Jetavanaramaya: Standing Before The Tallest Brick Stupa In Anuradhapura

Jetavanaramaya is in the Sacred City of Anuradhapura, one of Sri Lanka’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

It is easily the most physically overwhelming structure I have seen anywhere on the island.

Can you believe that this stupa was built using 93.3 million baked mud bricks in 301 CE?

Even today, though the stupa is around half the height of the original stupa, it still impresses, with a towering height of 71 meters.

Furthermore, archaeologists think that a three-foot brick wall could be constructed between London and Edinburgh or New York City and Pittsburgh with these mud bricks.

However, Jetavanaramaya is not just about the imposing height.

It has a rich history and spiritual significance. Also, recent news has put it back in the global spotlight.

I will discuss all these aspects in this article, along with everything you need to plan the trip yourself.

A Recent Spotlight: Jetavanaramaya’s 2026 Global Moment

Jetavanaramaya: Standing Before The Tallest Brick Stupa In Anuradhapura

Jetavanaramaya does not need an introduction due to its architectural magnanimity or significance in Buddhism.

However, it has become a talking point once again with CNN Travel publishing a detailed feature recently.

In the February 2026 post, CNN Travel has described it as “massive megastructure built for eternity.”

Also, the same post places it alongside the Great Pyramids in terms of ancient engineering ambition.

The piece, reported from Anuradhapura itself, spent time with Godamune Pannaseeha, a senior archaeology officer who has spent years studying the site.

Also, it framed the stupa within the living pilgrimage culture that still surrounds it.

As I have seen it, there were pilgrims in white, monks chanting at dawn, rituals that have continued largely uninterrupted for more than 2,000 years.

The coverage was picked up widely across the US and international outlets in the weeks that followed.

Moreover, Sri Lankan media noted it as a rare moment of global attention for a site that, despite its scale, remains far less visited than Sigiriya Rock Fortress or the Temple of the Tooth.

If you are planning a Cultural Triangle trip in 2026, this is genuinely a good year to see it before the crowds catch up to the coverage.

The History Behind The Tallest Brick Stupa In The World

Jetavanaramaya: Standing Before The Tallest Brick Stupa In Anuradhapura

Jetavanaramaya is a physical record of a religious dispute.

Understanding why it exists makes the visit land differently, even if we forget about the height or scale for a while.

King Mahasena And The Sect Rivalry That Built It

King Mahasena began construction of this stupa between 273 and 301 CE.

It was during a period of real tension between two Buddhist sects, the Mahavihara and the more liberal Abhayagiri fraternity.

Mahasena was a patron of the Abhayagiri fraternity.

The stupa became the centrepiece of the Jetavana Vihara, a monastic complex built for the breakaway Sagalika sect.

It was designed, according to archaeologists, to accommodate more than 3,000 monks.

Every structure in the complex was oriented toward the stupa.

It was a daily, physical reminder of where devotion was meant to point.

The Relic Enshrined Inside

Jetavanaramaya is a solid stupa, not a hollow one.

So, you cannot go inside.

What’s believed to be enshrined at its core is a fragment of a sash or belt worn by the Buddha.

Thus, it is a cenotaph of deep religious significance rather than a burial monument in the ordinary sense.

Some accounts also connect the site to the cremation of Mahinda Thera, the monk credited with bringing Buddhism to Sri Lanka.

This version about the stupa comes from the excavated ash and charcoal layers found nearby.

Restoration Through The Centuries

Like most of Anuradhapura, Jetavanaramaya fell into decline after the capital shifted away from the city.

It was buried gradually by jungle growth and centuries of neglect.

King Parakramabahu I restored it in the 12th century, bringing it to roughly its current height.

Large-scale conservation further resumed in the 20th century, and it remains an active restoration site today.

Even in its diminished state, it is still the largest man-made brick structure by volume.

What It Is Really Like To Stand Before Jetavanaramaya

Jetavanaramaya: Standing Before The Tallest Brick Stupa In Anuradhapura

Honestly, photos do not give a fair idea about the scale of the stupa.

Standing at its base, this is what I actually felt.

The Scale You Don’t Expect

A height of 71 metres and made of 93 million bricks!

Reading about these numbers is different from actually walking the perimeter.

Each side of the base runs close to 576 feet, and the entrance staircases alone are around 28 feet wide.

It was a long walk circling the structure once.

However, the brick structure was more fascinating, with a distinct texture and color.

Furthermore, the uneven weathering of this deep terracotta structure is an art time has created.

No photograph truly captures that.

Golden Hour And The Rituals Around It

Afternoon is the best time to visit the stupa.

The heat is less, and the stupa looks warmer with a red-orange hue thanks to the light.

Also, this is the time when pilgrims in large numbers circumambulate the stupa clockwise.

They walk barefoot with flowers or lit oil lamps in their hands, and suddenly you see evening has set in.

Exploring The Jetavana Monastery Complex

Jetavanaramaya: Standing Before The Tallest Brick Stupa In Anuradhapura

The stupa is the epicenter of the monastery complex.

However, if you want to know more about the history and soak in the spiritual ambiance, explore the other structures mindfully.

The Jetavanaramaya Museum

This on-site museum is small, but it displays artefacts recovered during excavation.

I saw beads, coins, ivory carvings, pottery, and inscribed stone fragments, along with information panels on the sect rivalry that produced the stupa.

It takes around 30 minutes to explore the museum. However, it is a useful stop, considering the information it provides.

Nearby Ruins Worth Your Time

There are remains of monastic buildings, ponds and boundary walls around the stupa.

The refectory ruins and stone urinals with their surprisingly intricate carved drainage systems especially demand a mention.

These structures hint at an organised monastic life.

Entrance Fees And Tickets

Jetavanaramaya: Standing Before The Tallest Brick Stupa In Anuradhapura

Jetavanaramaya is covered by the single Anuradhapura Sacred City round ticket.

So, you do not need to buy a separate ticket for it.

Opening Hours And Best Time To Visit Jetavanaramaya

Jetavanaramaya: Standing Before The Tallest Brick Stupa In Anuradhapura

The archaeological sites are generally open daily from around 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM.

Avoid the midday window (roughly 12:00–3:00 PM), when the heat over the open brick platform gets genuinely uncomfortable.

Early morning and the last two hours before closing are both good choices.

The latter also lines up with the evening rituals.

Moreover, December to March is the most pleasant season weather-wise, with lower humidity and less rain.

Getting There

Anuradhapura is roughly 200 km north of Colombo.

The journey takes around 4.5 hours by car.

Also, it is about 65 km from Dambulla.

Moreover, in a Cultural Triangle itinerary, it pairs naturally with Sigiriya, Dambulla, and Mihintale.

Again, since the Sacred City is vast, you can rent a bicycle for the day to move around.

The bicycle rental costs around LKR 1500 for a day.

Furthermore, you can hire tuk-tuks and cars with a driver-guide.

A Suggested Half-Day Itinerary For Jetavanaramaya

Time Stop What to expect
7:00 AM Sri Maha Bodhi Dawn pilgrimage atmosphere at the sacred fig tree.
8:00 AM Ruwanwelisaya The gleaming white stupa and its elephant wall.
9:15 AM Jetavanaramaya Spend at least an hour, and more with the museum.
10:45 AM Jetavanaramaya Museum Excavated artefacts and site context.
11:30 AM Abhayagiri Dagoba The third great stupa, with a quieter, more forested setting.

Tips From My Visit To Jetavanaramaya

Jetavanaramaya: Standing Before The Tallest Brick Stupa In Anuradhapura
  • A local guide (arranged through your hotel or the ticket office) adds real value here. You cannot know much of the sect rivalry from the on-site signage.
  • You can take photos here. However, avoid posing with your back to the stupa or in disrespectful positions.

This is an active religious site for Buddhist pilgrims.

Beyond Jetavanaramaya: Continuing Your Anuradhapura Journey

Jetavanaramaya: Standing Before The Tallest Brick Stupa In Anuradhapura

Jetavanaramaya fits easily into an Anuradhapura itinerary, including Ruwanwelisaya and Mihintale

This cluster is the best way to get a full picture of the ancient capital.

Furthermore, you can continue south from here to other major Buddhist sites such as Mulkirigala and Kataragama.

Why Jetavanaramaya Still Matters

The significance of Jetavanaramaya is specific.

It is proof of Sri Lankan excellence in craftsmanship in the fourth century.

Even then, they could organize labor and materials and execute an ambition on a scale that rivalled any civilization of that era.

So, around 1700 years later, when you stand at the base of the stupa, it is like time travel.

Cost-Effective Limo Options For Chicago Airport Transfers

BY  Barsha Mar 4, 2026

Airport transfers in Chicago?  For many tourists,  finding a luxurious and cost-effective limo service can be an impossible quest.  You can be a business traveler, a leisure tourist, or just someone who wants to travel from the airport and reach a specific destination.  A reliable and cost-effective limo service can deliver real comfort, ease, and a touch of class without burning a hole in the pocket.  Hi, in today’s blog, I will talk about why cost-effective limo services are important when you are in a new city like Chicago.  I will also share some local tips for booking the cost-effective limo services and some of the best options in Chicago.  Why You Need A Cost-Effective Limo Service In Chicago?  You cannot think that limo rides are just for the proms or the big rides anymore! The cost-effective limo services are now blurring the line between affordability and luxury for tourists.  With the smart hacks, these limos can, in fact, be the most budget-friendly way to get to and from Chicago’s major airports.  These are especially beneficial for business travelers who are navigating busy meetings and events. When the transport becomes hassle-free, you can focus more on the preparation for the presentation and gathering yourself before a critical business meeting.  Here is more about why a cost-effective limo service is the ultimate choice for business travelers.  1. Comfort And Convenience You are feeling drained after a long flight, and then the Chicago traffic hits you hard. The last thing you want now is wrestling through the maps and hitting the wrong zones.  Limo crews pick up from your doorstep. They even adjust the timing of the pickup based on the change in the flight arrival.  Also, they know the shortcuts and updates related to local traffic.  In addition, Limo fleets have all the amenities. You will get cold water, Wi-Fi, comfortable seats, and complete privacy.  So, no sweat and stress! And a chance to utilize your travel time the way you want. You can relax and prepare for the meeting or event.  2. Affordable Group Travel If you are traveling in a group or have no qualms about sharing your ride with other people, you can opt for a group travel service.  You can divide the cost, and the expense is often the same as Uber or other local cabs. However, these services are more comfortable and dependable.  Overall, you enjoy the luxury of a Limo service but without the budget overshoot.  3. Reliable And Punctual Service During peak hours or peak tourist seasons, finding a rideshare can be a task. Also, you may have to negotiate a lot as they can ask for unreasonable fares.  However, with a Limo service, you will always get a ride on time.  These cabs will track the arrival of your flight and will reschedule the service if there are delays. You are already exhausted when your flight is delayed.  With a trusted and cost-effective limo service, you at least don’t need to panic over how you will make it to your hotel or meeting venue from the airport.  4. Fixed Pricing  Local taxis and cab booking apps will bombard you with surcharge prices in the peak hours or when the demands are high.  However, the cost-effective Limo services stick to flat rates.  You will have to make an upfront payment, and the charges and the budget will remain the same irrespective of the change of the schedule or route.  Thus, there will be little to no impact on your travel budget.  Affordable Limo Services In Chicago Here are some wallet-friendly picks for airport transfers to and from O’Hare International Airport (ORD) and Midway International Airport (MDW). 1. Shared Limo Services Shared rides pool passengers going your way, slashing costs big time. Yes, there will be a couple of extra stops, but you will get to share the cost.  2. Economy And Standard Sedans The economy sedans are snazzy and plush like full Limos. However, the price tag is almost half.  So, you can enjoy the luxury without burning a hole in your pocket.  3. Point-To-Point Limo Service You can avoid the high rates of hourly hires. You can book a Limo for a point-to-point fixed route fee.  These services are ideal if you are just going from the airport to the hotel without any detours. Many limo services provide online booking with straight-up prices and easy travel experiences.  4. Corporate And Frequent Traveler Discounts Many limo services offer discounts for frequent travelers or business clients. If you travel regularly for work, signing up for a loyalty program or corporate account can help you save money on each ride.  Companies often provide perks such as priority booking, complimentary upgrades, and discounted fares for repeat customers. 5. Off-Peak Discounts Booking a limo during non-peak hours can also reduce costs.  Prices tend to be lower during weekdays and non-rush hours, making it a great strategy for budget-conscious travelers.  If your flight schedule allows for flexible travel times, you can take advantage of these discounted rates and still enjoy the benefits of a premium limo experience. Tips For Booking An Affordable Limo In Chicago Limos can be bargains, but wanna lock in the steal? Here's the playbook, straight talk: 1. Book In Advance Procrastinate, and prices spike. Book early, grab discounts, nail low rates. Online systems spit instant quotes—savings for planning, you know? 2. Compare Prices Scan reviews for solid deals. Third-party sites flag honest crews with clear costs and top service. So, there is no guesswork. 3. Look For Promotions And Coupons Many limo companies offer online discounts, seasonal promotions, and first-time customer coupons.  Checking their website or signing up for email alerts can help you catch these deals.  Some companies also offer referral discounts, so if you recommend their service to others, you may receive future savings. 4. Consider Ride-Sharing With Family Or Friends Group trip? Chip in for a shared limo.  They've got SUVs, vans for the squad, cheaper per head than piling into Ubers. 5. Avoid Extra Fees Make sure to check for any hidden fees, such as fuel surcharges, gratuity, or extra stop charges.  Ask for a full price breakdown before confirming your booking.  Some companies may also charge for excessive wait times, so confirm their policies to avoid unexpected costs. Role Of 5-star Hotel Facilities: How A Five-Star Hospitality Facility Helps The World Of Business

BY  Barsha Aug 7, 2025

Partnering with a hospitality facility can boost your brand and business outcome, whether you are launching a new product, meeting investors, or organizing a retreat.  A five-star hotel can take on this role by delivering top-tier services, facilities, and environments to cater to both the functional and prestige needs of corporate clients.  That said, businesses still weigh the cost vs. value carefully when it comes to a Singapore 5 star hotel price range. But it is the experience, service, and outcome that can deliver real business value. Why Price Can Be A Deciding Factor Companies and corporations consider the price for multiple reasons while booking five-star accommodations. However, these reasons and factors always vary. People should understand the deciding factors behind choosing five-star facilities before understanding the role of 5-star hotel facilities in corporate accommodation and business.  1. Budget Constraints Not all companies can afford five-star rates on a regular basis. However, SMEs and startups find it difficult to keep up with the prices and rates of the 5-star accommodations. In fact, events, accommodations, and dining for multiple guests can easily go up. Therefore, the small companies often prefer the standard accommodations, which allow them to save a ton of money. This often allows people to accommodate more  2. ROI Consideration A lot of businesses would ask if the prestige and convenience can really justify the cost.  Perhaps they would think that a mid-range hotel that can offer similar services at a lower rate might just be a better choice. Businesses often think that decent, standard accommodations with decent pricing will provide more value to the people. Therefore, small businesses like startups find it difficult to understand the role of 5-star hotel facilities. 3. Volume Discounts Or Corporate Rates There are also many five-star hotels that offer special pricing for their regular business clients. Thus, long-term partnerships can really make luxury more affordable. 4. Value Perception Price may become less of an issue if a hotel can deliver exceptional service that can directly improve guest experience, deal success, or brand image.  How Corporate Clients Appreciate 5-Star Accommodation, And What Is The Role Of 5-Star Hotel Facilities The role of 5-star accommodation in corporate deals is immensely important. Businesses, therefore, always want to give their clients and employees the best they can afford. This, moreover, shows how much the organization cares about its partners or their employees. 1. Premium Business Facilities They can offer high-end conference rooms, boardrooms, and event spaces. They are also equipped with the latest AV tech, Wi-Fi, and IT support. Moreover, they have on-site staff to handle the logistics, security, and guest services. Therefore, the proper professional ambiance ensures better representation of the organization’s values. The facilities in terms of tech and IT ensure better pitching of ideas. Thus, better pitches allow for better conversion and convincing ideas. 2. Executive Accommodation There are luxury rooms and suites intended for VIP guests and executives. In addition, they offer 24/7 concierge, room service, and business amenities, as well as private check-in/check-out features for additional convenience. Therefore, these facilities show how much the business values its clients. Thus, this puts a positive impression on the minds of the clientele. On the other hand, companies often try to accommodate their valued employees in a 5-star hotel. This, therefore, shows that the companies value their employees. As a result, the role of 5-star hotel facilities in ensuring better results in corporate deals and corporate meetings is undeniable. 3. High-Level Client Hosting For meetings and negotiations, there are fine-dining restaurants and private lounges to handle them. You may also find bars and wine lounges to be ideal for less formal interactions. At the same time, clients will surely love the spa, golf, and leisure experiences. The clients do not always work while they are on a business trip. As a result, the other facilities, such as golf and other recreational activities, also benefit the people. The facilities provided by 5-star hotels allow the guests to relax in their leisure time apart from working. Several clients also do not want to compromise with their regular routines. Clients often have the habit of going to the gym and other facilities. Moreover, most of the five-star accommodation facilities have amenities such as gymnasiums and others. This allows the clients of the corporation to be at ease with their routine.  4. Brand Elevation Many businesses enquire about the Singapore 5 star hotel price range, Hence, they should consider the benefits they can get as hosting at a 5-star hotel can add status to your event or meeting.  In addition, it can reflect professionalism and attention to quality.  Overall, hospitality businesses help companies operate smoothly and leave lasting impressions, from hosting conferences and networking events to accommodating business travelers and entertaining clients. Businesses always look forward to impressing clients and want to run seamless business events soon.  Therefore, organizations should choose a five-star hotel that can blend luxury with functionality. Book your stay at the Fairmont Singapore and feel the perfect balance of work and comfort all in one exceptional venue.  You can give us a call to make your reservations, or subscribe to our mailing list.  Things To Consider Before Booking A Five-Star Facility For Corporate Events Five-star facilities provide individuals with an edge over others. The businesses should understand that regular Hotels with Wi-Fi and a geyser are not enough to leave a positive impression on the minds of the clients. People often find it shallow to think that the hotels and other facilities for accommodation should be valued more than the idea itself. However, investing in the amenities signifies the value for the business. The clients and the employees often have to use fast internet connections. The five-star hotels, therefore, provide proper internet connections to the guests. Therefore, the five-star facilities ensure that clients feel more valued. Five-Star hotels provide business center facilities like secretarial services, printing facilities, and several other facilities great for corporate travel. Therefore, these things combined play a major role in the businesses and the success of corporate travel. vbsfbscvb

Gorilla Trekking In Uganda A trip to East Africa is incomplete without experiencing gorilla trekking. June to October is an ideal span for the safari.  On the other hand, January and February are the most delightful months because, along with the highest congregation of wildlife near the water bodies, you also enjoy pleasant weather conditions.  The table below summarizes the best season for an East African safari and the season-wise top activities.  Best Seasons And Top Activities  Best Season for An East African Safari Reasons to Visit June to October (Dry Season)Sunny WeatherMaximum Outdoor ActivitiesEasy TravelHigh Congregation of Wildlife July to October Great for Safaris in the Masai Mara.Ideal for Watching the herds. Animals Cross the Rivers in Large Numbers. January to February (Calving Season)Ideal for Viewing Wildlife in the Southern Serengeti.Fewer Tourists Make it Ideal for Wildlife Spotting. April to May (Green Season)Lush GreeneryLow PriceFewer Crowds The Best Time For An East African Safari Tour Can Change Based On The Region Furthermore, remember that the best time for an East African Safari also depends on the region you want to focus on.  Temperature and weather shifts happen with the change of the region.  For example, Tanzania and Kenya are the best for exploring in January and February, as it is the calving season or June to October as it is the dry season.  On the other hand, if you want to enjoy a safari in Uganda or Rwanda and try gorilla trekking, June to September and December to February are the best times.  Dry weather conditions make these months ideal for trekking and trying other outdoor activities.  Also, if you want to experience the lush greenery of Eastern Africa, November to early December is the best time.  It is a shoulder season, and nature looks fresh after the spells of short rains.  And The East African Safari Tour Does Not End Here… Several other African countries offer amazing safari experiences, such as South Africa, Botswana, and Namibia.  However, you can see all of that in Kenya, Botswana, and Namibia by combining Uganda safari tours with South Africa and Tanzania safaris.  Depending on your availability and budget, one month is enough to cover the 3 mentioned African countries mentioned.  Most national parks favor family travelers with kids, except Bwindi and Kibale, which have an age limit of 15 years and above.
