Adam’s Peak (Sri Pada): Climbing Sri Lanka’s Sacred Mountain

It was two in the morning, and I started climbing Adam’s Peak. I was in a line of pilgrims, and the line stretched as far as I could see with my torchlight.

All the guides about climbing up this sacred mountain tell you about climbing the 5500 steps. However, nothing prepares you for the experience you will have in conquering them in pitch darkness.

Furthermore, the crowd itself was a reflection of how inclusive Sri Lanka is in its religious practice. It was a gathering of people from four different religious beliefs.

The reasons for everyone’s climb were not the same. However, that did not quite clash with each other.

That is the beauty of the Indian Subcontinent, and Sri Lanka sets an example each time I visit it.

Nevertheless, in this guide, I will talk about my experience of reaching the summit of Adam’s Peak and all the details you need to know.

What Makes Adam’s Peak Sacred

Adam’s Peak (Sri Pada): Climbing Sri Lanka’s Sacred Mountain

Mount Pedro is the tallest mountain in Sri Lanka. However, Adam’s Peak has the highest spiritual significance.

The local name for the peak, Sri Pada, or “Sacred Footprint,” itself sets your expectations high.

Rising 2243 meters in the Central Highlands of Sri Lanka, Adam’s Peak has a rock formation at the summit resembling a large footprint, which is claimed by four separate religions.

The Mystery Of The Footprint At The Adam’s Peak Summit

The Buddhists believe that the sacred footprint at the summit is of Lord Buddha. On the other hand, Hindus believe that the footprint is of Lord Shiva.

Some Christians think the footprint is of Adam. He set his first footprint here after falling from the Garden of Eden.

Muslims also believe Adam, the first prophet in their religion, has left this footprint.

Furthermore, there is a different Christian belief that the footprint belongs to St. Thomas.

Again, the locals call it the “Mountain of Saman,” as they think the mountain is associated with Saman, a significant figure of worship in local traditions.

Irrespective of the religious significance of Adam’s Peak, pilgrimage to the summit has continued for over a thousand years.

A Brief History Of The Pilgrimage

Some of the earliest recorded efforts to conquer Adam’s Peak go back to the reign of King Vijayabahu I in the eleventh century.

He built wayside rest houses along the route.

Later, various rulers expanded the mountaintop shrine, built roads, and installed the iron chains that still assist climbers on the steepest sections near the summit.

Another fascinating local belief is that the chains in the steep sections of the route belonged to Alexander the Great.

Also, you will find a mention of Adam’s Peak in the writings of the Chinese traveler Ma Huan. He described Adam’s Peak as a place rich with precious stones.

Along with the religious significance, the richness of gems is another reason why this peak has drawn visitors from far beyond Sri Lanka.

Where Is Adam’s Peak Located?

https://maps.app.goo.gl/CZeW7kGZ8rTZG2Xc8

The sacred mountain is in the southwestern part of the Central Range in Sri Lanka. It is at a distance of around 40 km from Ratnapura.

However, the more popular trekking route is through Hatton, which is just at a distance of 32 km.

The landscape surrounding the mountain is delightful and quintessential of the Sri Lankan Central Highlands. You will see tea plantations and rainforest.

Moreover, Dalhousie, or Nallathanniya, is the village at the base of this mountain. Most trekkers start their journey from this village itself.

It is an easy base to reach from Hatton, Maskeliya, or Ratnapura, depending on which direction you’re coming from.

Getting To The Trailhead

Hatton is the main transport hub for this side of the mountain.

It is well connected by train on Sri Lanka’s scenic hill-country line as well as by bus from Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, and Colombo.

From Hatton, local buses and shared taxis run the remaining stretch to Nallathanniya.

During peak pilgrimage season, you will get extra buses heading to the base.

If you are driving yourself, the roads narrow considerably in the final approach to Dalhousie, and parking fills up quickly on weekends and full moon nights.

Choosing Your Route To Adam’s Peak

Adam’s Peak (Sri Pada): Climbing Sri Lanka’s Sacred Mountain

Just as pilgrims of four different religions want to conquer Adam’s Peak, there are six trails that lead to Adam’s Peak.

However, as I have mentioned, the Hatton route via Nallathanniya is popular with travelers. It is also the easiest.

The route is around 5 km one-way, and the staircase on this route is well-maintained for a safe ascent.

The Kuruwita-Erathna, Ihala-Maliboda, and Ratnapura routes are longer, less developed, and used mainly by more experienced or locally guided hikers rather than casual visitors.

The Night Climb

Most pilgrims start the climb to the summit at around 2 to 3 AM. This reminded me of the walk and the queue for visiting the Tirupati Balaji Temple and Aruanchalam Temple in India, as both of these are located at hilltops.

Nevertheless, with the ascent starting at 2 AM to 3 AM, you can reach the summit before sunrise at around 6 to 6:15 AM.

Depending on your fitness level and the number of stops you are taking at the tea shops along the way, the total duration to complete the ascent will change.

Also, very few people talk about the descent, which is actually way harder, and my knees had a hard time.

The reward of all this hardwork is the sacred “Shadow of Sri Pada” on a clear morning.

Difficulty And Fitness Considerations

The climb to Adam’s Peak is moderate to hard. There is no technical scrambling.

However, the stone stairs are relentless, and they test different muscles than a usual hiking trail. So, basic fitness is important, and only reasonably fit adults can complete the ascent in three to four hours.

Having said that, mental endurance is most important here.

I passed pilgrims well into their seventies moving slower but steadily upward alongside groups of teenagers.

The descent deserves just as much respect as the climb. The repetitive downward impact on knees and quads catches many first-timers off guard, and rushing it is a common way to end up sore for days afterward.

What Is The Best Time To Climb Adam’s Peak

Adam’s Peak (Sri Pada): Climbing Sri Lanka’s Sacred Mountain

From the Unduwap Poya (full moon) in December to the Vesak Poya in May is the official pilgrimage season for climbing Adam’s Peak.

It is the dry season in Sri Lanka.

The entire route gets decked up during this season. The strings of lights, the tea stalls, and rest huts open all night make the ambience festive.

However, if you want to avoid the crowd, you can plan a climb between June and November.

Skip the monsoon months and slippery stone steps.

Crowds And Timing Within The Season

If you want to join the pilgrims in the peak season, you must avoid the following days.

  • Full Moon Days
  • Weekends
  • The Week Around the Sinhala New Year in Mid-April.

Also, the months of January and February remain the busiest.

So, if you are planning a quieter climb in the festive season, aim for a weekday in early December or late April instead.

What To Pack And Expect

Comfortable, broken-in walking shoes matter more here than technical hiking gear, since the trail has no scrambling but plenty of relentless stairs.

Nights on the mountain get cold, particularly in December and January.

So, a warm layer is worth the extra weight in your bag.

The entry is free, though donations are welcomed at the temple near the base.

Moreover, you must carry cash for tea, snacks, and simple meals from the stalls lining the route during the season.

Nearby Places To Combine With Your Visit

Adam’s Peak (Sri Pada): Climbing Sri Lanka’s Sacred Mountain

Hatton and the surrounding tea country make a natural base before or after the climb.

You can combine Adam’s Peak with a trip through Nuwara Eliya or onward toward Ella via Sri Lanka’s scenic hill-country rail line.

If you have a rest day built in, the tea estates around Maskeliya and Dalhousie are worth exploring at a slower pace once your legs have recovered from the descent.

Guides And Group Climbs To Adam’s Peak

Hiring a guide is not necessary on the main Hatton route, since the path is obvious and well-populated during the season.

However, having a guide can add real value for first-time climbers who want context on the mountain’s history and the shrines passed along the way.

Many guesthouses in Nallathanniya and Hatton can arrange a local guide on short notice.

Also, joining a small group climb is a good option for solo travelers who would rather not do the pre-dawn ascent entirely alone.

These Are The 10 Top Restaurants In Macau Out Of The 25 Restaurants I Visited

BY  Sibashree Jun 22, 2026

Macau is a small East Asian City. It is on the west of Hong Kong and on the south coast of China.  Macau is 64 kms away from Hong Kong, and it has the City of Zhuhai in Mainland China to the north. Then, the Pearl River Delta is to the south and east.  It was a Portuguese colony once, but now it is an autonomous territory. Also, even today, Macau shows an influence of ancient Chinese culture.  However, this ancient Chinese culture has created a fusion with new-age European influence. The cuisine of Macau explains it the best, and that’s why you need to visit the best restaurants in Macau.  You will especially experience a blend of Cantonese and Portuguese flavors.  What Are The Top 10 Restaurants In Macau?  Macau has many top restaurants to eat at. Along with the starred restaurants, there are also bakeries, taverns, street food corners, and age-old tea houses.  Furthermore, freshly baked almond cookies, egg tarts, and slices of beef and pork jerky are some of the best delicacies to try in these restaurants.  Also, thanks to the culinary legacy of over 400 years, there is a global interest in the Macanese cuisine.  Moreover, Irina Bokova, the Director-General of UNESCO, has designated Macau as the UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy.  Nevertheless, visiting all the restaurants in the city is not possible logistically. So, I have 25 places and picked 10 among them.  I have further divided the top 10 Macau restaurants into two categories: luxury restaurants and budget-friendly restaurants.   It’s time to celebrate Macanese history and the eclectic culture of the city.  Top Luxury Restaurants In Macau  As I have mentioned, Macau is a global gastronomic destination, and it is home to names such as The Ritz–Carlton Cafe, which is a Michelin Guide restaurant.  So, let’s find out the top names on our list of the luxury restaurants in Macau, along with The Ritz–Carlton Cafe.  However, before I give brief details about the restaurants with you, I want to share a table or a quick summary comparing the names I have chosen.  A Quick Summary  Best Luxury Restaurants in MacauCuisine Type and SpecialtyAverage Price Range Per Person (₹)Ideal Dining OccasionLocationThe Ritz-Carlton CaféFrench Brasserie and Classic Desserts2,500 – 15,000- Romantic Dates- Group Dinners- Family DiningGround Floor, The Ritz-Carlton Macau, Estrada da Baía de Nossa Senhora da Esperança, CotaiThe Manor (St. Regis)Seafood, Oysters, and Robata Grilled Meats2,500 – 15,000- Romantic Dinner - Dates- Trying Local Cuisine - Family Dinners1st Floor, The St. Regis Macao, The Londoner Macao, Estrada do Istmo, CotaiLai HeenMichelin-Starred Haute Cantonese and Vegan Options2,500 – 13,000- Private Dining- Intimate Family Gatherings51st Floor, The Ritz-Carlton Macau, Estrada da Baía de Nossa Senhora da Esperança, CotaiVida Rica (Mandarin Oriental)Classic Cuisine with Modern Twist and Cheese Wheel Risotto2000+- Panoramic Waterfront Views- Bar Scene- Romantic DiningMandarin Oriental Macau, 945 Avenida Dr. Sun Yat-Sen, NAPE, Macau PeninsulaBelon Restaurant (Banyan Tree)Marine-Themed International Seafood and Dry-Aged Ribeye6000+- Sunday Champagne Brunches- Kids Lunch- Romantic Events31st Floor, Banyan Tree Macau, Galaxy Macau Resort, Estrada da Baía de Nossa Senhora da Esperança, Cotai 1. Also, it is a fusion of sophisticated decor and flavorful food that stands out because of its simplicity.  Furthermore, based on the group size, you can choose between its two and four-seater intimate seating arrangements.  Also, it offers a wonderful view of the shopping area.  2. The St. Regis Macao I had the finest oysters in Macau at The Manor. This signature grill restaurant and oyster bar of St. Regis Macao also serves prime cut meats.  Furthermore, its wine list is exquisite, and it is one of the topmost restaurants in Macau to follow the unique Robata technique for grilling.  In the Robata technique, Northern Japan’s “white oak Bincho-tan” is used for the perfect grilling of the meat.  As a result, the meat gets a charred texture on the outside, and it remains moist in the center. The subtle smoky aroma makes it all the more appetizing.  You can also try Portuguese chouriço and squid ink here, and Instagram celebrates its cross-cultural plates, such as the Glacier 51 Toothfish.  3. Lai Heen Lai Heen is a Michelin-starred restaurant in Macau and one of the best in the city for vegetarian food.  The atmosphere of the restaurant is sophisticated, and a lot of experimentation with haute Chinese cooking happens here.  Furthermore, the Chef's Creations served here are innovative, and they celebrate the modern spirit of the city.  Along with vegetarian cuisines, it also has custom-made vegan options such as “Asparagus Barley Risotto with Morel Mushrooms.” So, if you are a vegetarian and looking for an Indian restaurant in Macau, you can choose Lai Heen.  However, please mention your vegan preferences to them well in advance before visiting the restaurant.  4. Vida Rica, Mandarin Oriental I visited Vida Rica to try delicious cakes and an assortment of cocktails. However, as soon as I stepped inside, I was bowled over by the amazing glass wall.  It offered a brilliant view of the Nam Van Lake and the South China Sea.  Furthermore, the seating arrangement of the restaurant was unique. Every guest could see how the executive chefs interpret the classic cuisine.  I loved the red curry prawn bisque there, and they make brilliant risotto.  5. Belon Restaurant: Banyan Tree Belon Restaurant has a marine theme, and it felt like dining under the ocean. You will notice the inspiration of the marine life even in the dishes such as smoked scallop.  Along with being one of the top dining restaurants in Macau, it is also a popular spot for a Sunday Brunch.  It got its name from the famous flat oysters from France, Belon. Furthermore, Hong Kong Tatler designated it as one of the best restaurants in Macau in 2017.  What Are The Most Affordable Restaurants In Macau?  Budget-friendly dining in Macau is not limited to the local eateries or Cha Chaan Tengs. Also, it has a “Galatian-inspired” setting that makes the ambiance vibrant and cozy.  8. Cafe Deco Restaurant: The Venetian Cafe Deco Restaurant is one of the most affordable Chinese restaurants in Macau.  However, along with traditional Chinese food, it also serves local Macanese cuisine and International delicacies made with fresh seafood.  Also, boasting a soothing and classy setting, the restaurant serves a full-course buffet including soups, appetizers, fresh seafood, salads, and desserts.  9. Le Buffet At Le Buffet, I saw the chefs making the European delicacies at live counters.  While it is very European in the cuisine served, the decor is Persian with muted colors and grilled walls.  Furthermore, the desserts at Le Buffet deserve special mention, and the mini Eiffel Tower dessert tower is the most creative among them.  Some More Information You Need To Know About The Top Restaurants In Macau  If you are looking for Indian restaurants in Macau, you can explore options such as Macau City, Indian Spice, and The Golden Peacock.  Furthermore, if you are searching for authentic Italian restaurants, you must try options such as La Cucina Italiana, Portofino, Bene, and Don Alfonso 1890.  Also, if you want to have vegetarian food, consider places such as Vida Rica Restaurant, Blissful Carrot, and Lai Heen.  Celebrating The Fusion Of Local And Global Cuisines  The top restaurants in Macau celebrate the words of George Bernard Shaw, “There is no love sincerer than the love for food.” Also, what makes the gastronomic experience in Macau special is the eclectic influence and the rich history of over 400 years.  So, let’s indulge in great food in Macau. Why Is Bentota Beach, Sri Lanka, Famous? Know About Bentota Beach, River Safari, And More

BY  Sibashree Jul 7, 2026

With the One Love Reggae Festival returning to Bentota Beach, Sri Lanka is now preparing to be a vibrant cultural stage for music lovers from around the world.  The event is slated from 7th to 9th August, and with a laid-back coastal atmosphere, will function as a major tourism catalyst for Bentota.  Nevertheless, Bentota Beach has always been a popular, idyllic destination in Sri Lanka due to the calm waves of the Indian Ocean and soft golden sands.  Furthermore, it is a gateway to the Sinharaja Forest Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and another UNESCO World Heritage Site, Galle Fort.  However, for me, the most striking thing about Bentota was the safari on the Bentota Ganga. With dramatic landscapes and surrealism awaiting you in every nook, this was one of the highlights of my trip to Sri Lanka.  Also, very close to Colombo, just a 2-hour drive away, this beach stands out even if tourists show more interest in popular variations such as Tangalle Beach and Mirissa Beach.  Here is more about why Bentota Beach is worth visiting and what the top attractions are.  What Are The Things To Do In Bentota?  The heavenly sunset views of Bentota Beach, the most anticipated boat safari on Bentota Ganga, and a relaxing experience in the Ayurveda Herbal and Spice Garden! Furthermore, if you want an adrenaline rush, you can take part in activities such as parasailing, banana boating, jet skiing, and more! 1. Water Sports At Bentota Beach Bentota has many beaches, such as the Ventura Beach or the Moragalla Beach, where the ocean meets the Bentota Ganga River.  However, together, they are known as the Bentota Beach, and together they look like a long stretch of fine white sand.  A specific stretch of sand is parallel to Bentota Lagoon, which is more commonly called the Bentota Ganga.  It is known as the Paradise Island, looking like a narrow and long peninsula stretching out into the ocean.  Also, it is ideal for the following watersports.  Windsurfing Waterskiing Diving Canoeing Snorkeling Fishing Moreover, centers such as Diyakawa Water Sports and Sunshine Water Sports Center help with the best gear, training, and guidance.  2. Visiting The Kosgoda Sea Turtle Conservation Project I mentioned the Kosgoda Sea Turtle Conservation Project when visiting Kalutara.  However, it is way closer to Bentota, and it is situated at a distance of just 9 km. So, it is just a road journey of 9 km or 15 minutes south by road.  It remains open from 8:30 AM to 6:30 PM, and the ticket price is LKR 500 for locals and LKR 1000 for foreigners.  It is a vital wildlife sanctuary on the southwestern coast of Sri Lanka. Established in 1981, it aims to protect endangered sea turtles from extinction caused by poaching and habitat loss. The hatchery monitors local beaches to rescue vulnerable eggs.  It buries them safely in protected sand nests until they hatch. Impressively, the project cares for all five sea turtle species that visit Sri Lanka. The Green Turtles Loggerhead Turtles Hawksbill Turtles Olive Ridley Turtles Leatherback Turtles.  The sanctuary also rehabilitates turtles injured by fishing nets. However, for me, the most exciting experience in the sanctuary was releasing newborn hatchlings into the Indian Ocean at sunset.  This hands-on experience funds the project while raising global awareness about marine conservation. Overall, it was a great experience learning about the marine ecosystem and how these adorable marine creatures play an important role in maintaining the balance.  If you want to watch and study them further, Sri Lanka has many other destinations such as the Dalawella Beach, Dickwella Beach, and Mount Lavinia Beach.  3. The River Safari On Bentota Ganga  While many people are more excited about the watersports, I visited Bentota for the water safari.  It was late afternoon, and the Sun was getting mellower. Fortunately, the hotel I was staying in had the provision for booking a boat safari.  The boat progressed through the jungle. Also, I could spot eagles flying high and some snakes in the water.  I was looking for crocodiles, but this time, I did not find one.  Moreover, the roots of the trees got entangled, and the roots created some eerie formations that looked straight out of Apocalypse.  Having said that, the river safari was not just an opportunity to spot the wildlife. I also saw the traditional fishing techniques and prawn farming in the wetlands surrounded by mangrove forests.  Another interesting stop was the Cinnamon Island. I spotted old and young men cutting sleek sticks of cinnamon. I bought a few bottles of cinnamon oil from them.  It was a 1.5-hour safari, and it cost around LKR 2500.  4. Exploring The Bentota Market  The Aluthgama town is around 3 km away from Bentota, and the Monday market here is amazing.  I had a talk with Manjula, a college student and a local vendor who helps her mother, Hiruni.  “People from different parts of the southwest coast come here. This is a market mostly dominated by women. So, I love being a part of the market.  The vendors sell various products, including clothes, vegetables, groceries, and other knick-nacks.  I also found the place to be a great spot for socializing. Women were interacting with each other when buying exotic fruits and fresh vegetables.  Moreover, I collected some cinnamon sticks, spices, and clothes as souvenirs.  5. Enjoying The Benefit Of Herbal And Spice Treatment  Bentota is famous for traditional Ayurveda and health treatment. The oils and massage solutions here have spices and local herbs.  The medicines and solutions also have cardamom, cinnamon, seeds, fruits, bark, and leaves.  So, if you want to enjoy the ultimate Sri Lankan spa experience, Bentota is the ideal place.  The big hotels and resorts have spas offering traditional treatments and therapies. Furthermore, there are some specialized Ayurveda centers.  Where To Stay In Bentota Beach?  From budget guesthouse Hotel Hemadan to 5-star hotel Taj Bentota Resort, the accommodation options in Bentota are diverse.  Furthermore, if you want an artistic and boutique experience, you can choose options such as Taj Bentota Resort and NH Bentota Ceysands.  Based on the accommodation you choose, the cost of staying in Bentota will be between LKR 13000 and 60000 per night.

What Is Oshino Hakkai Famous For? How To Visit It And More

BY  Sibashree Mar 31, 2026

Everyone knows that you cannot complete exploring Japan in a day. And I had no choice but to miss Oshino Hakkai on the first trip.  However, on the next trip, I made sure to plan a visit.  Of course, an image on Instagram was my major drive behind being so passionate about a trip to Oshino Hakkai.  I saw a series of houses with thatched roofs along the shore of a pond. The magnificent and snow-covered Mount Fuji stood behind, strong and unshakable, as the eternal truth.  Born and raised in the land of spirituality and the Himalayas, I had to visit Oshino Hakkai.  However, as I have explained in my narrative from Tokyo to Mount Fuji day trip, you have to time your trip really well and have to be extremely lucky to see the snow-capped Mount Fuji.  Also, if you are planning a trip in summer, you will only get to see Mount Fuji partially or fully covered by clouds.  Nevertheless, as Mount Fuji continues to act elusive, here is why Oshino Hakkai will win your heart.  Oshino Hakkai: Why Is Visiting The Eight Springs Of Oshino So Special?  As I stood at the center of where both Lake Kawaguchiko and Lake Yamanakako meet in the small village of Oshino, I was able to look at the eight sacred ponds of Oshino Hakkai.  These sparkling, clear water springs are all that is left from a long-lost sixth lake that existed hundreds of years ago. It's as if time stood still when you visit these sacred areas. When I looked into the water, I didn't see just water, and I saw history. The springs were used by pilgrims (Fuji-ko) during Japan's Edo period to cleanse their bodies and souls before climbing Mt. Fuji. What a magical process the water goes through!  From snow accumulation on the summit of Mt. Rainier, through melting and filtration through approximately 80 years' worth of porous lava before it actually emerges at this location, its absolute perfection.  Moreover, it was crystal clear and pure.  Also, as I walked through the "Natural Monuments," I had an intense feeling of appreciation for the many years of waiting, so that each would have such serenity. How To Reach Oshino Hakkai? The journey to the stunning waters of Oshino Hakkai is as much a part of the experience as the location itself.  Here’s my recommendation for how to get to Oshino Hakkai, depending on whether you want a more convenient (train) or an adventurous (rental car) way of doing so. 1. Reaching Oshino Hakkai From Tokyo When travelling from Tokyo, you have several options available.  Highway bus lines go to Oshino Hakkai directly.  If you plan to take the train, either Fujisan Station (the nearest station) or Kawaguchiko on the Fuji Kyuko Line is your best option.  Once at Fujisan or Kawaguchiko, catch a local bus to get to the village. You may take the Fujikko-go (tourist buses), Mt. Fuji World Heritage Loop, or Uchino or Hirano routes via local bus from Fujisan Station.  Generally, there are 1-2 buses/hour on these routes. At Kawaguchiko Station, there are 11 Fuji-Q buses each day that leave for Lake Yamanaka Oriental side, and the 11 Fuji-Q buses that leave for Gotemba and also the Oshino springs. Just watch out for the Oshino Hakkai or Oshino Hakkai-Iriguchi as their stops. 2. Driving And Village Logistics I rented a car, and it is the most convenient way to visit the nearby Five Lakes region.  Parking here is convenient, and there are many public and private parking spaces.  After parking the car, you can explore the nearby villages.  However, you will need 300 JPY to enter the Hannoki Bayashi Shiryokan Museum.  You can visit the museum from 9 AM to 5 PM every day for a deep understanding of the local history.  Moreover, you will find signage in Japanese and English for every pond. My Trip To Oshino Hakkai I felt a bit out of place when I got to Oshino Hakkai.  I thought it would be a nice, quiet area for reflection and meditation, free of other people.  However, I found a busy and fully built-out village of people, shops selling food, and many shoppers and visitors to the area, as well as people engaging with local merchants about the items that were being sold.  There were also a lot of people around Wakuike Pond, and they were excited to see how clear the water of the pond was and the fish that were swimming in the pond. 1. Finding Solitude And Peace Within The City Although I typically search for the peace of solitude, I did not mind being in a populated environment.  I became curious after wandering among the crowds to find out where my curiosity would take me.  I found a quiet, undeveloped area just minutes from the main road, where I could hear the water from the pond, see ducks on the water, and watch an old man with two little boys quietly fishing right next to me. 2. Folklore And Galactic History The folklore & Galactic history of the 8 springs were fascinating to explore. Especially, that water from Wakuike Pond traveled on the Space Shuttle Challenger in 1983 for a snow-making experiment in space! 3. My Personal Highlight  The highlight for me was the open-air museum at the Hanoki Bayashi Shiryokan. It was a true escape from contemporary living, immersing yourself in the cultural heritage of the area. 4. Hannoki Bayashi Shiryokan: The Main Attraction Of The Trip  To tell the truth, I went to Oshino Hakkai because of Hannoki Bayashi Shiryokan.  One of the most amazing sights I've seen in the Five Lakes region was the thatched-roof farmhouses against a colorful garden and the imposing backdrop of Mount Fuji. I became engrossed in the displays of antique household items and rustic farming implements inside the traditional farmhouse.  The tour was brief, but I stayed by the big pond long after I was done because of the subtle beauty of the architecture.  I couldn't resist making another lap because the landscaping was so welcoming.
