It was my first day on the Tucumán wine route, and I saw a few local guys pouring a few drops of wine on the field before tasting it. I was amazed, as at my house I have seen my grandfather offering small portions of food to the gods before having it.  I did not expect to see a similar culture thousands of miles away. I walked to them and asked about the ritual. A guy said, “This is how we pay respect to Pachamama, the Mother Earth.”  Now, this is what traveling does! It creates a common ground when everyone feels the connection, even when exploring the new.  Tucumán, with its Afro-Argentine history and a rich indigenous Diaguita culture, is now expecting more tourists with improved connectivity. The flagship carrier of Panama, Copa Airlines, has now started a flight service to Tucumán from Panama City.  The cradle of Argentina’s independence, Tucumán is also known as the Garden of the Republic for its greenery and a rich agricultural scene. Furthermore, the nearby mountains make Tucumán a favorite of hikers and adventure lovers.  With so many things to see and history, culture, culinary richness, and adventure shaking hands, I had a tough time making the ideal Tucumán, Argentina itinerary.  The best approach is to make an itinerary based on your interests and the side of Tucumán you want to explore.  Knowing Tucumán, Argentina Located in the northwest of Argentina, Tucumán has Andean foothills, subtropical forests, and lush valleys. Thus, it gets the name El Jardín de la República or the Garden of the Republic.  Furthermore, San Miguel de Tucumán, the capital of the province, is historically significant as Argentina declared its independence here in 1816.  The province enjoys Spanish colonial influences along with the indigenous Diaguita-Calchaquí heritage. However, the most common route is flying to the Ezeiza International Airport in Buenos Aires. From there, you will have to take a flight to the Teniente General Benjamín Matienzo International Airport in San Miguel de Tucumán.  If you are in Europe, you can connect via Madrid or Frankfurt. American tourists can fly through major hubs like Miami or Dallas. Long-distance buses and trains also connect Tucumán with other Argentine cities, offering scenic and budget-friendly options. I stood before the remnants of the South Pueblo walls, looking over the Mission Church on an autumn day last year. Looking at the archaeological site and standing below the blue fall sky, I was transported to the time of the American Revolution.  Further, I could hear the noise of a bustling trade fair with people from the Pecos Pueblo community doing business. However, the historical importance of the park is much beyond its association with the American Revolution. It is also related to the Civil War in New Mexico and the Independence of Mexico.  So, with centuries of human history etched in every corner, the Pecos National Historical Park is an intersection of past tales and nature. To be honest, The Pecos Pueblo and Santa Fe Trail were the biggest highlights for me when I was at the national park.  Therefore, my ode to the park will start with brief accounts of these places. Then, I will talk about the Glorieta Pass, again a site of historical importance in the park. Finally, you will have a quick look at the park's wildlife.  Pecos National Historical Park: A Land Of Historic Wars And Revolutions  The history of human lives in the Pecos National Historical Park goes back to the Preceramic Period or the 11,500 B.C.E. - 600 C.E. However, the Pecos Pueblo site in the park became a prominent place in the history of the American Revolution in the Early Colonial and Pre-Revolt era.  Spanish people started interacting with the Pueblo people. Further, thanks to the Franciscan Missions, the Spanish rule wanted to have command over the economic life and beliefs of the Pueblo people.  Thus, the first seeds of the American Revolution were sown. To combat the oppression of the Spanish people, the Pueblo Revolt took place on 10th August 1680. As a result, the Spanish Government and Franciscan Friars were expelled from the southwest under the leadership of  Po’pay from Ohkay Owengeh. The Spanish Mission Church, built in 1625, was also destroyed in the revolt of 1680.  However, in 1692, the Spanish People further reclaimed the Pecos Pueblo and many other pueblos. Finally, the Pueblo people declined in numbers in 1700. Before, during, and after the first American Revolution, The Pecos Pueblo emerged as an important location with significant events around it!  Further, around 200 years later (1821-1846 C.E.), another site in the park, the  Santa Fe Trail, witnessed travelers, settlers, and everyone else passing through it. The trail was opened in 1821 after Mexico gained its independence from Spain.  The remains of Pecos Pueblo stood there! By the 1830s, the migration of the Pubelo people was complete, and everyone had shifted to the Pueblo of Jemez and continued their traditions.  Moreover, in 1862, there was the “Battle of Glorieta Pass.” On 26th March 1862, this battle between the Union forces and Confederates occurred at a 700 feet elevation.  The Pecos Pueblo Site Today  https://www.instagram.com/p/Cto5MWnS5Oa/ The rise of the Pecos Pueblo site occurred between 1350 C.E. and 1838 C.E. The Pueblo site had two units, the north and south, and could accommodate around 2000 people. Further, it had 1000 rooms. Therefore, Pecos Pueblo thrived as a busy trading center with trade fairs involving people from Rio Grande Pueblos, Plains Nations, the Gulf of Mexico, and the Pacific Coast. The flint arrowheads and shells found here explain the expansive stretch of the route.  Nevertheless, with time, Pecos Pueblo became instrumental in eliminating Spanish oppression and rule. Still, a drop in the trade, Comanche attacks, and diseases deserted Pecos Pueblo. By 1838 C.E., the last resident of the Pueblo had left and joined the Pueblo of Jemez.  Today, the site stands as a relic from the past. However, it is still equally important for archaeologists and historians.  The Santa Fe Trail  Do you know what the Santa Fe Trail marker near Kozlowski's Trading Post says? It says,  Santa Fe Trail 1822-1879 Marked by the daughters of the American Revolution and the Territory of Nex Mexico.  With the independence of New Mexico and the western territories becoming an annexure to New Mexico, the Santa Fe Trail became the route or passage to the westward movement. Naturalists, journalists, travelers, aspirants, traders, and others took this passage as part of the American expansion. Colonel Henry Inman’s “Stories of the Old Santa Fe Trail,” published in 1881, describes the trail well. If you are a history buff, you must read this book well before visiting the Santa Fe Trail today!  “Kozlowski’s Stage Stop and Trading Post” is the highlight of this trail. You can spend some time here to visualize travelers from the past catching some rest after a long journey through the trail. When on the trail, you can explore the remains of the Pueblo and the Mission Church. Reason for Conflict: Union forces and Confederates wanted to control the Glorieta Pass Route through the Sangre de Cristo mountains and the main supply center (Fort Union) for the passage of soldiers and supplies. 2. Contenders: The Confederates, with volunteers from Texas and under the leadership of General Shipley and the Union forces led by Colonel Canby, and soldiers from Fort Union, New Mexico, and Colorado. 3. Battle Begins: March 26, 18624. Reinforcements: 27th March, 18625. Battle Resumes: 28th March, 18626. Battle Ends: 29th March, 18627. Casualty: Death of 375 People 8. Consequence: The Union forces defeat the Confederates as they fail to ruin the Fort Union. Further, the Union forces maintain complete control over Southwest America.  The Glorieta Battlefield Trail is a popular hiking destination today in Pecos National Historical Park. It is a roundtrip loop, and you will have to cover a distance of 2.25 miles to complete your expedition. Further, the unpaved or graveled hiking route makes it moderately difficult for the hikers. In addition, there is an elevation gain of 152 meters.  You have to drive for around 7.5 miles from the main visitor center of the park. You will need to collect a gate code from the visitor center, which is your access code, to open the locked gate in front of the trail.  As you walk through the forest trail, you get to know more about the Civil War in New Mexico. Many infographics are installed throughout the trail, telling you tales from the past. In addition, there are wayside signs and 14 trail markers to explain the history of the battle on this pass in detail.  More About Hiking The Glorieta Pass Battlefield Trail  Time: Around 1 hour Refreshments (Hikers’ Favorites): Pecos Burger at El Maria Bonita (With a lot of meat and a smoky green chilly flavor!) and Chips and Salsa, of course! The Trail Guide you collect from the visitor center already keeps you hooked on the site's history. Indeed, this trail is less about hiking and more about flipping through the pages of the American Civil War in Mexico.  Let’s Hear It From Other Visitors To The Park  “Really nice park. Easy to find and it is free! Inside the visitor center, they had a really great exhibit that followed the pecos overtime. It was super informative and brought a lot more meaning to the actual park. After looking around the exhibit, you can take the trail up and around the park and church. It's amazing that the walls are still there. The view around the park is also beautiful. He thinks it's all recreation and I can't say if it is or not but I know the current Pecos people don't see it that way. According to the Commune di Palermo data, tourism in Sicily saw a boom by 15% just between the period of 2022-23. Again, the recent Istat data says that tourist presence has improved in 2025, and it has been 17.3 million compared to 16.4 million last year.  Also, thanks to the “Touristfiction of the City,” the unorganized worker segment of the city is expecting an employment boom.  Again, with projects such as the “Discovering Rural Sicily,” Sicily is ready to showcase its year-round attractions.  So, in the upcoming years, we are expecting a good mix of the evergreen landmarks and upcoming attractions in the best places in Sicily to visit.  Why Is Sicily A Major Tourism Hub?  The Baroque towns and rugged landscape of Sicily have made it a chosen destination for many celebrated movies, including the cult classic The Godfather trilogy.  In fact. Modern-day blockbusters such as Aquaman and Indiana Jones were shot here. So, Sicily is now a part of pop culture.  Furthermore, with UNESCO World Heritage Sites, such as Agrigento's Temples, the Arab-Norman circuit in Palermo, Cefalù, Mount Etna, Syracuse, etc. Also, the eclectic influences on Sicilian culture, Greek, Roman, Arab, and Norman, have helped Sicily earn the nickname “Italy without being Italian.”  Its location at the crossroads of Asia and Africa has further bolstered its position as a major tourism hub.  Moreover, Sicily is the biggest and most prominent island in the Mediterranean Sea and an autonomous part of Italy.  It is located south of the Italian Peninsula and north of Africa and is known for its rich history, various civilizations, and astonishing natural beauty. What Are The Best Places In Sicily To Visit?  Sicily has taken active measures to promote the lesser-trodden areas. For example, the Discovering Rural Sicily is the project that is working to boost tourism in the inland areas of more than 50 municipalities.  As a result, the Peloritani mountains, Belice, and Terra Barocca are some lesser-known attractions emerging as the best places in Sicily to visit.  So, choose your favorite among the following best places in Sicily to visit.  1. Palermo: The Iconic Arab-Norman Zone Palermo, the capital of Sicily, was the base for my trip to Sicily. In this capital city of Sicily, tourism is not about experiencing the history or exploring the Arab-Norman Zone.  It is also about understanding the way of life.  I have seen how tourism is a monoculture here. At the same time, the unemployment rate is very high in Sicily, around 30% in comparison to the rate of 16.6 percent nationally (Source: The Equal Times).  So, people here have to find work in the tourism sector.  Nevertheless, amidst the combination of Arab, Norman, and Byzantine architecture, the Cathedral of Palermo stands. Palazzo dei Normanni and Ponte dell'Ammiraglio were the highlights for me.  Furthermore, Mondello Beach, a magnificent stretch of sand and crystal-clear waters, is ideal for soaking up the Sun or swimming. Also, as the Sicilian capital, Palermo has a rich history. Noto: Baroque Architecture And Great Food  Many people know Noto as a UNESCO World Heritage Site or the capital of the Baroque-style architecture in Sicily.  However, once you visit Noto, you will also understand that it is one of the best places in Sicily to try pasta and other local food.  Furthermore, the local pastry shops here are amazing.  Also, the city has a history that goes back to the time when Troy fell.  Now, as they say, when something great ends, something amazing also begins.  However, the building of Noto never got the same attention as the Fall of Troy, as we did not romanticize the former in history, literature, or movies as we did for the latter.  That brings us to the history of Noto.  From Neas To Noto: How The City Evolved  Noto was earlier known as Neas. The Sicilian population built it during the Fall of Troy.  It was on the Mendola Hill, and it became a gymnasium, and it adopted all the Hellenic customs when the conquerors of Syracuse took it over.  Then came the Romans, who made it a federated city and Latin municipium. So, the city had its own rules.  Furthermore, the city was under the Arabic and Muslim rule for around 200 years after it surrendered to Roger.  The Earthquake Of Noto And Resurrection  Noto was hit by a massive earthquake in 1693. However, Paolo Labisi, Vincenzo Sinatra, and Rosario Gagliardi were the three main artists behind the resurrection of the city.  They created a beautiful fusion of the Baroque, neoclassical, Spanish, and Renaissance styles.  The City Of Noto And Its Attractions  You will see the Triumphal Arch if you enter Noto from the east. Furthermore, from there, you will reach Corso Vittorio Emanuele, the heart of the city.  The Ferdinand of Bourbon inaugurated this monument in 1838. It has three sculptures.  The Tower represents power, while the Pelican stands for sacrifice, and the dog symbolizes loyalty.  Furthermore, Noto’s primary street, Corso Vittorio Emanuele, is lined with exquisite constructions, including the Cathedral of Noto, an exceptional example of the baroque style. Some other places to visit in this city are Piazza Immacolata, “Church of San Francesco all’Immacolata,” the Franciscan convent, the Church of Santa Chiara, etc.  3. Syracuse: The Birthplace Of Archimedes  The history of Syracuse goes back to 734 BC. The Corinthian colonists built it, and once it was equivalent to Athens in its glory. The city is recognized for its ancient Greek ruins, including the Neapolis Archeological Park, the residence of the famous Amphitheater of Syracuse, and the Temple of Apollo.  Furthermore, it is the home of the famous mathematician Archimedes.  Another must-visit area in Syracuse is Ortigia, the city’s old town, well-known for its spectacular baroque architecture and picturesque streets.  It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.  4. Menfi And Its Wineries  Menfi is a small town located on the southwest coast of Sicily, renowned for its wineries, sandy beaches, and the Selinunte Archeological Park. The city is found in one of the best wine-growing regions in Sicily, and visitors can sample some of the finest local wines in one of the many wineries in the area.  Menfi’s beaches are also a must-visit, with their fine sand and crystal-clear waters excellent for soaking up the sun or swimming. Today, Menfi has an important role to play as a relaxed alternative to Palermo, Noto, or Syracuse.  Along with promoting wine tourism, it also helps in balancing overtourism in the region.  Also, if you are a history buff, you must visit the Torre Federiciana. Frederick II built this tower in 1238.  5. Agrigento: Home To The Valley Of Temples  Agrigento is located on the southwest coast of Sicily, renowned for its Valley of Temples and Scala dei Turchi.  The Valley of Temples is a UNESCO World Heritage site and residence of some of the best-preserved Greek ruins in the world, including the Temple of Hercules and the Temple of Concordia.  Scala dei Turchi is a gorgeous white cliff located just outside Agrigento and one of Sicily’s most beautiful natural wonders.
