source)  Today, this national park is a living account of human history, and it is the home for brown bears and salmons. It is also one of the most popular destinations for volcanologists because it’s still active. Further, it has a handsome number of visitors every year, and in 2023, the number of footfall was 33,763. Let me be your guide.  Why Are So Many Volcanoes In Katmai National Park?   With “50 discrete volcanic vents,” Katmai National Park is the center of attention of many. But why does it have so many volcanoes?  Volcanoes in the Aleutian volcanic arc and Katmai National Park are part of the Pacific Ring of Fire. “The Ring of Fire is home to 75% of the world's volcanoes and 90% of its earthquakes.” (Source)  Many call the Ring of Fire the Circum-Pacific Belt, and many tectonic plates meet here. Due to the constant movements of these plates (especially the subduction of the Oceanic Pacific Plate under the North American Plate every year), volcanic eruptions and earthquakes take place here.   Along with the eruption of  Novarupta-Katmai in 1912, there are also records of the eruption of Mount Trident from 1953 to 1974.   The latest volcanic eruption in Katmai happened with the venting of Fourpeaked Volcano in 2006. Here is an excerpt from a report published on the 2006 volcanic eruption of Fourpeaked Volcano.   “On September 17, 2006 Fourpeaked Mountain, a glacier-clad stratovolcano with no known Holocene activity, produced a plume of steam, ash, and SO2, which rose to 6000 m above sea level. The plume was observed by eye-witnesses, seen on weather radar, and also appeared in SO2-sensitive satellite imagery. Concurrent with the plume, regional seismic stations recorded a swarm of volcano-tectonic earthquakes while an atmospheric infrasound signal was recorded 800 km away. Air and ground reconnaissance revealed a linear series of vigorously steaming vents in the summit glacier, stretching about 1 km down the north flank of the volcano.”  So, are you ready to know about the active and rugged volcanoes in Katmai National Park. The next section gives you a detailed overview.   Know The Volcanoes In Katmai National Park  Volcanoes erupt for a short span if you study the entire timetable of a volcano. However, the eruption is only the outcome of activities that take place for years or even centuries. Active for over 70,000 years, the two cones of Mount Katmai were beheaded due to the caldera collapse in 1912.    The eruptive products of Mount Katmai are varied in their compositions, including basalt and rhyodacite.   Mount Griggs Mount Griggs, the tallest peak in the district, is 2,530 m tall. Despite having young lava flows, some of the deposits in Mount Griggs are 290,000 years old.   The volcano is still active and you will get to see the yellow sulfurous steam around its summit.   Trident Volcano https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5rQVsdsWsIA Trident Volcano is one of the older volcanoes in Katmai. From 1953 to 1974, Trident Volcano had many eruptions. However, the highest and the central volcanic cone of Trident Volcano has been lying dormant for around 10000 years.   Mount Mageik  Mount Mageik has four discrete eruptive centers covered with snow. However, glaciers have caused severe decay in three of these lava centers. It is a younger volcano in Katmai, with its lava aged between 4,000 and 93,000.   The last eruption of Mount Mageik happened 2500 years ago. It caused a crater between two Mount Mageik summits. Today, the crater is filled with an acid lake, exuding steam curls.   Alagogshak Volcano  Alagogshak stands at the southwesternmost corner of the Katmai volcanic cluster. It is also the oldest in the Katmai family of volcanoes. The lavas in this volcano are 40,000-680,000 years old.   Peak 6875, Snowy Mountain   Peak 6875 is a young dome made of dacite lava. The scoop-shaped peak looks like a natural amphitheater.    Spectacular Landscapes Created By Volcanic Activities In Katmai National Park   The volcanoes in Katmai have created some interesting landscapes, and their activities have encouraged geologists to explore the possibilities. Nonetheless, the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes is the most prominent volcanic landscape in Katmai.   It is the work of the largest volcanic eruption in the 20th century. The Novarupta Volcano eruption on 6th June 1912 created this valley.   There are various exciting destinations in the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes. For the geologists and people studying volcanoes, Novarupta is the ultimate destination. The dome causing the massive eruption in 1912 still carries warm steam.   It is also the most colorful place in the valley, thanks to its kaleidoscopic views caused by the deposition of ash, pumice, and other minerals.   Another popular destination in the valley is the Buttress Range Ridge. Here, you will catch a glimpse of the extensive wildlife in Katmai. Along with the bears, you will also find ptarmigan, ground squirrels, and caribou.   Other fascinating spots to explore in this valley are Katmai Pass, Southwest Trident Lava Flows, Knife Creek Glaciers, Mount Katmai Caldera, Mageik Lakes, etc.   Did You Know?  Katmai has the largest population of protected brown bears in North America.  It is home to around 2000 creatures.  Robert F. Griggs, a botanist who named Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes, played an active role in designating Katmai as a national park.  Dumpling Mountain offers the best view of Katmai National Park.  The annual Fat Bear Week in Katmai is a tournament-style competition, and online visitors can choose the winner of the tournament through voting.  Katmai National Monument was established in 1918. The redesignation of the protected and expanded area as a National Park happened in 1980.   Final Words   Active volcanoes add to the spectacle of Katmai National Park, and they attract the most adventurous souls across the globe.   The volcanoes are part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, and they have an eruptive history, with the last incident occurring in 2006.   AOV, or the Alaska Volcano Observatory, is in charge of monitoring the activities of these volcanoes. It also records the incidents of eruptions from dedicated monitoring stations.
