Trincomalee has one of the closest gateways to Harbarana, the gateway to the Ritigara Forest Monastery.  However, as a tourist from India, Trincomalee is more than a tourist attraction for me. As Jaffna, Sri Lanka, connects the country with India, my homeland, with its Tamil culture and Top Hindu Temples, Trincomalee is important for political, economic, and security reasons.  That is why India has taken a keen interest in the development of the “socio-economic infrastructure and energy hub” in the region.  Also, Trincomalee, with adventure opportunities such as whale watching, surfing, and historical exploration, plays an important role in the tourism development in Sri Lanka.  However, it is unfortunate that most tourists think of only Uppuveli Beach when there is any discussion regarding Trincomalee.  This time, I will talk about the things to do in Trincomalee beyond the Uppuveli Beach.  What Are The Best Things To Do In Trincomalee? I know it’s difficult to avoid the allure of the Uppuveli Beach, which has a laid-back vibe. Also, its emerald waters attract the divers and snorkelers.  Still, there is so much to see beyond the Uppuveli Beach. I loved the beautiful beaches in Jaffna for their quiet and pristine vibes.  However, I found the Uppuveli Beach very touristy, and that was a big turn-off for someone like me, who believes in the principles of the LowDownUnder Travel.  So, here are the other and more exciting (for me) things to do in Trincomalee. 1. Visiting The Nilaveli Beach I took a tuk-tuk from the Uppuveli Beach and reached the Nilaveli Beach within 20 minutes. It was summertime. So, even if the Sun was very strong, the crowd was very small. Just the way I like it! The restaurants, shops, and resorts were not up from their siesta yet, and it was the surfing locals who kept the beach alive.  I started walking south back along the white beach toward Uppuveli, and fortunately, found a place that looked deserted. It was just the turquoise waters, white sand, and me.  However, the current was pretty strong, and I could not spot any lifeguards. So, I bunked the idea of swimming and again walked back toward the north. I had chilled beer with some snacks and watched the surfers in action.  The guy serving food asked me to come back in the peak season when the beach becomes a bustling coastal hub. I told him, “I like it this way!”  2. Visiting The Thirukoneswaram Kovil Temple  Entry: Free Hours: 6 AM to 1 PM and 4 PM to 6:45 PM Photography: Not Allowed Dress Code: Modest Clothing with Knees and Shoulders Covered  I again took a tuk-tuk from the Nilaveli Beach and started for the Sri Thirukoneswaram Kovil Temple. The temple is on the Trincomalee cliffs, and on my way, I found Fort Frederick, once a Dutch stronghold in the country.  Also, as I started walking upward, there were many sellers, market stalls, and fruit vendors lined on both sides of the road. So, the temple is not just a religious place. It is at the epicenter of the local economic and cultural activities.  Nevertheless, once I reached the temple entrance, the majestic statue of Lord Shiva evoked awe. The main temple in pastel shades is erected behind the statue.  The main temple and many of the statues were destroyed by the Portuguese, and they built Fort Frederick with the temple ruins. However, the locals saved many of the statues by burying them underground, and now they are restored again.  The interior of the current temple is as beautiful as its exterior. You will find intricate wooden work and Hindu deities everywhere you look. Also, as you take a walk around the temple, you eventually walk down the cliffs, enjoying the beautiful views of the bay.  3. Lover’s Leap  Lover’s Leap is an area in the Trincomalee cliffs themselves. Francina van Reed, the daughter of a Dutchman, sacrificed her life by jumping from the cliffs.  She saw the ship of her lover sinking in the waters of the Indian Ocean. Out of grief, she took her life.  4. Fort Frederick Fort Frederick was once a Portuguese stronghold, and now the Sri Lankan army uses it. So, you can only see the fort from the road.  Also, there are many old colonial buildings in the same area.  Furthermore, the Fort is occupied by the local deer. Spotting them here was unexpected and obviously a high point.  However, there are warning signs, and you must obey them. So, do not try to feed them, however tempting it may seem.  5. Visiting The Trincomalee Maritime And Naval History Museum Hours Open: 9 AM to 4 PM (Wednesday to Monday) Entry: Free I took a short walk from the fort and reached the Trincomalee Maritime and Naval History Museum. The barrel of a giant cannon welcomed me there.  I opted for a guided tour as I wanted to know the stories behind the exhibits. The museum has recreated a shipwreck, and among other exhibits, there are 3D models explaining the history and landscape of Trincomalee.  There are also archaeological exhibits and the display of naval uniforms.  However, the high point in the museum was yet to come for me. I learned that it was once the residence of a Dutch Commissioner. However, the building fell with the roots of a giant tree bursting through the property.  Still, it was restored to its glory after a reconstruction work of five years.  I was slowly soaking in the story of human resilience as my guide took me to the roof of the museum. I climbed up through a set of tiny stairs in the backroom.  The view was beautiful, and I could see the bay, Fort Frederick, and everything in the surrounding areas.  6. Exploring The Trincomalee Market Exploring the local market was at the core of my Jaffna food tour. Similarly, to know about the local culture, I decided to visit the Trincomalee Market.  Trust me, it is one of the best things to do in Trincomalee if you are planning to try activities that are not very touristy.  I spotted some beautiful street art while exploring the market. Furthermore, the textile shops were selling vibrant clothes, vegetables and fresh fruit. Also, the fish market has a separate section.  So, if you are a vegetarian or vegan, you can explore the market without hesitation.  The market is also easily accessible from various parts of Trincomalee, as the setup is around the Central Bus Station and the Clock Tower.  Lunch And Food At The Trincomalee Market For me, a trip remains incomplete until I try the local food. Food here is very much like Jaffna, only a little less spicy.  The hotels (restaurants) here serve warm vadas, rice and curry, samosas, and seafood. Lunch for a person at these hotels will cost you around INR 120.  Then, we walked opposite the bus station and found many fruit and vegetable stalls. We bought some bananas, dragon fruits, and the jackfruits there were the biggest I have seen. The Fish Market I was a little late, and most of the fish was sold by then. Still, the crowd of vendors and sellers was pretty decent there.  I bought some fresh crabs and prawns and requested the cook at the hostel to prepare our evening snacks and dinner with them. I made quite a few friends at the hostel. So, sharing the meal with them was a lot of fun.  7. Whale Watching  Whale watching is one of the most exciting things to do in Trincomalee if you are here between November and mid-April.  It is located at a distance of 2 hours, and Nilaveli and Uppuveli beaches are the best places to spot whales in Trincomalee.  In the peak season, you can spot at least ten species of whales here. Split is a port city on the beautiful Adriatic Sea. It has delightful beaches in Croatia and a vibrant nightlife. However, it is the ancient heart of the city that attracts me the most.  It’s great that I reached Split in November and spent weeks getting to know the Dalmatian region and the city’s history.  The Mediterranean climate of Split is blissful, and that’s what makes it a year-round attraction. However, it is one of the best family vacation spots if you are planning something for the summer.  Also, if you are a history buff like me, you can plan an off-season trip and avoid the crowd.  As I chose November for my Split Croatia trip, I got the chance to soak up the never-ending stories.  Did you know that Split was the place where Emperor Diocletian retired from his throne? He was the only Roman emperor who voluntarily retired from his throne. Also, Split was the place where Julius Nepos, another Roman Emperor, was killed by his soldiers in 480 AD. Thus, Split saw the final nail in the coffin of the Western Roman Empire.  Nikola Tesla, the legendary inventor, studied in Split.  Split has been used as the backdrop of many Hollywood movies and TV series, including the magnanimous Game of Thrones. Split is the actual place where Daenerys kept her three dragons.  So, overall, Split has history, intrigue, natural abundance, and a happening nightlife. Exploring The Dalmatian Coast And Even Beyond  Dubrovnik, Split, Sibenik, and Zadar. These are the four major cities that make the Dalmatian Coast what it is.  There are many smaller towns in between. However, these are the most populous and accessible. Split, again, has the highest population among them. Also, I used Split as the base for my journey on the Dalmatian Coast. The city airport has modern amenities, and it gets many connecting flights to other Dalmatian cities. So, this is the best way to enjoy a day, cherishing the Adriatic region. However, you can also choose Zagreb, the inland capital of Croatia, as your base, and then take a bus to Split and the Dalmatian coast.  2. Visiting Diocletian’s Palace  Diocletian, an enlightened Roman emperor, ruled from 284 to 305 AD. The seat of his voluntary retirement or abdication was his palace in Split.  Diocletian’s Palace is an intriguing combination of a military fortress, an imperial accommodation, a fortified town, and gardens.  You can still listen to the cry of the while marble palace for the retired emperor.  A DIY tour of the palace is free. However, you can also be a part of a small group tour and have an in-depth idea about the past of the palace and Split.  Also, if you want, you can plan a stay at the Diocletian’s Palace. However, there is always a large queue of tourists who want to stay here. So, book in advance.  Moreover, here are the most noteworthy spots I visited in the Diocletian’s Palace Complex.  • The Cybele Temple Or The Cathedral Treasury Split I came across the Cybele Temple or the Cathedral Treasury as I just entered the complex. This complex also functions as a museum.  Inside the museum, I saw some really intriguing Catholic relics and artifacts from the Roman era. So, the museum at the entrance sets the perfect mood for the things you can expect throughout the tour of the palace.  It is also the time when you will choose the tours you want to take. The amount you pay will depend on the number of tours you take.  • Saint Dominus Bell Tower Now, this part is a little difficult as I had to climb almost 200 steep steps to reach the top of the bell tower. The narrow passageways once again reminded me why I needed to take my fitness sessions more seriously.  Finally, after climbing upward through a tight space, the tower culminates in an “open-air metal staircase.”  The view from here is amazing.  • Saint Dominus Cathedral The Saint Dominus Cathedral is just below the cathedral. It is the second-oldest among the Catholic cathedrals that are still being used.  Furthermore, the Catholic iconography and the soaring dome inside really humbled me. The building may not be massive, but it has an impressive architecture.  • The Temple Of Jupiter I love Greco-Roman architecture and always look for historical things to do whenever I visit a new destination. So, I had to stop by the Temple of Jupiter.  Dedicated to the Greek God, Jupiter, the temple also tells the tales of human resilience. It was destroyed three times and then reconstructed.  The final version was built during 81-96, in the time of Emperor Domitian.  Furthermore, the granite sphinx outside the temple is headless and this is a 3000-year-old statue, which was beheaded in the 4th century by the enraged local Christians. After the temple visit, I took the Pusti Me Da Prodjem or the Let Me Pass alley. 3. Exploring The Old Town  The Diocletian’s Palace is in a fortified town. The alleys here still exude the old-world charm.  The only modern elements are the internet cafes, stray cats, and ice cream shops here. I especially loved walking the alleyways at night with the moonlight bathing the streets.  The activity was simple, but the sense of adventure and romance I had was matchless. It was the perfect TheLowDownUnder Travel vibe.  4. Walking The Riva The harbor and the Riva are just outside the Old Town and temple walls. This section is very wakable, and it is the place to explore the shops, local restaurants, and cafes.  You can call it the living room of the city, and it is the most prominent place in Split. Moreover, you can have all types of seafood and cuisine at the restaurants here.  I loved the English-only menus and authentic Croatian cuisine here. You can also try the seafood, fresh burgers, and pizzas.  Moreover, I loved watching people here and how they got involved in animated conversations after a dose of cigarettes, booze, or just good food.  Overall, with music playing in the background, Riva is all about camaraderie, great energy, and sharing vibes.  5. Eating, Drinking, And Partying In Split  Do you love authentic Croatian food? Try the top-rated restaurants in Split, such as Duje, DeListes or Konoba Matejusta.  Furthermore, I loved the cuttlefish risotto at DeListes and black truffle carbonara. The best thing about these restaurants is that the menus change regularly because the dishes are made using fresh and locally-sourced ingredients only.  Also, they always do not accept reservations, and you may have to pay only in cash.  Moreover, I came across many excellent bars in the Old Town. O’Hara’s Irish Pub was a discovery there, and a local lady advised me to pay a visit to Trogir.  Also, Marvlvs Libray Jazz Bar, Charlie’s Bar, and Crew Bar are some of the places to enjoy the party vibe of Croatia.  6. Visiting A Museum With such a rich culture, Split has no dearth of options when it comes to museums. I visited the following museums here.  • Mestrovic Gallery This museum celebrates Mestrovic, the famous Croatian artist and sculptor. It is a place to learn about his life and work.  • Split Ethnographic Museum It is a wonderful display of the Croatian home objects and clothing.  • Game Of Thrones Museum  This museum has the most authentic costumes and props used in the iconic TV series. Also, some parts of the TV series were shot here. 7. Getting Aerobic At Marjan Park The Marjan Park, with its network of forested trails, extends into the ocean. It was an experience to climb the Telegrin Peak, the highest point of the park.  From the peak, I loved the views in the surroundings. If you don’t want to walk, you can also take a bike to reach the peak.  In fact, you walk for four hours and still do not see every corner of the park. So, getting the rental immediately after reaching the park is the best thing you can do.  Moreover, I don’t want you to repeat the mistake I made. So, you must bring your swimsuit here as you will find the Kasjuni Beach, Plaza Jezinak, and Kupaliste Bene here. 8. A Day Trip In The Dalmatia Historic Region Split is more alluring for the quintessential Croatian experience because of its accessibility and central location.  Furthermore, you can start exploring the historic region of Dalmatia from Split. So, take a short bus ride and explore the following regions.  • Trogir I took the Flix bus and reached Trogir to soak in its medieval vibe. Time stands still here, and it feels like a journey to the fairyland.  • Kills Fortress Visiting the Kills Fortress feels nothing short of an investigation project. In Game of Thrones, it was the Meeren.  The views from the fortress are breathtaking.  • Solin And Salona  You can experience Solin, which is a modern city, and it surrounds Salona. Salona is the place where Emperor Diocletian was born.  Furthermore, it is an ancient Roman City, probably even older than Pompeii. It has a large cemetery, a large bathhouse, and a massive amphitheater.  Other places you can visit during the day trip are the Plitvice Lakes National Park, Krka National Park, or the Blue Cave. Even Mostar in Bosnia and Herzegovina can be a part of your Split Croatia itinerary.  9. Hopping A Ferry Croatia has more than a thousand islands. Some of them are unpopulated. However, you can explore the other islands by ferry.  I used the ferryhopper.com app to plan my ferry route and schedule the ride. I took a ticket for a visit to Hvar.  You can even take a ferry ride to Mediterranean islands such as Korkula and Vis.  However, when planning a ferry ride, you have to check the weather conditions first. Adriatic is unpredictable.  10. Making Good Memories In Split Croatia Split Croatia harbors most of the historical wonders and flows here. So, I listened to endless stories and learned many lessons here.  Furthermore, the Mediterranean climate here is very seductive, and in every nook of Split, there is a sense of discovery.  People are warm, the beaches are gorgeous, and the food is great.  So, plan a visit to this city of Roman history and culture soon!

Suva has the nickname of “The Green Heart of the Pacific,” and there is a reason behind that. It is more than government buildings and rich cultures. It is a rainforest city. Also, the city has Naitasiri and Rew adventure zones in the surrounding. Moreover, with an annual rainfall of 3000 millimeters, it has natural wonders such as the Colo-i-Suva Forest Park and urban places such as the Thurston Gardens and Albert Park. Hike these peaks and explore these reserves.  • Mount Korobaba Summit Hike It is the best Suva hike experience you can have. Mount Korobaba rises above the Lami harbor, and from the mountain, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the Suva peninsula and Laucala Bay.  This trekking trail starts behind the Lami Cement Factory. So, the start is humble, but it is worth the grand view.  However, the hike is strenuous, and a return trip will take at least 2 to 3 hours. Also, here, you have to be very careful about the mud warning.  If it rains, the trail will become muddy and act like a vertical natural slide. Nevertheless, there are ropes in some sections to help you haul yourself up.  • Savura Forest Reserve Savura Forest Reserve is like a hidden gem, and it is a quiet academic zone that you would love to explore. It is a vital area for the water supply of Suva.  Furthermore, because it has fewer tourists, the biodiversity of the place remains almost intact. Overall, the condition is meditative and peaceful.  4. Coastal And Island Nature To cherish the coastal beauty and Island nature of Suva, you must visit the Nukulau Island and My Suva Park & The Seawall. At these places, you will understand the relationship of Suva with its marine landscape. So, leave the mainland and walk the southern edge.  • Nukulau Island The Nukalau Island is small, but it has a long history. It has served as a quarantine station and a prison. However, ironically, today, it is not a dark tourism site anymore.  In fact, it is now a peaceful place for a picnic.  Sandbank, And The History Of Nukulau Island  When there is a low tide, you will notice a massive stretch of sandbank here. The ticket price will be just $2.  3. Suva Keeps It Quiet On Sundays  Sundays are great for exploring the natural spots of Suva. These places are less crowded on Sundays.  Quite a surprise compared to the Western standards.  However, there is a catch! Public transport options are very limited on Sundays. So, you must pre-book a taxi for a smooth experience.  4. Follow The Sulu Rule  Suva is very particular about its customs and traditions.  Suppose you are visiting a secluded nature spot and you have to walk through a village, such as Korolailai, to reach that place.  Then, you will have to cover your legs with a sarong as a gesture of respect for the local community.  5. Be Aware Of Leptospirosis The pools and natural swimming places in Suva have tropical water. So, you cannot swim in them if you have open cuts.  Tropical water carries bacteria, and if you swim in the water with open injuries, you may have Leptospirosis.  6. Use Your Skills To Negotiate  You cannot just agree to whatever the boat owner asks you to pay for a ride to Nukulau. You must negotiate the boat fee at the Suva Carrier Stand, which is near the Suva Market.  If you are taking a private fiberglass boat, a return trip will cost you around $80-$100 FJD.  7. Wear Mosquito Repellent  My Suva Park in Suva, or the mangrove areas and rainforest, has mosquitoes. Also, Dengue is a serious concern here.  So, you have to wear mosquito repellent, and you need to spray to get rid of the mosquitoes.  8. Stay Hydrated  The humidity percentage in Suva Rainforest is more than 90%. It is at the base of the Mt Korobaba. Can I Camp On Nukulau Island? Yes, you can camp on Nukulau Island, but you need a permit from the Department of Environment in Suva City beforehand. The charm of Edinburgh grows on you. I know that I am not the only one who felt like moving to the Scottish Capital after the first visit.   So, even though Edinburgh happened to me many moons ago, I can vividly remember its moody weather and the beautiful architecture. More than anything, the cityscape stays with me.   Also, if you are a “bucket-list” kind of traveler, the city harbors endless attractions. And this guide here is about the things to do in Edinburgh.   What Are The Things To Do In Edinburgh?   From visiting the beautiful Dean Village to exploring the majestic Edinburgh Castle, you cannot match the experience of the Scottish capital with anywhere else.   These are my favorite things to do in Edinburgh.  1. Visiting The Dean Village   Dean Village reminded me of the village of Belle from Beauty and the Beast. I took a short walk from Stockbridge to reach Dean Village.   Furthermore, I just grabbed my coffee and roamed aimlessly. This is how you discover the best wonders and keep your plan spontaneous.   2. Strolling Down The Circus Lane   I discovered the Circus Lane while strolling along the Dean Village and beyond. The Circus Lane is just five minutes away from Dean Village.   Every minute in the street is Instagrammable.  3. Living The Dark Academia Moment At New College  The dark academia fan in me was very happy visiting the New College. I stepped into the courtyard and saw a ballroom scene becoming alive before my eyes.   4. Exploring The Edinburgh Castle  On top of Castle Rock, the castle is the crown jewel in the history of Edinburgh. Also, from the castle, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the surroundings.  5. Wandering Along The Royal Mile   The Royal Mile is also one of the historical palaces to see in Edinburgh. It is a thoroughfare, and it is a link between the Palace of Holyroodhouse and Edinburgh Castle.   You will find many eateries, shops, and landmarks here.   6. Hiking To The Top Of Arthur’s Seat  This is a hike to reach the top of an ancient volcano. The hike is rewarding, and after reaching the top, I loved the vistas of the entire city.   It’s a must if you are in Edinburgh.  7. Enjoying The View Of The Edinburgh Castle From Vennel Viewpoint  You can enjoy a different perspective of the Edinburgh Castle from the Vennel Viewpoint. The surroundings are beautiful in all seasons.   However, it is something different in autumn.   8. Exploring The Harry Potter Shops On Victoria Street   Now, everyone knows that Victoria Street is the inspiration behind the famous Diagon Alley in Harry Potter.   No wonder that the street today has many Harry Potter-themed shops. So, it was a mix of walking down the historical moments and a Potterhead moment.   9. Living The Willy Wonka Moment At The Chocolatarium  The Chocolatarium, close to the Royal Mile, offers a 90-minute guided tour called The Tour of Chocolate.   You will get to taste more than 40 flavors of chocolates here, and you can make your own chocolate bar and take it home.   Furthermore, during the weekends, The Chocolatarium also offers Chocolate and Wine and Chocolate and Whiskey pairings.   10. Enjoying Views From The Top Of Camera Obscura  Camera Obscura has various exhibits and displays. However, to find Camera Obscura, you will have to reach the top of the building.   This old telescope from 1835 is the oldest CCTV in the city. Through this, you can enjoy a view of the city down to the waterfront as it was back then.  11. Visiting The Grave Of Tom Riddle At Greyfriars Kirkyard  Near the Royal Mile, Greyfriars Kirkyard is an iconic place to visit in Edinburgh. Here, you will find the graveyard of McGonagall and Tom Riddle.   12. Taking A Stroll Up To Calton Hill  Calton Hill is home to various iconic moments of Edinburgh. Furthermore, I loved it more for its sunrise and sunset views.   13. Visiting The Museums Of Edinburgh   Edinburgh has some of the most prominent and comprehensive museums in the United Kingdom.   These are the museums you can explore in Edinburgh.   National Museum Of Scotland   You will get to know about Scottish history, technology, science, world cultures, and the natural world at the National Museum of Scotland.   The important exhibits here are Dolly the Sheep, which was the first cloned mammal, the Lewis Chessmen, and the dramatic architecture of the Grand Gallery.   You need at least 3 hours to explore this museum.   The Museum Of Edinburgh  It is home to the National Covenant, one of the most important documents in the history of Scotland.   Furthermore, you will find many historic artifacts related to the city in the museum.   Writers’ Museum  This is again a dream spot for dark academia fans. The unique setup and museum celebrate the likes of Robert Louis Stevenson, Sir Walter Scott, and Robert Burns.   Along with rare books, you will also find personal objects used by the prominent literary figures and paintings.   Moreover, the museum offers free entry.   Scottish National Portrait Gallery  Visiting the iconic Scottish National Portrait Gallery is one of the best free things to do in Edinburgh.   Here, you will enjoy a journey through the history of Edinburgh with the photographs, sculptures, paintings, and movies.  Surgeons’ Hall Museums  It is one of the most prominent and fast surgical museums in the world. Here, you will get to know about the evolution of surgery and medicine.   You will also come across the surgical instruments from the 19th century and many preserved specimens. 14. Buying Secondhand Books At Armchair Books  It is a paradise for book lovers. You will get books from the 1800s and different centuries at this shop.   So, you don’t just buy books from here; you carry a little moment of history home.   15. Despite being a celebrated place, the food here is quite reasonable. It’s around £30 for two people.   We chose The Pantry as your brunch stop. It is close to the Circus Lane and Dean Village. I loved the coffee there.   Moreover, at the end of Princes Street, Taco Libre is a casual place to appease your sudden hunger pangs. The tacos are great, but try the Margaritas once!   Where To Stay In Edinburgh?   The House of Gods and the Royal Mile at The Witchery are some of the most interesting places to stay in Edinburgh.   The House of Gods offers a wild experience. On the other hand, the Royal Mile at The Witchery has the quintessential Gothic romance vibe. Istanbul is massive, and for a first-timer, overwhelming. Also, it’s a city that spans across Europe and Asia.  The European areas have their own vibe. and the Asian counterparts nurture distinct cultures.  Also, there is a more subtle divide between the historical landmarks and a more local experience. Each side has its pros and cons.  So, a struggle to find the perfect accommodation can be a challenge.  Hi, in today’s blog, I will talk about where to stay in Istanbul. I have enlisted the budget-friendly, mid-range, and luxury hotel options in this largest city in Turkey. Also, if you want to explore nature-based tourism in Turkey, you can read my guide on Pamukkale, a place rich in historical heritage and natural beauty. Map Of Istanbul As a first-timer, the Sultanahmet Area will be the best place to stay in Istanbul for you. However,  I want you to be familiar with the map of Istanbul so that you can explore more localities.  In other words, if you are visiting Istanbul for the first time, you must explore the following localities.  1. Sultanahmet Sultanahmet is on the European side of Istanbul. As the heart of the Old City, it offers access to all the important historical landmarks.  However, Sultanahmet is touristy and expensive. So, as a first-timer, it may be difficult for you to connect to the city’s true vibe.  Still, it is at a walkable distance of major attractions such as the Süleymaniye Mosque, Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia, Grand Bazaar, Basilica Cistern, and Spice Bazaar.  2. Galata Galata is close to the Galata Bridge and the Golden Horn. It is a trendy neighborhood. So, you will find many cozy cafes here.  However, the hotel options here are a little less because it is a hilly region.  The places to stay in Galata are Karaköy, Istiklal Avenue, and Galata Tower. Also, don’t miss a stroll across the Galata Bridge.  3. Taksim On the European side of the city, Taksim is located on Galata’s north. Here, hotel options are diverse, and it has a vibrant nightlife.  Furthermore, it is a shopper’s delight!  However, with so many shops, hotels, and restaurants around and a vibrant nightlife, this locality can get crowded and noisy.  Nevertheless, from Taksim, you can enjoy a stroll on Istiklal Avenue, visit the Republic Monument, and the Taksim Mosque.  In addition, it is the best place in Istanbul to try local street food and enjoy a ride in vintage red trams.  4. Kadıköy and Üsküdar Across the Bosphorus, Kadıköy and Üsküdar have the soul of Istanbul. Also, food and accommodation in this Asian part of the city are much cheaper than in other regions.  However, it is quite far away from the city center, and the hotel options here are limited.  Nevertheless, the places to see near Kadıköy and Üsküdar are Kadıköy Market, the promenade’s waterfront, and Çamlıca Mosque.  From here, you can also take a ferry to explore the European parts of the city.  Where To Stay In Istanbul? It’s beyond the Colosseum and Roman history.  We have a different guide on the main attractions in Rome if you only want to learn about the iconic attractions.  So, let me take you on a trip to Rome through my eyes.  Also, I am happy that combating overtourism in Rome has finally been taken up seriously. If you are a foreign tourist, you will have to pay €2 to visit the Trevi Fountain during the daytime from February 2026.  Nevertheless, here are my favorite things to do in Rome.  What Are The Best Things To Do In Rome?  Timeless, Rome has the power to add a new favorite shade to your list of favorites. Or, you can have a trip to the past at every corner you look!  It takes a lifetime to understand the true essence of Rome.  1. Rediscover The Shade Of Ocher  Ocher is the color you begin and end your day in Rome with. The street light, which plays the perfect complement to the Sun, also creates the same magic when bouncing off the buildings.  Especially during the winter months, when the sky of Rome is bright blue, the old buildings stand as the eternal witness. Guess their color? It’s ocher.  Also, if you ask me which city wears decay the best, it’s Rome for sure. 2. Exploring The Pantheon (Yes Again!) The Pantheon never gets old for me. A building that has been standing for 2000 years feels magical.  Also, one great thing I noticed last time was how they are managing the crowd. You have to pre-book it. So, you cannot just walk in.  You can even book your fast-track tickets for the Pantheon.  It’s an irony that this temple for all (Pan) gods (Theos) is not revered as the other architectural icons of the world. However, for me, it’s most cryptic and intriguing, even the Colosseum.  3. Visiting The Colosseum And Roman Forum (You Cannot Miss It, Right)?  I got inside the Flavian amphitheater last time. However, if you are a first-timer, you can make proper plans and book a ticket online in advance.  Also, with each ticket, you will get an entry to the Palatine Hill and the Roman Forum. However, if you want to explore the rare corners of the Colosseum, such as the attic or the underground, you will need to buy separate tickets.  Moreover, let’s make this clear to you! You will need an English-speaking guide. It does not matter how much you have read about the Colosseum. The anecdotes they share and the way they help to navigate have no match. Also, it is through their stories that you will see the Gladiators in Rome coming alive in front of your eyes.  4. Exploring The Vatican Museums  We all know that Vatican City is one of the countries near Italy, and it is an enclaved microstate.  The Vatican Museums are like miles of artwork. The museums have around 70000 artworks in their 24 different sections.  The gallery of maps was the most fascinating for me as a traveler and travel writer. It took around 3 years to get completed.  Also, the Bramante Staircase itself is an attraction, and I spent quite some time near it. However, the Vatican Museums need better crowd management. Also, please note that the museums are now open at 8 AM instead of 9 AM for better visitor management.  5. Making A Wish At Trevi Fountain  I have already mentioned the fee imposed for visiting the Trevi Fountain. And it was much-needed, as the last time I was in Rome, there were around 60000 people near the front basin of the fountain.  Still, you cannot miss the fountain during the sunrise. And a tourist staple?  To make a wish and throw the coin in the fountain water. These little cheesy things never get old.  6. Walking Up The Spanish Steps  Are you looking for free things to do in Rome? Just walk up the iconic Spanish steps.  These steps are picture-perfect and a favorite for tourists looking for Instagram snaps. The steps get their name from the Spanish Embassy at the bottom. However, a Frenchman built the stairs, and the French Church at the top offers you some moments of quietude.  The steps are also pretty close to Via del Corso, the main shopping street of Rome. Also, you will find different cobbled alleys and quaint piazzas. Any particular favorite?  Yes, Piazza del Popolo won my heart.  7. Taking A Walk Around Trastevere Rome is walkable, and it is the epicenter of various trendy neighborhoods. Trastevere was my favorite among them.  Transtevere has beautiful cobblestone streets, exuding the perfect dark academia vibes. Also, drinking an Aperol Spritz and watching people here are some of my favorite things to do in Rome.  I had my food at Tonnarello, and the chef’s kiss was the gelato I had while walking back to Centro Storico. In this context, you will find many of the best hotels in Rome in the Centro Storico area.  I prefer walking across the Ponte Sisto to reach Trastevere and explore its cobblestone streets.  8. Browsing The Borghese Gallery Borghese Gallery is a small building on the eastern edge of Villa Borghese. It is a sprawling park, spanning an area of 200 acres.  Now, here comes the catch! With the “small” word attached to it, you will think that you can just walk in. However, the gallery limits the number of visitors.  So, if you don’t prebook, the tickets can get sold out.  Enjoy the works of Raphael, Bernini, and Caravaggio at the Borghese Gallery.  9. Exploring The Lesser-Known Side Of Rome: The Southeast I took a scooter from the Centro Storico, and it was great to explore places like San Saba and Ripa. Away from the crowd, the first major encounter here was the Circus Maximus.  And it was a goosebump moment, without exaggerating a bit! It was the place where chariot races took place, and 25000 Romans were witnesses to them.  Then, I continued walking toward Roseto Comunale and reached Giardino degli Aranci. It is a garden of orange trees, and it has Terrazza Aventino, or the terrace from where you can enjoy amazing views.  The next destination was the Piramide di Caio Cestio. A pyramid in Rome? Yes, it is. Finally, I reached the Baths of Caracalla. The history of the bath goes back to 215 AD. The fun thing is that here you will get 4D goggles for a small fee and get a virtual tour of what the Bath looked like back then.  If you want to explore further southeast, you can visit the Aurelian Walls and the Appian Way. 10. And The Piazza's Time!  I don’t know how many people care to talk about piazzas when discussing the best things to do in Rome.  From the beautiful Piazza Navona to the Piazza del Popolo, every piazza has a page to add to the glorious history of Italy.  11. Trying Out The Best Italian Food  Milky gelatos, Neapolitan-style pizzas, and homemade pastas are the three main attractions for a foodie in Italy.  However, you must also try the gnocchi, cannoli, and tiramisu. Which is colder: Minus 40°C or Minus 40°F? The question appears simple, at least at a glance. But if you think about it, it does open an interesting window into the dynamic world of temperature, rather, how we tend to measure temperature.  Moreover, it also gives insight into why different people use different measurement systems across the globe.  The most fascinating part? How do these systems even relate to extreme temperatures?  The answer might actually surprise you. -40°C and -40°F are exactly equal. Yep! That’s right - it is the point of meeting for the two temperature scales.  On that note, let’s dissect and unpack why this even happens.  More importantly, what else do you need to know about the two temperature scales before you can plan your next mountain escapade.  Celsius Vs Fahrenheit: What’s The Difference? I already answered this question in the very beginning - both are the same! It is the point at which the two scales meet.  So, if you use the conversation formula I have listed above, then: -40°C × 9/5 + 32 = -40°F Also, this is the only point where Fahrenheit and Celsius readings match.  Then, why does it confuse all of us? It is mainly because of three primary reasons, as per my understanding:  Most individuals don’t really encounter extreme weather conditions. So, they do not really come across this overlap point.  Secondly, in most countries, the education system teaches only one scale. As a result, there is little or no intuitive comparison.  Finally, Fahrenheit readings are usually larger for both outdoor and room temperatures. For example, 50°F is equivalent to 10°C. This automatically makes most individuals assume that the two scales don’t match.  Where Does It Hit -40 On Earth? Places like Greenland, Northern Canada, Siberia, and some regions of Scandinavia go down to -40 regularly during the winter months.  For example: In February 2021, temperatures dipped to -43°C in Sweden.  Siberia, Canada, and Yukon also experience these levels regularly.  In these regions, both Fahrenheit and Celsius are the same - you will shiver equally.  In this context, I have a fun fact about the coldest temperatures recorded on Earth: In 1983, Vostok Station, located in Antarctica, recorded −128.6°F (-89.2°C) (Source: Britannica)  That is literally double what you will feel at -40°. More importantly, it is a real-world reminder that extreme weather conditions and environments exist on Earth.  How Cold Does It Feel At -40°? The truth is that whether it is -40°F or -40°C, you will feel the same. And trust me, I’m not kidding - you will literally shiver!  In February 2021, I experienced -40°C in Yukon. My thermometer read -40°F, and I experienced frostbite risk within minutes. Whether it’s -40°C or -40°F, the result is the same: Your skin will freeze within minutes without the right protection.  Vehicles might not even start. Metal will stick to the skin.  Your eyelashes might freeze.  At -40°, it is dangerously cold regardless of what scale you are using.  Also, the wind is so chilly that you will shiver and can fall sick or even die without the right gear and equipment.  How -40° Feels On The Human Body? So, I can’t just keep telling you guys that it is going to be dangerously cold.  Instead, it is much better to give you all the real picture of how the human body is bound to react at sub-zero temperatures:  Temp (°F/°C)Impact On The Human Body-76°F/-60°CIt is painful to even breathe. Also, exposed body parts, including eyes, will freeze.-40°F/-40°CSkin will freeze in two minutes. Also, metal will stick to the skin. -22°F/-30°CExposed and unprotected skin, including eyelashes, will freeze in ten minutes. -4°F/-20°CNumbness begins to set in, with an increasing risk of frostbite. 14°F/-10°CThe skin begins to sting, with a risk of frostnip if exposed. 32°F/0°CBreathing becomes visibly tough. Also, fingers stiffen in a few minutes.  Even without any chilly winds, subzero temperatures are hazardous, especially if you are not prepared.  At -40°, both Fahrenheit and Celsius, there is only one brutal truth: without protection and preparation, it is dangerous and life-threatening.  Winter Hiking Hazards You Should Know About: Winter can alter any landscape radically, striking a balance between mesmerizing beauty and quirky dangers.  And while it is impossible to talk about all hazards in detail, I’ve compiled all the possible winter hiking hazards and their mitigation strategies below: Winter Hiking HazardMitigation StrategyFrostbite & HypothermiaCheck the weather, pack extra clothes, and layer well.Slip & FallUse microspikes or crampons and trekking poles.Getting LostUse a compass, maps, and a GPS. In addition, I’ve touched upon the common (but very dangerous) hiking hazards that you can come across at sub-zero temperatures in the mountains in detail: 1. Ice: Of course, you need to worry about ice! In the winter months, melt-freeze cycles turn hiking trails into slippery ice. Similarly, this can also happen on popular tourist routes where snow is compressed over a long period of time.  If you slip on these icy trails, it will lead to bruises and bumps. Moreover, a bad slip and fall can lead to serious wrist, ankle, or back injuries.  As a result, it is best to carry metal-tipped trekking poles and traction for additional stability in such conditions.  2. Avalanches: In the United States, avalanches (as per avalanche.org) kill between 25 and 30 people every winter. Moreover, the injury rates are much higher.  Most victims are ice climbers, snowmobilers, snowboarders, and backcountry skiers. However, oblivious hikers do get caught in avalanches occasionally.  The worst part? Nearly 95% of avalanches begin on slopes that are between 30 and 45 degrees in steepness.  However, the snow ends up traveling down to the flat terrain - and it even appears to be safe to an untrained eye.  As a result, it is vital to consult topo maps, check trip reports, and talk with local experts before you set out. That is your best shot at safety in the face of an avalanche.  3. Glaciers: Many of the iconic summits in the United States are guarded by glaciers.  While there are several snowfields across the western part of the United States - mostly misnamed as glaciers - you will find true glaciers mostly in the Pacific Northwest and in the far north.  Moreover, these are active glaciers that moves around, forming cracks with time. As a result, these fissures, A.K.A crevasses, lie under the snow, hidden from the human eye. Naturally, fatal falls - and unexpected ones - become a major possibility.  So, it’s best not to step out on glaciated terrain unless you have some experience in both glacier navigation and snow travel. This also includes improving your fissure-rescue skills.  4. Steep Snow: The challenge and adventure of climbing snow-covered, steep slopes is certainly thrilling.  Recently, I had the opportunity to try out snow climbing, and while it was thrilling, I can’t overstate the importance of safety and experience.  It’s so much more technical than it appears visually - if you slip even once, you can slide down the steep slope. Also, you have to know: How can you assess the snow conditions around you? Use crampons.  Take a fall with the help of an ice axe.  Additionally, it is best to be familiar with avalanches and safety first. Because a majority of snow climbs will require you to cross terrain prone to avalanches.  What To Know Before Planning Your Next Mountain Escapade? 9 Tips That Can Keep You Safe! Safety in weather extremes, especially in the mountains, requires careful preparation, specialized equipment, and a constant awareness of your body’s condition.  Moreover, the combination of high winds, rapid changes in weather, and freezing temperatures leads to life-threatening conditions. And that too in minutes.  This includes the risk of both frostbite and hypothermia. Moreover, preparing for freezing temperatures is incomplete without strict layering, high-calorie nutrition, and waterproof gear. And still it’s not enough - surprised? Well, don’t be! Instead, scroll down for the internet’s most comprehensive list to prepare for survival in freezing temperatures in the mountains. 1. Stay Hydrated: Problem: Dehydration is very common in freezing temperatures, much like hotter regions with arid weather conditions.  How? The cold weather conditions can easily suppress thirst. But the dry air in the mountains and high levels of physical activity will make your body dehydrated - and this will happen faster than you can possibly imagine.  Moreover, dehydration can lead to dizziness, fatigue, and headaches.  Solution: As a result, you should try carrying a thermos with herbal teas (like chamomile, tulsi, or ginger) or just warm water with lemon and honey. These can hydrate you, keep you warm from the inside, and boost immunity.  Also, on this note, avoid caffeine or any caffeinated drinks since they will dehydrate you faster.   2. Nourish Yourself: Problem: Your body will burn a lot of calories to stay warm in freezing temperatures.  As a result, even if you think that a bowl of hot Maggi seems like an appealing meal for the mountains, it is crucial to balance comfort and nutrition.  Solution: So, you should focus on energy-dense and high-calorie food items like seeds, whole grains, and roasted nuts to ensure high energy levels in the body.  Moreover, you can consider adding warming ingredients to your food. Ingredients like turmeric, garlic, and ginger can fight cold and improve digestion.  Also, if you do end up eating a steaming bowl, then add boiled eggs or vegetables for a healthy, protein-packed version.  On that note, here’s a list of things you can eat: Beef jerky.  Trail mix. Nuts. Milk chocolate. Pretzels or chips. Cheese and deli meat. Tortillas or crackers. Pizza slices. Pumpkin or banana bread. Peanut butter sandwiches. 3. Protect Your Lips And Skin From Dryness: Problem: Cold and dry air is not good for the skin - it strips the skin of moisture. And this in turn leads to dry hands, irritated skin, and cracked lips.  This is highly uncomfortable and causes skin damage if you don’t address it within minutes.  Solution: As a result, always use a moisturizer that is thick and nourishing before stepping out. This, in turn, makes you feel colder.  Solution: The only solution here is not to sit in the same spot for too long.  So, try out light activities such as walking, stretching, or even a few squats to ensure proper blood circulation. Also, it feels good to do light physical activities after a long day of trekking.  5. Take Care Of Your Altitude Sickness: Problem: At high altitudes, you can expect oxygen levels to fluctuate and drop. This, in turn, can cause fatigue, nausea, or dizziness.  Solution: You should give enough time to your body - that way, your body will be able to adjust. As a result, it is best to take it easy on day 1.  Moreover, drink lots of water and eat food items that are rich in antioxidants. This includes berries, nuts, and fresh fruits. That way, your body will be able to fight the stress and pressure of altitude.  If you are feeling unwell at any point, don’t push too hard. Rest is very important.  6. Support Your Body’s Immune System: Problem: The blend of altitude and cold weather can easily weaken your body’s immune system. This, in turn, will make you prone to illnesses.  Solution: Incorporate food items that are rich in Vitamin C, like amla or oranges, in your daily diet in the mountains to boost your body’s immune system.  Moreover, warm soups are also great - but ensure these have vegetables, lentils, or even chicken stock. In addition, you can try massaging your feet with a nice, warm balm. Why? It will prevent dryness and improve circulation.  8. Breathe Smartly For Avoiding Cold-Air Effects: Problem: If you directly breathe in icy, cold air, then it will irritate your lungs.  Trust me on this one! It has happened to me. And then you will start coughing. Some people also feel a tightness in their chests.  Solution: When you start feeling chilly, try to breathe through your nose and avoid doing it through your mouth. This will keep you warm, moisturizing the air even before it can reach your lungs. Also, this will help you to keep respiratory problems at bay.  9. Prioritize Mental Wellness: Problem: The beautiful solitude of the mountains can be very peaceful. However, at times it can get very overwhelming. As a result, staying healthy mentally is just as crucial as looking after yourself physically.  Solution: Take some time for yourself so that you can practice mindfulness - and while doing so, don’t forget to appreciate the beauty around you.  Moreover, you can consider carrying a journal for jotting down your reflections and thoughts.  Also, it is healthy to count on your group to stay connected. Why? Sharing experiences together can motivate everyone and lift spirits.

History And Historical Sites Of Puerto Rico   Old San Juan, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a testament to the rich history of Puerto Rico. It has cobblestone streets, picturesque forts, and heritage architecture. The oldest executive mansion, and the oldest still-in-use executive mansion in the Americas, is La Fortaleza. It is the Governor’s residence in Old San Juan. Furthermore, you can visit the San Felipe del Morro Fortress, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, here. Another major draw is the El Capitolio, or the seat of government in Puerto Rico. In addition, the Fortín de San Gerónimo and Fortín San Cristobal have a history dating back to the 1700s or during the Spanish colonization. It is located in a small cove, creating a beautiful combination with the expansive Condado Beach.  In just another ten minutes, you will arrive at the stunning Isla Verde Beach. The golden sands are sheltered by towering palm trees, with numerous restaurants, bars, and shops in close proximity.  Surfers should also check out the appropriately named Surfer’s Beach in Aguadilla. A top surfing spot in Puerto Rico is located on the north side, featuring a beautiful point break, particularly during winter.  3. Whale Watching In Puerto Rico Vs Dominican Republic  Observing whales is an excellent experience for all tourists in the Dominican Republic. Thousands of humpback whales travel into nearby waters each year from December to March.  The finest way to observe these incredible creatures is through boat tours departing from Puerto Plata. Around 300 whales have been observed simultaneously in Samaná Bay, while Silver Banks is also a key location.  Puerto Rico isn't widely recognized for whales, yet the resort town of Rincon, located on the west coast, is the focal point for them. South India has been my go-to place whenever I lacked clarity about “What is Next?” After exploring the beaches in Jaffna, Sri Lanka, I wanted to continue my journey, and my destination was the Western Coast of India.  The quiet Varkala Beach or Papanasam Beach with dramatic cliffs won me over.  With golden sands, blue waters, and gentle waves, Varkala Beach is therapeutic. There were food wraps and food wraps everywhere. Now, this shows a lack of maintenance and the absence of civic sense.  Does The Varkala Beach Have A Shade? No, the Varaka Beach does not have any designated or constructed shade. Also, naturally, there is rarely any shaded spot with very few trees around.  Furthermore, there are some lizards in the sand here. They don’t bother anyone, but it was a big issue for me.  Finally, I rented a shade and a chair from a clifftop cafe.  However, be ready get heavily tanned as the Sun here is so strong that no amount of sunscreen can protect you.  How Safe Is Varkala Beach?  Varkala Beach is a safe place, and it is one of the best destinations for a solo trip in India. It has a laid-back vibe, typical of the coastal areas of South India.  However, I could not find any lifeguards for the longer stretch of the beach. So, swimming here is something you need to do at your own risk.  Also, the current here is very strong. So, if you have plans to swim with kids, you have to be very careful.  How To Get To Varkala? The Varkala Beach is closest to the Trivandrum International Airport (TRV). The distance is around 45 kilometers. Furthermore, the nearest railway station, Varkala Sivagiri Railway Station, is a little over 4 km away.  However, the Trivandrum Central (TVC) is at a distance of 1 hour, and the Kollam Junction (QLN) Railway Station is around 40 minutes away. Both these stations have frequent train options from different parts of India.  1. How To Get To Varkala Beach From Trivandrum Airport I booked an Uber to reach the Varkala Beach from the Trivandrum Airport, and the charge was INR 1160. This is the safest option if you are new to the place.  Local cabs and other online car rentals are also available. However, if you cannot negotiate, they will charge you between INR 1500 and INR 1600.  Furthermore, the cheapest option to travel from Trivandrum to Varkala is to take a bus run by the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC). Buses are available every 15 minutes.  However, the KSRTC bus stop is around 15 km away from the beach. So, from there, you will again have to take a local bus or taxi.  2. How To Travel From The Varkala Railway Station To Varkala Beach?  You can take a local taxi to reach the beach from the Varkala Railway Station. Local buses are also available. What Are The Best Beaches In Varkala? The Varkala Beach is the main attraction in the town of Varkala. However, it has many other beaches, such as the Black Sand Beach, Odayam Beach, Kappil Beach and Beach Park, Edava Beach, and Thiruvambadi Beach.  1. If the Varkala Beach is overcrowded, you can consider this one as an alternative.  2. Ltd.  Furthermore, there are hotels near Varkala Beach, such as InDa Hotel, the Lost Hostels, and Maison Sangham.  I stayed at the Bougainvillea Homestay, which is very close to the Varkala beach cliffs.  When To Visit Varkala? October to March, or the winter and spring seasons, are ideal for visiting Varkala.The rainfall is minimal in these months, and the temperature hovers around 20 to 30 degrees Celsius.  Furthermore, less rain and moderate weather conditions are ideal for watersports such as jet skiing and paragliding.  However, during my visit in February, I found the water current to be quite strong for swimming. So, check with the locals and the fishermen around before getting into the water.  What Are The Best Things To Do In Varkala Beach? The Varkala Beach is a welcome relief if you are exploring South India. It is not a place if you are planning an action-packed holiday.  However, try these watersports.  Surfing At Varkala Beach You will find places such as Soul and Surf here to camp and learn surfing. Furthermore, the ideal surfing condition for a visitor depends on their expertise level.  For Beginners: November to February For Sufers of Intermediate or Advanced Levels: October to March Advanced Surfers: The Monsoon Season or June to August  Paragliding Varkala Paragliding is the most adventurous thing you can try at Varkala Beach. You can have a hawk-eye view of the water and the golden sand by flying from one end of the cliff to another.  Also, paragliding feels magical during sunset. Varkala Beach Nightlife  The bars, restaurants, and rooftop cafes of the North Cliff are the epicenters of a happening nightlife in Varkala.  These places are ideal for candlelit dinners and enjoying a lively vibe with DJs and live acoustic music performances. What Are The Places To Visit Near The Varkala Beach? Varkala is an ideal place for backpackers and budget travelers. However, many religious and spiritual travelers combine a Varkala beach trip with a visit to Sree Janardhana Swamy Temple and the Sivagiri Mutt.  The Sree Janardhana Swamy Temple is a 2000-year-old Vishnu shrine. It is associated with the legends of Lord Brahma and Narada Muni.  On the other hand, the Sivagiri Mutt is home to the saints and sanyasins of the order started by Sree Narayana Gurudev. His primary teaching was “One Caste, One Religion, One God for Man.” Established in 1904, this Mutt practices inclusiveness.  What Are The Places For Eating And Drinking In Varkala? There are many cafes and restaurants in Varkala. I chose a humble, local place for lunch and dinner.  However, to experience the cafe culture here, I chose a few upscale places.  1. Lunch At Vinayaka Vegetarian Restaurant I ordered a veg Keralan thali at the Vinayaka Vegetarian Restaurant. The rice grains were thick, and they were filling. Furthermore, they served the rice with five types of sides, pickle, and papad. It only cost me INR 90.  2. Dinner At Chimney Restaurant At the Chimney Restaurant, it was a continuation of my great seafood experience in Jaffna. The staff here suggested that I try a Kerala fish curry.  The fish was fresh, and the curry was sharp and spicy (a little less than Jaffna). It was a perfect balance to the acidic element of rice.  You must also try the village-style chicken curry here. It is a family-friendly restaurant.  3. Cafés I was at Cafe Trip is Life during sunset. The view was amazing, and I loved the grilled prawns and mojitos there. A bit pricey, but worth it! Another café I loved here was Café Sarwaa. I was impressed with the Bohemian decor the moment I entered the place. I tried some samosas and banana pancakes there.  However, you can eat here the whole day. Their paratha and Kerala beef curry are the most famous.  Is Varkala Worth It? Should I Just Go To Goa? The only similarity between Varkala and Goa beaches is the bohemian vibe. However, both beaches offer different experiences.  Varkala is more nature-focused with the landscape of the Varkala Beach and a view of the Arabian Sea. Furthermore, it is more about relaxation and wellness thanks to the Yoga centers frequently found here.  However, despite watersports and adventure facilities such as paragliding and surfing, Varkala is not as happening as Goa. Goa offers a wider range of watersports.  Moreover, the nightlife of Goa is more vibrant.  So, if you want a spiritual and wellness retreat and some quiet beach time, Varkala is the best. The 2000-year-old Vishnu temple is an added attraction here.  For a vibe and a high-energy experience, choose Goa.  Varkala Beach: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) Here are the frequently asked questions and answers about the Varkala Beach.  1. Malacca gave me pieces of history, an insane fusion of cultures and cuisine that I can still remember now, and plenty of tourist attractions with meaning behind them.  There are many similarities between Georgetown, Penang, and Malacca – I hear that line all the time – but Malacca has a quieter atmosphere that you can feel when you walk through the streets. For starters, Georgetown and Malacca are both UNESCO World Heritage sites. You have no excuse not to visit either of these cities.  Malacca is located right between Singapore and KL, and it’s also a convenient spot to visit if you’re going to be in the area. Alright, no excuses. Need to visit Malacca in a day? Yes, you can definitely visit it on a day trip if you’re coming from Kuala Lumpur. I’ve also compiled a list of things to do in Malacca! How To Reach Malacca? Malacca can be found on the southeastern coast of Malaysia. The city lies nearly midway between Kuala Lumpur and Singapore, though it is slightly nearer to KL.  Buses to Malacca operate from Kuala Lumpur and Singapore, in addition to routes from Penang. You can also catch buses directly from KL Airport if you prefer not to spend time traveling there.  As I stated, taking a day trip from KL to Malacca is quite simple. How To Get Around Malacca? Although walking was my favored way to navigate Malacca, there are other alternatives available.  You can effortlessly arrange light-up rickshaws, taxis, and Grab ride shares to navigate the city.  If you’re coming to Malacca by bus, check if your hotel offers a free shuttle, as mine does.  If not, since Malaka Sentral is 3km away from Jonker Street, you'll have to use a taxi or take the local bus. Where To Stay In Malacca? Determining accommodation in Malacca should be straightforward if you concentrate on Chinatown.  There is no shortage of budget accommodations in Malacca, and I happily recommend Hotel Hong.  Simple and affordable, the employees were pleasant, and it was located in a fascinating neighborhood near the community mosque.  It contributed to making my time in Malacca a pleasant experience. What Are The Unique Things To Do In Malacca? Malacca's diverse cultures have influenced its captivating history, food, and architecture.  There are numerous activities in Malacca that allow you to discover these aspects of the city even more. View these eight as your foundation. 1. Exploring The Dutch Square Dutch Square is likely the ideal location to begin a visit to Malacca as it lies at the heart of the city's historic center.  Situated by the city's riverbank, this square is visually striking and carries historical importance.  At the center of Dutch Square lies a lively garden and fountain that are pleasant, but the stunning Dutch colonial buildings surrounding this square are the true highlight.  Painted uniformly in an earthy red hue, it's improbable you ever envisioned Malaysia resembling this.  However, Malaysia has many reminders of its colonial history, just like Malacca. This assortment of reminders truly possesses an impressive appearance. The primary attractions of Dutch Square include the Stadthuys, Christ Church Melaka, and the Malacca Clock Tower.  All were constructed in the 17th century by Dutch settlers, thus the square's name.  The Stadthuys, previously the home of the Governor, now contains an ethnographic museum. 2. Climbing To St. Paul’s Church As you ascend the side of the Stadthuys, you ought to notice a tiny staircase leading up the hill a little.  As you progress along this path, you’ll make your way to the summit of the hill and the atmospheric remains of St Paul’s Church.  The remnants of this roofless church hold a prominent position atop St Paul’s Hill, offering views across much of Malacca.  It's not a very challenging hike, and the church serves as a natural pause along the Malacca sights trail. Originally constructed by the Portuguese in the 1500s, it was harmed, restored, and renamed by the Dutch when they seized Malacca in the 1600s.  For more than a hundred years, the church has remained in decay, its stained walls serving as a testament to Malacca's intricate history. Now, if you walk around Malacca, you’ll come across what looks like a real Sultanate Palace. Here’s the thing: it’s not the original.  The Melaka Sultanate Palace you see today is a detailed reconstruction from the 1980s. The reconstruction work took the old records as a guide.  Inside, there’s a museum that really dives into the culture and history of the city. Stroll through the gardens or check out the museum’s exhibits—you’ll see plenty about local traditions, clothing, legends, and more.  Honestly, it’s one of the most interesting spots to visit if you want to get a real feel for Malacca’s past. 5. Seeing The Melaka Riverfront Although there are more famous attractions in Malacca, the river undeniably stands as the city's primary landmark.  Winding through the larger city before dividing the Old Town from the colonial areas, the Melaka River is difficult to overlook.  When Malacca was a prominent port city, the river played a role in its prosperity. Nowadays, it fulfills its role by providing guests with river cruises and beautiful views. 6. Eating At Jonker Street Undoubtedly, no street in Malacca is more renowned than Jonker Street.  While it often appears to be just a primary road in the Old Town, the atmosphere shifts significantly on Friday and Saturday nights.  You see, that’s when the renowned Jonker Street night market takes place, and the street transforms into a crowd of people and food vendors.  Naturally, with my luck, I ended up overlooking this important attraction entirely by visiting at the wrong point in the week.  The Jonker Street night market is an excellent spot to sample traditional local Nyonya dishes along with innovative new foods.  To get a sense of what’s available, try the food here.  7. Wandering Through Old Chinatown However, the Old Town of Malacca offers much more than merely Jonker Street. Venture in any direction from this point and you'll quickly discover tighter streets, where each home exudes unique charm.  Half Chinatown and half Old Town, this district reveals another aspect of Malacca’s cultural blend.  Most impressively, distanced from the hustle of other areas in Malacca, strolling through this more tranquil section of the city allows you to absorb all the intricacies.  Although many of these historic residences feature weathered exteriors, several are completely deserted.  But isn’t that character, though? In any case, the softer atmosphere here is evident, with individuals simply going about their daily routines and extending a cheerful wave.  Malaysia can be chaotic and noisy at times, making my walks here distinctly memorable.  8. Visiting The Cheng Hoon Teng Temple Walk around the streets of Malacca’s Chinatown, and you’ll spot plenty of temples—no surprise there.  But it’s not just Chinese temples lining the streets. You’ll also find mosques and Hindu temples mixed in, which gives the area this cool, unexpected blend. In Malacca, Cheng Hoon Teng Temple stands out above the rest.  It sits right across from another temple, Xiang Lin Si, but Cheng Hoon Teng is the one with the real history behind it. They built it back in the mid-1600s, which actually makes it the oldest Chinese temple in Malaysia. When you look at all the intricate details, the carvings, and the roof ornaments, it’s wild to think how well everything’s held up after all these years. Cheng Hoon Teng does not belong to just one religion.  Inside, you’ll find people practicing Taoism, Confucianism, and Buddhism, all under one roof. That kind of mix is rare, and it gives the temple a unique energy you don’t see everywhere. Other Places You Can Add To Your Itinerary In Malacca Although I’ve mentioned the most remarkable and significant activities to engage in Malacca, they aren't the sole options.  Malacca hosts numerous other cultural sites, featuring a variety of museums. However, it also features a playful aspect, ranging from its Upside Down House to the Taming Sari Tower to the Oceanarium.  Generally, you will primarily remain in locations close to Chinatown or Dutch Square.
