So, it is no wonder that with a 1.5% expected CAGR between 2024 and 2034, it is one of the topmost countries in dark tourism. The sites for dark tourism in USA are countless, covering almost all aspects, such as thanatourism, ghost tourism, warfare tourism, disaster tourism, etc. Here, I have picked places like Alcatraz Island, Alcatraz Prison, and Ed Gein’s Farm Houses that will offer you the most unusual experience. So, it’s time to be a dark tourist in the USA! THESE Are The Best Dark Tourism In USA Destinations  The USA has probably experienced the most significant human tragedy in the 21st century. It was 11th September 2001, and the hijacked Flight 11 and Flight 175 struck the Twin Towers, taking the lives of 2977 people.  The 9/11 Memorial & Museum was built after 11 years of this devastating incident. It was a tribute to the survivors of the 9/11 attack and the terrorist attacks of 26h February 1993. It also marked the anniversary of the end of the recovery and rescue work of the 9/11 devastation.  Today, it is one of the biggest draws for dark tourism in the USA. But what about the other sites that are drenched in tragedy, paranormal acts, history, and more? Let’s explore them! 1. Alcatraz Island And Alcatraz Prison Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary, or Alcatraz Prison, was one of the most infamous prisons in the history of America. They were executed, registering one of the most brutal incidents of American Colonial History.  Recently, the city has owned its history of the 1692 Witch Trial and emerged as a hub of paranormal tourism. The Historical Sites of Salem  The city has preserved its colonial buildings and structures well. Even the cobblestone streets of the city's historic district have a unique charm.  A walk through these streets is an experience for any dark academia enthusiast or a dark tourist interested in American Colonial History.  Modern Wiccan Community And The Acceptance Of Various Belief Systems As the place of the Witch Hunt of 1692, Salem has attracted many Pagan and Wiccan Communities across the globe.  Today, the city practices and promotes tolerance of various religious beliefs and practices. Gettysburg National Military Park Gettysburg National Military Park is one of the rarest dark tourism destinations in the USA, and it is a place of history, haunted stories, and ghost tours.  The Gettysburg National Military Park is associated with the Battle of Gettysburg, one of the most important battles of the American Civil War. The three-day-long 1863 battle from July 1st to 3rd led to the loss of around 6000 human lives.  What Happened At The Battle Of Gettysburg? The Battle of Gettysburg was a major conflict between the  Confederate Army of Northern Virginia and the Union Army of the Potomac.  General Robert E. Lee led the Confederate Army, and General George G. Meade led the Union Army. The Union Army grabbed victory in the battle, which was the biggest blow to the Confederate Clan.  5. Ed Gein’s Farmhouse Ed Gein’s farmhouse in Wisconsin was witness to the heinous acts of serial killers in the 1950s. Gein was obsessed with his mother, and his ultimate aim was to make a skinsuit to quasi-resurrect her.  His heinous acts include killing women and making household items using their body parts. When police searched Ed Gein’s farmhouse, they found a sofa made of human skin, a lampshade made of human face, and many other disturbing stuff.  The deeds of Ed Gein have inspired many films and documentaries, and his farmhouse today is a popular place for dark tourism in USA. The next destination I am going to discuss is related to him. Richard Ramirez was a guest of The Cecil Hotel in Los Angeles, and it was also the location of many mysterious deaths. As a popular dark tourism spot, the Cecil Hotel and its storied halls give visitors goosebumps. It’s captivating, indeed!  8. Ground Zero Ground Zero, or the World Trade Center Site, is one of the topmost sites for dark tourism in USA. The World Trade Center was a commercial complex spanning 16 acres in lower Manhattan. The 9/11 attack in 2001 crashed it into dust as two hijacked planes struck the Twin Towers.  Al-Qaeda, an Islamic Extremist Group founded by Osama bin Laden, was behind this attack and the greatest human tragedy of modern times. As I have mentioned, 2977 people lost their lives in this incident.  Today, the place is important for dark tourism in USA for its educational and historical value. It is also a place to reflect upon the lives lost and how America has risen from this tragedy. It shows the grit and excellence of America as a nation.  What To Do At Ground Zero As A Dark Tourist? Visit the 9/11 Memorial dedicated to the victims. Spend some time near the 9/11 Survivor Tree. Walk through the 9/11 Memorial Glade. Visit the 9/11 Museum. Pay a visit to Saint Paul's Chapel. Further, these formations cast the longest shadow during the Sunset, giving you a chill down the spine.  Further, the ridges and canyons here tell tales of ancient tribes who lived here. The wind rustling through the ridges sounds like the ancestors' whispers from a bygone era. Moreover, you will lose count of the time in this most beautiful, desolate land.  10. Area 51, Nevada Are you a fan of conspiracy theories? Area 51 in Nevada will be the best dark tourism in USA destination for you. The mystery of this place revolves around the tales of extraterrestrials found here.  For the dark tourists, it is a place of intrigue related to military secrets and alien attacks (?).  11. Kennedy took place. Simon Wiesenthal was a holocaust survivor, and his human rights organization, the Simon Wiesenthal Center, built this museum.  This museum has many exhibits recording the most notorious stories of intolerance worldwide. To start with, there are architectural marvels in Europe. Alongside there are fantastic natural settings like the Giant’s Causeway in Ireland.  I always feel ecstatic when I’m on a Europe trip. I bet all travelers feel the same way. But I admit, it is impossible to cover all spectacular locations simultaneously. So, you must sort out some of the finest places you can cover in your trip.  Firstly, choose accessible locations. Secondly, go for connecting destinations to smooth and streamline your trip. Let me help you spot the most exciting places you must cover on your coming Europe trip.  1. Eiffel Tower – Paris, France What could be a better location to start your Europe trip? I was mesmerized by the seamless Roman architecture and engineering marvel when I visited the place. There’s a story oozing out from every wall you touch.  If you are imaginative like me, you might still hear the buzz of swords clanking, crowds rumbling, and the mercury rising.  When I last visited Rome, they had a Colosseum super saver offer on ticket options. Acropolis – Athens, Greece Are you a fan of Greek history and aesthetics? Then, nothing would seem more appealing than a trip to Athens. I paid for a trip to Acropolis last year. So, I will keep it on my list. Above all, it is worth visiting if it’s your first time in Greece.  However, Acropolis is no super-structure to amaze you. Instead, it is a cluster of temples in ruins and surrounding civilization. The place is 512 feet above the sea level.  I liked the Parthenon more than anything here. My PoV is the best sample of the inspiring Greek architecture. You should also know that sunrise or sunset is the best time to visit the place. The place is wrapped in marbles.  The place emits a serene glow when the lush golden streaks of sunlight fall on them. It’s the same, both times of the day.  4. Buckingham Palace – London, England While many associate Buckingham Palace with the British monarchy, it’s more than just a royal residence—it’s a cultural landmark.  On my first Europe trip, I covered Buckingham Palace. I feel all travelers should also do the same. The Guard ceremony is something you can't miss. Plus, there is a lot more to do here. Strolling around the palace gardens or admiring the grand façade feels special. Ithinkl that’s the best part about the European Landmarks. Most places are scenic and seem like an extension of nature.  What I liked the most was the regal British aura inside the palace.  5. La Sagrada Familia – Barcelona, Spain One of my favorite European Landmarks is Barcelona. True, I haven’t covered Spain yet. But I can say from my research that The La Sagrada Familia is the place to be, if you are in Barcelona.  I hope you also know about the legendary Antoni Gaudi, who designed the La Sagrada Familia. If you love aesthetics and found Athens praise-worthy, you will definitely love it here.  Usually, ticket prices don’t vary. But prices may be slightly higher during the carnivals. The baseline- thecoste of tickets will vary between 29 to 49 Euros. But one thing, the place is not free for children. Tickets for them could range between 20 to 42 Euros.  From what the visitors say, you need 2 hours to explore the space entirely. I am also eager to visit Barcelona and be here. The spires and the stained glasses primarily draw me. But it’s not the windows only. The complex facades also appeal to me.  6. Neuschwanstein Castle – Bavaria, Germany Straight out of a fairytale, Neuschwanstein Castle is as enchanting as it gets. Nestled in the Bavarian Alps, it inspired Disney’s Sleeping Beauty Castle, and it’s easy to see why.  The combination of its romantic architecture and stunning natural backdrop creates a magical experience. For the best view, hike up to Marienbrücke Bridge—you won’t regret it. 7. Grand Canal – Venice, Italy Venice feels like a living museum, but the Grand Canal is the show's star. Gliding along in a gondola or Vaporetto offers a unique perspective of the city’s architecture, bridges, and colorful buildings.  Each corner of the canal tells a story, whether a grand palazzo or a bustling market. It’s a slice of Italy you’ll never forget. 8. Stonehenge – Wiltshire, England Stonehenge is one of Europe’s most mysterious landmarks. These ancient stones, arranged in a circular formation, puzzle historians.  Was it a calendar? A religious site?  Standing among the stones, you can’t help but feel a connection to the past. Visiting during the summer or winter solstice makes the experience even more atmospheric. 9. Charles Bridge – Prague, Czech Republic Spanning the Vltava River, Charles Bridge is a masterpiece of Gothic architecture. Lined with statues and offering stunning views of Prague Castle, it’s a dream for photographers and romantics alike.  Whether you visit at sunrise for a peaceful stroll or in the evening when it’s bustling with street performers, the bridge has an undeniable charm. 10. Plitvice Lakes National Park – Croatia Nature lovers, this one’s for you. Plitvice Lakes National Park is a paradise of cascading waterfalls, crystal-clear lakes, and lush greenery. Wooden walkways wind through the park, allowing you to explore its beauty up close.  The vibrant turquoise waters are almost surreal, making it feel like you’ve entered another world. Rio de Janeiro sweeps you up the moment you arrive. Golden beaches stretch for miles, samba rhythms spill from bars in Lapa, and cable cars glide up Sugarloaf Mountain for some of the best views on Earth.  Life here is colorful and fast-moving, and part of slipping into that rhythm is knowing how far your Brazilian real will take you - from a chair on Ipanema beach to a plate of feijoada in a neighborhood café. Before we go on, here is a quick Rio de Janeiro travel guide. Just a quick note: exchange rates and prices don’t stay still. At the moment, 1 US dollar equals about 5.4 Brazilian reais, but it’s best to check the latest rates and costs before you travel. Rio de Janeiro Travel Guide: What To Expect? Rio de Janeiro is one of the best cities you can explore. It is one of those few places that has a care-free energy and will make you feel alive. The beaches, food, and major attractions will draw you to it without even trying too hard. Here is a simple Rio de Janeiro travel guide. Beaches - Rio’s Living Rooms The beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema are more than postcards - they’re part of daily life. Locals jog along the promenade in the morning, families gather for a swim, and groups of friends set up for impromptu games of beach volleyball or footvolley. Starting from some humble bakeries to some fancy rooftop restaurants, Rio has it all. Start with breakfast like a local: pão de queijo (cheese bread) and strong coffee, often no more than R$10-15.  Step into a juice bar and you’ll find tropical flavors like passion fruit, guava, or the ever-popular açaí bowl, usually under R$20 for a generous portion. At lunchtime, the prato feito is king. This “set plate” of rice, beans, salad, and a protein such as beef, chicken, or fish costs R$25-35 and will keep you full all day.  You will get various self-service buffets that charge by weight. You will get roasted meats, vegetables, and farofa, and you will have to pay around R$30-40. For dinner, you can choose what you prefer. You can try something casual or something fancy. If you prefer a mid-range seafood meal along with drinks, it will cost somewhere around R$80-100 per person.  However, a proper night out in Ipanema at a fancy fine-dining spot might cost around R$200-250.  You can even visit Churrascarias, which is a Brazilian steakhouse. It is an event in itself. They have endless skewers of grilled meats, side dishes, and salad bars. You can expect to pay somewhere around R$120-180 per person. However, this does not include drinks. All these places accept cards, but it is better to keep some cash handy for bakeries and street food. Attractions: Big Names And Hidden Gems There are various major icons in Rio, and those are actually worth it. You can take the Sugarloaf Mountain cable car for around R$150, and the ride itself is a major part of the thrill. The glass walls will give you a 360-degree view of the way from above the city. You can visit Christ the Redeemer, resting on Corcovado Mountain, for R$100. The moment you stand at its feet and see the city from there, you get an amazing view. You can carry cards as both attractions accept payment in cards. However, it is better to carry some cash for small vendors, tacos, or snacks. Rio is also filled with a lot of gems that you can see for free or for a low cost.  The Selarón Steps, covered in colorful tiles from around the world, cost nothing to climb. A stroll through Santa Teresa’s narrow streets will take you past murals, studios, and cafés where you can pause for a R$12 espresso. At night, head to Lapa to experience samba at its source. Entry to some clubs is around R$30-50, and drinks inside range from R$15-25. Smaller bars may only accept cash, especially if you’re outside the main tourist drag. Getting Around Rio is quite a big city, but it is not difficult once you understand the system. You can take the metro, it's quite safe and clean, and a single ride costs around R$5.  Moreover, if you have a rechargeable RioCard, it will save you a lot of time and work. You will be able to use it for different types of transport, including trains and buses.  You can take a bus, which goes almost to the city, and the fare is quite similar to the metro. Here, you can get taxis for around R$6, and cross-town trips generally range around R$40-60. Also, Uber and other apps like these are popular, and often offer rides at a cheaper rate than a taxi. If you want, you can pay in-app with the card, and that way, you will not have to use cash for payment.  For day-trips outside the city, you will get intercity buses. This will help you explore the outskirts within a budget. If you are planning to visit the historic mountain town, Petropolis, you can explore it for around R$40-50. Moreover, if you are planning to take a longer ride to Búzios, the beach town, you will be able to visit it for around R$70-80. You can get the bus tickets online or from the bus station as well.  How Much To Budget You need to prepare a budget for a trip. However, the budget depends on the kind of trip you want to have. Budget travel: It will cost you around R$200-250 for a day, including hostels, street food, public transport, and free attractions. Mid-range: It will cost you around R$600. You will get comfortable hotels, visit some of the major landmarks, and have some casual as well as sit-down meals. High comfort: This will cost you around R$1000 and above. You will get four-star hotels, fine dining, and guided tours at this range.  However, the prices in Rio rise during any carnival or New Year’s, and this also varies depending on the neighborhood.  Ipanema and Copacabana are some of the premium places that tourists visit, but there are some block islands that will offer the same charm but at a lower price range. Spend Smart In Rio Start your trip with at least a little Brazilian real in your wallet. It will cover your first taxi or ride-share, snacks, or that first fresh coconut without delay. From there, cards will carry most of your expenses, but having R$100-200 in cash each day is wise for small payments. Stick to ATMs inside banks or malls when you need to withdraw. They’re safer and usually give fair rates. Avoid exchanging money at the airport - the rates are often poor, and the fees stack up quickly. Think about how you balance cash and cards. Use your card for hotels, restaurants, and tours, and keep your reais for buses, bakeries, street snacks, and tips. It’s a system that works well in Rio and lets you move through the city without stress.
