The Great Kobuk Sand Dunes, Hunt River Dunes, and Little Kobuk Sand Dunes here cover a mesmerizing 20,000 acres of area in the park.   Today, hiking through these dunes is one of the most popular activities in the Kobuk Valley National Park.   While it is visually unusual or unexpected to see sand dunes in an Arctic National Park, you also need to understand that the Arctic region gets very little rainfall every year. Around 28000 years ago, glaciers in the mountains formed. I have already discussed how the glaciers ground the rocks and wind deposited them in the Kobuk Valley.   Further, approximately 14000 years ago, the glaciers made a massive retreat. As a result, there were 200,000 acres of sandy land formation on the river banks. Complex holocene activities and geomorphic preservations keep the sand dune field at the Kobuk Valley National Park active or alive. Along with the Kobuk Valley, small lakes in the park have also accumulated sand over thousands of years.   However, most of the landscape today is occupied by the vegetation of the national park, and the sand dune area consists of only 20,000 acres. The vegetation found here consists of the following varieties.  Wild rye  Grasses  Sedges  Kobuk locoweed  Wildflowers blooming occasionally  These species grow on the shifting sand, and they function as stabilizing agents. You can see shrubs, lichens, mosses, and algae following this vegetation. Finally, there are spruce, birch, and aspen trees covering the landscape.    The slopes of the Kobuk Valley sand dunes are the only place where Kobuk locoweeds grow. These plants belong to the pea family, and they are known for their purple flowers. According to National Park Service data, around 250,000 caribou pass through this national park annually.   No wonder that the Kobuk Valley National Park is one of the “last great migrations” remaining in the world. At the same time, caribou skin hide is extensively used to make parka jackets to combat Arctic winter. They also make mukluks or boots using reindeer skin to walk through the snow.   Further, the local people made baskets using birch and willow. Traveling from Rome to Amalfi Coast is easy thanks to the availability of diverse public transportation.  So, if you want to give the notorious crowd in the Italian capital a miss, you can choose the enchanting coast.  Here is more about traveling the Rome to Amalfi Coast distance of around 278 km.  A Few Things To Remember Before Planning A Rome To Amalfi Coast Trip  If you are a first timer, you may find reaching the Amalfi Coast difficult. Otherwise, the tickets for your chosen slot may become unavailable, or the ticket price can shoot up.  3. Enjoy A Ferry Ride From Salerno  If you are traveling from Rome, Salerno is the most convenient gateway to exploring the Amalfi Coast.  You will get the Sita buses easily from Salerno to reach the beautiful villages on the coast.  However, to make the journey unforgettable, you can try this trick.  The Salerno Railway Station, or Stazione di Salerno, is located at a distance of just 900 meters from the Piazza della Concordia or tourist port.  You can take a short walk for 10 minutes and then board Travelmar ferries to explore Amalfi by sea.  Multiple ferry rides are available on this route, and the ticket price is just 12,00 € for an adult.  4. Traveling From Rome To Amalfi Coast By Train  As I have mentioned, traveling by the intercity or high-speed trains is the best option for a trip to the Amalfi Coast from Rome.  Italia Rail has enlisted 58 high-speed trains on the route, and they help you cover the distance in just 1 hour and 26 minutes.  Moreover, the ticket price for these train rides starts from $12.  Furthermore, Rail Europe runs multiple trains on this route, and the first one leaves Rome at 6:26 AM and reaches Salerno at 9:23 AM.  Also, the fastest Rail Europe train on this route leaves at 7:30 AM and reaches at 9:05 AM.  The ticket price for these trains ranges between 25 and 59 Euros.  2. From Rome To Amalfi Coast Via Salerno  From Salerno railway station, you can walk for five minutes and find the Sita Bus Terminal. Also, from here, you will find buses to all the towns on the Amalfi Coast.  However, these buses are very busy during the summer months.  So, for a more peaceful and comfortable journey, you can reach the Piazza della Concordia.  From there, you will get ferries to the Amalfi Coast.
