Kandy has been in the news recently for the last-over clincher between Pakistan and Sri Lanka in the last ICC T-20 World Cup tournament.  It is also good to see Kandy slowly getting its rhythm back after the major disruption in the beautiful Colombo-Kandy-Ella-Badulla railway due to the impact of Cyclone Ditwah in the latter part of 2025.  With a man-made lake at the epicenter, Kandy, in a bowl of mountains, was home to the last rulers from the Kandyan empire.  Today, it continues to play an important role in the politics, economy, and culture of Sri Lanka as the capital of the Central Province.  Sri Lanka is full of contradictions. From the rich Tamil Culture in Jaffna and the abandoned Buddhist ruins at the Ritigala Forest Monastery, to the bustling city of Kandy, it’s like visiting different countries with a few miles of traveling.  Moreover, Kandy is just 20 km away from Gampola, the home to the famous Ambuluwawa Tower, the symbol of natural diversity and religious inclusivity in Sri Lanka.  Hi, in today’s blog, I will talk about how to reach Kandy, the things to do in Kandy, where to stay, where to eat, and more.  How To Reach Kandy?  Kandy, one of the major cities of Sri Lanka, is easily accessible. If you are a budget traveler and a believer of the LowDownUnder Travel philosophy, you can take a local bus or train for the journey.  1. The Kandy Railway Station: The Major Gateway The Kandy Railway Station is the main gateway to the city if you are traveling from other parts of the island.  Also, this railway station on the beautiful Kandy to Ella line still exudes a colonial charm and shows Victorian influences in its architecture.  A train ride from Colombo to Kandy takes around 2 hours and 30 minutes, and based on the class, the ticket prices cost between LKR 300 and 1200.  You can even take a train on the Kandy to Ella route to explore the tea plantations, mountains, and the highland region.  However, being one of the most scenic railway routes in the world, tickets for these trains are always in high demand.  You can check out the available tickets at the official website of the Sri Lankan Railways. Tickets for a date get sold out even 1 month before.  2. Colombo To Kandy Bus  If you cannot book trains to reach Kandy. Don’t get disheartened, as buses are available from the Bastian Mawatha Bus Station in Colombo.  You can take an ordinary or AC intercity bus to reach Kandy from Colombo. The distance is around 120 km and the travel time is approximately 3-4 hours.  Also, the ticket prices start from LKR 360.  What Are The Things To Do In Kandy?  Kandy is the cultural capital of Sri Lanka. So, no wonder that it offers a good mix of colonial history, spiritual experience, and the serenity of the Kandy Lake.  Also, Kandy is home to the quintessential Singhalese food. I found the delicacies in Kandy to be way creamier and milder than the fiery food in Jaffna.  Nevertheless, I will talk about what to eat in Kandy a little later, and for now, let’s explore the things to do in Kandy and enjoy a mixed bag of experiences.  1. Visiting The Royal Botanic Gardens Hours Open: 7:30 AM to 5:30 PM Entry Fee: LKR 200 for Locals, LKR 3540 for Foreign Visitors From Kandy City, you can take a short tuk-tuk ride to reach the Royal Botanic Gardens. It is home to more than 4000 plants and covers an area of 147 acres.  A green oasis in the overwhelming city landscape, it also has an arboretum and decorative flower beds.  My favorite, however, was the majestic palm tree avenues. However, as the day grew, it got crowded by social media content creators.  Furthermore, there are giant bamboo trees. Another popular photography spot in the national park is the Mahaweli Ganga River suspension bridge. However, more than five people cannot get on the bridge at a time.  So, you may have to wait in a queue if you desperately want a photo for your socials.  Moreover, you will see bats hanging from trees, chipmunks, and monkeys in the botanical gardens. And don’t miss the Spice Garden here.  Also, if you feel hungry, you can buy drinks and snacks from the stalls inside and the local vendors outside the park. 2. Exploring The Udawattakele Forest Reserve Hours Open: 6 AM to 6 PM Entry Fee for Foreigners, LKR 830, For Locals: LKR 70  I walked for around 30 minutes to reach the Udawattakele Forest Reserve. You can even take a tuk-tuk ride from the Centre of Kandy.  It has some of the most famous caves in Kandy and diverse fauna.  However, I did not expect that mother macaque monkeys would welcome me with their babies clinging to them.  After the grand entry, I chose the circular route around the park as I wanted to see the religious caves, the bathing pond, and the city viewpoint.  The Route  The green canopy stands in humility as you advance on the route, and now you are transported to a different world.  The birds were chirping, and I could hear the squeal of monkeys.  However, the highlight on that route was the Liana’s. These tree-sized vines created coils along the oath.  I followed the route upward and reached the City View Point.  The City View Point  From the City View Point, I loved the perspective of Kandy City and Lake. Then, walked further to come across the Cittavisuddhi Lena cave and othe two religious caves.  The cave had beautiful sculptures, paintings, and offerings by pilgrims. These are sacred to the Buddhist people.  However, overgrown trees and the fear of insects and bats deterred me from entering the cave and exploring the two other Buddhist caves.  Despite all the cautions, destiny had something different in store for me. There were leeches all over my legs, and luckily, I was carrying adequate salt to get rid of them.  The fellow tourists also helped to remove the leeches.  3. Visiting The Bahirawakanda Vihara Buddha Statue The Bahirawakanda Vihara Buddha Statue at the top of a hill is the guardian angel of Kandy. You need to take a short and steep walk to reach the Buddha Statue from the town.  You can even take a tuk-tuk.  Once you reach the statue, you can find the steps behind the magnificent statue and climb to higher vantage points looking over the other side of the city of Kandy.  Moreover, there is a small shop from where you can take trinkets and religious texts. The entry fee was 600 LKR when I visited last.  4. Exploring The Kandy Market I mentioned how an old lady in the Jaffna Public Market was the icebreaker during my trip to Jaffna.  In Kandy, it was the Kandy Market, which made me acquainted with the hilly region of Sri Lanka.  The market was near the Kandy Station. I visited it early in the morning and found vendors selling dried fish, bananas, fresh vegetables, and souvenirs.  5. Spending Moments By The Kandy Lake The Kandy Lake, or Lake Kandy, is at the heart of the city and is very close to the Temple of the Tooth.  It is a magnificent man-made lake around which you can take a walk of 2.1 miles. The pathway is called the Cloud Wall, and the highlight of my walk was finding out about the Queen’s bathing pavilion.  This ivory excellence reminded me of the regal past of the Kandy Lake.  I also spotted the ducks, busy schools of fish, and water monitor lizards.  Moreover, there is a well-groomed garden in the center of the lake. When I visited, it was in full bloom.  6. Walking To The Kandy Viewpoint After stretching my legs at the Kandy Lake, I took a short walk to reach the Kandy Viewpoint.  Hiking to the Kandy Viewpoint is one of the most delightful free things to do in Kandy. You can capture panoramic shots of the city from this viewpoint and interact with local hawkers for a meaningful cultural exchange.  7. Visiting The Asgiri Maha Vihara Pirivena - Buddhist Stupa And Temple If you are a Buddhist or someone eager to learn about the religion, visiting the Asgiri Maha Vihara Pirivena is one of the best things to do in Kandy.  This stupa is very close to the city, and I took the stairs across the train tracks to reach the stupa.  For me, the highlight of the stupa was the meditation room on the central floor. The iconographies were grand and meaningful.  Furthermore, the walls there depicted the three stages of decay a body has to undergo after death.  However, I did not yet know what was awaiting me, the dome of the stupa.  Filled with Buddhist artwork, an enormous lotus carving, and eight statues of Lord Buddha, it defined enormity.  The military guide finally took me to the balcony that surrounds the stupa. I found many monks clad in orange robes busy in their rituals, and I also loved the view.  8. Visiting The Temple Of The Tooth A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Temple of the Tooth or Dalada Mandira preserves the canine tooth of Lord Buddha.  It has the Udawaththa Kelaya to the east and the Lake Kandy to the south.  After several invasions and destructions, the temple was finally rebuilt by King Keerthi Sri Rajasinghe, and it is in its current form that we see today.  The temple has beautiful works of ivory, gold, and silver.  More Things To Do In Kandy  Along with being a primary tourist attraction in Sri Lanka, Kandy is also the gateway to many iconic landmarks showing the richness of Sri Lanka in nature and wildlife.  You can take a train ride or a bus ride from Kandy to the Royal Cave Temples of Dambulla. Or, you can attend a wildlife safari in Kaudulla National Park and other national parks of Sri Lanka.  Where To Stay In Kandy? Know The Accommodations I stayed at a hostel near the hillside surrounding the city. It was modest, but the views I got from the room and balcony were amazing.  However, if you are not willing to walk so much, you can choose places such as the Ceyloni City Hotel.  The tariff of this city hotel is around 7500 LKR.  What To Eat In Kandy?  You can choose between vegetarian and non-vegetarian options in Kandy. Balaji Dosai is a nice spot to try vegetarian food, especially dosa.  The Siri Ramya Hotel is the place to try Kottu Roti in Kandy. You can have it as spicy as you want. Also, you can combine them with different types of veggies, eggs, chicken, or mutton.  Another thing you must not miss in Kandy is the snacks available on the bus or train. The fried chips and snacks have a lot of salt and chilli.  However, they are great for the taste buds.  Also, do not forget to try the rice and curry combination at the “famous hole in the wall rice and curry joints” in Kandy.  These offer a nice and filling lunch at the best price.  The Nightlife In Kandy: Where To Drink?  Kandy is not a place famous for its nightlife. However, if you want to cherish some drink after a busy day, you can visit places such as The Stag’s Head Pub and the Royal Bar and Hotel.  Enjoy the beers, cocktails, and your favorite drinks with spicy local snacks, and enjoy the view of the city and lake at night.  Drinking at any of these places will cost you around 790 LKR.

Rome is unlike any other place. Here are some of the best things to do in Rome, as recommended by locals, whether this is your first or 20th visit. This is a city where narrow streets lead to stunning temples, the mound serves pasta, and there are endless opportunities to people-watch. There's a reason it's one of the most well-known cities in the world, but you can only truly appreciate its allure if you visit. Things To Do In Rome It’s important to have a plan because Rome is much larger than you may have imagined. Archaeological finds, famous art collections, and an abundance of culture make Rome special.  But don't worry, you still have plenty of time to enjoy an aperitif outside in the warm sunshine and digest your lunchtime pasta. Vatican Museums And Sistine Chapel Across 54 galleries, courtyards, and hallways, the Vatican Museums, established by Pope Julius II in the sixteenth century, are home to one of the greatest and most significant art collections in the world. The Sistine Chapel is home to thousands of prehistoric sculptures, Raphael pieces, and, of course, Michelangelo's frescoes. Get tickets to explore the Vatican Gardens, which are home to fountains, plants, and a recreation of the Our Lady of Lourdes Grotto, as well as the Vatican Necropolis, which is beneath St. Peter's Basilica, if you have the time and can arrange well in advance. The Colosseum The Colosseum is a must-see when visiting Rome, of course. The popes used it as a castle and fortress after it was first inaugurated as a mausoleum for Hadrian and his family. It even has a hidden escape route connecting the building to Vatican City. These days, it’s a museum featuring rooms with frescoes, a display of medieval weapons, and expansive views of Rome and the neighboring St. Peter’s Basilica.  Inside is a small cafe where you can have a drink or some snacks while taking in views of the Vatican. The Pantheon One of the best-preserved ancient structures is the Pantheon, which was constructed by Emperor Hadrian in 125 AD. With a diameter of 142 feet, its dome is the biggest in the entire globe. This is a must-see in Rome, and if you're visiting the city over Pentecost weekend, you're in for a treat. This tops every tourist's list of things to do in Rome. To commemorate the occasion, tons of rose petals are dropped from the oculus during Sunday Mass. It's quite a sight. The Pantheon is free to enter as of the time of publishing (May 2023), but there are plans to charge visitors an admission fee of €5. Galleria Borghese Cardinal Scipione Borghese showcased his extensive art collection under its roof.  Built in the 16th century, it is still one of the top museums in Rome.  The Cardinal was an ardent art collector. He was also a big fan of Caravaggio’s works and an early patron of Gian Lorenzo Bernini. Highlights of the museum include Caravaggio’s Boy with a Basket of Fruit, Canova’s Paolina Bonaparte, and Bernini’s Apollo and Daphne. Take a stroll through the park after your visit to the “pleasure palace.” It was once a suburban villa submerged in the vast gardens of Villa Borghese. Domus Aurea The opulent Domus Aurea (Golden House) of Emperor Nero is a rare window into Rome’s underground world.  Also, it is one of the most magnificent homes of its era. It was earlier an opulent amusement venue close to the Colosseum between 64 and 68 AD, covering numerous historic hills in Rome. It was then devastated by the city’s destructive fire in 64 AD. An underground tunnel through the Galleria Lapidaria connects the two buildings of the museum. Visitors can also enjoy a superb view of the Roman Forum.  Make time to spend a few hours perusing the collection. Also, don’t forget to pay a visit to Piazzale Caffarelli’s hidden garden, right behind the square. Gianicolo Rome, sometimes referred to as the “city of seven hills,” is renowned for its picturesque viewpoints and abundance of terraces that provide breathtaking views of the cityscape.  Gianicolo is the highest point in Rome with a panoramic view over the Eternal City.  It is worth the trek even though it isn’t technically one of the fabled hills. It is above the Trastevere neighborhood. Nearby is the magnificent Fontana dell’Acqua Paola. It featured in La Grande Bellezza’s opening scene. Its majesty will astound you. Testaccio Market The Testaccio neighborhood is the epicenter of Rome’s culinary traditions. So, it is a must-visit destination for foodies and daring diners alike. The region was once home to the biggest slaughterhouse in Europe.  Workers there typically got compensation for the leftover animal parts. They called it the “quinto quarto,” or fifth quarter. The Testaccio Market, a bright and modern structure, is full of enticing stalls. It serves everything from freshly made pasta and craft beers to tripe stews and artichoke sandwiches.  Trastevere: The Heart Of Roman Nightlife While Testaccio owns the culinary history, Trastevere owns the evening.  This medieval neighborhood, located just across the Tiber, is a labyrinth of ivy-clad lanes and cobblestones.  Start at the Piazza di Santa Maria, home to one of Rome's oldest churches, and let the sounds of street performers lead you into the backstreets.  Local favorites like Freni e Frizioni offer a vibrant aperitivo scene, while hole-in-the-wall spots serve supplì (fried rice balls) that define Roman comfort food. Most of us think of the Nadi resort buffets when we are in Fiji. However, if you want to know the real food and soul of Fuji, you have to be in Suva. It is the “Melting Pot of the Pacific.” So, the food stalls and shops you find here are not tourist traps. With the fragrant smoke of BBQ everywhere, you always crave more. Furthermore, the sweet smell of pineapples and the earthy aroma of turmeric here are addictive. Also, there is a brilliant fusion of cooking techniques here. The food here blends the bold spices of India with the stir-frying technique of Canton. So, in Suva, staying cooped up in the hotel for breakfast would be a waste of time. Stop 1: Morning At Suva Municipal Market  The Suva Municipal Market is the place where you breathe and feel the city. If you have the right Suva market guide and you arrive here by 8 AM, you will find the freshest produce here. Exploring the Municipal Market is also very crucial if you want to explore the culture of Suva. • Try Tropical Fruit Tasting In Suva  The Fiji Gold pineapples are different. These fruits are sweeter and smaller compared to the alternatives found in Western supermarkets.  Other tropical fruits you will find here are Fijian chestnuts or Ivu nuts and Soursop. Soursop has a creamy custard flavor. • The Spicery Head to the spice floor of the market, and it’s okay if you feel sneezy with the aroma of coriander and cumin. These buttery Rotis are wrapped around a filling of dry curry. The dry curry is usually made of chicken, potato, and pumpkin. It is so convenient that you can do it even when you are on a walk. The Suva Bus Stand is the best area to try these Roti Parcels. There are many small kiosks and "holes-in-the-walls.” These places serve hundreds of Roti Parcels daily. Want to try the freshest Rotis? You must look for places where the queue of the office goers is the longest. Stop 3: The Curry Trail  Indo-Fijian cuisine has Indian spices. However, the dishes here are different. In the food here, you will use more local root vegetables. Furthermore, the dishes are spicier, and various cooking techniques are used in making them. Try eating at the following places to try vegetarian and non-vegetarian Indo-Fijian food. Indiana Curry House & Bar is the best place here to have lamb chops, tandoori chicken, and chicken butter masala. Govinda Vegetarian is the place to have Samosas, Barfi and Gulab Jamun. Stop 4: Indigenous Flavors You Must Try  To understand Fiji, you must eat Lovo (earth oven) style or stews thickened with coconut milk. It is the best local food to try in Suva Fiji. Kanalevu Kitchen or The Old Mill Cottage are the places to try Lovo in Suva. These places have an authentic vibe, and you will feel like being in your grandma’s kitchen. Another indigenous delicacy is Kokoda. This is Fiji’s take on ceviche. You can marinate the Spanish Mackarel in lime juice and then serve it with onions and chillies, and of course, a bowl of fresh coconut cream. The combination is heavenly, and it has the right balance of flavor punch and texture. Now, it’s getting really grand. Rourou Mutton is the ultimate Fijian comfort food. In this dish, the Taro leaves (Rourou) are simmered. After a while, they have a spinach-like consistency. You can cook tinned fish or mutton in this mix. Also, you must add plenty of coconut milk for the rich, creamy texture. You can have the most unique experience at Tiko’s Floating Restaurant. It is a converted ship docked at the harbor, and you will have the best mud crabs and grilled lobster here. Another place is the Grand Pacific Hotel (GPH), which also has the nickname of the Grand Old Lady. It is a colonial-era hotel and has hosted Queen Elizabeth II. You will love sitting on the veranda here and enjoying the sunset with a high tea or sunset cocktail. Food Intensity Guide: A Note For Travelers On A Suva Food Tour Fijian hot is not the same as Western hot. So, if you are in Fiji and a local tells you that the curry is medium spicy, you must know that it’s hot.  If you are not a local, your brows are going to sweat. The small Fijian chilies or the Bongo chilies are powerful. So, it is always safe to ask for a mild spice level. Furthermore, indigenous Fijian food relies heavily on root vegetables such as Cassava and Dalo, or Taro. These veggies are starchy, and the gravies made with them are dense. So, be mindful of the quantity of these dishes while eating. Practical Tips To Follow On A Suva Food Tour Hygiene: Stick to busy stalls where the turnover is high.  Water: Stick to bottled water or "Fiji Water" (which is actually cheaper here!).  Cash is King: While hotels take cards, the market vendors and roti shops are strictly cash-only (Fijian Dollars).  What Are The Best Expert Tips For Your Suva Food Tour?  A food tour is not just about what to have. You must understand the flavor, texture, and richness of the dish you are having. Furthermore, you have to be aware of the right time to have them. The local market stalls and street vendors do not accept cards. So, you have to carry $5 and $10 FJD bills. You will notice a heavy crowd at the curry houses between 12:30 PM and 1:30 PM. So, if you want a seat, you must visit between 11 AM and 2 PM. You will have the tropical fruits or the roti parcels in your hands. So, you will need to wash your hands before and after eating. So, carry wet wipes and avoid public sinks. Don’t eat the fruits collected from the market without washing them. However, pineapples and bananas are safe. Is the tap water looking yellowish? There is rust in your water. So, it’s best to choose an Island Chill or Fiji water.  Fijian curry has meat with bones. So, be careful while chewing. The vegetarian and non-vegetarian division is followed strictly in Fiji. So, if you want to have pure veg food, you must look for the same sign. Tipping is not mandatory in Suva, Fiji. But you must leave a small change ($2-$5). It is a kind gesture in small eateries.  The Fiji dishes with Lolo or coconut milk are heavy and rich. So, you must not plan any heavy outdoor activity, such as hiking, after having these gravies. Yes, street food is usually safe in Suva. The specialties, such as the BBQ or Roti, are served fresh and hot. These lunch spots are walk-in. However, if you are having dinner at places such as GPH or Tiko’s, you have to book the place. 4. Can I Drink The Tap Water In Suva? Tap water is usually safe in Suva because it is chlorinated. However, if you are a tourist and have a sensitive stomach, you may fall sick.Also, sometimes, the tapwaters (especially in old buildings) have a yellowish color.
