Wadduwa, Sri Lanka: A Quiet Stretch Of Coast Worth Slowing Down For

Wadduwa is very close to Colombo, just 35 kilometers south. You reach it in less than an hour’s drive down the Galle Road or the Southern Expressway.

However, it is easy to miss Wadduwa on the way to Bentota or Hikkaduwa

It is true that Wadduwa does not have a single big attraction. Still, the fishing boats going out at dawn, coconut palms leaning over empty sand, and an unhurried rhythm make it different from built-up beach towns further south.

How To Reach Wadduwa?

Wadduwa, Sri Lanka: A Quiet Stretch Of Coast Worth Slowing Down For

Wadduwa is well-connected by bus, train, and private transport options. However, since the distance from Colombo is just around 35 km, traveling by a private taxi is the best option.

By Taxi

Traveling from Colombo City Center to Wadduwa via the Galle Road is a journey of around 40-50 minutes.

The private taxi charged me around LKR 7500.

However, if you are traveling directly from the airport, the travel time will be around 1.5 hours, and the cost will be close to LKR 12000.

Here, you need to keep one thing in mind regarding the charges. During negotiations, cross-check whether the toll charges for the Southern Expressway (E01) are included in the fare or not.

By Train

If you are a budget traveler and want to enjoy the view of the southern coast, a train ride is a more suitable option.

The distance between the Colombo Fort Railway Station and Wadduwa Railway Station by train is just 32.47 km.

Trains on this route are available from 4:20 AM to 9:36 PM at regular intervals on a daily basis. Also, the travel time is around 50 minutes.

The ticket prices for this train ride are LKR 80, LKR 200, and LKR 350 for 3rd class, 2nd class, and 1st class tickets, respectively (Source: https://www.railway.gov.lk/).

This is the best option if you are traveling solo or do not have much luggage with you.

By Bus

You can travel from Colombo to Wadduwa by bus also. You can catch the route number 100/2 bus or any bus going to Galle or Matara from the Central Bus Stop in Colombo Fort.

The travel time is around 50-60 minutes, and the ticket price is just around LKR 150. However, if you want to travel in an AC bus, the ticket price will be approximately LKR 250.

What Are The Top Attractions In Wadduwa?

Wadduwa does not have bucket-list destinations. However, all it takes is hiring a tuk-tuk, which will cost around LKR 150 to 400 for short rides.

It will take you to the serene beach, Richmond Castle, and Kalutara Bodhiya. You can even visit the Kaluwamodara Bridge and the beautiful Kalu River.

Also, Wadduwa is known for its wellness tourism. You can indulge in the magic of Ayurvedic treatment here.

1. The Beach

Wadduwa, Sri Lanka: A Quiet Stretch Of Coast Worth Slowing Down For

I started exploring Wadduwa with the beach as the starting point. It is a sheer contrast to Mirissa or Unawatuna if you are expecting high drama.

The sand here is soft and golden, and the water is calm.

Also, the coconut trees line the shore in a way that feels more like a working coastal town than a resort strip.

Watching The Fishermen At Dawn At The Beach

During my stay in Wadduwa, I used to wake up very early. It was just to observe the fishermen at work at dawn.

They used to push the brightly painted boats into the surf. They also checked and mended their nets.

There were no tourists in sight, proving once again that Wadduwa is a fishing community first and a holiday destination second.

Swimming And Conditions

The calm waters of Wadduwa make it a safe destination for swimming. However, like the other southern coastal destinations, the waters here also face occasional rip currents.

Wadduwa is also famous for coconut plantations.

These plantations back up right against the shoreline in places. That greenery is part of what makes the beach feel less commercialized than some of its neighbors.

2. Ayurveda And Slowing Down

Wadduwa, Sri Lanka: A Quiet Stretch Of Coast Worth Slowing Down For

Ayurvedic wellness tourism is the biggest attraction in Wadduwa. It has a number of resorts that have reputations specifically around traditional Sri Lankan healing practices.

You can opt for the following wellness practices in Wadduwa.

  • Herbal Oil Massage
  • Steam Treatments
  • Detox Programs

I am not usually one for spa itineraries.

However, I gave in for an afternoon and came away understanding the appeal. The cost of steam treatments and herbal oil massage came to around LKR 6000.

It is a genuinely different kind of beach holiday, oriented around rest rather than activity, and Wadduwa has quietly become one of the country’s go-to spots for it.

3. Richmond Castle And Kalutara Bodhiya

After an Ayurvedic massage and complete rejuvenation, I took a short trip to neighboring Kalutara.

It was just a 20-minute drive along the coast. I visited Richmond Castle and Kalutara Bodhiya there.

Richmond Castle

Wadduwa, Sri Lanka: A Quiet Stretch Of Coast Worth Slowing Down For

Richmond Castle is an early-1900s mansion built for a local Mudaliyar (a headman title from the colonial era).

It is an impressive 42-acre property blending colonial architecture with signature Sri Lankan styles.

The entry fee to the castle is LKR 100 for local adults, and as a foreigner, I had to pay LKR 500.

The entry fee may seem higher, considering it does not match the grandeur of a European castle.

However, given that all the proceeds go toward funding local schoolboys’ education, you will not mind paying the same.

The entry fee for the local schoolchildren to the castle is also very low, and it is just LKR 10.

Guides are available on-site and can walk you through the history in about forty minutes to an hour, and the grounds are open daily from 8 AM to 4 PM.

Kalutara Bodhiya

Wadduwa, Sri Lanka: A Quiet Stretch Of Coast Worth Slowing Down For

Kalutara Bodhiya, a major Buddhist temple and stupa, sits on the top of the river mouth.

Along with its religious significance, Kalutara Bodhiya stands out with its striking structure.

The hollow dagoba lets you walk inside and look up at painted panels depicting scenes from Buddhist scripture. This is something you see at every temple in Sri Lanka.

I have shared the details of visiting the Kalutara Bodhiya in my guide on the historic coastal town of Kalutara

4. Bridges, Rivers, And A Slower Kind Of Sightseeing

The Kalu River is the lifeline of Wadduwa and Kalutara. Furthermore, the Kaluwamodara Bridge connects the northern and southern parts of Kalutara across the Kalu River.

The bridge has an impressive arch design, and you can notice it while taking a tuk-tuk ride.

However, I opted for a scenic boat ride of 90 minutes for LKR 3500.

The short boat ride along the Kalutara River one afternoon wove through mangrove patches.

I also got a look at local fishing life from the water rather than the shore.

It is a quieter, more low-key version of the river safaris you will find further south in Bentota, and I actually preferred it for that reason. Fewer boats, more birdlife, no rush!

Day Trips From Wadduwa

Wadduwa, Sri Lanka: A Quiet Stretch Of Coast Worth Slowing Down For

Thanks to its central location on the western coast, Wadduwa is the ideal base for exploring the nearby coastal towns.

You can plan the following day trips from Wadduwa.

Bentota

About 45 minutes south, Bentota offers river safaris, water sports, and garden estates.

Brief Garden

The landscaped estate created by Sri Lankan artist Bevis Bawa is a worthwhile detour if you have any interest in tropical garden design or local art history.

Dehiwala Zoo

One of the older zoos in Asia, around 26 kilometers north, Dehiwala Zoo is an easy option if you are traveling with kids.

Pahiyangala

For something further afield, this prehistoric archaeological site near Yatagampitiya is about 40 kilometers from Kalutara.

It appeals if you are curious about Sri Lanka’s deeper human history rather than its colonial-era one.

Pahiyangala, or the Fa-Hiden Caves, has been home to prehistoric human beings around 37000 years ago, as backed by archaeological evidence

Such a fascinating site, the caves offer free entry, and they remain open for visitors from 6 AM to 6 PM.

However, you need to climb a staircase for around 20 minutes to reach the caves.

Food And Water Sports

Wadduwa, Sri Lanka: A Quiet Stretch Of Coast Worth Slowing Down For

Beyond the beach and the temples, Wadduwa gave me some of my simplest, best meals of the trip, and enough on-water options to fill an afternoon if lounging isn’t quite your speed.

Eating in Wadduwa

Eating in Wadduwa leans heavily, unsurprisingly, toward seafood.

The fresh catch sold right off the boats in the morning turns into curries and grilled fish by evening at the small local restaurants scattered along the coast road.

On The Water

For anyone wanting more than sunbathing, the calm-but-active waters here support jet skiing, windsurfing, and light surfing.

All of these felt more accessible and less crowded than the equivalent setups in Bentota or Hikkaduwa.

Here is a breakdown of the estimated costs for taking part in different watersports in Wadduwa.

WatersportsEstimated Cost (LKR)
Jet Skiing8000-12000
Banana Boat Ride5000-7000
Tube Ride6000-8000
Windsurfing / Wakeboarding10000-15000

I am mentioning all the charges here based on what the local organizers quoted me. The prices can change for your next trip.

Wadduwa is not a surf town in the way those places are, but if you just want to get out on the water without booking weeks in advance, Wadduwa makes it easy.

What Is The Best Time To Visit Wadduwa?

Wadduwa, Sri Lanka: A Quiet Stretch Of Coast Worth Slowing Down For

Like most of the western coast, Wadduwa is best visited between November and April, when the weather is dry and the seas are calmer.

This is also when the Ayurvedic resorts tend to be fullest.

So, it is worth booking ahead if that’s part of your plan.

The town holds a warm, tropical climate year-round, but the shoulder and monsoon months bring rougher water and less predictable weather.

Slowing Down At Wadduwa

Wadduwa is one of the best-kept secrets of Sri Lanka in the truest sense. Just 35 km away from Colombo, it is a place to slow down and be a part of a livelihood based on fishing.

Also, it is an important base for Kalutara and Bentota day trips due to its accessible location.

Still, Wadduwa is quieter and on its own. So, the mornings on the beach never felt like they belonged to anyone but the fishermen and me.

What Are The Things To Do In Sri Lanka? Beaches, Cities, Rocks, Wildlife And Colonial Architecture

BY  Sibashree Mar 25, 2026

“Love Sri Lanka, Always.” This has been the new campaign of Sri Lanka. Also, this campaign, coming at the time of the ongoing Gulf War, looks quite bold.  It projects the island country as a place that needs constant discovery.  And Sri Lanka has reaped the benefits of launching a bold campaign. It has crossed the mark of 100,000 tourists within the “first 18 days of the March in 2026.” Furthermore, while the marketing campaign has brought Sri Lankan tourism global visibility, the diversity of attractions makes it a powerhouse.  For example, I have been so much in love with Sri Lanka that I have made multiple visits and sometimes to the same place, years apart.  With the changes and developments, the country has still maintained its warmth, lush greenery, and human resilience. The sheer grit of the country has helped it win over the natural disasters such as the Tsunami, Cyclone Ditwah, and endless civil wars.  However, with diverse offerings, it may be difficult to choose the things to do in Sri Lanka. So, here are the places I loved the most.  What Are The Things To Do In Sri Lanka?  Keeping the spirit of the Indian Subcontinent alive, Sri Lanka beautifully portrays an inclusive picture.  For example, its southern and northern zones show a difference in language and culture. However, both are connected through the way of life, sunshine, and more.  Also, Sri Lanka has places such as the Ambuluwawa Tower, which is within a multireligious complex, showing how respectful the country is toward every religion.  1. Exploring The Tamil Culture And Temples In Jaffna Jaffna was the first place I visited in Sri Lanka as a backpacker. It is a hub of strong Tamil culture in Sri Lanka.  Furthermore, Jaffna has beautiful Hindu temples such as the Nallur Kandaswamy Kovil, the Naguleswaram Temple, the Nainativu Nagapooshani Amman Temple, etc.  Also, the beaches in Jaffna showcase the beauty of Northern Sri Lanka.  Moreover, the food in Jaffna is spicier than in any other part of Sri Lanka.  Overall, Jaffna is a world in itself where slow living and staying true to the roots are the best ways.  2. Hiking The Ritigala Forest Monastery Out of all my experiences in Sri Lanka, hiking the Ritigala Forest Monastery has been my silent favorite.  The history of the Ritigala Forest Monastery takes us to the 1st century BC. It has more than 70 caves and was once the abode of the monks of the “Pansukulika” sect.  Furthermore, located inside the Ritigala Forest Reserve, the remains of the ancient monastery are now surrounded by around 96 species of medicinal plants.  The presence of the medicinal plants further makes its association with the Ramayana stronger. 3. Visiting Uppuveli Beach, And Other Attractions In Trincomalee Trincomalee has the famous Uppuveli Beach. However, it would be wrong to assume that the things to do in Trincomalee are limited to beach activities.  You can visit the Thirukoneswaram Kovil Temple, Fort Frederick, Trincomalee Maritime and Naval History Museum, and the Trincomalee Market.  4. Visiting Mount Lavinia Beach The Mount Lavinia Beach is very close to Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka. This beach has a leisurely vibe with the local folks playing cricket and people taking a sun bath.  However, the main attraction here was the Sea Turtle Conservation Centre. It is located by the beach, and it buys eggs from the locals to hatch them.  5. Climbing Up The Ambuluwawa Tower At the top of the Ambuluwawa Mountain, the Ambuluwawa Tower is an important cultural landmark in Sri Lanka.  Its location is in the Ambuluwawa Biodiversity Complex, in Gampola. Also, it is just 20 km away from Kandy.  You can climb up its spiral stairs to reach the top of the tower and enjoy a panoramic view of the surroundings.  6. Exploring The Cultural Capital, Kandy Kandy, the cultural capital of Sri Lanka, has the beautiful Kandy Lake at the epicenter.  Furthermore, it is fighting with the aftermath of the Cyclone and Ditwah and remains crucial in the political and economic landscape of the country.  The most fascinating things to do in Kandy are visiting the Udawattakele Forest Reserve, bowing before the Bahirawakanda Vihara Buddha Statue, and visiting the Temple Of The Tooth.  7. Climbing Up The Sigiriya Rock The Sigiriya Rock is famous for its mythological significance and history, and its association with Buddhism.  King Kashyapa made the Sigiriya Rock his seat of power in 477-499 AD.  However, before that, it was a Buddhist monastery which later shifted to the Pidurangala Rock.  Also, it has a long history of archaeological discovery, and in 1982, it was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.  8. Climbing Up The Pidurangala Rock The Pidurangala Rock has a history that goes back two millennia. After King King Kashyapa made the Sigiriya Rock his seat of power, the Pidurangala Rock became their refuge on the king’s order.  Furthermore, it has a 1500-year-old Buddha Statue, and it is a protected ancient cave.  Moreover, from the Pidurangala Rock, you will get the best views of the Sigiriya Rock.  9. A Train Ride On The Nine Arch Bridge A train ride on the Nine Arch Bridge is the most iconic experience you can have in Sri Lanka. Also known as the Ella Odyssey, it has been praised by the BBC and Lonely Planet.  Built in 1921, this bridge is a prominent example of the Colonia-era architecture, and it does not have any metal in its construction.  10. Hiking To The Diyaluma Waterfall Hiking to the Diyaluma Waterfall from Poongala is one of the most popular hiking expeditions in Sri Lanka.  Once you reach the Upper Diyaluma Waterfall, you can relax and enjoy a swim in the infinity pools.  From the upper fall, you have to take a further trek of 30 minutes down to reach the Lower Diyaluma Waterfall.  Furthermore, the Diyaluma Waterfall is associated with the tragic love story of a King who fell in love with a lady from a lower caste.  Knowing about their love, the villagers chased them, and the lady fell into the waterfall and died.  11. Visiting The Dehiwala Zoo Since 1936, the Dehiwala Zoo in Sri Lanka has been a favorite spot for a thrilling wildlife experience.  Along with housing monkeys, elephants, fish, and birds, the zoo also has a dedicated section for reptiles.  Moreover, it has always been famous for the animal shows, and it has a Leopard Trail for guided night safari.  12. Spending A Day In Hurulu Eco Park The Hurulu Eco Park near Habarana is one of the best places in Sri Lanka to learn the art of slow traveling.  In the North Central Province of Sri Lanka, it is a great place for spotting elephants.  This dry evergreen is ideal for seeing elephants because it is the corridor between the Kaudulla National Park and the Minneriya National Park.  Take an afternoon safari to enjoy wildlife spotting and your time in nature.  13. Visiting Nuwara Eliya, The Coldest Place In Sri Lanka  Nuwara Eliya, the coldest place in Sri Lanka, is located at an altitude of 1,889 meters. Furthermore, it carries a nickname, “New England,” from the British Era.  Nuwara Eliya is a place of juxtapositions. There are Tudor-style homes, Victorian-style post offices, waterfalls, and jungles, showing the contrast in the landscape and cityscape.  Furthermore, it has natural attractions such as Gregory Lake, Victoria Park, and the Lovers Leap Waterfall.  Also, don’t forget to spend a day in Horton Plains National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.  14. Experiencing A Scenic Train Ride And More In Ella Though Ella has changed in the last 10 years due to rapid development, it has maintained the serene charm with its mountains, rail line, and lush greenery.  Furthermore, it is the place to share a seat with Sir Thomas Lipton and understand how tea runs as the lifeline of the nation.  Also, the Ravana Falls is the place where Ravana hid Sita after abducting her.  Other iconic things to do in Ella are visiting the Nine-Arch Bridge, enjoying a Kandy to Ella train ride, climbing the Ella Rock, watching sunset from the top of the Little Adam’s Peak, etc.  15. Exploring The Galle Fort  Galle is dreamy, and it looks like a movie frame in sepia tone.  However, the Galle Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is at the epicenter of this once impenetrable trading post.  Walk to the Galle Fort and explore this living museum of art, architecture, and history.  Also, watching the sunset from the Galle Fort is a magical experience.  More things to do in Galle include exploring the beaches beyond the fortress wall.  Also, don’t forget to enjoy a drink in a bar in the cobblestone streets of Galle.  Overall, Galle is a place that unfolds with time. The fortress, the streets, and the colonial buildings make history palpable in every nook of Galle.  In a way, it summarizes the true spirit of Sri Lanka. Visiting the country is not about ticking the bucket-list destinations.  It’s about understanding the culture and soaking in the local vibe.  16. Visiting The Hiriketiya Beach  Hiriketiya Beach is the latest addition to the tourism attractions in Sri Lanka. It is a favorite destination for backpackers and digital nomads.  Furthermore, it is a popular surfing beach with zones dedicated to surfers of different expertise levels.  Here, you can walk to the Blue Island, enjoy great food and beer at Smoke and Bitters, and learn how to cook with Rosie.

Where Is Midigama Beach? What Are Best Surfing Spots And Other Things To Do?

BY  Sibashree May 4, 2026

Once you cross the massive bay of Weligama, you will find many hidden beaches and coves on the south-western coast.  There is a stretch that goes through small inlets and has beautiful golden sands. These inlets with coconut palms are called Midigama collectively.  While Midigama will win your heart with its quaint beauty at first glance, it is more popular as a surfing spot for intermediates.  It is no less than a treasure hunt with unexplored reefs and secret waves.  Moreover, the surf spots of the Midigama Beach, such as Lazy Left or Ahangama, are diverse and unique in the experience they offer.  However, a local professional surfer confided that the Coconuts are the best surfing spot if you already have some skills.  Hi, are you planning a trip to Midigama Beach anytime soon? Read this blog to know about the location, surfing sports, and more about this beautiful beach.  Where Is Midigama Beach?  The cluster of beaches, known as the Midigama Beach, is between Weligama and Ahangama, a popular beach town and surfing spot.  Furthermore, the beach spans an area of 6 kilometers, including the clusters of inlets.  The best and most budget-friendly way to reach Midigama. It is a train ride of around 3 hours and 15 minutes, and the ticket cost me around Rs. 240.  I took the train from Colombo Fort at 6:15 PM and reached Midigama at 9:25 PM, and the ticket price was Rs 550 for the second class.  Where To Surf On Midigama Beach? I have already shared that the surfing spots in Midigama are diverse. So, the size, the type of breaks, and the surfing style will be different from one surfing location to another.   So, here are the surfing spots everyone loves.  1. Ahangama Ahangama, on the northwest of Midigama, has been a popular surfing hub for the last few years.  It has many surf camps and bars, and its reef breaks are excellent for beginners and mid-level surfers.  Kabalana Beach is the best place to start your surfing expedition here.  2. Ram’s Right  Ram’s Right is the toughest surf break in the region, and you really need to make a quick surfing start.  Furthermore, the barrel sections make it fascinating. Also, you really need to look out for sea urchins here.  3. The Combination Of Lazy Right And Lazy Left  These two offer secure reef brakes, and Lazy Left is slightly harder to surf than Lazy Right.  So, Lazy Right is more suitable for beginners. Here, a surfer can enjoy cruisy rides where the surf breaks over a deep reef.  4. Plantations  It is very close to Weligama, and it is an ideal surfing spot for intermediates.  The entry point is an opening in the rock by the Plantation Surf Inn.  Furthermore, the reef here is deep, and surfing usually continues in the right direction and a few lefts.  5. Coconuts  Coconuts is the place where you will enjoy the classic Sri Lankan reef surfing experience.  Here, you can surf right and left, and the breaks are on both ends of the beach.  However, the east end of the beach is choppier.  6. Weligama Once you are done surfing at Coconuts, you can take a short tuk-tuk ride to Weligama.  Furthermore, with a sandy bottom, it is an ideal surfing destination for beginners.  What Are The Places To Visit Near Midigama Beach?  If you are done surfing, you can explore the historic Galle Fort and the hedonistic Mirissa Beach.  1. Mirissa Beach Mirissa Beach turns into the most Hedonistic place in Sri Lanka in the evening.  The bars here offer amazing happy hour offers. So, you will find the cheapest chilled beer in Sri Lanka here.  2. Galle Fort Galle Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is just 25 km away from Midigama Beach.  It is one of the best examples of a European fortified city in South and South-East Asia.  Enjoy climbing up the rampart and having a walk from one corner to another, admire the architecture, and enjoy the 360-degree view of Galle.  Watching the sunset from the top of the fort is also a magical experience.  What Is The Best Time For Surfing In Midigama Beach?  Like all other beaches on the southern coast of Sri Lanka, November to April is the best time to visit Midigama Beach.  Regular storms and high rainfall are the main forces hitting the beach in this season.  Furthermore, when you are planning to surf in Midigama beach, pick early morning or late evening as the time as the winds pick up speed later in the day.  Where To Eat In Midigama Beach?  The main beach of Midigama and the place near the Coconuts have many cool eating places.  Contrary to Ahangama, the Midigama Beach exudes a hipster energy.  If you are looking for a local experience where you will also get some cultural insights, you can visit Sandaru Restaurant.  It is a family-run restaurant, and here you can eat kottu, rice, curry, and other local delicacies.  Another excellent place for trying local delicacies here is the Shirani Home Made Rice & Curry near the Coconut Beach.  Here, you will find the best rice-vegetable combos.  Where To Stay For Surfing At Midigama Beach?  You can stay at the really cool hostels near the Lazy Left if you want to surf at Midigama Beach.  However, if you are traveling with family and you are looking for comfort, Naomi Beach Hotel, the best surfing hotel in Sri Lanka, will be your ideal choice.  It has a stunning infinity pool, and the on-site bar is perfect for chilling after a surfing session.  Moreover, it is close to the Coconuts, for me, the best surfing spot in Midigama Beach.  Also, Surfing Wombats is another place to stay in Midigama for surfing. I can stay here simply because of the pizza they serve.  Furthermore, it is a short walk from the Lazy Left and Lazy Right surfing spots.  Also, if you want to be a part of the surfing camps in Midigama Beach, you must take a tuk-tuk to Weligama, and you will find many reputable surfing camps there.
