Then, the Pearl River Delta is to the south and east.  It was a Portuguese colony once, but now it is an autonomous territory. Also, even today, Macau shows an influence of ancient Chinese culture.  However, this ancient Chinese culture has created a fusion with new-age European influence. The cuisine of Macau explains it best, and that’s why you need to visit the best restaurants in Macau. You will especially experience a blend of Cantonese and Portuguese flavors.  What Are The Top 10 Restaurants In Macau?  Macau has many top restaurants to eat at. Every guest could see how the executive chefs interpret the classic cuisine.  I loved the red curry prawn bisque there, and they make brilliant risotto.  5. Le Buffet At Le Buffet, I saw the chefs making the European delicacies at live counters.  While it is very European in the cuisine served, the decor is Persian with muted colors and grilled walls.  Furthermore, the desserts at Le Buffet deserve special mention, and the mini Eiffel Tower dessert tower is the most creative among them. Beyond The Restaurant Scene: Macau's Street Food And Local Markets  While the luxury dining rooms and the budget-friendly sit-down restaurants tell one story about Macau, the street stalls and wet markets tell another.   If you want to understand how Macau actually eats on a daily basis, you have to step away from the hotel lobbies and into the narrow lanes of the historic centre.  Rua da Felicidade, once the city's red-light district, is now lined with red-shuttered shopfronts selling the following must-try delicacies.  Pork Chop Buns  Almond Cookies  Dried Meat (Rou Gan)   Among these, the dried meat is grilled to order over charcoal.   Vendors slice it thin, char it slightly, and hand it to you wrapped in paper. Kurunegala has recently been in the news due to infrastructure development. The cabinet meeting approved the construction of stage 1 of phase 4 of the Central Expressway Project.  It will connect Kurunegala and Dambulla, which is famous for the iconic Dambulla Royal Cave Temple.  The Road Development Authority (RDA) has further confirmed that the extension work will start in November 2026.  However, Kurunegala has always been a melting pot for the cultural hub of Kandy, Puttalam, Negombo, and the country’s capital, Colombo.  Also, as the capital of the northwestern province, it holds massive strategic and political importance.  Where Is Kurunegala?  Kurunegala is in the northwestern interior of Sri Lanka.  As the capital of the Kurunegala District and the North-Western Province, it also functions as a major transportation hub.  Furthermore, it is around 94 kilometers northeast of the country’s capital, Colombo. In addition, the distance between Kandy and Kurunegala is just 42 km.  How To Reach Kurunegala? While traveling from Colombo, Kandy is the gateway to reach Kurunegala. I took a bus from the Kandy Goods Shed Bus Stand.  Buses run regularly from Kandy to Kurunegala, or route 602, and the journey via Katugastota-Kurunegala Road (A10) takes around 1.5 to 2 hours.  I traveled in a regular bus, and the ticket price was LKR 200. Semi-luxury, luxury, and super-luxury bus options are also available on this route, and the ticket prices will be between LKR 350 and LKR 600.  Why Is Kurunegala Famous? Ancient Royal History! Majestic Geology!  An Agricultural Powerhouse!  These are the three main reasons behind Kurunegala’s prominent position in the tourism landscape of Sri Lanka.  The Capital Of Ancient Kingdoms From the late 13th to the early 14th century, Kurunegala was the royal Capital of Sri Lanka.  It was known as Hasthishaila-pura earlier. Under the rule of kings like Buwanekabahu II and Parakramabahu IV, it safeguarded the Sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha. Also, it has the Yapahuwa rock fortress. Other historic ruins and citadels include the silver cave temple of Ridi Viharaya and the ancient ruins of Panduwasnuwara.  The City Of Animal Rocks A ring of eight massive ancient granite outcrops encircles Kurunegala. These granite outcrops, suddenly rising from the plains, look surreal.  Furthermore, my guide told me a fascinating folklore about these outcrops.  “Kurunegala once faced a severe drought. Then, a witch turned water-guzzling animals into stone. In fact, some of these rocks are famously named after the animals their silhouettes resemble.” For example, Athugala looks like an elephant, Ibbagala looks like the back of a tortoise, and Andagala resembles an eel.  The Heart Of The Coconut Triangle Kurunegala, like Kalutara, is famous for rubber estates. It also has endless coconut plantations.  In fact, it is located inside the “Coconut Triangle" of Sri Lanka. So, overall, it is a prominent commercial hub for agricultural production.  Moreover, it is the cradle of Selyn, Sri Lanka’s only fair-trade-guaranteed handloom company. So, it is also a critical center for preserving the island's traditional textile heritage. What Are The Places To Visit In Kurunegala?  Kurunegala offers the ultimate off-the-beaten-path experience in Sri Lanka.  For me, the most fascinating places to visit here are the ancient rocks and the spiritual landmarks.  While these connect you to history, the scenic waterways and modern sanctuaries allow you to unwind and soak in the local vibe.  1. Athugala Rock Temple  Athugala dominates the skyline of Kurunegala.  This outcrop has a height of 325 meters, and it gets its name from its uncanny resemblance to a giant, crouching elephant Atha means elephant and Gala means rock. Furthermore, once I reached the summit, I found a magnificent Buddha statue of 88 feet in height.  You can take a car ride to reach the summit. However, I preferred a trek through the stone steps.  Fortunately, I reached the summit at sunset. So, the experience was magical.  2. Ridi Vihariya Or The Silver Temple  Ridi Viharaya connects us to the 2nd century BCE. This ancient cave temple is around 20 kilometers away from the main town in Rideegama.  King Dutugemunu discovered a rich vein of silver ore here. Then he used the silver ore to finance the construction of the famous Ruwanweli Maha Seya in Anuradhapura. Furthermore, Ridi Vihariya is hidden by rocky cliffs and forest cover. Also, it is home to a magnificent reclining Buddha statue, Kandyan-era frescoes, and ivory carvings.  3. Yapahuwa Rock Fortress The Yapahuwa Rock Fortress is often compared to the Sigiriya Rock Fortress.  Yapahuwa was the capital of Sri Lanka under King Bhuvanekabahu I in the late 13th century.  Furthermore, the temple is constructed against a sheer, 200-meter-high granite rock that juts dramatically out of the surrounding jungle. Moreover, it has a highly ornamental staircase. Stone lions and intricate carvings adorn the path.  What is more fascinating than these steps, which once led to the royal palace and the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic? 4. Panduwasnuwara Ancient City Panduwasnuwara, which served as a temporary capital in the 12th century, is a dramatic ruin site. It has a well-defined citadel surrounded by protective moats and thick ramparts. Furthermore, inside the citadel, there are the foundations of a two-tiered royal palace. The palace is complete with ancient latrines and footings for wooden pillars. However, the Ektem Maligaya, or the perfectly circular tower, was the most fascinating feature of the Panduwasnuwara ancient city.  Local folklore links it to romantic legends of hidden princesses. Also, historians believe it was used by King Parakramabahu for swearing-in allegiance rituals. 5. Kurunegala Lake (Rantalia Tank) Kurunegala Lake is the ultimate place to unwind after a busy day. It is at the foot of the animal rocks.  I loved walking along the well-paved path hugging the banks. You can also do a pedal-boat ride on the lake.  Furthermore, you can just relax sitting in the nearby restaurants and trying authentic Sri Lankan cuisine.  6. Arankele Forest Hermitage Arankele is a meditation retreat. It was originally built for austere Buddhist monks, and with untouched jungle, it still exudes a strong spiritual vibe.  As I walked through the stone-paved paths, I came across the ancient Padhanagharas, or meditation halls, I also saw sun-dappled ponds, cave dwellings, and Jantagharas, or the houses for hot water baths.  The hermitage is covered by a dense canopy, keeping it quiet and cool. Here, you will only listen to distant bird calls and the rustle of leaves. Matara, the second-largest city in southern Sri Lanka, is an important gateway to Dickwella Beach, Hiriketiya Beach, or Talalla Beach.   However, beyond that, Matara is a place where the Dutch colonial heritage meets vibrant culture.  Now, talking about this part of Sri Lanka, places such as Mirissa or Galle get more prominence.  However, as I have also mentioned on my blog on Talalla Beach, Matara felt more intimate.  First of all, it was not tourist-heavy, and it is yet to get out of its shell of a hidden gem. Secondly, from beaches to historical landmarks and spiritual retreats, you will find everything in and around Matara.  So, in this blog, I will talk about the places to visit in Matara in detail.  What Are The Best Places To Visit In Matara?  Matara is now gearing up for the Sri Buddha Year 2570 State Vesak Festival on 27th May 2026.   It will take place at the Midellawala Ancient Temple premises at Thihagoda in Matara.  The program involves a week-long celebration and will continue till 2nd June 2026.  From moral teaching to spiritual learning and sessions on environmental conservation, this week will be significant.  Nevertheless, if you are in Matara, do not forget to visit these places.  1. Polhena Beach: Swim, Snorkel, And Relax Polhena Beach impresses at first sight with its calm water. The water here is shallow, making it one of the most family-friendly beaches in Sri Lanka.  Furthermore, the protected coral reef here makes it ideal for snorkeling, even for beginners.  When you snorkel or swim here, you can find many species of reef fish. I could even spot a few sea turtles here as I walked a few meters from the shore.  Above all, Polhena Beach is a great place to unwind. Also, watching the sunset here was a wonderful experience, with the sky changing colors and those colors reflecting in the water.  2. Matara Fort: A Must-Visit For A History Buff  If you are fascinated by the colonial history of Sri Lanka, Matara Fort is a must-visit.  You know, the Galle Fort is iconic. However, the Matara Fort also has a history of Portuguese and Dutch colonialism in this part of the world.  The Portuguese built this fort, and later in the 17th century, the Dutch reinforced it.  Furthermore, the best part of the Matara Fort is how it still has an active presence in the daily life of the town.  There are schools, government offices, and shops inside the wall. Moreover, when I arrived, I heard the noise of local boys who were playing cricket inside the fort.  I started talking to them. From Sangakkara to the rising P Nissanka, we covered a lot of players from the country in our discussion.  It was a fun interaction. Now, talking about cricket has been one of the most important things to do in Sri Lanka for me.  Again, as I walked through the fort, I visited the old Dutch church, which was built in 1706. Moreover, from the Matara Fort, I enjoyed amazing views of the Indian Ocean.  Being a public district, the fort does not have an entry fee, and you can enjoy a walk anytime you want.  3. Paravi Duwa Temple: One Of The Best Spiritual Places To Visit In Matara  The floating temple, or the Paravi Duwa Temple, is on a small island called Pigeon Island or Paravi Duwa.  You have to walk through the footbridge connecting the mainland and the island. If Matara Fort offers you an insight into the region’s history, this floating temple is all about serenity.  The temple has many stunning Buddha statues and a golden Stupa. However, the most fascinating thing is the replica of the footprint on Adam’s Peak.  Furthermore, here, you will enjoy a stunning coastal backdrop.   The temple remains open from 6 AM to 6 PM, and it is best if you walk across the bridge at sunrise.  4. Weherahena Temple: A Proud Example Of Modern Buddhist Architecture  On the east side of Matara, the Weherahena Temple has the biggest seated Buddha statue in Sri Lanka.  The statue is 39 meters tall, and here you will find an underground tunnel.  Now, walking through the tunnel is a fascinating experience. There, you will see more than 200 murals about the life of Lord Buddha.  Moreover, the tunnel remains open from 6 AM to 8 PM.  5. Star Fort: A Dutch Colonial Heritage  The Star Fort, close to the Matara Fort, originally went by the name of Redoute Van Eck.  It is a hidden gem in Matara, but the architecture here is equally fascinating.  Furthermore, the fort gets its name from its unique six-pointed star shape. Built in 1765, the fort had a strategic position to prevent attacks from the land.  The Matara Fort, however, was more instrumental in protecting against attacks from the sea.  Also, you must not miss a visit to the Star Fort museum, which offers insights into the Dutch colonial history of Sri Lanka.  The fort remains open from 9 AM to 4 PM, and I had to pay an entry fee of around ₹100.  6. Dondra Head Lighthouse: Sri Lanka’s Southernmost Part  I took a short tuk-tuk ride from Matara to Dondra, the southernmost part of Sri Lanka.  The Dondra Lighthouse, with a height of 49 meters, is the tallest lighthouse in the country. This 1889 fort offers an amazing view of the Indian Ocean.  However, they did not allow visitors to climb up the lighthouse. So, instead, you can enjoy a coastal walk and take the best snaps for your socials.  7. Matara Local Markets: Offering Insights About Local Culture And Flavors  I always believe that to know a place, you have to explore its local markets. The Matara local market smells of handicrafts, tropical fruits, and spices.  Moreover, here, you will enjoy prawn fritters or isso wade and pol sambol, even kottu roti, the authentic delicacies of Sri Lanka.  Furthermore, despite the language barrier, the crowd there was so friendly. Also, knowing I am from India, some of them even shared how they feel about the solidarity.  So, the next time you are in Matara, don’t just treat it as a stopover for the popular southern Sri Lankan beaches.  Try to soak in the history, culture, and spiritual vibe of this beautiful coastal town.
