Rio de Janeiro sweeps you up the moment you arrive. Golden beaches stretch for miles, samba rhythms spill from bars in Lapa, and cable cars glide up Sugarloaf Mountain for some of the best views on Earth.  Life here is colorful and fast-moving, and part of slipping into that rhythm is knowing how far your Brazilian real will take you - from a chair on Ipanema beach to a plate of feijoada in a neighborhood café. Before we go on, here is a quick Rio de Janeiro travel guide. Just a quick note: exchange rates and prices don’t stay still. At the moment, 1 US dollar equals about 5.4 Brazilian reais, but it’s best to check the latest rates and costs before you travel. Rio de Janeiro Travel Guide: What To Expect? Rio de Janeiro is one of the best cities you can explore. It is one of those few places that has a care-free energy and will make you feel alive. The beaches, food, and major attractions will draw you to it without even trying too hard. Here is a simple Rio de Janeiro travel guide. Beaches - Rio’s Living Rooms The beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema are more than postcards - they’re part of daily life. Locals jog along the promenade in the morning, families gather for a swim, and groups of friends set up for impromptu games of beach volleyball or footvolley. Tourists blend right in, renting chairs and umbrellas from vendors for around R$10-15 per piece. Snacks come to you. Vendors walk the sand offering everything from ice-cold coconuts (R$8-10) to grilled queijo coalho (cheese skewers) for about R$12. You can even try a caipirinha mixed fresh on the spot, usually for R$15-20. These are usually cash-only transactions, and the small notes feel like part of the ritual - bargaining isn’t common, but handing over a few reais feels easy and authentic. Spend an afternoon at Arpoador, the rocky point between Copacabana and Ipanema, and you’ll see why locals gather here at sunset. It doesn’t cost more than a bus ride (R$5) to get there, and yet it’s one of the richest experiences you’ll take home. Food: From Street Bites to Sit-Down Meals Rio has a huge range of food. Start with breakfast like a local: pão de queijo (cheese bread) and strong coffee, often no more than R$10-15.  Step into a juice bar and you’ll find tropical flavors like passion fruit, guava, or the ever-popular açaí bowl, usually under R$20 for a generous portion. At lunchtime, the prato feito is king. This “set plate” of rice, beans, salad, and a protein such as beef, chicken, or fish costs R$25-35 and will keep you full all day.  You will get various self-service buffets that charge by weight. You will get roasted meats, vegetables, and farofa, and you will have to pay around R$30-40. For dinner, you can choose what you prefer. You can try something casual or something fancy. If you prefer a mid-range seafood meal along with drinks, it will cost somewhere around R$80-100 per person.  However, a proper night out in Ipanema at a fancy fine-dining spot might cost around R$200-250.  You can even visit Churrascarias, which is a Brazilian steakhouse. It is an event in itself. They have endless skewers of grilled meats, side dishes, and salad bars. You can expect to pay somewhere around R$120-180 per person. However, this does not include drinks. All these places accept cards, but it is better to keep some cash handy for bakeries and street food. Attractions: Big Names And Hidden Gems There are various major icons in Rio, and those are actually worth it. You can take the Sugarloaf Mountain cable car for around R$150, and the ride itself is a major part of the thrill. The glass walls will give you a 360-degree view of the way from above the city. You can visit Christ the Redeemer, resting on Corcovado Mountain, for R$100. The moment you stand at its feet and see the city from there, you get an amazing view. You can carry cards as both attractions accept payment in cards. However, it is better to carry some cash for small vendors, tacos, or snacks. Rio is also filled with a lot of gems that you can see for free or for a low cost.  The Selarón Steps, covered in colorful tiles from around the world, cost nothing to climb. A stroll through Santa Teresa’s narrow streets will take you past murals, studios, and cafés where you can pause for a R$12 espresso. At night, head to Lapa to experience samba at its source. Getting Around Rio is quite a big city, but it is not difficult once you understand the system. You can take the metro, it's quite safe and clean, and a single ride costs around R$5.  Moreover, if you have a rechargeable RioCard, it will save you a lot of time and work. You will be able to use it for different types of transport, including trains and buses.  You can take a bus, which goes almost to the city, and the fare is quite similar to the metro. Here, you can get taxis for around R$6, and cross-town trips generally range around R$40-60. Also, Uber and other apps like these are popular, and often offer rides at a cheaper rate than a taxi. If you want, you can pay in-app with the card, and that way, you will not have to use cash for payment.  For day-trips outside the city, you will get intercity buses. This will help you explore the outskirts within a budget. If you are planning to visit the historic mountain town, Petropolis, you can explore it for around R$40-50. Moreover, if you are planning to take a longer ride to Búzios, the beach town, you will be able to visit it for around R$70-80. You can get the bus tickets online or from the bus station as well.  How Much To Budget You need to prepare a budget for a trip. However, the budget depends on the kind of trip you want to have. Budget travel: It will cost you around R$200-250 for a day, including hostels, street food, public transport, and free attractions. Mid-range: It will cost you around R$600. You will get comfortable hotels, visit some of the major landmarks, and have some casual as well as sit-down meals. High comfort: This will cost you around R$1000 and above. One of the hotspots of Puerto Rico, both travelers and locals are attracted to this place.   La Factoria – This bar is popular and known for its creative cocktails such as espresso martini, lavender mule and lager beer, hijos de Borinquen, and others! A low-lit salsa-filled ambiance is quite homely with their delicious fish tacos, stuffed mushrooms, fried goat cheese balls, and others.    Chicharron - One of the most delicious tapas menus, this restaurant is one of the best places to taste the Puerto Rican malanga soup. You are in for a treat!   Safety Tips for Solo Women Traveler   The safety tips that I am sharing with you are from my experience as a solo female traveler! My experiences have helped me create a checklist for myself especially when I am traveling alone, both domestically and internationally.   Select your accommodation area in a well-lit neighborhood. This will ensure your safety even when you are returning late to your hotel or leaving early to visit a tourist place. Another thing to keep in mind, if you are walking alone, try to be on proper-lit roads, especially at night.   It is important to be aware of your surroundings at all times, even when in a crowd. I recently traveled to a crowded city in India, and I realized, that pickpockets and petty theft are most rampant in crowds. Even at night, you must be aware of your surroundings.   When using transportation, use reputable and trusted individual drivers and organizations for ride-sharing services, organized tours, and taxis.   Try not to flaunt too much in terms of clothing or accessories. For example, it is better if you do not wear expensive watches, expensive bags, jewelry, and large amounts of cash.   You must keep track of the weather in San Juan and check the forecast before you make the plans. It is better to be prepared especially because you are a visitor to the city hence, you might not get help whenever you need it. Long-haul flights are dreadful. The stark, urbane terminals and the long nights of tiresome, cram-y seating sure work you up just thinking about it. The flights that roll over to the next morning always have some drama up their sleeves. Then came the rescue team from Taiwan- EVA Air, which is currently one of the 10 Skytrax 5-star airlines in the world. Would you believe it if I told you it was little known even up until a few years back? It was founded in 1989. However, I started hearing about this flight in the early 1990s when my extended family would talk about this new carrier with non-stop flights on B747-400 jets. Back then, it sounded like a story from another realm. I would hear them talk about the aroma of delicious noodles when woken up from sleep by a flight attendant as a late-night snack. I also heard of the very non-conforming Sanrio aircraft that were Hello Kitty Jets, decked out completely from the headrests to the meal cutlery. Everything featured the widely adored character. I finally had the chance to board it. Despite all the different things that this airline was revolutionizing, the most exciting part as a young traveler still remained the all-new cabin category between the economy and the EVA Air business class. This change was surprisingly affordable, and I was willing to upgrade for my 14+ hour flight home. Here I am going to share my experience of flying from New York to Taipei. It had four cabins, which was a first at that time. The four cabins included Super First, Super Deluxe, Economy Deluxe, and Economy. With Economy Deluxe, the airline became the first to introduce an improved economy cabin that is the Economy Deluxe. It became a benchmark for the airline as most others took two to three decades to introduce this cabin to their list of offerings. Recently (last summer), KLM debuted its premium economy. The seat prices are reasonable with business class-like perks. My Taipei experience was very endearing to me because of its convenient pair-up of high quality and affordability. The street food, the stationery, and the convenience stores all added to my love for Taipei. The EVA Air flight was a big cherry on top because all of that now comes in an aircraft. The perks of this flight began even before I boarded it. This airline offers free shuttles from 2 Pennsylvania and 5 New Jersey locations toward JFK Airport. Dallas to Houston Airport also offers a free shuttle service. It has successfully removed one of the biggest issues of international travel, which is simply getting to the airport. I took a $20 Uber to the Jersey City stop, which would have otherwise been a $130 Uber ride all the way to the airport. Being a part of the Star Alliance, I was granted access to the lounge with my United Gold status. It allowed me to upgrade my boarding from Zone 4 to Zone 1. As soon as I got into the cabin, it felt luxurious. They used sweet endearments with my name in Mandarin. They helped me settle in my seat and confirmed my meal selection, which I had previously made online. The seats had a 2-4-2 arrangement, and I had managed to secure a front-row seat, which meant no under-seat coverage but plenty of leg space. On my seat, there were slippers, a water bottle, noise-canceling headphones, and a cozy blanket that felt like a cloud. The blanket was quilted on one surface and had faux fur on the opposite side. How It Went An attendant soon came and gave me an overnight bag. It was a Kipling amenity kit consisting of Hudson Made New York products. It had the brand’s trademark monkey keychain with a scene of Taiwan’s Yilan on the bag. My entire EVA Air flight felt like a warm, pamper session with juice, fruits, and snacks while suspended at 30,000 feet mid air. The breakfast was amazing, with Chinese-style scallop congee with egg & Chinese sausage. There was an option for another Western version that comprised smoked turkey accompanied by cheddar cheese. There was also a “leisure delight” meal in between the meals with BBQ chicken-filled brioche roll. The restrooms were clean, and I can say so because I went three times, and it was clean each time. To clarify, I took a private plane recently that got filthy by the last hour of the flight, which was one-third the duration of the EVA Air. When I took the return journey, I wanted to take things further, getting myself the business class name Royal Laurel. It featured 6.5-foot-long lie-flat seats, a retractable armrest, a cocktail table, and a shoe cabinet. This cabin had a 1-2-1 configuration with dated seats compared to other airlines. EVA Air raised the bar, however, with their Rimowa & Salvatore Ferragamo branded care kit and a complementary Jason Wu pajama set. All the passengers ended up wearing it, and I, too, could not resist it. I wore it all the way home. The plaid duvet was so snug and comfy I asked where I could buy one. At one point, I fell asleep and dreamt of those noodles. But it was not my dream… they did bring noodles in between our slumber, and it just completed the experience all around.
