Chilaw drew my attention with the smell of drying fish at the harbor. As I reached the fishing town, I heard a low chant drifting out of a Shiva temple.  Chilaw, which almost a year back had a Korea FAO Sustainable and Innovative Fisheries and Aquaculture Programme (KOFAF) to boost the shrimp aquaculture of Sri Lanka, is a fishing town first.  Then, it is a pilgrimage site and almost as an afterthought, a beach destination.  Overall, it felt so unpolished and real in a way that many famous coastal stops in Sri Lanka have lost for a long time. How To Reach Chilaw, Sri Lanka And Get Around?  Chilaw is around 52.9 km away from the Bandaranaike International Airport. By road, the journey is around 1.5 hours to 2 hours.  The town's own railway station is about 3 kilometres from the centre, with regular services connecting to Colombo along the coastal line. From the town center, you can take a short ride to the fish market and near St. Mary's Church. You can even ferry to Anawilundawa and back after a half-day trip.  However, here, I had to negotiate a lot with the drivers. You must also fix the price upfront so that they do not end up adding more to the price during the trip.  What Are The Top Attractions In Chilaw?  Chilaw does not offer a resort trip like Bentota or Hikkaduwa. It mostly has simple guesthouses as accommodations.  Also, if you want to focus on the quieter beach experience, you can stay in the larger properties in Marawila.  Still, Chilaw is not like a typical touristy or bucket-list destination, and here are the places I visited during my stay.  1. Munneswaram Temple Like the Pancha Bhoota Sthals in India, Sri Lanka also has its five ancient Ishwarams dedicated to Lord Shiva.  Munneswaram is one of them.  The temple is a complex of five temples, dedicated to Shiva, Ganesha, Ayyanayake, Kali, and, notably, a shrine to the Buddha as well.  This temple once again reminded me that the religious traditions of Sri Lanka have always been inclusive. Also, they have often overlapped with each other, rather than staying separate.  Why Is The Munneswaram Temple So Special?  The temple has a mythological association with the Ramayana. It is said that Lord Ramachandra worshipped Lord Shiva here for penance after killing Ravana, who was an ardent Shiva devotee and a Brahman.  Along with the mythological connection, the temple also stands out with its ambiance. As I entered the temple, the incense smoke rose over the Dravidian-style gopuram.  Also, there was a practiced calm even if the priests and devotees moved between the shrines.  However, the temple bustles with energy and human presence during the annual Munneswaram festival.  It is usually held in August, and the entire town seems to reorganise itself around the procession. 2. Chilaw Lagoon And The Sand Spits Chilaw picks its own rhythm from the lagoon. It is fringed by sixteen species of mangrove and reaches close to four metres at its deepest point before opening into the Indian Ocean. I took a late-afternoon boat out with a local fisherman who moonlights as a guide.  I spotted egrets lifting off the mangrove roots, and the occasional splash of a mullet. Also, with absolutely no other tourists in sight, it was the most peaceful 1 hour in Chilaw.  The lagoon isn't just scenic. It is a working fishery that supports well over a thousand families in the area, and you feel that livelihood everywhere. I saw the nets drying along the banks to the small jetties where boats are unloaded each morning.  Nearby, the Chilaw sand spits offer a quieter, more unusual landscape for birdwatchers, with shifting sandbanks that host wading birds you won't easily spot elsewhere on this coast. Regarding the charges, you have to negotiate directly with a fisherman at the jetty rather than book through a formal operator. My boat ride cost me LKR 500.   So, this is still very much an informal, word-of-mouth arrangement, and that is why there will be a lot of negotiations regarding the trip duration and the charges.  3. Anawilundawa Wetland Sanctuary If you are staying in Chilaw, do not skip a half-day trip to Anawilundawa, located between Chilaw and Puttalam.  This 1400 hectares area is a Ramsar Site, and it has three distinct ecosystems. You will find a  mangrove swamp, coastal saltwater belt, and freshwater lakes. Also, the biodiversity numbers are amazing. 150 Bord Species 20 Mammal Species 70 Types of Butterflies Moreover, half of the freshwater fish species in Sri Lanka call Anawilundawa Wetland Sanctuary their home.  I made a mistake by not taking a guide with me for the wetland visit.  A local birder pointed out species from the boat that I would have completely missed on my own, including a painted stork colony that was, frankly, worth the whole detour. If birdwatching is even a mild interest, hire a guide at the entrance.  It is inexpensive and transforms the visit. The entry is free, and the guide cost will be around LKR 1500 for two hours. Also, the sanctuary remains open from 6 AM to 6 PM.  4. Faith Along The Coast: Churches And Kovils Home to the Munneswaram Temple, Chilaw also harbors a Catholic heritage.  The St. Mary's Church in the town centre is a prominent example, and its architecture and quiet courtyard make it worth a stop even outside service hours.  A short drive away in Thalawila, St. Anne's Church draws thousands of pilgrims each July for its annual feast, one of the larger Catholic gatherings on this stretch of coast, complete with processions and all-night vigils. What struck me most, wandering between kovils, churches, and small unnamed shrines tucked down side streets, was how unremarkable this coexistence felt to the people living it. Nobody made a point of it.  It was simply how the town worked. 5. Beaches, Toddy Taverns, And The Fish Market Chilaw beaches are not the typical postcard frames you will find on the southern coast.  Silver Beach, the most prominent among them, is right in town. I loved an early evening walk there.  Also, nearby Marawila offers a longer, quieter stretch of sand if you are willing to drive twenty minutes north. For a real sense of the town, though, skip the beach and get to the Chilaw fish market before 7 AM.  It was loud, slippery underfoot, and completely unstaged. Furthermore, when the boats came in, auctioneers shouted prices, and vendors were already frying fresh catch on the spot.  I ended up having a breakfast of string hoppers and coconut sambol from a stall two feet from the water, and it remains one of the best meals of the trip. Later, I visited one small family-run toddy tavern. It served fresh fermented palm sap alongside coconut-based snacks.  It was strong, and I just took a few sips. Though it is a slice of daily Chilaw life, it is not for someone who is not used to it.  What Is The Best Time To Visit Chilaw?  Being on the west coast, Chilaw follows a different rhythm than the south or east. Why Chilaw Is Worth It Chilaw is not a destination that announces itself.  There is no single landmark that makes it onto every Sri Lanka itinerary, no beach that dominates Instagram feeds.  What it offers instead is texture. It has a working fish market, a thousand-year-old temple complex, mangrove lagoons, and a religious diversity that's lived rather than performed.  If you are the kind of traveller who would rather stumble into a real town than tick off a famous one, Chilaw is worth far more than the quick pass-through I originally planned.

Yes, the Kandy to Ella Train is still closed. Even if you search for the Kandy to Ella trains on the Sri Lanka Railways website now, it will show, “The rail line from Kandy to Ella is still under repair. Please select Ambewela as your closest alternative departure station.” So, it means that the Sri Lankan Railways, especially the iconic Kandy to Ella train route, is still recovering from the destruction of Cyclone Ditwah in 2025.  However, operation of the Ella Odyssey train has resumed from 7th January, 2026.  Nevertheless, as everyone waits for the Kandy to Ella train route to be fully functional, here, I want to share my experience of an iconic train ride on this Kandy to Ella route.  I will also share details about the Ella Odyssey Train, now running between Ambewela and Badulla.  Kandy To Ella Train Journey: Quick Facts  FactsDetailsRoute DistanceAround 120 KmBest ClassReserved Second ClassBest Time for the Train JourneyDecember to April The Most Beautiful Stretch Nanu Oya and EllaRail Route Built In1864 The Kandy To Ella Train Journey: Why Is It So Famous?  The Kandy to Ella train service was started in the British period for the transportation of tea to the highlands.  However, today, it is acknowledged as the most beautiful railway route in Sri Lanka.  The best thing is that the scenes outside the train window do not remain static. From small villages to tea plantations, hills, and waterfalls,  Furthermore, the train on this route passes at a slow pace, making the experience all the more immersive.  So, a train journey on this route is one of the best things to do in Ella and, in fact, one of the top attractions in Sri Lanka.  My Experience Of The Kandy To Ella Train Journey  If you are traveling from Colombo to Kandy, you now have to take a bus.  However, I visited before the devastation caused by Cyclone Ditwah. So, I enjoyed my train journey from Colombo to Kandy.  From the Kandy Lake to the iconic Temple Of The Tooth, the top attractions in Kandy make it the cultural epicenter of the country.  After exploring Kandy, I took a train ride to Ella, and here is how I enjoyed the journey.  1. Train Journey Started From The Kandy Station  Like the city itself, the Kandy Railway Station is also very pretty.  It has a history dating back to the British era. Even today, behind its modern exterior, you will find a Victorian interior and platforms.  So, once you enter the station, you will feel history and nostalgia becoming palpable in front of your eyes.  The station is hot and humid, and the crowd may seem a little annoying.  However, a glimpse of the iconic blue train of Sri Lanka will take all irritation away.  2. The Blue Train  The train reached Kandy station, and the color of the Chinese diesel locomotive was turquoise blue.  I boarded the third-class compartment and luckily got a seat.  I already knew about the history of this rail route at the National Railway Museum, Kadugannawa.  The train has been operating since the 1920s. However, passengers started traveling in these trains in the 1960s.  Nevertheless, the train was jolting heavily, and it slowly left Kandy, making its way to the hill country.  Cricket And More  Coming from India, it was fun talking about cricket with the Sri Lankan locals in the train.  As they showered their love for every cricketing legend, from Sachin Tendulkar to Virat Kohli, I also shared my adoration for Kumar Sangakkara and Sanath Jayasuriya.  You know what the best thing about this train ride was? The train moved slowly. However, the wind coming through the windows got mixed with the voices of the locals singing.  Overall, it was a feeling of freedom and excitement.  The Vendors  The Kandy to Ella train ride will be incomplete without having chai and hot wade. As the vendors get on board, the fragrance of hot wade and tea immediately makes you hungry.  Also, as soon as the train leaves the Kandy station, you start enjoying the cool breeze.  The View  Ever-stretching tea plantations, misty mountains, and beautiful stations, I got to see everything throughout the train journey from Kandy to Ella.  So, within a few hours, I got a glimpse of the local lives of Sri Lanka.  I also understood why it is called one of the greatest train rides in the world.  Continuing The Kandy To Ella Rail Route Journey: Toward The Nine Arch Bridge And Demodara Railway Loop Once I got down at Ella after a train ride from Kandy, I took a tuk-tuk to reach the iconic Nine Arch Bridge.  The Nine Arch Bridge is a historic landmark for its role in World War I. The first train on the bridge passes at 9:30 AM, and the last train passes at 5:30 PM.  Moreover, along with the Nine Arch Bridge, the Demodara Railway Loop is another attraction on this route.  I had the most peaceful experience of train riding at the Demodara Railway Loop, as unlike the Kandy to Ella train, it was not crowded at all.  The Kandy To Ella Train: Running Between Ambewela And Badulla Now  Train $11015 runs between Ambewela and Badulla except Wednesdays. It departs the Ambewela station at 3 PM and reaches Badulla at 5:46 PM.  You can buy a first-class ticket, and it costs ₹INR 1000.  Furthermore, the train $11005 leaves the Ambewela Station at 9:30 AM and reaches Badulla at 12:16 PM.  You can buy second-class and third-class train tickets. A third-class ticket costs ₹575 and a second-class ticket costs ₹770.  Moreover, on Wednesdays, train #111043 departs Ambewela at 1:30 PM and reaches Badulla at 4:15 PM. The northernmost major city of Sri Lanka is famous for its beautiful Hindu temples, such as the Nallur Kandaswamy Kovil and Naguleswaram Temple (Keerimalai). It also stands out with its unique sculptural scenario and great food.  However, very few people talk about the beautiful beaches of Jaffna, such as Kankesanthurai and Casuarina. During my trip to Jaffna, I loved the white sands, calm shallow waters, and Palmyra trees. Also, the Jaffna beaches are a paradigm shift from beach towns like Mirissa.  You will not get the vibrant nightlife or the maddening crowd. The vibe is pristine and slow. And with the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA) focusing on Jaffna now for the diversification of the country’s tourism profile, these beaches are going to play a vital role.  In this Jaffna beach guide, I will talk about the most prominent beaches, the amenities, expert tips, and more.  What Are The Best Beaches Near Jaffna Sri Lanka? The beaches in Jaffna show a contrasting vibe in comparison to the beaches near Colombo, such as Bentota or Unawatuna. The Colombo beaches are touristy and offer watersport activities such as parasailing, diving, and surfing.  On the other hand, the shallow water of Jaffna is ideal for swimming. Also, the golden sands of the Colombo beaches are replaced by the soft white sands.  Overall, the beaches in Jaffna focus more on tranquility and show the slow-paced vibe of the city. You know Jaffna Siesta is a real thing!  1. Casuarina Beach (Karainagar) Casuarina Beach Entrance Fee: 500 LKR (Foreigners), 50 LKR (Locals) Distance from Jaffna: 21 Kms As you reach the Casuarina Beach, a wide stretch of casuarina trees, creating a canopy over your head, welcomes you. The beach gets its name from these trees.  The stretches of the soft white sand of the beach are also surrounded by palm trees. Furthermore, the west-facing is known for beautiful sunset views.  What Are The Things To Do In Casuarina Beach?  Casuarina Beach is a place to relax. The shallow water here is ideal for swimming. You can go to the middle of the ocean, where you will find fishermen in action.  The fishermen ride in a raft-like boat. You can join them and have a conversation about their daily lives and how they survive the sea. For me, it was pretty much the “Riders to the Sea Moment.” Also, Kamban, a middle-aged fisherman of Jaffna, shared something about the impact of the Civil War here. He reminded me of a Reuters report published many years back. It talked about how the Puthumathalan beach, around 113 km from Jaffna, was filled with broken medicine bottles, pieces of clothes, and rusty cooking pots as the aftermath of the civil war.  Nevertheless, Kamban said, “You know, we did not have any food. We could not go out for fishing, and we never knew who would be the next to take a bullet.  We are now recovering and getting tourists. Still, we need more support, and the fear will remain among people of my generation and the next one.” Today, Casuarina Beach has some beach clubs and resorts offering water sports activities such as snorkeling and jet skiing.  Still, I feel, it’s a place to relax and ponder over how the locals are showing resilience to maintain the glory of a city devastated by the Sri Lankan Civil War.  Also, the Casuarina Beach is the place to try the authentic food of Jaffna. I loved the crabs and vadai here.  How To Reach Casuarina Beach From Jaffna?  The most convenient way to reach the Casuarina Beach is to take a private taxi to Jaffna. The cost will be around 1200 LKR.  2.  Kankesanthurai (KKS) Beach Entry Fee: Free Distance from Jaffna: 19 Km How to Reach: Take Tuk-Tuks from Jaffna The Kankesanthurai is a navy-maintained beach with sparkling blue water. It is also just 10 minutes away from the Keerimalai Freshwater Springs, one of the iconic landmarks in the spiritual and cultural landscape of Jaffna. Also, the nearby Thalsevana Resort is a place to relax and try authentic Jaffna cuisine while indulging in the beauty of the pristine beach.  You can swim in Kankesanthurai. However, you need to be careful about the current. However, this beach is more popular for the snorkeling activities and is famous for the Keerimalai to Kankesanthurai Walk.  Kankesanthurai (KKS) Beach Snorkeling  Kankesanthurai, with its shallow water and some marine life and corals visible, is a decent snorkeling site. I saw some sea turtles while swimming at Kankesanthurai beach.   The water here is warm, and the calm conditions make it beginner-friendly. May to September is the best time for snorkeling in Kankesanthurai.  However, there is no established snorkeling facility here. So, you need to bring your own gear, including fins and masks.  So, if you want a proper snorkeling experience, you can explore alternative locations in Sri Lanka, such as the Nilaveli Beach of Pigeon Island, which also has the Pigeon National Park.  The Coral Island of Trincomalee and the southern coastal spots such as Hikkaduwa & Mirissa are some of the best locations to try snorkeling in Jaffna.  Keerimalai To Kankesanthurai Walk The distance between Keerimalai and Kankesanthurai is just around 2 km. So, when you start from Keerimalai and walk north toward Kankesanthurai, you will reach your destination in 25-30 minutes.  There is no marked beach trail for the walk. However, as you proceed, you will experience amazing coastal views and fishing activities, especially near the pier and shorefront.  However, if you want to beat the heat, you can take a tuk-tuk to reach the beach from Keerimalai. Manalkadu Sand Dunes: The Hidden Gems Near Jaffna  Manalkadu sand dunes are the ideal location for an off-the-grid camping experience in Jaffna. Also, at times, I want absolute silence around me. Being an introvert, too many interactions and activities often drain me.  Stargazing in those moments works like a therapy for me. If you are also like me and want the world around you to “Shut Up,” you must try stargazing at Manalkadu.  The long chain of sanddunes here stretches to meet the sea, and this is a geologically striking feature. The desert-like setup and the sand dunes offer some “interesting perspectives” for photography, especially while watching the sunset.  And the best way to experience stargazing at Manalkadu? Try off-grid camping here.  Camping At Manalkadu And Stargazing  I set up my tent on the Manalkadu beach, and the wild, open area with almost no light pollution offered the best stargazing experience. Of course, it was not as vivid as stargazing in Great Barrier Island.  Still, the spontaneity and simplicity won me over. However, Manalkadu is not a formal camping or stargazing site. So, you will need to bring your tent, telescope, red light, water, and other essentials.  Also, we spotted some fishing huts on the beach. We sought their permission, and they happily agreed. In fact, they shared their meal with us, allowing me to spend more time stargazing and enjoying the silence. Things To Pack For Camping At Manalkadu  Manal Kadu means sand jungle in the Tamil Language. True to its name, it is a pristine place where desert, jungle, and the sea co-exist.  Also, it is called the “Swimming Pool of the North.” Nevertheless, since it has a primitive setup, you need to carry some essentials.  Tent Sand Anchors or Stakes Plenty of Food and Water Nearby Portable Stove Cooking Gear Headlamp or Lanterns First-Aid Kit Power Banks Trash Bags The Quiet Alternatives: Jaffna Beaches Do you want to enjoy a sunset stroll by the water with no one around? Visit the quieter alternatives such as the Charty Beach and Akkarai Beach. 1. Charty Beach The Charty Beach is on Velanai Island, and it is a 15 km drive from Jaffna City. You will reach the beach from the city within 30 minutes after a journey through the Jaffna–Pannai–Kayts Road.  The warm water here is ideal for swimming, and you can even try near-shore paddling. So, you must have a clear idea about what to expect at these pristine beaches.  Also, learn about the safety infrastructure before getting into the water.  1. Basic Beach Amenities  Casuarina Beach has paid changing rooms. However, other beaches have no makeshift provisions for changing and resting.  So, you must carry beach umbrellas and folding chairs if you don’t want to sit on the sand.  There is no official presence of a lifeguard or support on these beaches. Network coverage is decent. However, you can face connectivity issues if the weather deteriorates.  The beaches in Jaffna are accessible from Jaffna City by tuk-tuk and other vehicles. However, in Casuarina Beach, you will have to pay a small fee for entrance and parking your vehicle.  2. Safety And Norms Do not go very far into the ocean water, as there can be strong currents, and there is no formal lifeguard support.  Also, be careful while walking barefoot on the sand,d as there can be seashells and seaweeds.  In addition, dress modestly, shorts and T-shirts are fine! Also, do not leave trash behind.  Exploring The Jaffna Coastline: Know The Expert Tips  Want to explore the coastal beauty of Jaffna to the fullest? Follow these expert tips.  1. Go On Weekdays You will find local buses packed around the Casuarina Beach, and the noise of loud music can be an annoying factor.  Choose a Monday or Tuesday for your ocean visit to spend some moments of quietude. 2. Bring Reef Shoes The Charty and KKS beaches have sharp dead coral very close to the water's edge. So, your feet may get a cut if you don’t wear reef shoes.  3. Have Navy Food  When you are visiting the Kankesanthurai (KKS) beach, you don’t need to eat at a beach shack. You can walk into the Thalsevana Holiday Resort run by the military.  Enjoy a hygienic and tasty lunch and cold beer there while enjoying the ocean view. 4. Riding On Manalkadu? You Will Need A 4X4  You can drive a scooter to Manalkadu. However, you have to park it on the hard road. You cannot take it to ride onto the sand dunes, and the wheels will get stuck.  5. Morning Is The Best Time For The Beach Visit  You cannot visit a beach in Jaffna at noon. The Northern Sun is scorching. So, plan a visit between 7 AM and 8 AM or after 4 PM.  6. You Can Wade In Akkrai But Cannot Swim  The water at the Akkarai Beach is usually knee-deep. So, you can wade through the water of this beautiful beach.  However, swimming does not look like an ideal activity here.  7. Changing Rooms Are Basic The Casuarina Beach has changing rooms. However, these rooms are just concrete stalls with a bucket of water.  You will have to bring your towel and toilet paper.  8. Respect The Fishermen Most beaches in Jaffna are like a workspace for the fishermen. So, there will be fishing boats and nets on the shore.  You cannot step on or lie on them. Do not tamper with them.  9. Drink Thambili To Stay Hydrated  Jaffna beaches do not have places serving fancy cocktails. The best refreshment is to drink the King Coconut or Thambili water.  It replenishes the micronutrients, and it is a must-have when the Sun is scorching. What Are The Authority Voices On Jaffna Beaches And Coastline?  “Casuarina Beach is named after the shady trees that line it, offering a rare respite from the scorching Northern sun. It’s the closest Jaffna gets to a holiday vibe.” - The Lonely Planet.  “Don’t expect the polished tourism of the South.
