San Diego’s funny, and it feels like two vacations in one. You can be lazy by the beach and still find yourself hiking or grabbing tacos in some little neighborhood later.  The city’s chill, but not boring, which is kind of rare. If you’ve got a week, you can hit a mix of spots without running yourself ragged. And yeah, there’s always that random “Oh wow, I didn’t plan this, but it’s awesome” moment. So here’s a one week San Diego. It’s beaches, food, history, and a bit of hiking! All of these await you.  You don’t need to follow a very strict plan. However, having a basic plan always helps. What Is The Best One Week San Diego Itinerary?  Terminal 1 of the San Diego International Airport has just undergone a rejuvenation. The transformation has cost a whopping 3 billion US dollars, and the improvements show how the city is committed to serving its guests better. It perfectly blends smart designs, comfort, and technology.  Naturally, the current rejuvenation of Terminal 1 will be a milestone in boosting tourism to the city, which is otherwise fighting a downturn in the tourism sector in 2025. We can see the echo of the same in the words of Kerri Kapich, the COO of the San Diego Tourism Authority.  Kerri’s statement issued in May 2025 stated, “We are starting to see a slowdown. That is obviously a concern to all of us working in travel and tourism since we are the second-largest traded economy here in San Diego." Nevertheless, despite the not-so-great numbers, San Diego will never disappoint you with its beautiful beaches and marine life.  So, here is the one week San Diego itinerary for you.  Day 1: Beaches And The Waterfront The beaches and oceanfront are, of course, at the epicenter of the tourism scene of San Diego. Furthermore, these beaches are crucial for the city to adhere to sustainable and green tourism practices.  La Jolla Cove – Sea lions everywhere (they’re loud and hilarious). The water’s clear, cliffs are super photogenic, and if you’ve got snorkel gear, bring it. Sometimes they rope off parts during sea lion season, but you can still get close enough for a look.  The mornings here are calm, and it usually gets busy in the afternoon.  Mission Beach + Boardwalk – Classic scene. Long stretch of sand, bikes, rollerbladers, dudes juggling, all of it. It’s noisy in a good way. Sunset Cliffs – Come here at the end of the day. The cliffs are dramatic, like movie-scene dramatic. If the tide’s low, you can mess around in tide pools. Local tip: Parking near La Jolla can be a headache. So, reach early.  Day 2: Balboa Park And Downtown Energy Balboa Park is like San Diego showing off with its gardens, museums, and old Spanish-style buildings. Gardens – Some are free (always nice). The Botanical Building has plants everywhere, and the Alcazar Garden feels like a tiled postcard. Museums – Pick your flavor. Art, science, natural history! There are literally 17 of them. You won’t see it all, and that’s fine. Gaslamp Quarter – At night, the downtown buzz kicks in. Rooftop bars, restaurants, live music.  Local tip: Many museums offer free entry on Tuesdays. So, explore the official museum websites.  Day 3: Old Town And Classic Mexican Flavors If you want history with tacos (and who doesn’t), Old Town’s the move. Historic Park – Adobe houses, blacksmith demos, street performers! It’s half museum, half fair. Café Coyote – Fresh tortillas, large plates, and a fun vibe make Café Coyote a must-visit. Shops – Skip fridge magnets and choose handmade pottery, woven stuff, and jewelry, instead. Local tip: Late afternoon is the mariachi time, and it is super festive.  Day 4: Hiking And Outdoor Escapes Beaches are cool, but don’t skip the trails. San Diego has legit nature spots. Torrey Pines – Wild trees, epic ocean views, trails that make you stop mid-step just to gawk. Check closures before you go. Cowles Mountain – Moderate climb, great views from the top. You’ll feel like you earned your tacos. Mission Trails Park – Huge, less touristy. Lots of trails, chill atmosphere. Old Mission Dam is a simple stroll. Local tip: Sunrise hikes. Cooler, quieter, better. Day 5: San Diego Bay And A Boat Tour Different vibe today—see the city from the water. USS Midway – Enormous. Even just standing outside, you’ll be like, wow. Seaport Village – Cute, a little touristy, but good for wandering and snacks. San Diego Boat Tour – A harbor cruise is an affordable way to see the city from the water. You will pass under the Coronado Bridge, glide by the naval base, and take in the skyline from a fresh angle.  Some tours even spot dolphins along the way. If you want a more relaxing San Diego Bay tour with a fun island vibe, Tiki Time Bay Tours is one of the best choices. Their tiki-style boats create a laid-back atmosphere that is perfect for unwinding on the water. Local tip: Evening cruises can be cheaper. Plus, lights on the water are underrated. Day 6: Neighborhoods And Local Life This day’s all about vibes. Little Italy – You will find food everywhere, including good coffee, murals, and a farmers' market if you’re lucky. North Park – The North Park is artsy with craft beer and the vintage shops being the main attractions. Explore North Park in the afternoon. Ocean Beach – It is very chill and exudes a hippie-surfer energy. End with tacos by the pier. Day 7: Scenic Drives And A Relaxed Farewell Enjoy the last day of your trip in San Diego. You don’t need to do too much planning.  Pacific Coast Highway – Drive north, stop whenever the view makes you. (It’ll be often.) Coronado Island – Wide beach, fancy hotel, little cafes! It’s postcard-perfect but relaxed. Sunset Picnic – Grab snacks and sit on a blanket at Sunset Cliffs or Coronado. End the trip slowly and soak in the moments. Local tip: Locals picnic at the beach all the time. Join in. Wrapping Up Your San Diego Week Seven days later, you get why people rave about this place. You’ve seen beaches, trails, food spots, historic stuff, and neighborhoods, all with that laid-back SoCal vibe.  And the thing is that you didn’t even cover it all. The wild heart of Katmai National Park harbors 14 active volcanoes. This national park of around 5 million acres surpasses the magnificence of the Grand Canyon National Park, and kayaking, canoeing, and hiking here are one-of-a-kind experiences.  One of the oldest national parks, Katmai National Park, was established in 1918. Novarupta Volcano eruption on 6th June 1912 was destructive, and preservation of the habitation around Mount Katmai was crucial.   The National Park Service website says,  “Lasting three days, the largest volcanic eruption of the twentieth century exploded June 6, 1912, from a new volcano, Novarupta. In the process, it created Katmai caldera and the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes. Not only have the 1912 events remained scientifically important ever since, but also the 1912 deposits continue to provide insights about volcanic and magmatic processes that impact us and the land we live in.” (Source)  Today, this national park is a living account of human history, and it is the home for brown bears and salmons. It is also one of the most popular destinations for volcanologists because it’s still active. Further, it has a handsome number of visitors every year, and in 2023, the number of footfall was 33,763. Let me be your guide.  Why Are So Many Volcanoes In Katmai National Park?   With “50 discrete volcanic vents,” Katmai National Park is the center of attention of many. But why does it have so many volcanoes?  Volcanoes in the Aleutian volcanic arc and Katmai National Park are part of the Pacific Ring of Fire. “The Ring of Fire is home to 75% of the world's volcanoes and 90% of its earthquakes.” (Source)  Many call the Ring of Fire the Circum-Pacific Belt, and many tectonic plates meet here. Due to the constant movements of these plates (especially the subduction of the Oceanic Pacific Plate under the North American Plate every year), volcanic eruptions and earthquakes take place here.   Along with the eruption of  Novarupta-Katmai in 1912, there are also records of the eruption of Mount Trident from 1953 to 1974.   The latest volcanic eruption in Katmai happened with the venting of Fourpeaked Volcano in 2006. Here is an excerpt from a report published on the 2006 volcanic eruption of Fourpeaked Volcano.   “On September 17, 2006 Fourpeaked Mountain, a glacier-clad stratovolcano with no known Holocene activity, produced a plume of steam, ash, and SO2, which rose to 6000 m above sea level. The plume was observed by eye-witnesses, seen on weather radar, and also appeared in SO2-sensitive satellite imagery. Concurrent with the plume, regional seismic stations recorded a swarm of volcano-tectonic earthquakes while an atmospheric infrasound signal was recorded 800 km away. Air and ground reconnaissance revealed a linear series of vigorously steaming vents in the summit glacier, stretching about 1 km down the north flank of the volcano.”  So, are you ready to know about the active and rugged volcanoes in Katmai National Park. The next section gives you a detailed overview.   Know The Volcanoes In Katmai National Park  Volcanoes erupt for a short span if you study the entire timetable of a volcano. However, the eruption is only the outcome of activities that take place for years or even centuries. Active for over 70,000 years, the two cones of Mount Katmai were beheaded due to the caldera collapse in 1912.    The eruptive products of Mount Katmai are varied in their compositions, including basalt and rhyodacite.   Mount Griggs Mount Griggs, the tallest peak in the district, is 2,530 m tall. Despite having young lava flows, some of the deposits in Mount Griggs are 290,000 years old.   The volcano is still active and you will get to see the yellow sulfurous steam around its summit.   Trident Volcano https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5rQVsdsWsIA Trident Volcano is one of the older volcanoes in Katmai. From 1953 to 1974, Trident Volcano had many eruptions. However, the highest and the central volcanic cone of Trident Volcano has been lying dormant for around 10000 years.   Mount Mageik  Mount Mageik has four discrete eruptive centers covered with snow. However, glaciers have caused severe decay in three of these lava centers. It is a younger volcano in Katmai, with its lava aged between 4,000 and 93,000.   The last eruption of Mount Mageik happened 2500 years ago. It caused a crater between two Mount Mageik summits. Today, the crater is filled with an acid lake, exuding steam curls.   Alagogshak Volcano  Alagogshak stands at the southwesternmost corner of the Katmai volcanic cluster. It is also the oldest in the Katmai family of volcanoes. The lavas in this volcano are 40,000-680,000 years old.   Peak 6875, Snowy Mountain   Peak 6875 is a young dome made of dacite lava. The scoop-shaped peak looks like a natural amphitheater.    Spectacular Landscapes Created By Volcanic Activities In Katmai National Park   The volcanoes in Katmai have created some interesting landscapes, and their activities have encouraged geologists to explore the possibilities. Nonetheless, the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes is the most prominent volcanic landscape in Katmai.   It is the work of the largest volcanic eruption in the 20th century. The Novarupta Volcano eruption on 6th June 1912 created this valley.   There are various exciting destinations in the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes. For the geologists and people studying volcanoes, Novarupta is the ultimate destination. The dome causing the massive eruption in 1912 still carries warm steam.   It is also the most colorful place in the valley, thanks to its kaleidoscopic views caused by the deposition of ash, pumice, and other minerals.   Another popular destination in the valley is the Buttress Range Ridge. Here, you will catch a glimpse of the extensive wildlife in Katmai. Along with the bears, you will also find ptarmigan, ground squirrels, and caribou.   Other fascinating spots to explore in this valley are Katmai Pass, Southwest Trident Lava Flows, Knife Creek Glaciers, Mount Katmai Caldera, Mageik Lakes, etc.   Did You Know?  Katmai has the largest population of protected brown bears in North America.  It is home to around 2000 creatures.  Robert F. Griggs, a botanist who named Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes, played an active role in designating Katmai as a national park.  Dumpling Mountain offers the best view of Katmai National Park.  The annual Fat Bear Week in Katmai is a tournament-style competition, and online visitors can choose the winner of the tournament through voting.  Katmai National Monument was established in 1918. The redesignation of the protected and expanded area as a National Park happened in 1980.   Final Words   Active volcanoes add to the spectacle of Katmai National Park, and they attract the most adventurous souls across the globe.   The volcanoes are part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, and they have an eruptive history, with the last incident occurring in 2006.   AOV, or the Alaska Volcano Observatory, is in charge of monitoring the activities of these volcanoes. It also records the incidents of eruptions from dedicated monitoring stations. Local and foreign tourists gather here to explore the 198 acres of area with rare plants and winter flowers of more than 1000 species.  The gardens here have plants from various countries such as Japan, India, Bhutan, and China. Furthermore, the Ho Kham Luang Royal Pavilion, or a Lanna-style structure, is the main attraction of this botanical park, and it stands for the rich heritage of Thai architecture and the morale of King Rama IX.  Moreover, this botanical park is a Net-Zero Carbon Park, and it aims to reduce carbon emissions and promote low-carbon tourism.  Queen Sirikit Botanic Garden The Mae Rim district of Chiang Mai is home to the Queen Sirikit Botanic Garden. Spanning over an area of 2,574 acres, it has more than 10 glasshouse zones.  Furthermore, it has a canopy walkway with an elevation of 400 meters. From there, you can enjoy a 360-degree view of the natural forests and trails around.  4. Ayutthaya: A UNESCO World Heritage Site An hour or so from Bangkok and you’re basically stepping into another century. Ayutthaya used to be Siam’s capital, and now its ruins and temples are everywhere. The kind of ruins that make you stop and go, “Wow, people actually built this hundreds of years ago.” Easiest way to see it? Rent a bike. Just ride around the historical park, stop whenever something catches your eye.  Don’t miss Wat Mahathat. It has the Buddha head wrapped in tree roots, which is the photo everybody takes, but it really is cool in person.  Wat Phra Si Sanphet shows off how grand the city must’ve been back in the day. 5. Krabi Province: Home To Over 100 Islands And The Thai Adventure Hub Cliffs, turquoise water, beaches! Everything is so perfect in Karabi.  Railay Beach is the spot most people talk about. You can only get there by boat, and it’s a mix of rock climbers scaling cliffs and people just lying in the sand doing nothing. Island-hopping is easy here. The Hong Islands are perfect if you want snorkeling or kayaking in quiet lagoons. Ao Nang’s where most travelers stay. It has enough hotels, restaurants, and bars to keep you busy without being overwhelming. Phuket Vs Krabi Beaches: Which One Is Better To Visit?  It’s a tough task! Can you pick a favorite? All the beaches of Phuket and Krabi are beautiful. However, Phuket is more accessible than Krabi. So, for a family holiday, these beaches will be ideal.  On the other hand, if you are traveling with friends or with your partner and you want a more adventurous experience, Krabi beaches are the places to visit.  Similarly, the beaches of Phuket are more crowded than those of Krabi. So, for better privacy and exclusive experiences, Krabi is a better destination.  Moreover, if you want to experience the nightlife of Thailand, Phuket Beaches, especially Patong Beach, are the ultimate destination.
