While setting my Kandy itinerary, I thought Peradeniya Botanical Garden would take around two hours. However, I ended up staying four hours in the botanical garden. Still, I felt that I rushed through exploring the spice garden. The time it demands is not just because of its expansion. Every section of the park is worth stopping for.  In this article, I will give you a walkthrough of Peradeniya, along with the fees, timings, and route details I gathered along the way. Sources: Department of National Botanic Gardens The Royal History Behind The Gardens A walk around Peradeniya helped me realize how much of Kandyan royal history is tied up in this particular loop of the Mahaweli River. From Royal Pleasure Garden To Botanic Institution Before the British formalized it in 1821, the Peradeniya Botanical Garden was a royal pleasure garden. The Kandyan kings were the patrons of the site, and it was especially dear to the last queen of Kandy.  Six years after the fall of the Kandyan Kingdom to the British in 1815, the land was converted into a proper botanic garden. It was initially managed by Alexander Moon and centred on coffee and cinnamon cultivation before it grew into the far broader collection it is today. A Living Library Of Over 4,000 Species Today, the park has more than 4000 plant species. You will see palms, ferns, orchids, and shrubs from across the world. So, within the same park, you will walk from the spice garden to the giant bamboo grove. It is like a mix of different ecosystems along the riverbank.  What I Found Walking Through The Gardens Peradeniya spans across 147 acres. So, it is not possible to cover the entire area on a single visit.  So, pace yourself rather than making an attempt to see everything at once.  The Royal Palm Avenue This is the postcard shot everyone takes, and for good reason.  Rows of towering royal palms line a long, straight avenue, and the scale of it is more impressive in person than in any photo I had seen beforehand. The Spice Garden I lingered longest here.  Cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla, and other spices grow as actual plants rather than the packaged versions most visitors are used to. Also, having someone point out which bark strip becomes the cinnamon on a supermarket shelf made the whole spice trade history of the island feel a lot more concrete. The Orchid House The Orchid House displays Cattleya, Dendrobium, Arachnis, Oncidium, Phalaenopsis, and Vanda varieties and their hybrids, including specimens of Tiger Orchid, the largest orchid species in the world.  I would budget more time here than you think you need. It is easy to walk through in ten minutes, but worth thirty. The Giant Javan Fig Tree And Giant Bamboo These are two of the garden's most photographed non-flowering specimens. There is a sprawling Javan fig with a canopy wide enough to shade a small crowd. Also, the bamboo grove with stalks reaching over 30 metres. ] Both feel less like garden features and more like landmarks in their own right. The River Loop And Great Lawn The Mahaweli River wraps around most of the property. The paths along that loop are noticeably quieter than the main avenues. If you want a break from the crowds near the entrance, this is where to find it. However, they need to produce the right proof.  Also, for local senior citizens with NIC proof, the entry fee is LKR 50.  How To Reach Peradeniya? Peradeniya sits less than 5.5 kilometres from central Kandy on the Colombo road, which makes it one of the easiest half-day trips out of the city. Take a short tuk-tuk or taxi ride, or a public bus running the Kandy–Peradeniya route.  Several local operators also combine it with a Kandy city tour, pairing the garden with the Temple of the Tooth and viewpoints around town in a single outing. Best Time To Visit Unlike Hakgala Flower Garden, Peradeniya's lower elevation and river-loop setting mean it is a comfortable visit almost year-round. However, a few things are worth timing around. Early morning (7:30–10:00 am) for cooler temperatures and quieter paths. The dry inter-monsoon months for the most reliable weather, since Kandy still sees regular rainfall through much of the year. Weekdays over weekends, since school groups and local families tend to fill the garden on weekends and public holidays. Tips From My Visit To The Peradeniya Botanical Garden Wear comfortable shoes. The paths are flat and wheelchair-friendly, but the total distance covered adds up quickly across 147 acres. Electric buggies and golf carts are available for rent. The 4-seater electric cars cost LKR 1000 per hour, and the 8-seater vehicles cost LKR 2000 per hour.  Carry water and sun protection. Despite the tree cover in places, long stretches of the main avenues are fully exposed. For photography, the light along the Royal Palm Avenue is best in the first hour after opening. Nearby Places To Combine With Peradeniya Botanical Garden Because it sits so close to Kandy, Peradeniya rarely needs to be its own dedicated day trip. The Temple of the Tooth Relic and central Kandy are easy extensions to a trip to this botanical garden.  Also, don’t forget the University of Peradeniya campus, which borders the gardens. Moreover, if you want a journey onward to the hill country, you can include Nuwara Eliya in your itinerary.

Yes, the Kandy to Ella Train is still closed. Even if you search for the Kandy to Ella trains on the Sri Lanka Railways website now, it will show, “The rail line from Kandy to Ella is still under repair. Please select Ambewela as your closest alternative departure station.” So, it means that Sri Lanka Railways, especially the iconic Kandy to Ella train route, is still recovering from the destruction of Cyclone Ditwah in 2025.  However, operation of the Ella Odyssey train has resumed from 7th January 2026.  Nevertheless, everyone waits for the Kandy to Ella train route to be fully functional. And here I want to share my experience of an iconic train ride on this Kandy to Ella route.  I will also share details about the Ella Odyssey Train, now running between Ambewela and Badulla.  Kandy To Ella Train Journey: Quick Facts  FactsDetailsRoute DistanceAround 120 KmBest ClassReserved Second ClassBest Time for the Train JourneyDecember to April The Most Beautiful Stretch Nanu Oya and EllaRail Route Built In1864 The Kandy To Ella Train Journey: Why Is It So Famous?  The Kandy to Ella train service was started in the British period for the transportation of tea to the highlands.  However, today, it is acknowledged as the most beautiful railway route in Sri Lanka.  The best thing is that the scenes outside the train window do not remain static. From small villages to tea plantations, hills, and waterfalls,  Furthermore, the train on this route passes at a slow pace, making the experience all the more immersive.  So, a train journey on this route is one of the best things to do in Ella and, in fact, one of the top attractions in Sri Lanka.  My Experience Of The Kandy To Ella Train Journey  If you are traveling from Colombo to Kandy, you now have to take a bus.  However, I visited before the devastation caused by Cyclone Ditwah. So, I enjoyed my train journey from Colombo to Kandy.  From Kandy Lake to the iconic Temple Of The Tooth, the top attractions in Kandy make it the cultural epicenter of the country.  After exploring Kandy, I took a train ride to Ella, and here is how I enjoyed the journey.  1. Train Journey Started From The Kandy Station  Like the city itself, the Kandy Railway Station is also very pretty.  It has a history dating back to the British era. Even today, behind its modern exterior, you will find a Victorian interior and platforms.  So, once you enter the station, you will feel history and nostalgia becoming palpable before your eyes.  The station is hot and humid, and the crowd may seem a little annoying.  However, a glimpse of the iconic blue train of Sri Lanka will take all irritation away.  2. The Blue Train  The train reached Kandy station, and the color of the Chinese diesel locomotive was turquoise blue.  I boarded the third-class compartment and luckily got a seat.  I already knew about the history of this rail route at the National Railway Museum, Kadugannawa.  The train has been operating since the 1920s. However, passengers started traveling on these trains in the 1960s.  Nevertheless, the train was jolting heavily, and it slowly left Kandy, making its way to the hill country.  Cricket And More  Coming from India, it was fun talking about cricket with the Sri Lankan locals on the train.  They showered their love for every cricketing legend, from Sachin Tendulkar to Virat Kohli. I also shared my adoration for Kumar Sangakkara and Sanath Jayasuriya.  You know what the best thing about this train ride was? The train moved slowly. However, the wind coming through the windows got mixed with the voices of the locals singing.  Overall, it was a feeling of freedom and excitement.  The Vendors  The Kandy to Ella train ride will be incomplete without having chai and hot wade. As the vendors get on board, the fragrance of hot wade and tea immediately makes you hungry.  Also, as soon as the train leaves the Kandy station, you start enjoying the cool breeze.  The View  Ever-stretching tea plantations, misty mountains, and beautiful stations, I got to see everything throughout the train journey from Kandy to Ella.  So, within a few hours, I got a glimpse of the local lives of Sri Lanka.  I also understood why it is called one of the greatest train rides in the world.  Continuing The Kandy To Ella Rail Route Journey: Toward The Nine Arch Bridge And Demodara Railway Loop Once I got down at Ella after a train ride from Kandy, I took a tuk-tuk to reach the iconic Nine Arch Bridge.  The Nine Arch Bridge is a historic landmark for its role in World War I. The first train on the bridge passes at 9:30 AM, and the last train passes at 5:30 PM.  Moreover, along with the Nine Arch Bridge, the Demodara Railway Loop is another attraction on this route.  I had the most peaceful experience of train riding at the Demodara Railway Loop. Unlike the Kandy to Ella train, it was not crowded at all.  The Kandy To Ella Train: Running Between Ambewela And Badulla Now  Train $11015 runs between Ambewela and Badulla except on Wednesdays. It departs the Ambewela station at 3 PM and reaches Badulla at 5:46 PM.  You can buy a first-class ticket, and it costs ₹INR 1000.  Furthermore, the train $11005 leaves the Ambewela Station at 9:30 AM and reaches Badulla at 12:16 PM.  You can buy second-class and third-class train tickets. A third-class ticket costs ₹575 and a second-class ticket costs ₹770.  Moreover, on Wednesdays, train #111043 departs Ambewela at 1:30 PM and reaches Badulla at 4:15 PM. By the time I heard Baker's Falls, my legs already knew we were on the return leg of the Horton Plains loop.  We had started before sunrise to beat the mist at World's End. We also walked the open plateau in that strange, cold, grassland light, and then dropped back into cloud forest for the final stretch.  The falls announced themselves before they appeared as a low rush of water through the trees. After the wide-open plains, that first glimpse of water tumbling over dark rock into the ferns felt almost intimate by comparison. Baker's Falls is inside Horton Plains National Park in the Nuwara Eliya District. You have to walk from the entrance along the main park trail to reach Baker's Falls.  Belihul Oya, a major tributary of the Walawe River, has formed this waterfall.  Reaching The Park Entrance You can reach Horton Plains National Park from Nuwara Eliya, at a distance of around 32 km.  You can also travel from the towns of Pattipola and Ohiya, both of which sit on the upcountry railway line.  If you are traveling by train, you will have to hire a tuk-tuk or taxi for the final stretch to the gate. The Hike To The Falls You can reach Baker's Falls via the park's main loop trail. The same trail also takes in Little World's End and the main World's End escarpment.  From the entrance, it is about 4 km to World's End, then roughly 2 km further around the loop to Baker's Falls, and another 3.5 km back to the entrance. So, it is a 9.5 km round trip in total, usually taking about three hours at a comfortable pace. To reach the water itself, you'll descend a set of steps from the main trail down to the viewing area. World's End: The Rest Of The Loop Almost nobody visits Baker's Falls on its own. It is one stop on the wider Horton Plains circuit. It is located alongside Little World's End (a roughly 300 m drop) and the main World's End escarpment. In the World's End escarpment, the plateau falls away nearly 880 m Horton Plains is unusual among Sri Lanka's national parks in that visitors can walk the main trail independently, without a mandatory guide. However, hiring one at the entrance is a good way to learn more about the park's cloud-forest ecology and resident sambar deer. What Makes Baker's Falls Worth The Walk Baker's Falls is modest by Sri Lankan standards, with a height of around 20 meters. It is dwarfed by giants like Bambarakanda further south.  But its setting is what makes it memorable.  The Belihul Oya spreads across a wide, dark rock face in two stages, hemmed in by rhododendron and tree-fern growth. These trees feel completely different from the open grassland just a couple of kilometres back up the trail.  Originally known as Gonagala Ella, the falls were renamed after Baker. Baker is credited with discovering them during his time exploring and hunting in the Nuwara Eliya highlands. After the exposed walk to World's End, where wind and cold are the main things you are contending with. The descent into the forest around Baker's Falls is a genuine change of pace. It is quieter, greener, and sheltered.  Most people treat it as the natural place to stop, catch your breath, and refill water before the final stretch back to the entrance. Wear proper hiking shoes as parts of the trail are uneven. Also, the steps down to Baker's Falls can be slippery. Pack warm layers. Horton Plains sits above 2,000 m and mornings are cold, even though the walk itself will warm you up. There is no swimming at the pool below Baker's Falls. It is deeper than it looks and has a history of drownings. We reached the park entrance again a little after ten, legs tired and jackets finally shed.  Of everything on the Horton Plains loop, World's End is the view people talk about. However, Baker's Falls is the one I would send someone back for on its own.
