Driving To Rio Celeste In Costa Rica From La Fortuna Or Liberia

Park your car at the Tenorio Volcano National Park lot at 8:15, and the trail to the Rio Celeste waterfall is yours, shared with birds and a few early hikers. The tour vans from La Fortuna and Guanacaste don’t start pulling in until around 10 a.m. And that gap of nearly 2 hours is the best reason to drive yourself.

Geography is the second reason. Rio Celeste lies in quiet farm country between the Arenal area and Guanacaste, near the small towns of Bijagua and Katira, with only one park entrance.

But public transport barely reaches it (from the park you’d have to take a taxi to Upala, then catch a bus toward Ciudad Quesada). With a rental car, it turns into a relaxed morning stop on a day you’d be on the road anyway.

Which road from La Fortuna, Liberia, or San José?

Leaving La Fortuna, you head toward El Tanque on Route 142 and then join Route 4. You’ll stay on Route 4 northbound for about 40 km, past San Rafael de Guatuso, until a park sign appears at Samen.

Turn left there. The paved road runs about 19 km through Maquencal and the village of Rio Celeste, and the entrance sits on your left just after a bridge over the river (look down while you cross, because on a good day the water is already pale blue under you).

Waze and Google Maps both get this one wrong. Near San Rafael de Guatuso, they’ll try to turn you left off Route 4 onto an older road, and you should simply ignore them and carry on to Samen, where the pavement begins.

Coming from Liberia, Route 1 (the Inter-American Highway) takes you south. Roughly 6 km short of Cañas, exit, go under the highway, and pick up Route 6 toward Upala.

Route 6 is good asphalt for the 22 km or so to Bijagua. Once in town, the park sign tells you to turn right, and from there the side road is paved right up to the entrance. It’s steep in spots, though; it turns slick once it rains, and you’ll cross a couple of one-lane bridges where whoever is already on the bridge has the right of way.

What about San José and SJO airport? Plan on about 3.5 hours, which is why most people landing at SJO slot Rio Celeste into the drive from Arenal to the Guanacaste beaches.

Starting pointMain roadsDrive timeRoad surfaceWhat to watch
La FortunaRoute 142, then Route 4, turn at SamenAbout 1.5 hoursPaved the whole wayApps sending you off Route 4 too soon
Liberia (LIR)Route 1, then Route 6, turn at BijaguaAbout 1.5 hoursPaved, with a steep last stretchSlippery climb after rain and one-lane bridges
BijaguaPark road from the town centerAbout 20 minutesPavedSteep, and slick in the wet

Older trip reports still circulate with stories of broken roads, spinning tires and passengers climbing out to walk uphill so the car could make it. Those days are gone. Both approaches are paved now, and neither one requires a 4×4.

But a 4×4 can still earn its keep. That Bijagua climb is exactly the sort of wet, steep pavement where a compact SUV with decent ground clearance feels a lot calmer than a small sedan, and the potholes multiply in September and October, the 2 wettest months of the year.

And if Rio Celeste is just one stop on a bigger loop with gravel elsewhere, rent for the roughest road on your itinerary rather than for this one.

Flying into Liberia makes things simple, since you can collect the car at the airport and drive straight south toward Bijagua. Jumbo Car has an office near LIR with a free shuttle from the terminal. Its quoted prices already include the mandatory insurance, and cancellation is free up to 24 hours before pick-up.

When you compare a rental car costa rica booking with them, you’ll see a fleet that goes from economy cars up to a Suzuki Vitara or a Kia Sportage 4×4.

Tickets, parking, and park rules

Most people who get turned away at Río Celeste get turned away over tickets. SINAC, the national park service, sells them online only and in advance, and there’s no booth at the gate to bail you out.

You’ll have to create an account before you can buy (the site has an English version). Do it the night before from your hotel Wi-Fi, because cell coverage around the park drops in and out and the parking lot is a bad place to discover that.

ItemWhat applies
Entry, foreign visitors$12 per adult, $5 per child aged 2 to 12
Opening hoursDaily from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., last entry at 2 p.m.
ParkingRoughly ₡2,000 to ₡3,000, cash on arrival
RestroomsEntrance only, nothing along the trail
SwimmingBanned everywhere in the park
Food and bottlesNo food (babies get some leeway), no single-use plastic bottles

Rangers do go through bags, and anything on the banned list stays with them. Bring a refillable bottle and keep a photo of your passport on your phone, since they sometimes ask for it.

Parking is easy. The main lot next to the ranger station is large, overflow spaces sit across the road, and attendants keep an eye on the cars (still, leave nothing in sight).

But before you plan a whole day around the waterfall, check whether you can see it. In August 2025 a landslide buried the bottom of the 250 steps leading down to the falls. As of early 2026 the lower stairs and the viewing platform hadn’t reopened, which meant you only got a view from partway down. Look at the SINAC site and recent visitor reports during the week before your trip.

The trail and how long it takes

You leave the ranger station on a flat paved path that turns to gravel after about 15 minutes. After that it’s ordinary dirt trail, with a stream to cross and a few short, steep pitches, and roughly 30 minutes in you’re standing at the top of the waterfall stairs.

The falls drop about 90 meters into a deep blue pool. A lot of people see that and head back.

And that’s a fair choice, because the second half is rougher going, all roots, mud and steep climbs and descents. It takes you past the Poza Azul pool, then the Borbollones, where the water bubbles and you’ll catch a whiff of sulfur. It ends at Los Teñideros, the spot where two clear rivers meet and the water goes blue. Is it worth the extra slog? If you have the legs and the time, yes, since the color change is the reason the river has its name.

There’s no loop. The trail stops at Los Teñideros and you retrace your steps, so budget 1 to 2 hours if you only want the waterfall and 3 to 4 hours for the full trail.

Wear shoes you’re happy to throw away afterward. This flank of the volcano gets heavy rain, and the mud on the far section will pull a sneaker clean off your foot.

When the water is bluest

December to April is your window if you have any choice. Rain stirs sediment into the river, and a few wet days in a row turn that turquoise into something dull and milky.

Stuck with the rainy season? Then go the morning after a dry night, never the afternoon after a storm.

The hour you show up counts too, though for other reasons. Get there at 8 or 8:30 a.m. and you’re ahead of the tour buses that roll in around 10 a.m., walking in cooler air (the low 70s °F early on). And because last entry is 2 p.m., an early start leaves enough daylight to drive on to Liberia or back to La Fortuna without doing the gravel stretches in the dark.

Frequently asked questions about Rio Celeste

Is Rio Celeste still closed?

The park itself was open in early 2026. But the lower stairs and the waterfall viewing platform stayed shut after a landslide in 2025, so look at the SINAC page again a day or two before you go.

Can you swim in the Rio Celeste?

No, not within Tenorio Volcano National Park, Poza Azul included. If you want to get wet, the tubing tours run on stretches of river outside the park boundary.

How long does it take to hike to Rio Celeste?

Count on roughly 30 minutes from the ranger station to the top of the waterfall stairs, then 250 steps down. Walking the whole trail out to Los Teñideros and back takes 3 to 4 hours.

Is it worth going to Rio Celeste, Costa Rica?

In the dry season with an early start, yes. It sits between Arenal and Guanacaste, so with a car it fits into a single morning on the way. After a week of heavy rain, the color washes out, and skipping it is a reasonable call.

Are You Planning A Trip To Osaka? This Is Your Quintessential Guide

BY  Sibashree Aug 11, 2025

The city of Osaka is just a very fast Shinkansen away from the capital of the country. Therefore, a trip to Osaka falls well within the sphere of convenience for the tourists. Osaka is different from the capital city of Japan in various ways. As a result, the tourists should always try to explore. The city provides you with friendly locals, the best nightlife, and most importantly, some of the most delicious food in Japan. If Tokyo’s your flashy, fast-talking friend, then Osaka is the one who drags you out for late-night snacks and somehow knows every back alley in town. You’ve probably seen its neon glow on Instagram, maybe even heard whispers about the food scene — and yeah, it’s all true. Osaka just… does things differently. Osaka has a historical side. Therefore, tourists visiting Japan should enjoy visiting the historical side of Osaka. Places like the Osaka place overall provide the tourists with an enriching experience while they are on their trip to Osaka. The castle serves as a great place to explore Japanese History and understand the elegance of Japanese architecture. Moreover, the tourists should visit the place at any time of the year. However, the cherry blossom season in April serves as the best time to visit the place, as it reflects a different aura. The Sakura blooms in the month of April. Therefore, the beauty of the place is enhanced. This time of the year is also a pleasant time to visit the place. Therefore, the tourists should visit Osaka during this time of the year. But here’s the deal: as easygoing as the city feels, a smooth trip still needs a bit of planning. From navigating the city to finding the luxury hotels in Osaka Japan, it’s a lot of work!  I’ve learned the hard way (missed trains, wrong hotel location — you name it), so here’s the stuff I wish I’d known first. The Best Time To Visit Osaka People can take a trip to Osaka during the month of April when the Sakura blooms. However, tourists can visit the place throughout the year as there is no specific right time to visit the place. Honestly? There’s no “bad” time to go. It’s more about what kind of trip you’re after. Spring (March–May) is just ridiculous — cherry blossoms are everywhere, like someone dumped pink confetti all over the city. The weather’s dreamy. But fair warning, everyone knows it, so expect packed parks and pricier everything. Autumn, from September to November, is kind of my favorite. Milder temps, fewer people, and it’s easier to get a last-minute table somewhere. Only hitch? Rain likes to crash the party now and then. Summer — from June to August — is sticky. Like, humid humid. But oh man, the festivals. Fireworks lighting up the river, food stalls lined up for blocks… It’s electric. You just have to embrace the sweat. Winter (December–February) is quieter. Not freezing like Hokkaido, but cool enough to make hot bowls of ramen taste even better. And hey, no elbow fights in the subway. Planning Your Trip to Osaka  If you’re thinking, “I’ll just wing it,” um… You could, but Osaka’s popular enough now that winging it often means missing out. The tourists should always plan their trips in advance. Planning trips early allows people to visit every place with time on their hands. Planning trips early also allows people to ensure that they are not spending more than what is required. Here are a few things that you can incorporate to ensure that you have a concrete plan. 1. Find The Cheapest Flights. Book early. Like… months early. Especially if you’ve got your heart set on spring, check different dates, be okay with weird flight hours — that 2 a.m. arrival might save you enough cash to splurge on sushi later. 2. Treat Yourself To A Good Hotel. Cut corners on flights? Great. Put that extra into a hotel you’ll actually enjoy being in. Swissotel Nankai Osaka is right above Namba Station, which means you can roll out of bed and basically be anywhere in the city within minutes. Bonus: Some rooms have that traditional Ryokan vibe, if you want a bit of “old Japan” without ditching modern comforts. 3. Book Restaurants Ahead Of Time. If you’ve stalked a restaurant on Instagram, book it. Now. Osaka’s food scene doesn’t mess around. But leave room for surprises — some of my best meals came from random alley spots selling takoyaki or okonomiyaki for a few hundred yen. 4. Create An Itinerary To Optimise Your Time And Experience In The City. Universal Studios Japan? Give it a day, minimum. Then work in Osaka Castle, Kuromon Market (snack heaven), and Dotonbori at night for the lights and chaos. Got extra days? Hop over to Nara for deer selfies or Kyoto for temples. Trains make it easy 5. Learn How To Navigate The City’s Transportation System. Osaka’s trains and subways are fast, clean, and — once you figure out the map — kinda addictive to use. The Osaka Amazing Pass is worth it for unlimited rides. Thinking of city-hopping? Get the JR Pass and thank yourself later. Oh, and pack smart. Summer’s basically a sauna. Other seasons? Layers are your friend — evenings can get chilly even if the day’s warm. Things To Consider Before Taking A Trip To Osaka The thing about Osaka is that it sticks with you. It could be the food, the late-night streets, or the fact that locals have this warm, “come on in” energy. Plan it well, and you’ll already be plotting your return before your flight home even boards. And yeah, if you like the sound of rolling straight from the train into your hotel, Swissotel Nankai Osaka makes that ridiculously easy. The tourists find Osaka to be one of the most important cities in Japan. However, tourists should ensure proper planning before they visit Osaka. Planning early helps tourists to spend less during their trip to Osaka. Osaka is one of the most important and culturally rich places in Japan. Osaka is also close to the Japanese capital. Therefore, it is convenient to visit the place throughout the year.

Cost-Effective Limo Options For Chicago Airport Transfers

BY  Barsha Mar 4, 2026

Airport transfers in Chicago?  For many tourists,  finding a luxurious and cost-effective limo service can be an impossible quest.  You can be a business traveler, a leisure tourist, or just someone who wants to travel from the airport and reach a specific destination.  A reliable and cost-effective limo service can deliver real comfort, ease, and a touch of class without burning a hole in the pocket.  Hi, in today’s blog, I will talk about why cost-effective limo services are important when you are in a new city like Chicago.  I will also share some local tips for booking the cost-effective limo services and some of the best options in Chicago.  Why You Need A Cost-Effective Limo Service In Chicago?  You cannot think that limo rides are just for the proms or the big rides anymore! The cost-effective limo services are now blurring the line between affordability and luxury for tourists.  With the smart hacks, these limos can, in fact, be the most budget-friendly way to get to and from Chicago’s major airports.  These are especially beneficial for business travelers who are navigating busy meetings and events. When the transport becomes hassle-free, you can focus more on the preparation for the presentation and gathering yourself before a critical business meeting.  Here is more about why a cost-effective limo service is the ultimate choice for business travelers.  1. Comfort And Convenience You are feeling drained after a long flight, and then the Chicago traffic hits you hard. The last thing you want now is wrestling through the maps and hitting the wrong zones.  Limo crews pick up from your doorstep. They even adjust the timing of the pickup based on the change in the flight arrival.  Also, they know the shortcuts and updates related to local traffic.  In addition, Limo fleets have all the amenities. You will get cold water, Wi-Fi, comfortable seats, and complete privacy.  So, no sweat and stress! And a chance to utilize your travel time the way you want. You can relax and prepare for the meeting or event.  2. Affordable Group Travel If you are traveling in a group or have no qualms about sharing your ride with other people, you can opt for a group travel service.  You can divide the cost, and the expense is often the same as Uber or other local cabs. However, these services are more comfortable and dependable.  Overall, you enjoy the luxury of a Limo service but without the budget overshoot.  3. Reliable And Punctual Service During peak hours or peak tourist seasons, finding a rideshare can be a task. Also, you may have to negotiate a lot as they can ask for unreasonable fares.  However, with a Limo service, you will always get a ride on time.  These cabs will track the arrival of your flight and will reschedule the service if there are delays. You are already exhausted when your flight is delayed.  With a trusted and cost-effective limo service, you at least don’t need to panic over how you will make it to your hotel or meeting venue from the airport.  4. Fixed Pricing  Local taxis and cab booking apps will bombard you with surcharge prices in the peak hours or when the demands are high.  However, the cost-effective Limo services stick to flat rates.  You will have to make an upfront payment, and the charges and the budget will remain the same irrespective of the change of the schedule or route.  Thus, there will be little to no impact on your travel budget.  Affordable Limo Services In Chicago Here are some wallet-friendly picks for airport transfers to and from O’Hare International Airport (ORD) and Midway International Airport (MDW). 1. Shared Limo Services Shared rides pool passengers going your way, slashing costs big time. Yes, there will be a couple of extra stops, but you will get to share the cost.  2. Economy And Standard Sedans The economy sedans are snazzy and plush like full Limos. However, the price tag is almost half.  So, you can enjoy the luxury without burning a hole in your pocket.  3. Point-To-Point Limo Service You can avoid the high rates of hourly hires. You can book a Limo for a point-to-point fixed route fee.  These services are ideal if you are just going from the airport to the hotel without any detours. Many limo services provide online booking with straight-up prices and easy travel experiences.  4. Corporate And Frequent Traveler Discounts Many limo services offer discounts for frequent travelers or business clients. If you travel regularly for work, signing up for a loyalty program or corporate account can help you save money on each ride.  Companies often provide perks such as priority booking, complimentary upgrades, and discounted fares for repeat customers. 5. Off-Peak Discounts Booking a limo during non-peak hours can also reduce costs.  Prices tend to be lower during weekdays and non-rush hours, making it a great strategy for budget-conscious travelers.  If your flight schedule allows for flexible travel times, you can take advantage of these discounted rates and still enjoy the benefits of a premium limo experience. Tips For Booking An Affordable Limo In Chicago Limos can be bargains, but wanna lock in the steal? Here's the playbook, straight talk: 1. Book In Advance Procrastinate, and prices spike. Book early, grab discounts, nail low rates. Online systems spit instant quotes—savings for planning, you know? 2. Compare Prices Scan reviews for solid deals. Third-party sites flag honest crews with clear costs and top service. So, there is no guesswork. 3. Look For Promotions And Coupons Many limo companies offer online discounts, seasonal promotions, and first-time customer coupons.  Checking their website or signing up for email alerts can help you catch these deals.  Some companies also offer referral discounts, so if you recommend their service to others, you may receive future savings. 4. Consider Ride-Sharing With Family Or Friends Group trip? Chip in for a shared limo.  They've got SUVs, vans for the squad, cheaper per head than piling into Ubers. 5. Avoid Extra Fees Make sure to check for any hidden fees, such as fuel surcharges, gratuity, or extra stop charges.  Ask for a full price breakdown before confirming your booking.  Some companies may also charge for excessive wait times, so confirm their policies to avoid unexpected costs. As the monumental centerpiece, Denali adds to the popularity of Denali National Park.  Are you also planning a climb on Denali or Mount McKinley? Here are the things you must know before you make an attempt. Many people talk about the magnificence of the peak and its beauty. I will primarily discuss how you will prepare and conduct yourself for the pain-stricken journey and sail through it.  Climbing Denali in Denali National Park (How You Will Prepare Yourself) Many people find climbing Denali in Alaska’s Denali National Park more difficult than climbing Mount Everest. Extreme weather conditions, steep terrains, and fixed lines make this exotic peak one of the deadliest in the world.  So, we must be particular about our preparations, and these are the areas where we need to prepare ourselves.  Physical Preparedness And Endurance Physical preparedness and endurance are the most crucial things while climbing Denali. Your training activities will include the following.  Fitness Test  VO₂ Max Test Carrying Packs Weighing around 55lbs Hike Training at Sea Level Strength Building While attending a training session for physical strength and endurance, take a step-by-step approach to success.  Working On Team Dynamics And Preparations Traveling solo is not a great idea when it comes to conquering Denali. Maintain clear communication, mutual respect, trust, and a supportive environment within the team. Trust me! Denali will challenge you in every possible way. You don’t want to add to it by having a discord within the team.  Make Sure To Have The Correct Mental Training Reaching the Denali summit is going to be tough. Water further helps in digesting your food.  Moreover, as you climb up, the air starts getting dry, and rapid breathing and an increased heartbeat promote faster loss of water from our bodies.  Along with drinking 3-4 liters of water every day, you will need to take multivitamins, electrolytes, and hyperhydration solutions available in sachets.  Work On Gear Selection And Preparation Pick and prepare your gear right for climbing Denali in Denali National Park. You at least need an intermediate-level skill and glacier experience for the trek.  However, a solo climber to Denali died recently, just as the summer climb season this year kickstarted. The body of the deceased climber was found on 20th May 2024. (Source) So, commit to the climb only if you have the desired mental and physical fitness, have the expertise and experience, and have proper safety measures in place.
