Exeter is a great city to explore because there are a ton of interesting hidden spots to discover. These are a few of our favorites that will entice you to travel to Exeter by coach and find some hidden treasures of your own.

The most well-known features of Exeter, the county seat of Devon, are its stunning canal that leads to the sea and its Gothic-styled Norman Cathedral. Exeter is renowned for its extensive history, which predates the Romans. The city is still filled with historical artifacts from the past, such as numerous Roman and medieval structures.

Naturally, the first thing that everyone needs to know is where to get the best food and drink. Thus, why not address both at one location?

The Fat Pig is a classic, welcoming pub with a rotating menu of seasonal specialties and gastropub favorites. And if that wasn’t enough, you can pair your meal with an enormous selection of beers, spirits, and anything else that piques your interest! Foodies will love it together.

On the other hand, Rendezvous Wine Bar provides a delectable assortment of wines from around the world, all unified by a rustic yet elegant look and feel, if you’re searching for a quiet place to end your evening. A perfect place to spend time with loved ones, friends, or for a late-night drink.

You’ll need to rest your legs after all that walking, and where better to do so than at one of Exeter’s best-kept secrets?

Bright and airy, Caffe Espresso offers a wide selection of mouthwatering pastries, mouthwatering lunch options, and of course, excellent coffee. But what makes it unique is a specific table upstairs by the window with a view of Exeter Castle. It’s a great place to talk over a plate of something delicious and a steaming mug.

Since J.K. Rowling attended Exeter University as an undergraduate, her novels have been influenced by the city, which is evident in many parts of the city. This is quite possibly the best thing to do in Exeter for a Harry Potter fan.

For instance, Gandy Street is definitely worth exploring because it’s home to many interesting and quirky stores and is rumored to have served as the model for Diagon Alley in the Harry Potter novels.

Somewhere in the city, a door on Cathedral Green is believed to have served as the model for the Room of Requirement Door, and the Firehouse across town might have served as the model for the fictional “Leakey Cauldron.” In any case, you can count on the greatest (and biggest) pizzas in Devon when you visit the Firehouse!

Shopping

Ultimately, you must do a little souvenir shopping before leaving Exeter, right? The city is full of fantastic independent stores that offer a wide variety of one-of-a-kind goods for you to purchase. Shopping is undoubtedly the best thing to do in Exeter.

Pretty gift and home decor shop Georgie & Flo has a great selection of jewelry, candles, ceramics, and other items. Till your next visit, Roly’s Fudge, a wonderful family-run fudge company, and Exeter Gin, the city’s premium gin manufacturer, should satisfy your taste buds.

Spend a tranquil afternoon strolling along the River Exe and discovering your own little treasures. Belle Isle Park and other more serene spots are located downstream from the bustling Exeter Quay area, which serves as a starting point.

Not in the mood to go it alone? Exeter actually offers 16 free walking tours, which few people are aware of. Red Coat Guided Tours are an excellent way to discover the culture of the city, including stops at odd locations, historical sites, maritime areas, and more.

Visit The Exeter Quay

Known as “Exeter quayside,” Exeter Quay was originally utilized as a port in prehistoric times. Located next to the River Exe, the waterway that gives Exeter its name, rail had largely replaced commercial shipping here by the 19th century.

One of the last of its kind to remain in service in the UK to this day is the hand-operated “Butts Ferry.” The historic quayside is now only ten minutes’ walk downhill from the city center. If you are into ferrying, add this to your list of things to do in Exeter.

Once you arrive, you’ll think you’ve completely left the city behind and are in a serene haven full of quirky cafés and antique stores. When night falls, the area is bustling with nightclubs and bars, making it the ideal spot to have dinner by the water with friends.

There are also canoe and dragon boat races held here on occasion throughout the year. Strolling alongside the lovely river, which eventually meanders out to sea, is one of the most tranquil activities Exeter has to offer.

4 Fun Trip Ideas To Plan For This Year

BY  Arnab Feb 17, 2023

No matter where you live or what you do for a living, there’s a good chance you will want to take some sort of vacation this year. Everyone needs some downtime to recharge their batteries, and as you’re probably well aware, trying to do so at home can sometimes be futile. Taking a trip out of town can eliminate any compulsion to check in at the office or work on your “wanna-do list” of repairs and maintenance around the house. This doesn’t mean you have to fly off to the beautiful Malaysia Bay, but at least part of your time off should be spent doing something really enjoyable! Here Are Four Fun Trip Ideas To Plan For This Year Whether you travel regularly and just want to do something new and fun or haven’t been out of your city in years, one or two of the following trip ideas may be the perfect addition to your time off plans. 1. While It’s Still Winter Unless you think snow and winter are for the birds, this is the perfect time of the year to travel to Vermont or Colorado for outdoor fun. Packing up your ski clothes and visiting a popular resort is a great way to get outdoors, exercise, and have fun on the slopes. Conversely, renting a cabin in a small mountain town and enjoying some time alone with that special someone is a great way to strengthen your relationship. Visit the shops and restaurants owned by locals, go to nearby tourist attractions like the famous Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado, and unwind while seeing and doing fun new things. 2. Outdoor Fun These days, you can find zip-lining opportunities just about everywhere you go. The experience is unforgettable, and if you get a good head strap camera mount, you’ll be able to relive the experience and show off your fun to friends and family. In some places, you can find tours that will take you to several zip line locations throughout the day. Another great way to enjoy the local area you’re visiting is to hit the lakes, parks, and trails for hiking. However, take the time to review some crucial hiking tips and ensure that you’re properly equipped before heading out. 3. H2O This summer, consider heading to the coast for fun in the sun and waves. While you’re there, get adventurous and get some wing-surfer gear, or better yet, try paragliding or a helicopter tour of the beach. Seeing the coastline from that height can give you a whole new perspective and add a layer of fun that is unforgettable. Alternatively, visiting the waterparks like Adventure Lagoon or Discovery Cove is an excellent way to build lifelong memories if you're vacationing with the kids. If you want to see as many as possible during your trip, make South Dakota or Missouri your destination, as they have 16.4 and 16.3 parks per capita, respectively. 4. Live it Up A fun way to have a memorable trip is to go as extravagant as possible. Stay in a boutique hotel, pack your suit or favorite dress, eat at a couple of higher-end restaurants, and take a romantic helicopter tour of the city. Having a good time and relaxing a little bit is exactly what trips away are supposed to be for. Go somewhere new, try something you’ve never done before, and get outside of your comfort zone, and you’re virtually assured of having a really fun time. Whales And Sea Lions! Exploring Wildlife At Kenai Fjords National Park

BY  Sibashree Jul 29, 2024

Kenai Fjords National Park is a place rich in biodiversity. Like the Dry Tortugas National Park, it also harbors a diverse marine ecosystem and a wide range of birds.   Further, it is an elusive land of glaciers, icy lands, rocky mountains, and green canopies. It is also the park where you can take part in activities like hunting, fishing, petting at Exit Glacier, boating, and kayaking. However, the most fascinating activity to do here is watching wildlife.   Here, I will be your entourage in finding how the wilderness becomes alive at the Kenai Fjords National Park.   Exploring Kenai Fjords National Park Wildlife   The Kenai Fjords National Park has one of the highest footfalls among the national parks of America. In 2023, 387,525 people visited this National Park thanks to its wildlife and the most dramatic landscape with glaciers, mountains, ocean, and valleys. (Source)   Further, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game explains why and how the geographical features of the National Park make it rich in wildlife and biodiversity. About the habitat, it says,   “The park contains shallow bays and estuaries, and deeper marine habitats. Regional currents drive nutrients into outer Resurrection Bay, making that area especially rich in fish and an early location for spring bloom of plankton and algae. Cliffs and rocky shores create nesting sites for birds and haul-out areas for marine mammals.”  Do you want a slice of wildlife at this park where whales and mountain goats cohabit in the most amazing way? Let’s explore.   However, if you are more interested in amphibians and reptiles, the Everglades National Park will be your go-to destination.   Whales At Kenai Fjords National Park Wildlife  Watching the whales is one of the best activities to do at Kenai Fjords National Park. You can see the whales here throughout the year.   The table below presents a sneak peek into the different species of whales and their best viewing time.  Type of Whale  Best Viewing Time  Humpback Whale Mid-May to August Orca or Killer Whale Mid-May to June Gray Whale Mid-April to May Fin Whale May to September  You can easily spot whales on the surface of the water. As they spout, fluke dive, breach, or spy hop in the water, you will get to know about their playful nature.   The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) ensures that cruising companies and visitors maintain respectful behavior when they are on whale-watching trips.   Other Sea Mammals At Kenai Fjords  Kenai Fjords is home to many sea mammals along with various species of whales. Don’t forget to catch a glimpse of Dall’s Porpoises, harbor seals, sea otters, and sea lions.   Dall’s Porpoise  Dall’s Porpoises look like orcas but are faster. They eat lanternfish, octopus, and squid.   Harbor Seals  You will find these cute sea mammals resting around active glaciers. They also stay on ice floes. They love to eat shellfish and fish.   Sea Otters  You will spot the playful sea otters swimming on their back in the water. They love fish, crabs, sea urchins, and squids.  They are furry, and the funniest thing is to see them using their bellies as tables. For sure, you will want to grab a soft toy version of these sea mammals.   Stellar Sea Lions   Stellar sea lions are an endangered species, and they stay on the icy shore of the sea. They have reddish fur, and they are 6-8 in height.  These mammals survive on fish and mollusks.   Birds At Kenai Fjords  From the NPS archive, a historical document on Kenai Fjords National Park says,   “Kenai Fjords provides habitat for at least 191 species of birds. The black oystercatcher spends most of its time feeding in the rich intertidal zone. Tufted and horned puffins nest in rock crevices along the coast. Bald eagles patrol the waters in search of salmon and other fish.”   It’s time we meet the birds and learn briefly about them.   Horned Puffins  These beautiful birds have unique black horn-like markings over their eyes. The touch of red on the tip of their beaks further makes them easily distinguishable.  You must visit the Kenai Fjords from mid-May to August to catch a glimpse of these birds.   Bald Eagles   You may catch bald eagles preying on fish and waterfowl. They get their name from their white-feathered head.   Peregrine Falcons  Known for excellent hunting abilities, peregrine falcons have a vibrant touch of yellow around their eyes and on their beaks.   Along with these birds, you can also see birds like the common murre, black-legged kittiwake, and cormorant at Kenai Fjords National Park.   Land Mammals At Kenai Fjords  Mountain goats and brown and black bears are common at Kenai Fjords. The mountain goats have split hooves for a better grip on the mountains and on the snowy land.   Further, many people visit the Kenai Fjords only to meet black and brown bears. These bears love eating fish, berries, and other vegetation.   Final Words   Global temperature changes and glacier melting have challenged the vast wilderness at Kenai Fjords National Park. Further, the movements of crustal plates beneath the Earth's surface make the landscape and its ecosystem volatile.   So, there is nothing permanent about the animals found in this park, stretching over 1000 square miles of water and land. Also, it is impossible to know about all the species habituating here thanks to the geographical nature and dramatic differences in weather conditions across seasons.  Nevertheless, as you take a tour of this rich national park on a cruise or explore its various parks, make sure to abide by the safety norms. Respect nature and its inhabitants!  This is the best way to experience the natural abundance the park is known for.   Do you have plans to visit the Kenai Fjords anytime soon?
