The wild heart of Katmai National Park harbors 14 active volcanoes. This national park of around 5 million acres surpasses the magnificence of the Grand Canyon National Park, and kayaking, canoeing, and hiking here are one-of-a-kind experiences.  One of the oldest national parks, Katmai National Park, was established in 1918. Novarupta Volcano eruption on 6th June 1912 was destructive, and preservation of the habitation around Mount Katmai was crucial.   The National Park Service website says,  “Lasting three days, the largest volcanic eruption of the twentieth century exploded June 6, 1912, from a new volcano, Novarupta. In the process, it created Katmai caldera and the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes. But why does it have so many volcanoes?  Volcanoes in the Aleutian volcanic arc and Katmai National Park are part of the Pacific Ring of Fire. “The Ring of Fire is home to 75% of the world's volcanoes and 90% of its earthquakes.” (Source)  Many call the Ring of Fire the Circum-Pacific Belt, and many tectonic plates meet here. Here is an excerpt from a report published on the 2006 volcanic eruption of Fourpeaked Volcano.   “On September 17, 2006 Fourpeaked Mountain, a glacier-clad stratovolcano with no known Holocene activity, produced a plume of steam, ash, and SO2, which rose to 6000 m above sea level. The plume was observed by eye-witnesses, seen on weather radar, and also appeared in SO2-sensitive satellite imagery. Concurrent with the plume, regional seismic stations recorded a swarm of volcano-tectonic earthquakes while an atmospheric infrasound signal was recorded 800 km away. Air and ground reconnaissance revealed a linear series of vigorously steaming vents in the summit glacier, stretching about 1 km down the north flank of the volcano.”  So, are you ready to know about the active and rugged volcanoes in Katmai National Park. The next section gives you a detailed overview.   Know The Volcanoes In Katmai National Park  Volcanoes erupt for a short span if you study the entire timetable of a volcano. However, the eruption is only the outcome of activities that take place for years or even centuries. Active for over 70,000 years, the two cones of Mount Katmai were beheaded due to the caldera collapse in 1912.    The eruptive products of Mount Katmai are varied in their compositions, including basalt and rhyodacite.   Mount Griggs  Mount Griggs, the tallest peak in the district, is 2,530 m tall. Despite having young lava flows, some of the deposits in Mount Griggs are 290,000 years old.   The volcano is still active and you will get to see the yellow sulfurous steam around its summit.   Trident Volcano  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5rQVsdsWsIA Trident Volcano is one of the older volcanoes in Katmai. From 1953 to 1974, Trident Volcano had many eruptions. However, the highest and the central volcanic cone of Trident Volcano has been lying dormant for around 10000 years.   Mount Mageik  Mount Mageik has four discrete eruptive centers covered with snow. However, glaciers have caused severe decay in three of these lava centers. It is a younger volcano in Katmai, with its lava aged between 4,000 and 93,000.   The last eruption of Mount Mageik happened 2500 years ago. It caused a crater between two Mount Mageik summits. Today, the crater is filled with an acid lake, exuding steam curls.   Alagogshak Volcano  Alagogshak stands at the southwesternmost corner of the Katmai volcanic cluster. It is also the oldest in the Katmai family of volcanoes. The lavas in this volcano are 40,000-680,000 years old.   Peak 6875, Snowy Mountain   Peak 6875 is a young dome made of dacite lava. The scoop-shaped peak looks like a natural amphitheater.    Spectacular Landscapes Created By Volcanic Activities In Katmai National Park   The volcanoes in Katmai have created some interesting landscapes, and their activities have encouraged geologists to explore the possibilities. Nonetheless, the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes is the most prominent volcanic landscape in Katmai.   It is the work of the largest volcanic eruption in the 20th century. The Novarupta Volcano eruption on 6th June 1912 created this valley.   There are various exciting destinations in the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes. For the geologists and people studying volcanoes, Novarupta is the ultimate destination. The dome causing the massive eruption in 1912 still carries warm steam.   It is also the most colorful place in the valley, thanks to its kaleidoscopic views caused by the deposition of ash, pumice, and other minerals.   Another popular destination in the valley is the Buttress Range Ridge. Here, you will catch a glimpse of the extensive wildlife in Katmai. So, this is about what traveling taught me! When I initially started traveling, it was merely to explore new places.   Stagnation could never provide what my soul was seeking. With travel experiences, I had a chance to explore an intimate relationship with myself.   Even before I realized what effect traveling has on my life, I knew that traveling was helping me be a better person.   This Is What Traveling Taught Me!   Getting back to where I began. My journeys over the years have helped me to look at myself a tad bit differently. I realized that when we fall in love with ourselves, we tend to accept ourselves unconditionally.  Here’s how I developed self-love and inclusivity out of my comfort zone. I am penning here the most personal experiences, and it’s okay if you see things in a different light.   Traveling helped me realize that my ‘weaknesses’ were only a part of my imagination  We all have certain assumptions about ourselves. We tend to think that we are ‘bad’ at certain things without even putting much effort into trying/doing/improving.   It was the same for me as well. I often thought that I had acute OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder). I also thought that I couldn’t share my stuff with strangers or live in a messy environment!  Gladly, it all turned out to be a myth. At times, I didn’t have to think twice before lending my bottle of water to a fellow trekker during a high-altitude Himalayan Trek. Or when I spent nights at an underprivileged Children’s Home on the outskirts of Nairobi, I felt the most comfortable.   I realized that the constraints were all in my mind. I didn’t need a second to break free from them when the situation arose. Everything instilled more confidence in me. I knew I could adjust with anyone!  Traveling helped me to realize that I can be my best company  We are obsessed with the internet and love to connect with others in the virtual world. This is something that takes up a considerable amount of your time. Have you ever thought how beautiful it would be to take a break and connect to yourself?   We often seek love and appreciation from others. Appreciation seems like a source of happiness. But do we appreciate ourselves for trying something new or something we thought we never could?   I’ve been no different. I also gave a lot of importance to what others would say about my deeds. Then I realized that it doesn’t really matter if I’m happy with myself.   As I started to explore the world by myself, there were often times when I would find myself away from the network amidst solitude – and that’s when I realized that I love being by myself! This is what traveling taught me!   I could read for hours, listen to music, or just sit by the window watching the clouds float.  What Traveling taught me: To declutter my mind and trust others  While growing up, we are often taught not to trust strangers. Such things often clutter our minds with suspicion, and we would look at anyone with a tinge of mistrust, thinking that the person might harm us in some way or the other.   It was only when I started traveling that I came to realize how stupid these things were! During most of my journeys, I’ve blindly trusted the local transport drivers to take me to places and suggest areas worth exploring.  While I was in Bhutan for a month, where I was mostly hitchhiking, I got into random people’s cars, who, at times, took a detour to drop me off! There were times when I would be hungry, and a fellow traveler on a bus or a train would offer me something that I would gladly eat.   It helped me to learn that the world isn’t as bad as we think it to be while sitting at home! Eventually, it was the kindness I received on the roads that decluttered my mind and taught me to trust strangers.  Minimalist living, compassion, and gratitude are what traveling taught me  In our otherwise regular life, we tend to think that we need a lot of things (which we term ‘necessities’). Thus, we often end up buying stuff that we probably would never use!   Our love for material possessions takes control over the mind. So, we keep spending to accumulate things. Even I used to be a shopaholic at some point in time and would pick up anything that caught my attention.   But when I started to travel, I realized that my rucksack could accommodate only a limited amount. Further, when I was on the roads, I barely needed those things that I’d shopped for! The endless journeys taught me the charm of minimalistic living, and now, I pack as little as I think I would need.  Also, we often forget to be grateful for all that we have and take things for granted.   I traveled to different places, met several people, and got to know about their lives. Then, I figured out that not all are lucky by birth, and I was in a much better place than many out there. This realization was humbling, and I learned to value things.  Summing Up: I realized That I Feel Alive When I Wander  I realized that I felt most alive when I was traveling. It is hard to enlist everything if you ask me what traveling taught me.  Along with the changes that I could understand, there have been many subtle yet significant changes. I now don’t react to things easily, and my aim is always to understand the other person’s perspective.   Moreover, I have started believing in the words of Erwin Schrodinger. I visited some of the best places in the winter months in the past and will share my experience with you.   Simultaneously, I will also guide you to make a perfect itinerary. New Orleans, Louisiana   New Orleans is one of the best places to visit in February especially because of the mild weather and a hint of celebration! It is designed with stained glass, a grand ceiling which is painted and with an active congregation!   Explore the French Quarter – you will get to see beautiful architecture along with ornate balconies! Walk along the narrow little streets with cafes and eateries, brimmed with people, merry and mixing!   Visit The National WWII Musuem – Did you know there is an interactive submarine exhibit? San Antonio, Texas   The vibrant city is the perfect place for you to visit if you are making a list of the best places to visit in February. Even with its high humidity, it is perfect in February, with comfortable vibe, several cultural attractions and the hint of Spanish heritage.   Places To Visit   The Alamo – A striking fortress, this historical museum is a must for you if you are going to Texas. Apart from the artifacts, there are beautiful gardens that you should check out, as they are open from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.   San Antonio Botanical Garden – If you are planning to visit the garden, you can go between 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. With 38 acres of area, you will see a glass conservatory, native plants, roses, a pond with beautiful flora and fauna surrounding it and trails.   Brackenridge Park – Open from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. This is a historical riverside park! There are several athletic fields along with a zoo. It is perfect for you kid or even you, if you love exploring a zoo.   What To Do   Visit The Alamo – It was built as a chapel initially, but it gives a vibe of a fortress! You can also visit the cafe, which is located inside the Botanical Garden!   Explore Brackenridge Park – You can walk or hike a trail or even organize picnic areas along with play areas. Furthermore, you can take miniature train rides as they are available across the park!   3. Palm Springs, California   Known for its design elements, the cultural scene is quite trending here in Palm Springs, California. The desert city is sunny in February and is perfect for fine dining, going to world-class golf courses and exploring modern architecture.   Places To Visit   Joshua Tree National Park – The 24-hour open park is a perfect place for you if you love walking across beautiful trails, trees, native wildlife, and vegetation. There are allotted places for you to have a barbeque get-together for which you need to get a pass from recreation.gov!   Palm Springs – There are several trails that you can explore when you visit such as Araby trail or Andreas Canyon trail at Indian Canyons. Another thing you can do is visit Champagne Yacht, a perfect dinner cruise with your partner! It is one of the best cruises for couples!   Agua Caliente Cultural Museum – The museum exhibits the history of the natives, the Agua Caliente Tribal people. The Gallery is about 10,000 square feet with several exhibition areas. You have to pay $10 as an adult while children under 5 years are free to visit! Seniors and children need to pay $5 as an entry fee!   What To Do   Explore Joshua Tree National Park – You can see the rock formations and effects of severe earthquakes. Furthermore, there are Joshua trees along with wildlife such as ground sloths, camels, Columbian mammoths, dire wolves, and saber-toothed cats.   Hike the Indian Canyon – It is a 2-mile hike, where you can check out the historic Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians grounds. There are several hiking trails with wildlife and vegetation!   Visit the Agua Caliente Cultural Museum – You should visit the museum if you want to learn about the history of the Cahuilla Nation! With digital animation and projection of pictures and paintings, you will get to learn about the migration stories of Cahuilla Indians.   4. Kauai, Hawaii   The average temperature of the place is warm so, if you are craving some sun, you know what to do! Known as the “Garden Isle” it is one of the perfect places for you to visit this February. Lush beauty all around, you can do several activities to make the best of the trip.   Places To Visit   Na Pali Coast State Wilderness Park – Spread across 17 miles, the Na pali Coast is extraordinarily beautiful. With hidden caves, towering cliffs and clear turquoise water below, it is nature’s gift to mankind!   Waimea Canyon State Park – You can get a perfect view of Niihau Island from the viewpoint at the canyon. The Park is stretched across 14 miles with a depth of 3600 feet giving you some of the coolest views of deep valley gorges.   Wailua River – The river is beautiful and when you visit, you can check out one of the main attractions, the Kauai vistas of Mt. Waialeale. It takes about 5 hours to complete the 2 miles of the river while kayaking! So, if you were wondering about warm places to travel to in February, here we are!   What To Do   Hike the Na Pali Coast – Known as the Kalalau Trail, it is a challenging 11-mile trail that is not for beginners. A challenging hike, you get to see the Hanakapiai Falls and visit the Hanakapiai Beach!   Explore the Waimea Canyon – You will take a minimum of 9 hours and 21 minutes to explore the whole canyon! It is challenging but if you are looking for some quite time, it is a popular trail for camping, hiking and backpacking.   Go Kayaking at the Wailua River – You can try something new with the different kayak guides and trips organized! You get brief, then gear up and paddle across the clear waters of the river! All your sightseeing is covered while you kayak your way across the river.   5. Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Tennessee   In February, you must visit Great Smoky Mountains National Park if you are a mountain lover! Afterall, with fewer landscapes, you can enjoy the snow landscapes and beauty of the scenic views.   Places To Visit   Cades Cove – A valley, the popular destination is known for its wildlife, scenic views and historical buildings. Log cabins and churches are worth taking pictures of along with spotting black deer, white-tailed deer, raccoons and coyotes!   Grotto Falls Trail – with a 2.6-mile distance to cover, this trail actually leads to a waterfall of 25 foot! The mountain cove at the top will give you some of the best views of the exotic forest around it.   Kuwohi – The highest point of the valley, Kuwohi is worth visiting if you are visiting Tennessee. The mountain in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is a perfect place for you to visit at a height of 6643 feet!   What To Do   Visit Cades Cove – I would suggest you drive down the Cades Cove Loop Road, a beautiful scenic road creating a perfect romantic drive! Once you reach it, you will be surprised with the beautiful historic structures, explore the culture heritage along with the wildlife.   Trek the Grotto Falls Trail – You get to see rhododendron when passing the old forests along with the various falls that spread across the trail. The trail is moderate so if you do not have any experience, having a guide might help!   Go to Kuwohi – You have to hike the trail, a bit difficult considering it is the highest mountain in the valley.
