Getting To Tahiti And Getting Around Tahiti's Faa'a International Airport, just outside Papeete, is the gateway to French Polynesia.   Still, it is worth planning the logistics before you land because the islands on this list I have shared are not all connected by road.  Also, you will need to take a short flight or ferry ride of their own.  Flying Into Tahiti  Faa'a International Airport receives direct flights from the following prominent locations.  Los Angeles (about 8.5 hours)  San Francisco (about 8.5 hours)  Seattle (about 9.5 hours)  Honolulu (around 6 hours).  It is also connected to Auckland, Tokyo, and Nadi.   Most long-haul flights land in the evening, which matters for your first-night plans.  Ferry And Flights To Moorea And Beyond  Is Moorea on your itinerary alongside Tahiti's beaches and hikes?  Three ferry companies, Aremiti, Terevau, and Vaeara'i, run between Papeete and Moorea's Vaiare marina every 60–90 minutes.  The 30–45-minute crossing costs around 1,500 XPF (about €13) one way.   Air Tahiti also flies the route in roughly ten minutes for a higher fare.   Ferries don't run at night.  So, if your flight lands after about 5 PM, plan on a night in Papeete before crossing over the next morning.  Getting Around Once You Are There  Tahiti's sights, from Fautaua Valley to Teahupoo and Mont Aorai, are spread around the island's coastal road.  So, renting a car or scooter is the easiest way to string them together in a day.   Taxis exist but are expensive for longer trips, and public le truck buses are limited outside Papeete.  So most visitors budget for a rental for at least part of their stay.  If you are island-hopping to Moorea, most car rental desks are near the ferry dock in Vaiare rather than the airport.  That is why it is worth booking ahead if you want a vehicle waiting when your boat comes in.   Ferry schedules thin out on Sundays and holidays.  You need to check the current timetable a day or two before you plan to cross, rather than assuming the same frequency as a weekday.
