Hambantota is in the news these days for the launch of Phase II of the flagship human-elephant conflict initiative, Save Ali Pancha.  This is a partnership between the Hambantota International Port (HIP), the Wildlife and Nature Protection Society of Sri Lanka (WNPS), and the Department of Wildlife Conservation (DWC).  The China Merchants Foundation (CMF) has funded the new phase of the project. Also, it will support the rehabilitation of the orphaned elephants in the Elephant Transit Home (ETH) of the Udawalawe National Park.  However, on the southern coast of Sri Lanka, Hambantota, in the truest sense, is the place where nature, age-old heritage, and modern amenities meet.  In this article, I will share my experience in Hambantota with a special focus on its top attractions and things to do.  Where Is Hambantota? Hambantota is on the southeastern coast of Sri Lanka. It has a semi-arid coastal climate and scorching summers.   Furthermore, it is at a distance of around 240 km from Colombo.  Also, the deep maritime port of Hambantota, along the major shipping route, is between the Suez Canal and the Malacca Straits.  How To Reach Hambantota? Hambantota is well-connected to the rest of Sri Lanka through the Beliatta Railway Station and Weerawila International Airport. The Beliatta Railway Station is at a distance of 35 km, and the airport is just 20 km away.  You can even fly to Dickwella or Koggala airstrips from different parts of Sri Lanka and then travel the distance by road.  Nevertheless, here is how you can travel to Hambantota from Colombo.  1. Colombo To Hambantota By Air You can take a flight to Weerawila International Airport from the Colombo Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB).  Cinnamon Air is the main operator on this route, and the travel time is around 1 hour and 30 minutes. Moreover, the ticket price is between LKR 15000 and 130000 based on the season and time of the flight booking.  From the Weerawila International Airport, you have to take a private car or taxi to Hambantota. The travel time is around 30 minutes, and the cost is around LKR 2500.  2. Colombo To Hambantota By Train The 8056 Express Train runs directly from Colombo to Hambantota.  The train leaves the Colombo Fort Railway Station at 2:40 PM and reaches the Beliatta Railway Station at 6:47 PM.  Also, the ticket price for this train ride is LKR 1600.  3. By Bus And Taxi The National Transport Commission (NTC) of Sri Lanka runs buses from Colombo Bastian Mawatha Bus Terminal to Embilipitiya.  The normal bus fare on this route is LKR 333, and the semi-luxury bus ticket costs LKR 416.  Buses are available every 20 minutes, and the travel time is around 5 hours and 5 minutes.  Furthermore, from Embilipitiya, you can take a taxi or a pre-booked cab to Hambantota. The travel time will be around 45 minutes, and the travel cost will be around LKR 1600 to 2000.  4. Colombo To Hambantota Via Matara This mode of transportation involves two stretches of bus journeys and 1 stretch of taxi/cab ride.  The first stretch is the Colombo Fort to Hambantota bus ride.  The NTC bus ride takes around 2 hours and 35 minutes, and the ticket price is LKR 315 for normal services, LKR 393 for semi-luxury buses, and LKR 525 for luxury buses. Then, from Matara, you can take a Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB ICT) bus to reach Tangalle in around 40 minutes.  Finally, from Tangalle, you can take a taxi to reach Hambantota within 1 hour. The cost will be around LKR 4500.   Why Is Hambantota Famous? Hambantota, with an ancient maritime history, has always been hailed for its strategic location.  Even today, it is an important geopolitical flashpoint due to its location near the busiest East-west shipping lanes.  However, with its routes going back to the ancient Kingdom of Ruhuna, Hambantota is more than a maritime hotspot.  It is also known for its rich biodiversity with the Bundala National Park, Ridiyagama Safari Park, Birds Research Centre and Resort, etc.  On the other hand, it is home to the Mahinda Rajapaksha International Cricket Stadium, one of the most celebrated international cricket venues in the world.  So, here are the details you need to know.  1. Bundala National Park This UNESCO biosphere reserve protects over 200 bird species alongside elephants and crocodiles. It features vast wetlands and coastal lagoons. Hours: 6:00 AM – 6:00 PM. Fees: 3,000 LKR per person, plus 5,000 LKR per jeep. 2. Ridiyagama Safari Park Spanning 500 acres, this open-concept park allows visitors to see global wildlife like lions and giraffes via bus tours. Hours: 8:30 AM – 5:00 PM. Fees: 1,000 LKR per person, plus 300 LKR per bus or 200 LKR per bike. 3. Birds Research Centre And Resort An eco-friendly conservation site offering guided walks and boat rides to observe regional avian species like eagles and peacocks. Hours: 7:00 AM – 7:00 PM. Fees: 1,000 LKR per person, plus 2,000 LKR per boat ride. 4. Mirijjawila Botanic Garden This expansive 300-acre garden showcases the rich plant diversity of Sri Lanka, including specialized herbal and spice sectors. Hours: 7:30 AM – 5:00 PM. Fees: 500 LKR per person, plus 100 LKR per bike. 5. Agro Technology Park A unique venue displaying modern agricultural innovations like hydroponics and solar energy, complete with product tastings and workshops. Hours: 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM. Fees: 500 LKR per person, plus 1,000 LKR per workshop. 6. Walawe River Safari A scenic two-hour boat ride providing close encounters with river crocodiles, water birds, and traditional local fishing villages. Hours: 6:00 AM – 6:00 PM. Fees: around 5,000 LKR per boat. 7. Mulkirigala Rock Temple Perched on a high rock, this ancient complex features seven cave temples, historic murals, and a giant reclining Buddha. Hours: 6:00 AM – 6:00 PM. Fees: 500 LKR per person. 8. Ramba Viharaya Dating to the 2nd century BC, this historic temple complex holds an ancient stupa, secluded caves, and an artifact museum. Hours: 6:00 AM – 6:00 PM. Fees: 500 LKR per person. 9. Ussangoda National Park Known for its distinctive red soil and coastal cliffs, this park provides archaeological ruins and stunning panoramic sunset ocean views. Hours: 6:00 AM – 6:00 PM. Fees: 500 LKR per person, plus 100 LKR per bike. 10. Dry Zone Botanic Gardens A 300-acre sanctuary showcasing dry-zone flora, including cacti, succulents, and medicinal plants, alongside a dedicated orchid house. Hours: 7:30 AM – 5:00 PM. Fees: 500 LKR per person, plus 100 LKR per bike. 11. Mahapelessa Hot Springs Natural thermal springs renowned for their traditional healing properties, nestled within a relaxing landscape surrounded by local vendor stalls. Hours: 6:00 AM – 6:00 PM. Mahinda Rajapaksha International Cricket Stadium With a capacity to accommodate 35000 spectators, the Mahinda Rajapaksha International Cricket Stadium is the second-largest cricket venue in the country.  It was built during the Cricket World Cup of 2011. Along with exploring the top attractions that I have mentioned previously, Hambantota is also famous for bathing and unwinding in its Mahapelessa or Madunagala Hot Springs.  You can even have the basic wildlife experience with the Walawe River Safari. And, finally, I arrived at  Nuwara Eliya, a small city at an altitude of 1,889 meters. It is also called "Little England,” a term left over from the time of the British. It is a surreal combination of red-brick Victorian post offices and Tudor-style homes. Furthermore, it has a setting for the extremes of dramatic waterfalls and successive mountain peaks.  This misty highland getaway should not be left out of your Sri Lanka travels, whether you are into the history of buildings, enjoy areas with natural beauty, or have an appreciation for tea. Damro Labookellie Tea Centre  It is the largest tea Centre in the country and is also one of the oldest.  The journey to the estate is an experience in itself. Natural Wonders: Parks And Waterfalls  Nuwara Eliya has abundant water and lush greenery.  The combination of high elevation and significant rainfall results in an environment that stands out distinctly from the rest of the island.   Victoria Park   This park, named to commemorate Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee, is arguably the most well-preserved park in South Asia.  It serves as a haven for bird enthusiasts seeking to spot rare species such as the Indian Blue Robin and the Pied Thrush.  During the spring months (March to May), the park bursts forth with vibrant colors as roses and dahlias reach their peak bloom.   Gregory Lake   Initially constructed to produce electricity for the town, Gregory Lake has transformed into the city's main recreational area.  Visitors can rent swan-shaped pedal boats, go jet skiing, or enjoy a pony ride along the shoreline.  The pathway along the lake has small chalets offering street food, making it an ideal location for a late-afternoon walk as the mist gently settles over the water. Lovers Leap Waterfall Accessible via a short hike through the tea estates, Lovers Leap is a 30-meter waterfall with a tragic legend.  Folklore tells of a royal prince and his lover who leapt from the top to remain together forever.  Today, it provides a serene escape and a panoramic view of the town below. 4. Enjoy The High-Altitude Adventure: Horton Plains   No visit to Nuwara Eliya is truly complete without spending a day at Horton Plains National Park.  This UNESCO World Heritage site is a tranquil, windswept plateau situated roughly an hour's drive from the city.   World’s End  The highlight of the 9-kilometer circuit hike within the park is World’s End, where the plateau suddenly drops off, plunging nearly 880 meters straight down.  On a clear day, the breathtaking view stretches all the way to the southern coastline.  Pro Tip: It's essential to reach the park entrance by 6:00 AM. By 9:30 AM, a thick "curtain of mist" typically descends and obscures the scenery.   Baker’s Falls   During the same hiking loop, you'll come across Baker’s Falls, named after the renowned explorer Sir Samuel Baker.  This waterfall has unique ferns and rhododendrons around, providing a refreshing, misty break amid your trek. 5. Local Flavors And Markets   Although the hotels serve sophisticated British cuisine, the heart of Nuwara Eliya’s food culture lies within its markets.   The Bale Bazaar   Locally referred to as the "Winter Market," this spot is ideal for finding quality cold-weather clothing, such as jackets, sweaters, and scarves, at affordable prices.  Given the significantly cooler climate compared to the rest of Sri Lanka, the market is essential for both locals and tourists who may not be prepared for the chill. Adma Agro Strawberry Farm   Nuwara Eliya stands out as the only region in Sri Lanka that successfully cultivates strawberries.  At Adma Agro, visitors can indulge in fresh strawberries with cream, strawberry pancakes, or thick milkshakes while enjoying a view of the greenhouse rows.  This experience is a defining treat of Nuwara Eliya. Remember These Practical Tips Before Trying The Things To Do In Nuwara Eliya  The ideal time to go is between February and April.  The city is especially vibrant in April as it celebrates the Sinhalese and Tamil New Year.  During this month, the city features horse races, flower exhibitions, and car races. Just be ready for larger crowds and increased prices during this peak season. Furthermore, Nuwara Eliya is the coldest place in Sri Lanka, and the nighttime temperatures can drop to 10°C. Yes, Hello Kitty Shinkansen is going to get discontinued in Japan. Now, during my last trip to Japan, a ride in this themed bullet train was surely my pookie moment.  It was an experience of a lifetime when I tried the best Osaka food and boarded the Hello Kitty Shinkansen train for a day trip to Kobe, Himeji, Okayama, Kurashiki, and Hiroshima.  However, JR West has decided to stop the operations of the Hello Kitty Shinkansen from 17th May 2026.  Now, it’s sad for everyone who loves Japanese culture. If the Japanese shrines and temples are the telltale of its history, religion, and society, the Hello Kitty Shinkansen has been a poster of the pop culture.  So, in this article, I will discuss how the beautiful 8-year-old journey of the Hello Kitty Shinkansen is going to come to an end, and what you can expect in the few days left until the last date of operation.  Hello Kitty Shinkansen: An Iconic Symbol Of Japanese Railway Branding  Hello Kitty Shinkasen started running on the Sanyō Shinkansen line on 30th June, 2018. It used to run from Shin-Osaka to Hakata (Fukuoka).  Furthermore, during this 8-year run, this themed bullet train has successfully served its purpose of reviving tourism in Japan.  Moreover, the Hello Kitty Shinkasen used 500-series bullet trains and featured the signature white-and-pink colors.  Also, the exterior was adorned with bows, the signature of Hello Kitty.  However, for the train, the bow represented a link between the cities on the route covered.  The Decor Which Made The Hello Kitty Shinkansen So Special Out of eight cars of the Hello Kitty Shinkansen, the decor of the first two cars was based on the theme.  Furthermore, the Hello Plaza in Car 1 was dedicated to exhibitions. ROOM,” was decorated in the style of Hello Kitty. The chairs, the wall art, and the ceiling were done accordingly.  Moreover, there was a photo area.  The rest of the carriage was like a normal bullet train, with subtle hints of the Hello Kitty theme.  Also, a unique melody was used for the announcement.  How Is The Farewell Event Of Hello Kitty Shinkansen Being Planned?  JR West is going to plan a series of commemorative events to bid farewell to this iconic bullet train.  As a passenger, you can leave a message on the board reserved for sharing memories. Furthermore, you can get stickers and limited edition souvenirs in the memory of the train.  Moreover, you can collect special merchandise from the Kyoto Railway Museum and specific JR West Stores. You will even find them online.  Having said that, there is still a month left for the Hello Kitty Shinkansen to get discontinued. Hiroshima-Yamaguchi Area Pass With this pass, you can enjoy an unlimited ride between Fukuoka and Yamaguchi. The ropeway took me on a ride over the Nunobiki Waterfall and the beautiful Kobe Herb Garden.  It dropped us at the Observation Park, and as the name suggests, it offers amazing views of the city.  However, you can even take a local train to the city.  2. Himeji The Himeji Castle is one of the twelve original castles in Japan. The Atomic Bomb Dome and the Peace Museum here remind you of the futility of war.  The Future Of Themed Bullet Trains In Japan  As a tourist or a cultural enthusiast, you may think that the discontinuation of the Hello Kitty Shinkansen has put the future of the themed bullet trains in Japan at stake.  However, that is not the case.  Japan has just got a new theme-based bullet train called Super Mario Shinkansen in 2025. Also, JR Kyushu runs this train in Kyushu.  As the name says, Super Mario Shinkansen has pictures of the main characters, Mario and Luigi.
