Park your car at the Tenorio Volcano National Park lot at 8:15, and the trail to the Rio Celeste waterfall is yours, shared with birds and a few early hikers. The tour vans from La Fortuna and Guanacaste don't start pulling in until around 10 a.m. And that gap of nearly 2 hours is the best reason to drive yourself. Geography is the second reason. Rio Celeste lies in quiet farm country between the Arenal area and Guanacaste, near the small towns of Bijagua and Katira, with only one park entrance. But public transport barely reaches it (from the park you'd have to take a taxi to Upala, then catch a bus toward Ciudad Quesada). With a rental car, it turns into a relaxed morning stop on a day you'd be on the road anyway. Which road from La Fortuna, Liberia, or San José? Leaving La Fortuna, you head toward El Tanque on Route 142 and then join Route 4. You'll stay on Route 4 northbound for about 40 km, past San Rafael de Guatuso, until a park sign appears at Samen. Turn left there. The paved road runs about 19 km through Maquencal and the village of Rio Celeste, and the entrance sits on your left just after a bridge over the river (look down while you cross, because on a good day the water is already pale blue under you). Waze and Google Maps both get this one wrong. Near San Rafael de Guatuso, they'll try to turn you left off Route 4 onto an older road, and you should simply ignore them and carry on to Samen, where the pavement begins. Coming from Liberia, Route 1 (the Inter-American Highway) takes you south. Roughly 6 km short of Cañas, exit, go under the highway, and pick up Route 6 toward Upala. Route 6 is good asphalt for the 22 km or so to Bijagua. Once in town, the park sign tells you to turn right, and from there the side road is paved right up to the entrance. It's steep in spots, though; it turns slick once it rains, and you'll cross a couple of one-lane bridges where whoever is already on the bridge has the right of way. What about San José and SJO airport? Plan on about 3.5 hours, which is why most people landing at SJO slot Rio Celeste into the drive from Arenal to the Guanacaste beaches. Those days are gone. Both approaches are paved now, and neither one requires a 4x4. But a 4x4 can still earn its keep. That Bijagua climb is exactly the sort of wet, steep pavement where a compact SUV with decent ground clearance feels a lot calmer than a small sedan, and the potholes multiply in September and October, the 2 wettest months of the year. And if Rio Celeste is just one stop on a bigger loop with gravel elsewhere, rent for the roughest road on your itinerary rather than for this one. Flying into Liberia makes things simple, since you can collect the car at the airport and drive straight south toward Bijagua. Jumbo Car has an office near LIR with a free shuttle from the terminal. Its quoted prices already include the mandatory insurance, and cancellation is free up to 24 hours before pick-up. The main lot next to the ranger station is large, overflow spaces sit across the road, and attendants keep an eye on the cars (still, leave nothing in sight). But before you plan a whole day around the waterfall, check whether you can see it. In August 2025 a landslide buried the bottom of the 250 steps leading down to the falls. As of early 2026 the lower stairs and the viewing platform hadn't reopened, which meant you only got a view from partway down. Look at the SINAC site and recent visitor reports during the week before your trip. The trail and how long it takes You leave the ranger station on a flat paved path that turns to gravel after about 15 minutes. After that it's ordinary dirt trail, with a stream to cross and a few short, steep pitches, and roughly 30 minutes in you're standing at the top of the waterfall stairs. The falls drop about 90 meters into a deep blue pool. A lot of people see that and head back. And that's a fair choice, because the second half is rougher going, all roots, mud and steep climbs and descents. It takes you past the Poza Azul pool, then the Borbollones, where the water bubbles and you'll catch a whiff of sulfur. It ends at Los Teñideros, the spot where two clear rivers meet and the water goes blue. Is it worth the extra slog? If you have the legs and the time, yes, since the color change is the reason the river has its name. There's no loop. The trail stops at Los Teñideros and you retrace your steps, so budget 1 to 2 hours if you only want the waterfall and 3 to 4 hours for the full trail. Wear shoes you're happy to throw away afterward. This flank of the volcano gets heavy rain, and the mud on the far section will pull a sneaker clean off your foot. When the water is bluest December to April is your window if you have any choice. Rain stirs sediment into the river, and a few wet days in a row turn that turquoise into something dull and milky. Stuck with the rainy season? Then go the morning after a dry night, never the afternoon after a storm. The hour you show up counts too, though for other reasons. Get there at 8 or 8:30 a.m. and you're ahead of the tour buses that roll in around 10 a.m., walking in cooler air (the low 70s °F early on). And because last entry is 2 p.m., an early start leaves enough daylight to drive on to Liberia or back to La Fortuna without doing the gravel stretches in the dark. But the lower stairs and the waterfall viewing platform stayed shut after a landslide in 2025, so look at the SINAC page again a day or two before you go. Can you swim in the Rio Celeste? Law enforcement might issue a ticket for parking in the no-parking zone, so stay aware of it!  By Bus Skagit Valley transient services have several routes across the valley. If you arrive in Mount Vernon, you can ride the Skagit Transit Route 615 to visit the tulip fields. All of the transports depart from the Skagit Valley Station.  By Train  Amtrak Cascades travels to Mount Vernon. However, there is no shuttle available from the station. Long-haul flights are dreadful.  The stark, urbane terminals and the long nights of tiresome, cram-y seating sure work you up just thinking about it.  The flights that roll over to the next morning always have some drama up their sleeves. Then came the rescue team from Taiwan- EVA Air, which is currently one of the 10 Skytrax 5-star airlines in the world.  Would you believe it if I told you it was little known even up until a few years back?  It was founded in 1989. However, I started hearing about this flight in the early 1990s. My extended family would talk about this new carrier with non-stop flights on B747-400 jets.  Back then, it sounded like a story from another realm. I would hear them talk about the aroma of delicious noodles when woken up from sleep by a flight attendant as a late-night snack.  I also heard of the very non-conforming Sanrio aircraft that were Hello Kitty Jets, decked out completely from the headrests to the meal cutlery. Everything featured the widely adored character. I finally had the chance to board it.  The most exciting part was the all-new cabin category between the economy and the EVA Air business class.  This change was surprisingly affordable, and I was willing to upgrade for my 14+ hour flight home. Here, I am going to share my experience of flying from New York to Taipei.  Stay tuned because you are about to find out the hype behind EVA Air flights and a pretty up-close EVA Air Premium Economy review. The Beginning Of EVA Air Premium Economy The press releases from the airline say that EVA Air's first trans-Pacific debut took place on December 12, 1992.  It had four cabins, which was a first at that time.  The four cabins included Super First, Super Deluxe, Economy Deluxe, and Economy.  With Economy Deluxe, the airline became the first to introduce an improved economy cabin that is the Economy Deluxe. It became a benchmark for the airline, as most others took two to three decades to introduce this cabin to their list of offerings.  Recently (last summer), KLM debuted its premium economy.  The seat prices are reasonable with business class-like perks.  My Taipei experience was very endearing to me because of its convenient pairing of high quality and affordability.  The street food, the stationery, and the convenience stores all added to my love for Taipei.  The EVA Air flight was a big cherry on top because all of that now comes in an aircraft. A New Version 30 Years Later Image Source: www.evaair.com Three decades since its first flight, I booked the Premium Economy class for my way back to Taipei from NYC.  The perks of this flight began even before I boarded it.  This airline offers free shuttles from 2 Pennsylvania locations and 5 New Jersey locations to JFK Airport.  Dallas to Houston Airport also offers a free shuttle service.  It has successfully removed one of the biggest issues of international travel, which is simply getting to the airport. I took a $20 Uber to the Jersey City stop, which would have otherwise been a $130 Uber ride all the way to the airport. Being a part of the Star Alliance, I was granted access to the lounge with my United Gold status.  It allowed me to upgrade my boarding from Zone 4 to Zone 1.  As soon as I got into the cabin, it felt luxurious.  They used sweet endearments with my name in Mandarin.  They helped me settle into my seat and confirmed my meal selection, which I had previously made online. The seats had a 2-4-2 arrangement, and I had managed to secure a front-row seat, which meant no under-seat coverage but plenty of leg space.  On my seat, there were slippers, a water bottle, noise-canceling headphones, and a cozy blanket that felt like a cloud.  The blanket was quilted on one surface and had faux fur on the opposite side. How It Went An attendant soon came and gave me an overnight bag. It was a Kipling amenity kit consisting of Hudson Made New York products. It had the brand’s trademark monkey keychain with a scene of Taiwan’s Yilan on the bag. My entire EVA Air flight felt like a warm, pampering session with juice, fruits, and snacks while suspended at 30,000 feet mid-air. The breakfast was amazing, with Chinese-style scallop congee with egg & Chinese sausage. There was an option for another Western version that comprised smoked turkey accompanied by cheddar cheese. There was also a “leisure delight” meal in between the meals with a BBQ chicken-filled brioche roll. The restrooms were clean, and I can say so because I went three times, and it was clean each time. To clarify, I took a private plane recently that got filthy by the last hour of the flight, which was one-third the duration of the EVA Air flight. When I took the return journey, I wanted to take things further, getting myself the business-class name Royal Laurel. It featured 6.5-foot-long lie-flat seats, a retractable armrest, a cocktail table, and a shoe cabinet. This cabin had a 1-2-1 configuration with dated seats compared to other airlines. EVA Air raised the bar, however, with their Rimowa & Salvatore Ferragamo branded care kit and a complimentary Jason Wu pajama set. All the passengers ended up wearing it, and I, too, could not resist it. I wore it all the way home. The plaid duvet was so snug and comfy I asked where I could buy one. At one point, I fell asleep and dreamt of those noodles. But it was not my dream… they did bring noodles in between our slumber, and it just completed the experience all around. Planning Your Own EVA Air Flight: Practical Booking Tips My Premium Economy experience has you eyeing an EVA Air booking of your own. So, a little planning goes a long way toward getting the best value out of the cabin.  Here is what is worth knowing before you check out. Premium Economy Vs. Economy Deluxe: What You Are Really Paying For EVA Air's Premium Economy typically runs 60-90% more than standard Economy. However, it was noticeably less than Business.  On most long-haul routes, including New York to Taipei, that upgrade buys you a wider seat with more recline and legroom. You will also get a dedicated check-in and boarding lane, priority baggage handling, and an enhanced meal service. You will also get a larger baggage allowance (often two checked bags instead of one).  If your flight is under six hours, the gap in comfort is harder to justify. On anything over eight hours, most travelers find the difference well worth the extra cost. It is especially true if you are transiting through Taipei Taoyuan (TPE) for a connecting flight and want to arrive rested. Star Alliance Perks And Baggage Allowances Worth Knowing EVA Air is a Star Alliance member. So, any status you hold with United, Air Canada, Singapore Airlines, or another alliance carrier carries over to your EVA Air booking.  Gold-level status and above typically unlocks lounge access, priority boarding, and extra baggage allowance even on an Economy Deluxe fare. So, it is worth linking your frequent flyer number at the time of booking rather than after the fact.  If you don't hold status, EVA Air's own Infinity MileageLands program is free to join and still earns miles redeemable across the Star Alliance network. A Few Practical Notes For First-Time Flyers  A few practical notes for first-time flyers. Book directly through evaair.com or a trusted agent so your seat and meal preferences sync properly. You can request your meal at least 24 hours before departure if you need a special dietary option. Check whether your route offers the free ground-shuttle pickup points before booking a separate airport transfer.  Finally, if a long layover in Taipei is part of your itinerary, EVA Air passengers can often arrange a free stopover of a day or two.
