The year 2023 fall saw the return of Lake Manly or the Death Valley National Park lake. The Badwater Basin is the lowest point in the Death Valley, as well as the entire North America. It is located 282 feet below sea level, and today, the world knows it as a dry and salted flat.   However, a massive downpour caused by Hurricane Hilary in fall 2023 and the “Atmospheric River Effect” this year made the dried lake appear magically. Lastly, the lake had a resurrection in 2005, and suddenly, this trace of life in the barren land looks and feels surreal.   But why did this lake appear all of a sudden? Will it stay? Hurricane Hilary hit Death Valley on 19th-21st August 2023, and its remnants caused more rainfall than the average yearly rainfall (2 inches) at the national park.   Further, a Californian storm or the atmospheric river effect on 4th-7th February 2024 caused 1.5 inches of rainfall. Altogether, the amount of rainfall in this park from the second half of 2023 and the first half of 2024 was 4.9 inches.1   This sudden and unprecedented rainfall caused the rise of Death Valley National Park Lake. In mid-February 2024, the lake had one-foot deep water. Further, it was 6 miles long and 3 miles wide.   NASA has published a series of three images of Lake Manly. The pictures showed the difference between the barren, salted land in July and the waterlogged area in August after the rampage of Hurricane Hilary and Atmospheric River. Further, the pictures also depicted that the lake was almost the same size in August 2023 and February 2024.   Moreover, according to the latest update in April 2024, the lake is getting a steady number of visitors. The reflection of the surrounding peaks looks out of the world in the tranquil water of the lake. There's some snow on the mountaintops. So, the reflection of the snow-capped mountains on the water is very beautiful. Every road in the park was damaged by flash floods, and it took two months to open the first road into the park. Suddenly, in February 2024, a Californian storm or the atmospheric river effect hit the national park. The storm fed the Badwater Basin with water, which enhanced the temporary lake.  This storm also pulled down snow from the mountain peaks, and it came down to around 4000 feet in the park.   Will The Ancient Death Valley National Park Lake Stay?   Despite the endorheic nature of the Badwater Basin, the Death Valley National Park Lake is transitional or ephemeral in nature. The evaporation rate here is higher than the water feed it gets. However, the downpours caused by the August 2023 and February 2024 natural calamities have brought all the changes. We now have a lake that shows some potential to stay.   Again, the Amargosa River has flowing water at a high level. So, the basin is getting constantly fed by water from the south. As a result, the lake still stands in the driest place for a span of more than 6 months. In 2005, when the lake reappeared for the last time, it only lasted a week. This time, there is a new scenario around the lake and how long the water will last.  Having said that, nothing specific can be mentioned about how long the lake will stay as the rate of evaporation is still high. Even as I write this article, I realize that the lake may not remain fit for kayaking for long. Still, the lake is likely to exist for some time, offering visitors a renewed site of attraction in the national park.   Overall, the resurgence of the lake and its stay is an “extremely rare event,” as mentioned by the National Park Service authority.   Exploring The Death Valley National Park Lake Area   There is no denying that all roads in the Death Valley National Park lead to the ancient lake, which has come to life. Once you are done taking photographs or seeing the reflection of the surrounding peaks in the water, you can take a walk around the area.   The shores of the lake have a white boundary wall, which is formed because of a high concentration of salt. Further, the Panamint Range, Black Mountains, and barren land surrounding the lake offer you an other-worldly experience.   Moreover, you can explore the nearby looking points in the park to have diverse views of the place. In just six weeks, the water level came down to 1.5 feet from 3 feet.   The NASA report has further highlighted the temporary nature of the lake and the fact that a gust of a strong wind can move this lake by a couple of miles.  Final Words   With “billions of gallons of water,” the Death Valley National Park lake is alive again. The sapphire blue water in the midst of a barren land shows the magic of nature. In February 2024, the lake became a go-to destination for kayaking, thanks to its 1-foot-deep water. It was a tribute to the survivors of the 9/11 attack and the terrorist attacks of 26h February 1993. The Historical Sites of Salem  The city has preserved its colonial buildings and structures well. The three-day-long 1863 battle from July 1st to 3rd led to the loss of around 6000 human lives.  What Happened At The Battle Of Gettysburg? The Battle of Gettysburg was a major conflict between the  Confederate Army of Northern Virginia and the Union Army of the Potomac.  General Robert E. Lee led the Confederate Army, and General George G. Meade led the Union Army. The Union Army grabbed victory in the battle, which was the biggest blow to the Confederate Clan.  5. Ed Gein’s Farmhouse Ed Gein’s farmhouse in Wisconsin was witness to the heinous acts of serial killers in the 1950s. Gein was obsessed with his mother, and his ultimate aim was to make a skinsuit to quasi-resurrect her.  His heinous acts include killing women and making household items using their body parts. Ground Zero Ground Zero, or the World Trade Center Site, is one of the topmost sites for dark tourism in USA. The World Trade Center was a commercial complex spanning 16 acres in lower Manhattan. The 9/11 attack in 2001 crashed it into dust as two hijacked planes struck the Twin Towers.  Al-Qaeda, an Islamic Extremist Group founded by Osama bin Laden, was behind this attack and the greatest human tragedy of modern times. As I have mentioned, 2977 people lost their lives in this incident.  Today, the place is important for dark tourism in USA for its educational and historical value. It is also a place to reflect upon the lives lost and how America has risen from this tragedy. It shows the grit and excellence of America as a nation.  What To Do At Ground Zero As A Dark Tourist? Visit the 9/11 Memorial dedicated to the victims. Spend some time near the 9/11 Survivor Tree. Walk through the 9/11 Memorial Glade. Visit the 9/11 Museum. Pay a visit to Saint Paul's Chapel. San Diego’s funny, and it feels like two vacations in one. You can be lazy by the beach and still find yourself hiking or grabbing tacos in some little neighborhood later.  The city’s chill, but not boring, which is kind of rare. If you’ve got a week, you can hit a mix of spots without running yourself ragged. And yeah, there’s always that random “Oh wow, I didn’t plan this, but it’s awesome” moment. So here’s a one week San Diego. It’s beaches, food, history, and a bit of hiking! All of these await you.  You don’t need to follow a very strict plan. However, having a basic plan always helps. What Is The Best One Week San Diego Itinerary?  Terminal 1 of the San Diego International Airport has just undergone a rejuvenation. The transformation has cost a whopping 3 billion US dollars, and the improvements show how the city is committed to serving its guests better. It perfectly blends smart designs, comfort, and technology.  Naturally, the current rejuvenation of Terminal 1 will be a milestone in boosting tourism to the city, which is otherwise fighting a downturn in the tourism sector in 2025. We can see the echo of the same in the words of Kerri Kapich, the COO of the San Diego Tourism Authority.  Kerri’s statement issued in May 2025 stated, “We are starting to see a slowdown. That is obviously a concern to all of us working in travel and tourism since we are the second-largest traded economy here in San Diego." Furthermore, these beaches are crucial for the city to adhere to sustainable and green tourism practices.  La Jolla Cove – Sea lions everywhere (they’re loud and hilarious). The water’s clear, cliffs are super photogenic, and if you’ve got snorkel gear, bring it. Sometimes they rope off parts during sea lion season, but you can still get close enough for a look.  The mornings here are calm, and it usually gets busy in the afternoon.  Mission Beach + Boardwalk – Classic scene. Long stretch of sand, bikes, rollerbladers, dudes juggling, all of it. It’s noisy in a good way. Sunset Cliffs – Come here at the end of the day. The cliffs are dramatic, like movie-scene dramatic. If the tide’s low, you can mess around in tide pools. Local tip: Parking near La Jolla can be a headache. So, reach early.  Day 2: Balboa Park And Downtown Energy Balboa Park is like San Diego showing off with its gardens, museums, and old Spanish-style buildings. Gardens – Some are free (always nice). The Botanical Building has plants everywhere, and the Alcazar Garden feels like a tiled postcard. Museums – Pick your flavor. Art, science, natural history! There are literally 17 of them. You won’t see it all, and that’s fine. Gaslamp Quarter – At night, the downtown buzz kicks in. Rooftop bars, restaurants, live music.  Local tip: Many museums offer free entry on Tuesdays. So, explore the official museum websites.  Day 3: Old Town And Classic Mexican Flavors If you want history with tacos (and who doesn’t), Old Town’s the move. Historic Park – Adobe houses, blacksmith demos, street performers! It’s half museum, half fair. Café Coyote – Fresh tortillas, large plates, and a fun vibe make Café Coyote a must-visit. Shops – Skip fridge magnets and choose handmade pottery, woven stuff, and jewelry, instead. Local tip: Late afternoon is the mariachi time, and it is super festive.  Day 4: Hiking And Outdoor Escapes Beaches are cool, but don’t skip the trails. San Diego has legit nature spots. Torrey Pines – Wild trees, epic ocean views, trails that make you stop mid-step just to gawk. Check closures before you go. Cowles Mountain – Moderate climb, great views from the top. You’ll feel like you earned your tacos. Mission Trails Park – Huge, less touristy. Lots of trails, chill atmosphere. Old Mission Dam is a simple stroll. Local tip: Sunrise hikes. Cooler, quieter, better. Day 5: San Diego Bay And A Boat Tour Different vibe today—see the city from the water. USS Midway – Enormous. Even just standing outside, you’ll be like, wow. Seaport Village – Cute, a little touristy, but good for wandering and snacks. San Diego Boat Tour – A harbor cruise is an affordable way to see the city from the water. You will pass under the Coronado Bridge, glide by the naval base, and take in the skyline from a fresh angle.  Some tours even spot dolphins along the way. If you want a more relaxing San Diego Bay tour with a fun island vibe, Tiki Time Bay Tours is one of the best choices. Their tiki-style boats create a laid-back atmosphere that is perfect for unwinding on the water. Local tip: Evening cruises can be cheaper. Plus, lights on the water are underrated. Day 6: Neighborhoods And Local Life This day’s all about vibes. Little Italy – You will find food everywhere, including good coffee, murals, and a farmers' market if you’re lucky. North Park – The North Park is artsy with craft beer and the vintage shops being the main attractions. Explore North Park in the afternoon. Ocean Beach – It is very chill and exudes a hippie-surfer energy. End with tacos by the pier. Day 7: Scenic Drives And A Relaxed Farewell Enjoy the last day of your trip in San Diego. You don’t need to do too much planning.  Pacific Coast Highway – Drive north, stop whenever the view makes you. (It’ll be often.) Coronado Island – Wide beach, fancy hotel, little cafes! It’s postcard-perfect but relaxed. Sunset Picnic – Grab snacks and sit on a blanket at Sunset Cliffs or Coronado. End the trip slowly and soak in the moments. Local tip: Locals picnic at the beach all the time. Join in. Wrapping Up Your San Diego Week Seven days later, you get why people rave about this place. You’ve seen beaches, trails, food spots, historic stuff, and neighborhoods, all with that laid-back SoCal vibe.  And the thing is that you didn’t even cover it all.
