Hiking here also means walking along the rugged coastline, through the native forests, and to the geothermal springs. To cut a long story short, the best hikes on Aotea Great Barrier Island, New Zealand are the best routes for exploring its dramatic island.  Furthermore, you can be a beginner or a seasoned hiker. Are Dogs Allowed On Hiking Trails? No, dogs and pets are not allowed on the hiking trails on Great Barrier Island. The trails here are ideal for wildlife spotting.
