While setting my Kandy itinerary, I thought Peradeniya Botanical Garden would take around two hours. However, I ended up staying four hours in the botanical garden. Still, I felt that I rushed through exploring the spice garden. The time it demands is not just because of its expansion. Every section of the park is worth stopping for.  In this article, I will give you a walkthrough of Peradeniya, along with the fees, timings, and route details I gathered along the way. Sources: Department of National Botanic Gardens The Royal History Behind The Gardens A walk around Peradeniya helped me realize how much of Kandyan royal history is tied up in this particular loop of the Mahaweli River. From Royal Pleasure Garden To Botanic Institution Before the British formalized it in 1821, the Peradeniya Botanical Garden was a royal pleasure garden. The Kandyan kings were the patrons of the site, and it was especially dear to the last queen of Kandy.  Six years after the fall of the Kandyan Kingdom to the British in 1815, the land was converted into a proper botanic garden. It was initially managed by Alexander Moon and centred on coffee and cinnamon cultivation before it grew into the far broader collection it is today. A Living Library Of Over 4,000 Species Today, the park has more than 4000 plant species. You will see palms, ferns, orchids, and shrubs from across the world. So, within the same park, you will walk from the spice garden to the giant bamboo grove. It is like a mix of different ecosystems along the riverbank.  What I Found Walking Through The Gardens Peradeniya spans across 147 acres. So, it is not possible to cover the entire area on a single visit.  So, pace yourself rather than making an attempt to see everything at once.  The Royal Palm Avenue This is the postcard shot everyone takes, and for good reason.  Rows of towering royal palms line a long, straight avenue, and the scale of it is more impressive in person than in any photo I had seen beforehand. The Spice Garden I lingered longest here.  Cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla, and other spices grow as actual plants rather than the packaged versions most visitors are used to. Also, having someone point out which bark strip becomes the cinnamon on a supermarket shelf made the whole spice trade history of the island feel a lot more concrete. The Orchid House The Orchid House displays Cattleya, Dendrobium, Arachnis, Oncidium, Phalaenopsis, and Vanda varieties and their hybrids, including specimens of Tiger Orchid, the largest orchid species in the world.  I would budget more time here than you think you need. It is easy to walk through in ten minutes, but worth thirty. The Giant Javan Fig Tree And Giant Bamboo These are two of the garden's most photographed non-flowering specimens. There is a sprawling Javan fig with a canopy wide enough to shade a small crowd. Also, the bamboo grove with stalks reaching over 30 metres. ] Both feel less like garden features and more like landmarks in their own right. The River Loop And Great Lawn The Mahaweli River wraps around most of the property. The paths along that loop are noticeably quieter than the main avenues. If you want a break from the crowds near the entrance, this is where to find it. Peradeniya sits less than 5.5 kilometres from central Kandy on the Colombo road, which makes it one of the easiest half-day trips out of the city. Take a short tuk-tuk or taxi ride, or a public bus running the Kandy–Peradeniya route.  Several local operators also combine it with a Kandy city tour, pairing the garden with the Temple of the Tooth and viewpoints around town in a single outing. Best Time To Visit Unlike Hakgala Flower Garden, Peradeniya's lower elevation and river-loop setting mean it is a comfortable visit almost year-round. However, a few things are worth timing around. Early morning (7:30–10:00 am) for cooler temperatures and quieter paths. The dry inter-monsoon months for the most reliable weather, since Kandy still sees regular rainfall through much of the year. Weekdays over weekends, since school groups and local families tend to fill the garden on weekends and public holidays. Tips From My Visit To The Peradeniya Botanical Garden Wear comfortable shoes. The paths are flat and wheelchair-friendly, but the total distance covered adds up quickly across 147 acres. Electric buggies and golf carts are available for rent. The 4-seater electric cars cost LKR 1000 per hour, and the 8-seater vehicles cost LKR 2000 per hour.  Carry water and sun protection. Despite the tree cover in places, long stretches of the main avenues are fully exposed. For photography, the light along the Royal Palm Avenue is best in the first hour after opening. Nearby Places To Combine With Peradeniya Botanical Garden Because it sits so close to Kandy, Peradeniya rarely needs to be its own dedicated day trip. The Temple of the Tooth Relic and central Kandy are easy extensions to a trip to this botanical garden.  Also, don’t forget the University of Peradeniya campus, which borders the gardens. Hiriketiya Beach is a place that can disrupt your travel plans completely.  You may arrive with plans for a two-night stay and end up spending 3 weeks. Develop a routine of mornings spent surfing, drinking coconut coffee, and watching the sun set over the jungle.  This tucked-away cove on Sri Lanka’s southern coast is nicknamed by its community of surfers and digital nomads as "Hiri." It is a textbook example of tropical aesthetics.  The cove is well-formed. It has water surrounded by palm trees, and a jungle. The jungle is so dense behind it that you will hear monkeys scurrying through the treetops of your surfboard as they find their way there.  Hiri feels like a secret to be shared, but is just being revealed to people in the surrounding towns of Weligama and Mirissa.  Hiriketiya has developed to become a more sophisticated version of Weligama and Mirissa. The "vibe" of Hiriketiya is not just another phrase used by hipsters. It is the currency used by locals. How To Reach It?  Hiriketiya is located off the main highway along the coast, about one mile away from the town of Dickwella.  Since Hiriketiya is not on a major transit route, you will have to use Dickwella as your transit point. 1. Traveling To Hiriketiya Beach From Colombo The best way to get there is by taking the train from Colombo Fort to Matara, which takes approximately four hours.  From Matara, you can take a local bus to Dickwella or take a tuk-tuk taxi. You can also take a highway express bus from Colombo to Matara and arrive in about three hours. 2. Traveling To Hiriketiya Beach From Ella You can catch the #31 bus at the intersection of the Ella-Passara Road as you travel through tea country.  It is approximately four hours to the coast on a winding road. Just tell the conductor you want to go to Dickwella. 3. Traveling To Hiriketiya Beach From Arugam Bay If you are traveling from the East Coast surf to the surf in the South, there is a direct bus leaving from Pottuvil every day around 6:30 AM. So, here are the things to do beyond surfing.  1. Walk To Blue Beach Island If you're looking for a little adventure, try the 2.5km (1.5-mile) walk to Nilwella.  You'll be walking through peaceful local neighborhoods when you find a beautiful natural sandbar that links the mainland with a small island.  Moreover, walking over a sandbar with breaking waves on both sides of you is something you will remember long after leaving Hiri.  Also, it is the best place to watch the sunset. 2. When I reached the Haggala Flower Garden, the mist was sitting close to the rose beds.  It is the cool air of Nuwara Eliya that makes the roses bloom and creates a different ambiance than the Central Lowlands.  I had already spent two days wandering tea estates and colonial-era streets in the town. However, this garden ended up being the one stop I keep bringing up when people ask what surprised me most about the hill country. In this article, I will share what I saw and did at Haggala or Hakgala. From Cinchona Plantation To Rose Garden The garden was established in 1861 by the British. It was originally an experimental station for cinchona, the tree whose bark produces quinine, the anti-malarial drug that was essential to colonial plantation life at the time.  The focus later shifted to tea before the site was eventually converted into the ornamental botanical garden that draws visitors today.  Standing among the rose terraces, it is genuinely hard to picture rows of cinchona trees where the flowerbeds now are. The Ramayana Connection The other layer to Hakgala's history is mythological rather than colonial.  The garden has a special connection to the Ramayana, describing it as part of the pleasure gardens associated with the demon king Ravana. There is another popular version of the legend. It is the spot where Hanuman is said to have brought the Sanjeevani herb to revive Lakshmana.  I have not verified the folklore, but every local guide shares it with conviction.  What I Found Walking Through The Gardens It was the most unhurried two hours in Sri Lanka at the Haggala Botanical Garden.  These are the highlights of exploring the botanical garden.  The Rose Garden This is the section most people come for, and it is the one that stayed with me.  Terraced rose beds climb a gentle slope, and even on a visit outside peak bloom I found enough color to justify the walk up.  Locals I spoke to said mid-March through April is when the roses are genuinely at their best. The Fernery And Orchid House Past the roses, the path drops into shadier, damper terrain. It is the fernery, thick with hanging vines and the kind of quiet you only get under a heavy tree canopy.  The orchid displays nearby were smaller than what I later saw at Peradeniya, but the cooler climate here seems to suit certain varieties that don't do as well lower down. Hakgala Rock And The Nature Reserve The garden sits right at the base of Hakgala Rock, part of the wider Hakgala Nature Reserve.  I did not have time to explore the reserve itself on this trip. However, the rock face looming over the garden is a constant, dramatic backdrop while you're walking around. It is worth pausing for a photo even if you are not planning to hike further. Bring a light jacket even in the middle of the day. Nuwara Eliya's hill-country chill is real, and Hakgala sits even higher than the town itself. Rain can roll in quickly at this elevation. A few visitor accounts mention exploring in light rain and still finding it worthwhile, which matched my own experience with a brief afternoon shower. Set aside two to three hours if you want to walk the full garden rather than just the rose terraces. Nearby Places To Combine With Hakgala Hakgala rarely needs to be a standalone trip.  On the same day, I paired it with a walk through central Nuwara Eliya, and it would slot just as easily into a longer hill-country itinerary. Nuwara Eliya town and its colonial-era buildings Pedro Tea Factory Horton Plains National Park and World's End. You can also explore the wider Knuckles or hill-country circuit if you have more days to spare. Haggala Flower Garden Offers A Slow And Delightful Experience Haggala is not a dramatic, headline attraction the way Sigiriya or Adam's Peak is. It is a slow, cool, quietly beautiful stop and the kind of place that rewards an unhurried morning rather than a checklist visit.  If you are already spending time in Nuwara Eliya for the tea country scenery, I would treat Hakgala as close to essential.
