Matara, the second-largest city in southern Sri Lanka, is an important gateway to Dickwella Beach, Hiriketiya Beach, or Talalla Beach.   However, beyond that, Matara is a place where the Dutch colonial heritage meets vibrant culture.  Now, talking about this part of Sri Lanka, places such as Mirissa or Galle get more prominence.  However, as I have also mentioned on my blog on Talalla Beach, Matara felt more intimate.  First of all, it was not tourist-heavy, and it is yet to get out of its shell of a hidden gem. Secondly, from beaches to historical landmarks and spiritual retreats, you will find everything in and around Matara.  So, in this blog, I will talk about the places to visit in Matara in detail.  What Are The Best Places To Visit In Matara?  Matara is now gearing up for the Sri Buddha Year 2570 State Vesak Festival on 27th May 2026.   It will take place at the Midellawala Ancient Temple premises at Thihagoda in Matara.  The program involves a week-long celebration and will continue till 2nd June, 2026.  From moral teaching to spiritual learning and sessions on environmental conservation, this week will be significant for the people of Matara and the followers of Buddhism in the country.  Nevertheless, if you are in Matara, do not forget to visit these places.  1. Polhena Beach: Swim, Snorkel, And Relax Polhena Beach impresses at first sight with its calm water. The water here is shallow, making it one of the most family-friendly beaches in Sri Lanka.  Furthermore, the protected coral reef here makes it ideal for snorkeling, even for beginners.  When you snorkel or swim here, you can find many species of reef fish. I could even spot a few sea turtles here as I walked a few meters from the shore.  Above all, Polhena Beach is a great place to unwind. Also, watching the sunset here was a wonderful experience, with the sky changing colors and those colors reflecting in the water.  2. Matara Fort: A Must-Visit For A History Buff  If you are fascinated by the colonial history of Sri Lanka, Matara Fort is a must-visit.  You know, the Galle Fort is iconic. However, the Matara Fort also has a history of Portuguese and Dutch colonialism in this part of the world.  The Portuguese built this fort, and later in the 17th century, the Dutch reinforced it.  Furthermore, the best part of the Matara Fort is how it still has an active presence in the daily life of the town.  There are schools, government offices, and shops inside the wall. Moreover, when I reached, I heard the noise of local boys who were playing cricket inside the fort.  I started talking to them, from Sangakkara to the rising P Nissanka, we covered a lot of players from the country in our discussion.  It was a fun interaction. Now, talking about cricket has been one of the most important things to do in Sri Lanka for me.  Again, as I walked through the fort, I visited the old Dutch church, which was built in 1706. Moreover, from the Matara Fort, I enjoyed amazing views of the Indian Ocean.  Being a public district, the fort does not have an entry fee, and you can enjoy a walk anytime you want.  3. Paravi Duwa Temple: One Of The Best Spiritual Places To Visit In Matara  The floating temple, or the Paravi Duwa Temple, is on a small island called Pigeon Island or Paravi Duwa.  You have to walk through the footbridge connecting the mainland and the island. If Matara Fort offers you an insight into the region’s history, this floating temple is all about serenity.  The temple has many stunning Buddha statues and a golden Stupa. However, the most fascinating thing is the replica of the footprint on Adam’s Peak.  Furthermore, here, you will enjoy a stunning coastal backdrop.   The temple remains open from 6 AM to 6 PM, and it is best if you walk through the bridge during the sunrise.  4. Weherahena Temple: A Proud Example Of Modern Buddhist Architecture  On the east side of Matara, the Weherahena Temple has the biggest seated Buddha Statue of Sri Lanka.  The statue is 39 meters tall, and here you will find an underground tunnel.  Now, walking through the tunnel was a fascinating experience. There, you will see more than 200 murals about the life of Lord Buddha.  Moreover, the tunnel remains open from 6 AM to 8 PM.  5. Star Fort: A Dutch Colonial Heritage  The Star Fort, close to the Matara Fort, originally went by the name of Redoute Van Eck.  It is a hidden gem in Matara, but the architecture here is equally fascinating.  Furthermore, the fort gets its name from its unique six-pointed star shape. Built in 1765, the fort had a strategic position to prevent attacks from the land.  The Matara Fort, however, was more instrumental in protecting against attacks from the sea.  Also, you must not miss a visit to the Star Fort museum, which offers insights into the Dutch colonial history of Sri Lanka.  The fort remains open from 9 AM to 4 PM, and I had to pay an entry fee of around ₹100.  6. Dondra Head Lighthouse: Sri Lanka’s Southernmost Part  I took a short tuk-tuk ride from Matara to Dondra, the southernmost part of Sri Lanka.  The Dondra Light House, with a height of 49 meters, is the tallest lighthouse in the country, and this 1889 fort offers an amazing view of the Indian Ocean.  However, they did not allow the visitors to climb up the lighthouse. So, instead, you can enjoy a coastal walk and take the best snaps for your socials.  7. Matara Local Markets: Offering Insights About Local Culture And Flavors  I always believe that to know a place, you have to explore its local markets. The Matara local market smells of handicrafts, tropical fruits, and spices.  Moreover, here, you will enjoy prawn fritters or isso wade and pol sambol, even kottu roti, the authentic delicacies of Sri Lanka.  Furthermore, despite the language barrier, the crowd there was so friendly and knowing I am from India, some of them even shared how they feel the solidarity.  So, the next time you are in Matara, don’t just treat it as a stopover for the popular southern Sri Lankan beaches.  Try to soak in the history, culture, and spiritual vibe of this beautiful coastal town.

Yes, the Kandy to Ella Train is still closed. Even if you search for the Kandy to Ella trains on the Sri Lanka Railways website now, it will show, “The rail line from Kandy to Ella is still under repair. Please select Ambewela as your closest alternative departure station.” So, it means that the Sri Lankan Railways, especially the iconic Kandy to Ella train route, is still recovering from the destruction of Cyclone Ditwah in 2025.  However, operation of the Ella Odyssey train has resumed from 7th January, 2026.  Nevertheless, as everyone waits for the Kandy to Ella train route to be fully functional, here, I want to share my experience of an iconic train ride on this Kandy to Ella route.  I will also share details about the Ella Odyssey Train, now running between Ambewela and Badulla.  Kandy To Ella Train Journey: Quick Facts  FactsDetailsRoute DistanceAround 120 KmBest ClassReserved Second ClassBest Time for the Train JourneyDecember to April The Most Beautiful Stretch Nanu Oya and EllaRail Route Built In1864 The Kandy To Ella Train Journey: Why Is It So Famous?  The Kandy to Ella train service was started in the British period for the transportation of tea to the highlands.  However, today, it is acknowledged as the most beautiful railway route in Sri Lanka.  The best thing is that the scenes outside the train window do not remain static. From small villages to tea plantations, hills, and waterfalls,  Furthermore, the train on this route passes at a slow pace, making the experience all the more immersive.  So, a train journey on this route is one of the best things to do in Ella and, in fact, one of the top attractions in Sri Lanka.  My Experience Of The Kandy To Ella Train Journey  If you are traveling from Colombo to Kandy, you now have to take a bus.  However, I visited before the devastation caused by Cyclone Ditwah. So, I enjoyed my train journey from Colombo to Kandy.  From the Kandy Lake to the iconic Temple Of The Tooth, the top attractions in Kandy make it the cultural epicenter of the country.  After exploring Kandy, I took a train ride to Ella, and here is how I enjoyed the journey.  1. Train Journey Started From The Kandy Station  Like the city itself, the Kandy Railway Station is also very pretty.  It has a history dating back to the British era. Even today, behind its modern exterior, you will find a Victorian interior and platforms.  So, once you enter the station, you will feel history and nostalgia becoming palpable in front of your eyes.  The station is hot and humid, and the crowd may seem a little annoying.  However, a glimpse of the iconic blue train of Sri Lanka will take all irritation away.  2. The Blue Train  The train reached Kandy station, and the color of the Chinese diesel locomotive was turquoise blue.  I boarded the third-class compartment and luckily got a seat.  I already knew about the history of this rail route at the National Railway Museum, Kadugannawa.  The train has been operating since the 1920s. However, passengers started traveling in these trains in the 1960s.  Nevertheless, the train was jolting heavily, and it slowly left Kandy, making its way to the hill country.  Cricket And More  Coming from India, it was fun talking about cricket with the Sri Lankan locals in the train.  As they showered their love for every cricketing legend, from Sachin Tendulkar to Virat Kohli, I also shared my adoration for Kumar Sangakkara and Sanath Jayasuriya.  You know what the best thing about this train ride was? The train moved slowly. However, the wind coming through the windows got mixed with the voices of the locals singing.  Overall, it was a feeling of freedom and excitement.  The Vendors  The Kandy to Ella train ride will be incomplete without having chai and hot wade. As the vendors get on board, the fragrance of hot wade and tea immediately makes you hungry.  Also, as soon as the train leaves the Kandy station, you start enjoying the cool breeze.  The View  Ever-stretching tea plantations, misty mountains, and beautiful stations, I got to see everything throughout the train journey from Kandy to Ella.  So, within a few hours, I got a glimpse of the local lives of Sri Lanka.  I also understood why it is called one of the greatest train rides in the world.  Continuing The Kandy To Ella Rail Route Journey: Toward The Nine Arch Bridge And Demodara Railway Loop Once I got down at Ella after a train ride from Kandy, I took a tuk-tuk to reach the iconic Nine Arch Bridge.  The Nine Arch Bridge is a historic landmark for its role in World War I. The first train on the bridge passes at 9:30 AM, and the last train passes at 5:30 PM.  Moreover, along with the Nine Arch Bridge, the Demodara Railway Loop is another attraction on this route.  I had the most peaceful experience of train riding at the Demodara Railway Loop, as unlike the Kandy to Ella train, it was not crowded at all.  The Kandy To Ella Train: Running Between Ambewela And Badulla Now  Train $11015 runs between Ambewela and Badulla except Wednesdays. It departs the Ambewela station at 3 PM and reaches Badulla at 5:46 PM.  You can buy a first-class ticket, and it costs ₹INR 1000.  Furthermore, the train $11005 leaves the Ambewela Station at 9:30 AM and reaches Badulla at 12:16 PM.  You can buy second-class and third-class train tickets. A third-class ticket costs ₹575 and a second-class ticket costs ₹770.  Moreover, on Wednesdays, train #111043 departs Ambewela at 1:30 PM and reaches Badulla at 4:15 PM. Once you cross the massive bay of Weligama, you will find many hidden beaches and coves on the south-western coast.  There is a stretch that goes through small inlets and has beautiful golden sands. These inlets with coconut palms are called Midigama collectively.  While Midigama will win your heart with its quaint beauty at first glance, it is more popular as a surfing spot for intermediates.  It is no less than a treasure hunt with unexplored reefs and secret waves.  Moreover, the surf spots of the Midigama Beach, such as Lazy Left or Ahangama, are diverse and unique in the experience they offer.  However, a local professional surfer confided that the Coconuts are the best surfing spot if you already have some skills.  Hi, are you planning a trip to Midigama Beach anytime soon? Read this blog to know about the location, surfing sports, and more about this beautiful beach.  Where Is Midigama Beach?  The cluster of beaches, known as the Midigama Beach, is between Weligama and Ahangama, a popular beach town and surfing spot.  Furthermore, the beach spans an area of 6 kilometers, including the clusters of inlets.  The best and most budget-friendly way to reach Midigama. It is a train ride of around 3 hours and 15 minutes, and the ticket cost me around Rs. 240.  I took the train from Colombo Fort at 6:15 PM and reached Midigama at 9:25 PM, and the ticket price was Rs 550 for the second class.  Where To Surf On Midigama Beach? I have already shared that the surfing spots in Midigama are diverse. So, the size, the type of breaks, and the surfing style will be different from one surfing location to another.   So, here are the surfing spots everyone loves.  1. Ahangama Ahangama, on the northwest of Midigama, has been a popular surfing hub for the last few years.  It has many surf camps and bars, and its reef breaks are excellent for beginners and mid-level surfers.  Kabalana Beach is the best place to start your surfing expedition here.  2. Ram’s Right  Ram’s Right is the toughest surf break in the region, and you really need to make a quick surfing start.  Furthermore, the barrel sections make it fascinating. Also, you really need to look out for sea urchins here.  3. The Combination Of Lazy Right And Lazy Left  These two offer secure reef brakes, and Lazy Left is slightly harder to surf than Lazy Right.  So, Lazy Right is more suitable for beginners. Here, a surfer can enjoy cruisy rides where the surf breaks over a deep reef.  4. Plantations  It is very close to Weligama, and it is an ideal surfing spot for intermediates.  The entry point is an opening in the rock by the Plantation Surf Inn.  Furthermore, the reef here is deep, and surfing usually continues in the right direction and a few lefts.  5. Coconuts  Coconuts is the place where you will enjoy the classic Sri Lankan reef surfing experience.  Here, you can surf right and left, and the breaks are on both ends of the beach.  However, the east end of the beach is choppier.  6. Weligama Once you are done surfing at Coconuts, you can take a short tuk-tuk ride to Weligama.  Furthermore, with a sandy bottom, it is an ideal surfing destination for beginners.  What Are The Places To Visit Near Midigama Beach?  If you are done surfing, you can explore the historic Galle Fort and the hedonistic Mirissa Beach.  1. Mirissa Beach Mirissa Beach turns into the most Hedonistic place in Sri Lanka in the evening.  The bars here offer amazing happy hour offers. So, you will find the cheapest chilled beer in Sri Lanka here.  2. Galle Fort Galle Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is just 25 km away from Midigama Beach.  It is one of the best examples of a European fortified city in South and South-East Asia.  Enjoy climbing up the rampart and having a walk from one corner to another, admire the architecture, and enjoy the 360-degree view of Galle.  Watching the sunset from the top of the fort is also a magical experience.  What Is The Best Time For Surfing In Midigama Beach?  Like all other beaches on the southern coast of Sri Lanka, November to April is the best time to visit Midigama Beach.  Regular storms and high rainfall are the main forces hitting the beach in this season.  Furthermore, when you are planning to surf in Midigama beach, pick early morning or late evening as the time as the winds pick up speed later in the day.  Where To Eat In Midigama Beach?  The main beach of Midigama and the place near the Coconuts have many cool eating places.  Contrary to Ahangama, the Midigama Beach exudes a hipster energy.  If you are looking for a local experience where you will also get some cultural insights, you can visit Sandaru Restaurant.  It is a family-run restaurant, and here you can eat kottu, rice, curry, and other local delicacies.  Another excellent place for trying local delicacies here is the Shirani Home Made Rice & Curry near the Coconut Beach.  Here, you will find the best rice-vegetable combos.  Where To Stay For Surfing At Midigama Beach?  You can stay at the really cool hostels near the Lazy Left if you want to surf at Midigama Beach.  However, if you are traveling with family and you are looking for comfort, Naomi Beach Hotel, the best surfing hotel in Sri Lanka, will be your ideal choice.  It has a stunning infinity pool, and the on-site bar is perfect for chilling after a surfing session.  Moreover, it is close to the Coconuts, for me, the best surfing spot in Midigama Beach.  Also, Surfing Wombats is another place to stay in Midigama for surfing. I can stay here simply because of the pizza they serve.  Furthermore, it is a short walk from the Lazy Left and Lazy Right surfing spots.  Also, if you want to be a part of the surfing camps in Midigama Beach, you must take a tuk-tuk to Weligama, and you will find many reputable surfing camps there.

The southern shores of Sri Lanka have many amazing beaches stretching from Tangalle to Dondra Head, or the southernmost tip of the country.  Talalla Beach is one of them, and it has sea vines, golden sands, and sleepy hotels lining the coast.  Furthermore, if you are a fan of the TheLowDownUnder Travel philosophy, Talalla is the perfect pick.  Again, if you are visiting the Hiriketiya Beach or the Kudawella Beach, the Talalla Beach is just a short tuk-tuk ride away.  Moreover, it is a peaceful place to see the turtles hatching and surf.  Here is more about the things to do in Talalla Beach, the nearby attractions, and other details. Where Is Talalla Beach?  Talalla Beach is just 6.5 km away from the Dondra Head, the southernmost part of Sri Lanka.  Also, it is between Dickwella and Matara towns.  You can, of course, take a taxi from Colombo to reach Talalla Beach after a journey of 3.5 hours.  However, if you are also traveling on a budget like me, you can take a train from Colombo to Matara, and then you can take a tuk-tuk ride from there. It costs around LKR 1500.  Also, from Matara, you will get a local bus to Talalla Beach, and the ticket price will be LKR 50.  Nevertheless, I was already at the Kudawella Beach, which is around 7 km away. So, I boarded a tuk-tuk, and it charged me 500 LKR. Surfing And More: What Are The Things To Do At Talalla Beach?  Now, many travel guides claim that surfing is one of the best things to do in Talalla Beach. However, the reality is that Talalla Beach is not a surfing spot.  Still, if you are visiting Talalla Beach, you will find many surfing breaks or spots on the southern coast of Sri Lanka nearby.  1. Surfing Near Talalla Beach  Starting from the west to the east, these are some places to surf near the Talalla Beach.  Madiha  The left and right reefs at Madiha are one of the most challenging breaks in the southern coast of Sri Lanka. Early morning is the best time for surfing here. SK Town  SK Town is around 20 minutes away from Talalla Beach.  However, SK Town is still an emerging place for beginners and intermediate surfers.  The A-frame peaks here are powerful, and you will find a sandy bottom.  Dawn and late evening sessions are the best times for surfing in SK Town. Hiriketiya Hiriketiya is the most prominent place for surfing near Talalla Beach. You can do a surf camp here and explore the semi-hollow and fast left-hand break.  However, Hiriketiya is touristy, and that can be a problem for surfers.  Kudawella  If you have never tried surfing before, you must visit the Kudawella Beach.  The beach has its own break, and it is even more protected than Hiriketiya.  2. Watching Turtle Hatching From Mount Lavinia to Uppuveli Beach in Trincomalee, the beaches in Sri Lanka are famous for turtles.  However, at Talalla Beach, I had the unique experience of seeing turtles hatching from their eggs.  The small turtles break the egg shells and come out. Then, they immediately crawl toward the sea.  Furthermore, if you visit the beach at night, you can see turtles laying eggs.  3. Visiting The Lace Factory Now, the lace factory is not a tourist attraction in Talalla Beach. I luckily came to know about it from a local.  It was just a walk of 5 minutes from the beach, and the artwork I saw inside the factory was fascinating.  It was a great cultural experience seeing the locals preserving the traditional art form of the country.  4. Yoga Sessions The Talalla Beach Resort has a Yoga Shala.  If you are an early morning person, you can attend a Yoga session here and rejuvenate your mind and body.  5. Getting An Ayurvedic Massage  Like Southern India, Sri Lanka also has a tradition of Ayurvedic treatments.  You can avail yourself of some relaxing ayurvedic therapies and massages at the Taltalla beach houses. What Are The Places To Visit Near Talalla Beach?  You can combine your time at Talalla Beach with a fascinating wildlife experience, enjoying town life at Matara, and a delightful swimming experience at the Seethagalla natural seawater pool.  1. Udawalawe National Park Spotting elephants in the Udawalawe National Park is one of the best things to do in Ella.  Despite a distance of 161 km, a trip to Udawalawe National Park from Talalla Beach is worth it.  You just cannot miss the early morning safari here and spot the baby elephants and their mothers.  2. Matara  I loved Galle Fort. However, to me, Matara, at a distance of around 44 km, felt more intimate.  I enjoyed the cheerful voices and the sound of the balls getting struck when the youngsters were playing cricket inside the old fort.  Furthemore, I visited the Mid Mountain Tea & Spices here and collected some local brews as souvenirs.  3. Seethagalla Natural Seawater Pool The Seethagalla Beach is to the east of the Talalla Beach. It has sand with black patches and coconut trees.  Furthermore, this rugged cove has a tidal pool. It was a lovely swimming experience.  Where Is The Best Time To Visit The Talalla Beach?  The dry season, from November to March, is an ideal time to plan a trip to Talalla Beach.  These months offer the best wave conditions for swimming and surfing. Especially November to early January is the best window for surfing.  However, the temperature in these months ranges between 32 and 37 degrees Celsius. Moreover, the high humidity in the air makes it stuffy sometimes.  In addition, there can be sudden downpours.  Also, in a day, early mornings and late evenings are the best times for surfing as the winds are the weakest.  Moreover, if you are in Sri Lanka in April onward, you must look further east. Arugam Bay, especially, is a delightful location for surfing on the eastern coast of Sri Lanka in the wet season.   Where To Stay Near The Talalla Beach? Talalla Beach has limited accommodation options. However, the Talalla Sunshine Beach is a delightful option with 10 beautiful rooms and an uninterrupted view of the sea.  Also, it is just a few steps away from the beach. So, you can even walk to the beach at night for a serene experience.  Another popular option here is the Talalla Resort, which also functions as a retreat center and has spa and yoga facilities.

Dalawella Beach is the best beach for families in Sri Lanka in 2026.  It’s not me, and Lonely Planet has conferred this title to Dalawella Beach, which is just south of the Unawatuna resort town.  Furthermore, it is just 20 km from Galle and less than 8 km from Galle Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.  On the same list, the Hiriketiya Beach has become the best beach for amenities, the Mirissa Beach has been chosen as the best beach for whale watching, and Unawatuna Beach has been selected as the best beach overall.  You can take a tuk-tuk from Unawatuna and reach this beautiful beach within 10 minutes. Furthermore, it is a 2-hour journey by road.  Taxis to Dalawella Beach are also available from Galle.  While easy accessibility remains a plus for the beach on the southern coast of Sri Lanka, it stands out because of its rope swing attached to a leaning palm tree. This swing is also called the Dalawella Swing.  Moreover, Dalawella Beach or Wijaya Beach has a sheltered natural pool, formed by a reef and adorable turtles.  So, what are the things to do and the top attractions at this beach? Let’s discuss this in detail in this blog.  How To Reach Dalawella Beach?  As I have said already, you can easily take a tuk-tuk from Unawatuna and reach Dalawella Beach within 10 minutes.  I paid LKR 200 as the tuk-tuk price and got off at the Dream Cabana Hotel. Here, you will find the palm tree that has the famous Dalawella Swing.  You will also get buses from Unawatuna to Dalawella every 15-20 minutes, and the ticket price is LKR 50.  Why Is Dalawella Beach A Must-Visit? (Things To Do In Dalawella Beach) Sri Lanka has the best of many things. It has the famous Buddhist sites, such as the Dambulla Royal Cave Temple, or the Sacred City of Anuradhapura.  These are high-energy places and are soaked in spiritual fervor.  On the other hand, the coastal gateways such as the Uppuveli Beach in Trincomalee or Ahangama Beach Town, offer you the ideal places to relax and unwind.  The Dalawella Beach near Unawatuna is, of course, a nice addition to this list of beaches in Sri Lanka.  While relaxing and enjoying a laid-back vibe is the best thing to do when you are at Dalawella Beach, here are some other activities you must try.  1. Swing Over The Water  The palm tree swing is the top attraction at Dalawella Beach. This swing is attached to the leaning palm tree in front of the Dream Cabana hotel.  You can enjoy this swing ride over the water and have the most amazing experience. A hit on Instragram, this is the perfect spot for photography or making reels at Dalawella Beach.  The cost of taking this swing is LKR 500, which I have seen many travel guides mentioning as the entry fee.  However, entry to Dalawella Beach is free.  2. Watch The Sunset From The Wijaya Rock You will find the Wijaya Rock if you walk a few hundred meters from the Wijaya Rock. The standalone rock comes out of the sand and reaches out into the ocean.  There is a palm tree right beside the rock. So, the overall setup is very Insta-worthy, especially during the hours of sunrise and sunset.  3. Swim With Turtles  Turtles are a major attraction on the Sri Lankan beaches.  Be it the beaches in Jaffna or the Sea Turtles Conservation Centre near Mount Lavinia Beach, these adorable creatures add more delight to the beach experience.  At Dalawella Beach also, I spotted some turtles, and swimming by them in the lagoon was relaxing.  So, you don’t need to snorkel to meet them.  Furthermore, if you don’t want to swim in the water, you can watch them from the top of the Wijiya Rock or use a drone camera to capture their beauty.  4. Surfing Near The Frog Rock  Dalawella Beach is not the best option if you want to enjoy surfing in Sri Lanka. However, it is not the worst either.  You will find the iconic Frog Rock at the end of Dalawella Beach. The natural formation of this boulder makes it look like a frog.  However, the water here is quite shallow, and the reef is a major challenge. So, you will mostly find locals surfing in this area.  Moreover, Dalawella Beach has some delightful cafes and restaurants. You can enjoy seafood and chilled beer here and enjoy amazing sunset views.  What Are The Other Beaches To Visit Near The Dalawella Beach?  As I have mentioned, Dalawella Beach is not that great as a surfing destination, and it does not have a surfing break.  So, you can try nearby beach options such as Ahangama, Kabalana, or Koggala.  The best among them is, of course, Ahangama, and you can easily reach this beach town by a tuk-tuk, and it takes just 20 minutes.  Ahangama is the best because it has around fifteen surf breaks along a few kilometers of the coast.  The Kabalana Beach, around 15 km away from Dalawella Beach, is also a popular surfing destination and has the best A-frame in Sri Lanka.  However, if you want a more peaceful experience at a remote place, you can try Koggala. It is just 10 minutes away, but it can be a little dumpy.  Where To Stay If You Want To Surf At Dalawella Beach?  You will find many hotels to stay at Dalawella dotting the beach. However, it is always better to take a tuk-tuk ride or a short walk to find better options.  For example, the Rockside Cabanas Hotel is the most popular accommodation, and it is within walking distance of the beach. It is also very close to the turtle lagoon.  You can also plan a stay at the Horizon Hill Top Villa. Take a tuk-tuk to reach this hotel in two minutes from the beach.  It serves an amazing breakfast, and it has a lovely pool in the jungle.  What Is The Best Time To Visit Dalawella Beach?  Dalawella Beach remains open 24x7. However, 6 AM to 7 PM is the best time to visit the beach in a day.  Season-wise, December to March or the dry season, is the best time to visit Dalwella Beach.  Moderate temperature with an average of 31-32 degrees Celsius, long sunshine hours, and calm waves make this season ideal for regular tourists and surfers.  Moreover, these months are the best for spotting turtles here.

Search for Habarana on Google, and in 9 out of 10 cases, it will show that Habarana in North-Central Sri Lanka is the base for visiting the cultural triangle of Sri Lanka.  However, Habarana in the district of Anuradhapura in itself is a perfect blend of adventure, culture, and nature.  So, if you want to set your cultural itinerary in Sri Lanka right, Habarana will be at the epicenter. In this article, I will talk about the things to do in Sri Lanka from Habarana. I will also discuss the top attractions in this beautiful tourist town with a population of 5000.  Where Is Habarana?  Habarana in Anuradhapura District is around 180 km away from Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka.  Located in the north-east of Colombo, it is also just 30 minutes away by road from the Sigiriya Rock Fortress, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and its neighbor, Pidurangala Rock.  How To Reach Habarana?  The most convenient way to reach Habarna is to take a bus or train from Trincomalee.  I, of course, as always, opted for a train ride after a visit to the Uppuveli Beach and exploring the other things to do in Trincomalee.  Getting To Habarana On A Train  The Habarana Railway Station is on the Colombo to Trincomalee Railway Line. I took a night train from Trincomalee (Night Mail, Trincomalee → Colombo Fort).  This train runs daily and departs the Trincomalee Station at 7 PM and reaches Habarana at 9:30 PM.  I bought a second-class ticket, and it cost me 800 LKR. The third-class tickets will cost around LKR 600.  Getting To Habarana On A Bus  From Trincomalee to Habarana, it is a bus ride of little over 2 hours. The ticket price was INR 300 when I last enquired.  You will get different buses run by the Sri Lanka Transport Board and many private buses.  However, considering the scorching Sun of Sri Lanka, a bus ride is difficult in the daytime, and the Trincomalee to Habarana route remains crowded. Why Is Habarana The Base For A Cultural Exploration In Sri Lanka?  Habarana has a beautiful lake by the name of Habarana Lake. It is a tranquil water body with lush greenery around.  It is a beautiful place for birdwatching. Furthermore, you can also spot monkeys and elephants here.  When you are in Habarana, you can start your day with a stroll along the lake. Then, you can plan a day trip to the following places.  1. The Sacred City Of Anuradhapura  Distance from Habarana: 59 Kms The Sacred City of Anuradhapura is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was the religious and cultural capital of Sri Lanka for 1300 years.  However, it was massively impacted due to the invasion in 993 AD.  The main stupas in this sacred complex are the Abhayagiri Vihara Stupa, Jethawanaramaya Stupa, the third-largest man-made structure, and the most sacred Ruwanwelisaya Stupa.  2. Kaudulla National Park  Distance from Habarana: 28 Kms If you want to spot elephants in Sri Lanka, you have to visit the Kaudulla National Park.  However, the Kaudulla National Park is not just about the safaris or spotting the wildlife. During my visit, I found it truly living up to its reputation for animal welfare.  It is one of the places I visited where elephants are not chained.  3. Hurulu Eco Park  Distance from Habarana: 3.4 Kms The Hurulu Eco Park is the closest destination to visit from Habarana if you want to experience the wildlife of Sri Lanka.  Elephants passing between the Minneriya National Park and the Kaudulla National Park use Hurulu Eco Park as an important corridor.  Moreover, the topography of the Hurulu Eco Park is a good mix of plains, rocks, and evergreen jungle.  4. Dambulla Royal Cave Temple Distance from Habarana: 25 Kms The Dambulla Royal Cave Temples are fascinating, and being a two-million-year-old place of Buddhist worship is something extraordinary.  The more amazing thing is that the temples are well-preserved, and people still worship Lord Buddha in these temples.  Spanning an area of 2100 square meters, these cave temples have 157 statues of Lord Buddha and other important figures of Buddhism.  However, among all these statues, the reclining statue of Lord Buddha in the 1st cave will remain etched in my memory forever.  5. Ritigala Forest Monastery Distance from Habarana: 21 Kms The Ritigala Forest Monastery has its historical roots in the 1st century BCE. During that time, Buddhist monks settled here.  Over time, this monastery became an important site for the powerful Pansukulika Sect, which enjoyed the highest form of glory during the 9th to 11th centuries.  However, it was destroyed by Chola invasions in the 10th-12th centuries.  The Ritigala Forest Monastery has a long history of discovery and restoration, too. Moreover, it has a connection with the great Hindu epic, the Ramayana.  In addition, the Ritigala Mountain is home to more than 417 species of medicinal plants and a rich biodiversity. 6. Sigiriya Rock Fortress  Distance from Habarana: 30 Kms The Sigiriya Rock, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is primarily a site of a Buddhist monastery from the 3rd to 1st century BCE. However, there are also legends about this rock fortress being the Golden Palace of Ravana.  Nevertheless, the Buddhist monastery in the Sigiriya Rock rose to importance when Anuradhapura became the capital of Sri Lanka. 7. Pidurangala Rock Distance from Habarana: 30 Kms Many tourists make the mistake of considering Pidurangala Rock as a trekking point that offers a better view of the Sigiriya Rock.  However, along with being a neighbor of Sigiriya Rock, it also has a history of Buddhism associated with it, and the history is 2 millennia old.  After Kashyapa made the Sigiriya Rock the center of power, the monks shifted from there and started residing in the Pidurangala Rock.  It also received royal patronage for its development and for making adequate accommodations for the monks here.  8. The Ruins Of Polonnaruwa Distance from Habarana: 47.5 Kms The ruins of Polonnaruwa are a part of the cultural triangle of Sri Lanka. Polonnaruwa was a growing religious and commercial center of Sri Lanka for over 800 years.  During the Sinhalese and Chola kingdoms and for three centuries, it was the capital of the country.  Today, the Ancient City of Polonnaruwa has the ruins of the Royal Palace, the Sacred Quadrangle, the central dagoba, Shiva Devale, Pabalu Vehera, Rankot Vihara, the dagaba Kiri Vihara, and many other ruins and architecture.  Also, the Buddha sculptures in different dagobas or stupas of the complex were mesmerizing.  9. Minneriya National Park  Distance from Habarana: 5.8 Kms Minneriya National Park has a lush landscape, and along with elephants, it is also home to diverse wildlife such as sloth bears, leopards, and different bird species.  The annual gathering of elephants is the most fascinating incident of the Minneriya National Park. It indicates an event where hundreds of elephants have a meeting, or they gather around the Minneriya Tank.  Habarana: Beyond The Gateway To The Cultural Triangle Of Sri Lanka   Although most people think of Habarana as being nothing more than a bus stop for those heading to Sigiriya or Polonnaruwa, it actually turned out to be the best surprise during my trip to Sri Lanka.  The only reason to stay in Habarana is how convenient the location is.  However, staying there provided me with an experience that you couldn’t reproduce in the more touristy areas of the island, which is the natural beauty of the area. A Place For The Gentle Giants The highlight of my time spent in Habarana was the fact that I was so close to Minneriya and Kaudulla National Parks.  I didn’t just see elephants. I witnessed what is known as the "Gathering."  Also, I observed hundreds of wild elephants gathered around one of the ancient reservoirs while driving around in an open-top jeep.  This is due to it being located in the middle of these two migratory areas.  While we still had wildlife encounters in the more touristy areas, they didn’t have the same natural feel or take the same amount of effort as they did while driving around in Habarana. Authentic Village Immersion In addition to going on safari, I spent a morning enjoying the lifestyle of the people living on the shores of a local lake.  I took a traditional horse-drawn carriage to the lake and paddled across the lake in a canoe.  I shared a meal of rice and spicy sambol with a family in their mud hut that was about as authentic as you could get.  This was far more than just a stopping point, and it was an example of the hospitality of the Sri Lankan people and the slow lifestyle that became my takeaways. Where To Stay In Habarana?  If you're looking for accommodations in Habarana, you're sure to find something that meets your budget, with options ranging from "basic backpacker" to "boujie boutique" accommodations.  For a "calm little oasis," Dudley's Nature Resort is a great option, and it is located 15 minutes away from the main strip of Habarana. Furthermore, the resort is set in a lush jungle environment and includes a pool and breakfast served in the garden.  Moreover, if you are looking to be in a social environment, Roy's Villa Hostel is close by and has an incredible communal atmosphere. Where To Eat In Habarana?  For authentic local flavors, Dewata Villa is a must-visit for its legendary "Rice & Curry" spread.  If you're looking for a quick, budget-friendly bite, Cinnamon Lodge offers great snacks, while the main street is lined with "Short Eat" bakeries for spicy pastries.  For a more social evening, head to Roy’s Villa nearby for delicious communal dinners and great vibes.

Demodara Railway Loop, nestled in the mountains near Ella, Sri Lanka, is one of the most iconic rail routes in the world.  Furthermore, you will get the most amazing views of the Nine Arch Bridge and the train plying through it from the Demodara Railway Loop.  Also, since 2024, this beautiful railway loop has been protected under the New Heritage Management Program.  Moreover, opening on 21st March, 1921, this railway loop has been celebrating more than 100 years of heritage and history.  So, here is a brief account of my beautiful train ride in the Demodara railway loop.  Why Is The Demodara Loop Famous?  Between Ella and Uduwara stations, Demodara is a beautiful railway station in the Uva Province of Sri Lanka.  While extending the railway line to Badulla, the authorities faced a serious challenge due to the steep altitude.  Furthermore, it is famous as the only railway station in the world to be built in a tunnel (Tunnel 42) through which the train passes.  Moreover, this loop, with a length of 441 feet, passes through a 360-degree loop, offering the most amazing views of the surroundings.  Also, it is interesting to know that the design of the Demodara Railway Loop was originally inspired by a Kanyan turban. Then, British and Ceylonese engineers put up the structure. Devapura Jayasena Wimalasurendra was the engineer who conceptualized the idea.  In addition, if you miss the train from Ella to Demodara, you can also enjoy a 9 km hike. The hike continues through tea estates, and then you will meet the iconic Nine Arch Bridge on the way.   Then, you can take a train back from Demodara to Ella. However, I fortunately got to board the trains both times.  A Train Ride In The Demodara Railway Loop  Unlike the Kandy-Ella train ride, a train ride in the Demodara Railway Loop was peaceful.  Also, you could relax even after you saw the train coming out of the tunnel and ascending. It moves very slowly through the loop.  As the train was almost empty and as Sri Lanka demands everything the Travel LowDownUnder philosophy teaches you, I boarded a 3rd class compartment.  I was happy as there was nobody to stop me from peeping through the doors on both sides of the train, and soaking in the beauty of the surrounding lush tea estates.  Also, it was amazing to enjoy a train ride across the iconic Nine Arch Bridge. Moreover, when the train was passing through the Nine Arch Bridge, I could see locals, especially children, standing and waving from the banks of the railway lines.  Overall, it was a comfortable and delightful experience! Insider Tip: When you are traveling from Ella to Demodara, stand near the window or gate on the left side in the direction the train is moving.  From there, you will get amazing views of the Nine Arch Bridge.  Train Time And Ticket Price On The Demodara Railway Loop  If you are traveling from Ella, you will get two trains to the Demodara Railway Loop. If You Want To Walk From Ella To Demodara  I got to know about the Demodara Railway Loop at the Kadugannawa Railway Museum. It was raining for a few days in Ella, and seriously, I needed to do something to get out of the lull.  So, I decided to take a train ride from Ella to Demodara through the Demodara Railway Loop.  I got the train. However, if you miss the train,” go for a 9 km walk through the countryside and tea-covered hills.  The tea shops, nearby hills, and occasional spotting of peacocks in the bush will keep you entertained.  Moreover, as you descend from Demodara to Ella, you will get sweeping views of paddy fields.

Anuradhapura is a part of the Golden Triangle of Sri Lanka along with the Dambulla Royal Cave Enclave, Polonnaruwa, and Sigiriya Rock Fortress.  Furthermore, the Sacred City of Anuradhapura, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was built from the “cutting of a Bodhi Tree” or the “Tree of Enlightenment.”  Before 993, when it was abandoned due to an invasion, it was the political and religious capital of Ceylon, the previous name for Sri Lanka.  Also, if Jaffna attracted me with its Tamil Culture and Hindu Temples, Anuradhapura was a great calling because it was the first place to adopt Buddhism outside India, the country I belong to.  Moreover, Jetavanaramaya, the early 4th-century BCE Stupa, was once the “third-largest man-made building in the world,” with an original height of 122 meters.  However, while the Jetavanaramaya Stupa continues to evoke awe with its grandeur and mystery, the other ruins and remains of Anuradhapura also wait to tell you the history and cultural richness of the region.  So, here is a brief discussion on the places I visited in Anuradhapura.  What Are The Places To Visit In Anuradhapura?  I was staying in a guest house near the Sacred City of Anuradhapura. I rented a bicycle from my guest house for LKR 500, and I took the back route as the staff in the guesthouse guided me.  Off the main road, the cycling experience was beautiful, and I loved spotting the roaming peacocks and little children waving at me.  Beyond the charming views and ambiance, I noticed one more thing. In Anuradhapura, the past and the present walk side by side.  There have been no evictions of the locals in the name of preserving or promoting the ancient ruins and remains in a UNESCO World Heritage Site.  Nevertheless, after talking to the local children for a while, I reached the entrance of the Anuradhapura Sacred City. The entry fee was around 9500 LKR or INR 2800.  However, remember that the ticket includes archaeological sites such as Jetavanaramaya, Abhayagiriya, Ruwanwelisaya, and Thuparamaya. So, if you want to explore other sites such as the Isurumuniya Viharaya, you will need to pay separate fees.  Nevertheless, these are the places I visited in Anuradhapura.  “This sacred city was established around a cutting from the 'tree of enlightenment', the Buddha's fig tree, brought there in the 3rd century B.C. by Sanghamitta, the founder of an order of Buddhist nuns.  Anuradhapura, a Ceylonese political and religious capital that flourished for 1,300 years, was abandoned after an invasion in 993.  Hidden away in dense jungle for many years, the splendid site, with its palaces, monasteries, and monuments, is now accessible once again.” - UNESCO World Heritage Convention.  1. Abhayagiri Vihara Stupa Complex The Abhayagiri Vihara Gargantuan Stupa is magnificent, and the brick stupa creates a contrast against the bright blue sky and the lush greenery of Anuradhapura.  King Vattagamani Abhaya or Valagamba founded this Stupa in the first century BCE. This prominent center of Mahayana Buddhism remains an active place of worship.  Also known as the Northern Monastery or Uttara Vihara, it changed the course of Buddhism in Sri Lanka by deviating from the monolithic tradition of Theravada Buddhism.  Moreover, the Abhayagiri Vihara Stupa is the first Stupa in Sri Lanka to house the tooth relic of Buddha.  Also, the Abhayagiri Dagoba or Stupa at the epicenter of the Abhayagiri Vihara Complex is one of the largest stupas in Sri Lanka.  The Structure And Architecture Of The Abhayagiri Vihara Apart from the Stupa or Dagoba, most parts of the Abhayagiri Vihara are in ruins. There were living houses for the monks and students, libraries, dinner halls, and meeting halls surrounding the Stupa.  Here is a detailed overview of the structures as I saw them. However, the heat will be scorching, and you will find langur monkeys roaming around.  So, try to be there by 6 AM, when the gates open, or after 4 PM. The Sacred City remains open till 8 PM. However, it will take you around an entire day if you want to explore the major ruins of the Anuradhapura Sacred City. The Dagoba Or The Stupa  The Stupa or Dagoba in the Abhayagiri Vihara is in a well-preserved condition. The massive bell-shaped structure of the stupa has a height of around 120 meters, and at its widest, the circumference is close to 350 meters.  The dome, made of brick and lime mortar, has four entrances, and you will find a Devatakotuva or a cylindrical spire and Hataraskotuva or a square-shaped structure as the crowns of the Stupa.  Image Houses, Refectories, And Sub Shrines  I saw the remains of various refectories, image houses, living complexes, and sub-shrines around the stupa.  Among the smaller stupas, the Indikatu Seya and Silasobbhakandaka Cetiya are the most common.  Meeting Halls The remains of the meeting halls or Uposathagharas have been found in the complex.  These Uposathagharas were multi-storied, and Ratnaprasadaya or the jewel mansion was most prominent among them.  Congregation Hall The Sannipatasala, or the congregation hall near the southern entrance of the stupa, is the largest hall in the complex.  The image of Nagaraja, or the king of snakes, or Virupaksha, the protector of the Western Direction, was found in this congregation hall, which is now in ruins.  You can see this image at the Abhayagiri Museum.  Abhisheka Mandapa Or Anointing Pavilion The Abhisheka Mandapa had a stepped entrance, and people believe it to be the place where the statues of Lord Buddha and other Bodhisattvas were consecrated.  Some even consider this the bathing house or Snanghara.  Stone Slabs  Many stone slabs with inscriptions in Nagari Script have been found in this site.  Again, there are two moon stones in Anuradhapura, and one was found at the Queen’s Pavilion and the other at Mahasena’s Palace.  These moon stones are significant features of Buddhist stupas or shrines, as these semi-circular stone structures depict the Buddhist Samasara.  The Dining Room The dining room or hall of the Abhayagiri Vihara has a stone-clad trough, and it is ideal for storing or serving rice that could feed 5000 monks.  Furthermore, there was a dining area, hearths, underground channels, grinding stones, and a sundial in the site Faxian or Fa-Hien described as the dining hall.  The dining hall also has two courtyards.  The Bodhi Tree Shrine The Bodhi Tree Shrine, or the Bodhighara is a subsidiary shrine of the Abhayagiri Stupa. As a token of Buddha’s enlightenment, Sanghamitta, a Buddhist nun from India, brought saplings of the Bodhi Tree.  She planted the saplings in Abhayagiri, and many patrons built small aediculae-like shrines around these trees.  These sub-shrines had images of Lord Buddha in a meditative or Samadhi posture and his footprints.  Moreover, excavation of Buddha statues took place in the Bodhighara sites, and one of them is from the 3rd century BCE, and these resemble the sculptures of the great Gupta dynasty in India.  You can visit the Anuradhapura Archaeological Museum if you want to see these Buddha statues. The Ponds  The tanks and reservoirs near the living quarters were the main sources of water for the complex.  However, water in these reservoirs or tanks came from the Kuttam Pokana or Twin Ponds to the far east of the Stupa.  Moreover, these rectangular ponds were built by Aggabodhi I in the 6th or 7th century CE, and they have shallow ridges, and the inner walls are made of polished stone.  However, for me, the most fascinating thing was the stone slab with the motif of a hooded cobra.  Also, this hooded cobra or Naga establishes a deep connection with India, as Nagas and water have deep connections in Indian mythology.  As I walked further, I came across the Elephant Pond or Eth Pokuna. It is the largest artificial tank in Sri Lanka, and it is the main water supply for all the tanks and reservoirs in the Vihara Complex.  Here also, I noticed a depiction of a hooded cobra on a stone slab.  At the end of exploring the Abhayagiri Vihara Stupa Complex, I must tell you that you must read a little about the place before a visit.  Otherwise, it will be difficult for you to catch up when the guide shares the details.  2. Jethawanaramaya Stupa You will also find the Jetavanaramaya Stupa in the Sacred City of Anuradhapura. It was one of the largest man-made structures in the world, and it ranked only after the Great Pyramids of Giza.  The original height of this structure was 122 meters, and after restoration, the height is now 71 meters.  The stupa, built by King Mahasena in the 3rd Century AD, is a part of a large Jetavana Vihara complex that used to house around 200 monks. Also, like the Abhayagiri Vihara, it has a brick architecture.  This once again indicates how ancient Anuradhapura was a hub of brick production. In fact, Ruwanwelisaya, the most sacred stupa of the country inside the Anuradhapura Sacred City Complex, also had a brick architecture.  However, for the recent restoration, they used cement in the outer layer of the stupa.  Moreover, massive excavation works have taken place in the Sacred City of Anuradhapura, and the gold panels showing the imagery of the Bodhisattva and the partial inscriptions of the Prajñāpāramitā Sutra.  Now, Prajñāpāramitā Sutra is the foundational text of Mahayana Buddhism. This shows how the Jethawanaramaya Stupa was the hub of different Buddhist thoughts and schools. However, you can see these gold panels now at the Colombo Museum.  Also, I came to know about another fascinating thing from a monk here, that the stupa used to have a diamond in the crown. It used to turn aside lightning during the monsoon season.  3. The Gleaming White Ruwanwelisaya Stupa  The Ruwanwelisaya Stupa is most famous among the locals and followers of Buddhism.  Now, unlike the Ritigala Forest Monastery, the Ruwanwelisaya Stupa or the other stupas in the complex are live hubs of Buddhist practices.  Also, the Ruwanwelisaya Stupa is especially famous for housing the remains of Lord Buddha.  Originally, the Ruwanwelisaya Stupa was much smaller than the Jethawanaramaya Stupa. However, thanks to continuous maintenance, it now stands at a height of 100 meters.  Now, this was my experience in the ancient ruins of Anuradhapura. If you want to explore more, you can visit the Kaudulla National Park, at a distance of less than 2 hours, and the Hurulu Eco Park, at a distance of 1 hour and 50 minutes.   Location And How To Reach Anuradhapura?  Anuradhapura City is located on the banks of the Malwathu Oya. It is the capital of the central-west region of Sri Lanka and the district of Anuradhapura.  Anuradhapura is a 4-hour journey from Colombo and Kandy.  Once I explored the top attractions in Kandy, I took a minivan, which cost me LKR 1600. Now, you will also get private and public buses.  However, I had luggage and wanted to keep the schedule flexible. So, I chose the minivan.  Things To Remember For A Trip To Anuradhapura The Sun is merciless in Anuradhapura, even if you visit the Sacred City in winter. Yes, Hello Kitty Shinkansen is going to get discontinued in Japan. Now, during my last trip to Japan, a ride in this themed bullet train was surely my pookie moment.  It was an experience of a lifetime when I tried the best Osaka food and boarded the Hello Kitty Shinkansen train for a day trip to Kobe, Himeji, Okayama, Kurashiki, and Hiroshima.  However, JR West has decided to stop the operations of the Hello Kitty Shinkansen from 17th May 2026.  Now, it’s sad for everyone who loves Japanese culture. If the Japanese shrines and temples are the telltale of its history, religion, and society, the Hello Kitty Shinkansen has been a poster of the pop culture.  So, in this article, I will discuss how the beautiful 8-year-old journey of the Hello Kitty Shinkansen is going to come to an end, and what you can expect in the few days left until the last date of operation.  Hello Kitty Shinkansen: An Iconic Symbol Of Japanese Railway Branding  Hello Kitty Shinkasen started running on the Sanyō Shinkansen line on 30th June, 2018. It used to run from Shin-Osaka to Hakata (Fukuoka).  Furthermore, during this 8-year run, this themed bullet train has successfully served its purpose of reviving tourism in Japan.  Moreover, the Hello Kitty Shinkasen used 500-series bullet trains and featured the signature white-and-pink colors.  Also, the exterior was adorned with bows, the signature of Hello Kitty.  However, for the train, the bow represented a link between the cities on the route covered.  The Decor Which Made The Hello Kitty Shinkansen So Special Out of eight cars of the Hello Kitty Shinkansen, the decor of the first two cars was based on the theme.  Furthermore, the Hello Plaza in Car 1 was dedicated to exhibitions. It had exhibits dedicated to the cities crossed on the route.  Moreover, you could shop for souvenirs at the Hello Plaza.  Again, the second carriage, “KAWAII! ROOM,” was decorated in the style of Hello Kitty. The chairs, the wall art, and the ceiling were done accordingly.  Moreover, there was a photo area.  The rest of the carriage was like a normal bullet train, with subtle hints of the Hello Kitty theme.  Also, a unique melody was used for the announcement.  How Is The Farewell Event Of Hello Kitty Shinkansen Being Planned?  JR West is going to plan a series of commemorative events to bid farewell to this iconic bullet train.  As a passenger, you can leave a message on the board reserved for sharing memories. Furthermore, you can get stickers and limited edition souvenirs in the memory of the train.  Moreover, you can collect special merchandise from the Kyoto Railway Museum and specific JR West Stores. You will even find them online.  Having said that, there is still a month left for the Hello Kitty Shinkansen to get discontinued. So, let’s have a quick look at the operation days, timetable, and passes.  Hello Kitty Shinkansen Passes And Tickets You can ride the Hello Kitty Shinkansen with the Japan Rail Pass and other tickets. JR-WEST All Area Pass You can buy this single pass to explore Sanyo, Hokuriku, Hakata, and other unexplored parts of western Japan.  Furthermore, it has a validity of 7 days.  Also, the pass price for adults is 26000 Yen, and for children, it is 1300 Yen. Moreover, it is free for children from 1 to 5 years.  This is the most recommended pass for riding the Hello Kitty Shinkansen.  2. Kansai - Hiroshima Area Pass With this Kansai to Hiroshima Pass, you can enjoy unlimited rides between these two locations.  It will also include a ride on the JR West Miyajima Ferry to Miyajima Island.  Moreover, the 5-day pass for Kansai - Hiroshima will cost 17000 Yen for adults and 8500 Yen for children.  3. Hiroshima-Yamaguchi Area Pass With this pass, you can enjoy an unlimited ride between Fukuoka and Yamaguchi. What Are The Places To Visit On The Hello Kitty Shinkansen Route?  There are many stations on the Hello Kitty Bullet Train route. However, you cannot miss these places on the route.  1. Kobe I loved the Nunobiki Ropeway, which was very close to the Kobe Shinkansen station. The ropeway took me on a ride over the Nunobiki Waterfall and the beautiful Kobe Herb Garden.  It dropped us at the Observation Park, and as the name suggests, it offers amazing views of the city.  However, you can even take a local train to the city.  2. Himeji The Himeji Castle is one of the twelve original castles in Japan. It was built in 1609.  Also known as the White Heron Castle, it is the largest in Japan and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.  3. Okayama The Korakeun Garden in Okayama is beautiful. Furthermore, the Kibutsu shrine, a little far away from the town, stands out with its amazing “timber-framed corridor.” Also, don’t forget a visit to the Okayama Castle, the main tower of which was completed in 1597.  4. Kurashiki The Bikan Historical Quarter is the main attraction of Kurashiki. Once you reach Kurashiki on the bullet train, you will get off and take a local train to reach the historical center.  It is also a pretty and quaint town. So, it is ideal for relaxation.  5. Hiroshima Hiroshima is one of the historic places to visit in Japan. The Atomic Bomb Dome and the Peace Museum here remind you of the futility of war.  The Future Of Themed Bullet Trains In Japan  As a tourist or a cultural enthusiast, you may think that the discontinuation of the Hello Kitty Shinkansen has put the future of the themed bullet trains in Japan at stake.  However, that is not the case.  Japan has just got a new theme-based bullet train called Super Mario Shinkansen in 2025. Also, JR Kyushu runs this train in Kyushu.  As the name says, Super Mario Shinkansen has pictures of the main characters, Mario and Luigi. Also, it shows how Japan still believes in using themed trains as powerful tools of regional tourism promotion among children and youngsters.

The Dambulla Royal Cave Temple is gearing up for the much-acclaimed “Walk for Peace” which will start from 21st April, 2026.  Respected Paññakāra Thero and 12 other monks from the Maha Sangha will lead the walk.  Furthermore, this walk, originating in the United States, will spread the teachings of Lord Buddha, “Caratha bhikkhave carikam bahujana hitaya bahujana sukhaya lokanukampaya.” It can be roughly translated as a monk should always wander forth out of their compassion for the world and for the happiness and well-being of many.  After the inauguration of the event at Anuradhapura and special observations at Ruwanweliseya premises, the walk will start from the Dambulla Royal Cave Temple, and then it will slowly proceed to Kandy to continue the walk.  Now, it is no wonder that the Rangiri Dambulla Cave Temple has been chosen as the starting point for the walk.  With a history that goes back to the 3rd century BCE, and home to the Buddhist mural paintings and 157 statues, it remains one of the most important Buddhist landmarks in Sri Lanka.  Here is a detailed guide on my experience at Dambulla Royal Cave Temple, its significance, history, entry fee, and more!  The Dambulla Royal Cave Temple: Quick Facts  “Dambulla is an important shrine in the Buddhist religion in Sri Lanka, remarkable for its association with the long-standing and wide-spread tradition of living Buddhist ritual practices and pilgrimage for more than two millennia.” UNESCO World Heritage Convention.  Here are some quick facts about the most well-preserved and largest cave-temple complex in Sri Lanka. (Along With Some Nearby Attractions) The Dambulla Royal Cave Temple is in Dambulla Town. Now, Dambulla itself is the gateway to many places to visit in Sri Lanka.  For example, the Hurulu Eco Park is just a distance of 45 minutes from Dambulla. On the other hand, it is just 52 minutes away from the Kaudulla National Park.  Furthermore, the distance between Dambulla and Kandy is around 73 km. So, many people include a visit to the Dambulla Royal Cave Temple in their itinerary of the things to do in Kandy.  Moreover, Sigiriya is just 17 km away. So, you can plan a combined trip of a visit to the Royal Cave Temple with a hike to the  Sigiriya Rock and Pidurangala Rock.  In addition, you will have a similar experience of exploring an ancient Buddhist monastery and its remains at the Ritigala Forest Monastery, at a distance of 35 km.  Also, if you are a cricket buff like me, don’t miss a visit to the Dambulla International Cricket Ground.  How To Reach The Dambulla Royal Cave Temple? Even if you are not staying in Dambulla, Habarana, or Sigiriya can be your base.  Habarana is just 22 km away from Dambulla, and Sigiriya is just 17 km away.  From both locations, you can take a private taxi or tuk-tuk ride to reach Dambulla Town, which has the Dambulla Royal Cave Temple in the heartland.  Furthermore, from Habarana, you will get Sri Lanka Transport Board - SLTB ICT buses to Dambulla.  Nevertheless, I took a tuk-tuk from Sigiriya to Dambulla, and it cost me around 2500 LKR.  What Is The History Of The Dambulla Royal Cave Temple? As I have mentioned, the history of the Dambulla Royal Cave Temple goes back to the 3rd Century BCE.  Buddhist monks started living here, and these natural caves started functioning as monasteries.  Furthermore, in 100 BCE, King Vattagamani Abhaya (Valagamba) fled his capital and took refuge here for 15 years.  Then, out of his gratitude, he built this majestic Dambulla Royal Cave Temple.  However, most of its constructions, including the sculptures and murals, are from the Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa periods.  Also, the current interior we see is the outcome of the renovation in the 18th century. In addition, it was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991. Today, it is a part of the prestigious Cultural Triangle of Sri Lanka, along with Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, and Sigiriya Rock Fortress.  My Experience Of Visiting The Dambulla Royal Cave Temple (Things To See And Top Attractions) Before I get into the details of my experience at the Dambulla Royal Cave Temple, I want to give you a clear idea about the five main caves.  The Caves of The Dambulla Royal Cave TempleNamesMain Attractions Cave 1Devaraja LenaIt is the Temple of the King of Gods. The reclining Buddha statue here is mesmerizing.Cave 2 Maharaja LenaThis one is the largest among all caves, and it has 56 statues. Moreover, it is the Temple of the Great Kings, and don’t miss the sacred pot with the dripping water here. Cave 3Maha Alut ViharayaThe Maha Alut Viharaya is a wonderful example of 18th-century art. Furthermore, as the Great New Temple, it is home to 18th-century Kandyan-style paintings and statues.  Cave 4Paschima ViharayaIt is the western temple. Cave 5Devana Alut ViharayaIt is the second new temple in the temple complex.  However, to see these caves, you have to take 300 steps. You will not feel the fatigue anyway, as you will love the views and spotting the groups of macaques jumping through branches.  Also, once you reach the top, you will need to take off your shoes and further walk to the cave.  Here are some of the highlights of my visit to the Dambulla Royal Cave Temple.  1. Before Entering The Caves  I entered the cave temple complex, and a massive courtyard opened before my eyes. On one side of the courtyard, there was the shrine and the Bodhi Tree.  Furthermore, on the other side, there is the rock and the cave temples.  The Engraving Of Kirti Nissankamalla I found the engraving of the Kirti Nissankamalla before entering the first cave. Dated to the 12th century, it narrates the contributions of King Nissankamalla to Buddhism.  The engraving, however, is in ancient Sinhalese. So, you can ask a local guide or a local person to help you understand the details.  Or, you can read the translation of the engraving next to it.  2. The Caves  I have already introduced the caves to you. However, everywhere you look, you will find Buddhist murals, depicting the important figures and myths of Buddhism.  Furthermore, there are golden statues of Lord Buddha along the walls, and the lifelike paintings of Buddha-like figures evoke awe.  Moreover, with repeating patterns, the ceilings look kaleidoscopic.  However, the first time I experienced magnificence in these caves was when I saw the reclining Buddha statue.  The Reclining Buddha Statue (1st Cave) The reclining Buddha statue inside the first cave of the complex reminded me of the Lord Vishnu idol of Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple in Kerala, India.  In fact, in some traditions of the Hindu religion, Buddha is the ninth of the ten Avatars or incarnations of Lord Vishnu. Here, the connection felt real.  The serene expression of Lord Buddha with his head resting on a pillow made me feel peaceful. I offered some fresh lily flowers that I bought on the way up the steps.  Furthermore, the lotus flowers drawn on Lord Buddha’s feet or Buddhapada symbolize spiritual awakening, and these are among the 108 holy marks that represent the holy journey of Buddha on the earth.  The Natural Spring (The Second Cave) It was amazing to find a natural spring in the second cave, and even in the dry season, it has water.  The water of the spring drips through the ceiling, and the drops are collected in a vessel.  Furthermore, it has 56 Buddha statues, and it is the most aesthetic with stunning murals and paintings.  The Series Of Buddha Statues (The Second Cave) Again, inside Cave 2, I found a series of similar Buddha statues in a seated position, and the next one was always a bit bigger than the previous one.  However, instead of the Dhyana mudra or the meditation gesture, the statues here were seated in a Bhumisparsha mudra or as the earth witness. Thus, these statues stare directly into your eyes.  These statues looked more vibrant, and with an earthy tone, they complemented the overall aesthetics of the cave temples.  Also, don’t miss the little lily pond just outside cave 2.  The Stupa Inside The Cave (The Second Cave) The second cave has an entire Stupa built inside it.  Furthermore, the stupa is adorned with an orange robe. Various statues of Lord Buddha in a seated position surround the stupa, and these are accompanied by nagas.  These nagas or snakes play the role of a protector or guardian when Lord Buddha is meditating. Moreover, they symbolize the subjugation of worldly desires and spiritual awakening.  The 3rd cave also has many statues, and the fourth one is smaller with a stupa inside. After exploring the 3rd, 4th, and 5th caves, I finally approached the end of the cave.  You know what stayed with me, that the temples are still alive and they have made people from a different millennium, with humans of today in the same row with the thread of devotion, peace, and love.  Once again, with non-violence and peace having so much power, the current geopolitical situations only look like futility.  3. The Viewpoint  As I got out of the caves, I found a quaint viewpoint behind the entry counter. I saw many young tourists flocking there, and the views from there were simply amazing.  I stopped and took some snaps.  4. The Golden Buddha Statue  I consciously chose a different route while getting down from the caves. I found many aesthetic lampposts along the way.  However, I did not follow the lamp posts and took the left to walk down, and the road was quite steep.  However, the reward I got at the end of the road was absolutely worth it.  There was a magnificent golden Buddha statue on the elaborately designed building of the museum complex.  I could not explore the museum due to a time crunch, and I did not want to dilute what I saw and how I felt at the cave temples. What Is The Best Time To Visit The Dambulla Royal Cave Temple? In a day, early mornings, from 7 AM to 9 AM, or late afternoons, after 4 PM, are the best hours for visiting the Dambulla Royal Cave.  Furthermore, December to February are the best months for visiting these cave temples due to dry and pleasant weather conditions.
