For me, the Jaffna food tour was like walking into the locals' way of life. If the Jaffna temples show how the city is sincere about its culture, the food, and the art of having it, they show how rooted the entire Tamil community in Jaffna is.  How they mix the rice and curry with their right hands and consume the food is an art you will love, and it is the way to truly appreciate the flavor profile.  Furthermore, Jaffna has maintained its spicy soul in food despite years of colonization by European forces and civil wars. The Tamil cuisine here is not similar to the coconut-milk-rich curries you find in South India. Also, they use roasted spice powder instead of raw ones.  From the first bite, my taste buds knew it, and the no-frills service at restaurants made me feel comfortable and concentrate only on the steaming hot food.  So, do you want to try these authentic Jaffna dishes and experience how this Northern Sri Lankan city preserves an authentic Tamil culture? The acidic and mildly sweet taste of these dishes goes well with spicy black chickpea curries, Pol Sambol, and Onion Sambol.  You can also definitely have Pol Roti or coconut Roti and Dosas for breakfast. Here are the places that you can visit for breakfast in Jaffna. 1. It tastes great with Pol Sambol and Sothi or coconut milk gravy. This eatery has marble tables and old photos on display. So, it almost feels like time travel. It remains open from 7:30 AM to 9 PM, and on Saturdays, it opens at 8:30 AM.  They served me food on banana leaves and in steel utensils. Also, remember that they only accept cash. You must make a visit to the Malayan Cafe a part of your Jaffna travel itinerary.  2. The Red Rice Puttu Experience I tried the red rice puttu at a small local eatery. These eateries are called Saapadu Kades in the local language. I was blown away by the earthy and subtly sweet taste of the puttu.  The spicy chickpea curry perfectly complemented it. I also tried some Babat (Tripe) curry and fish kool.  The Lunch Stops And Specials  The food of Jaffna and Northern Sri Lanka has become so popular that Peter Kuruvita now conducts a food tour of the region. A tour of the Jaffna Market and attending the local cultural dance here is a prominent part of his food tour itinerary.  However, this tour offered by the Australian Chef is expensive, and you will have to spend between AUD 1885 and 6720 to be a part of the tour.  As a budget traveler, you can see much more and experience the food scene here better by walking around the city and talking to the locals.  There is so much authenticity in these DIY tours. Also, one great thing about the lunch staples in Jaffna is the variety. While the crab curry gets all the glory, there is something very comforting about the Sattvik food served here, including rice, different types of curries, and dal.  Let’s find out what to eat and where to eat.  1. Jaffna Crab Curry Jaffna crab curry is just the way I want to have the crab. It needs to be spicy and hot without adulterating the authentic taste of a crab. I had the crab curry at Cosy Hotel & Restaurant on Stanley Road.  However, let me tell you that Cosy Hotel is expensive, and I did not mind because we were a group of 5, travelers bonded over food, and our local guide. If you are traveling solo, the pocket-pinch will be around USD 20.  You can even try the crab curry at the small eateries in the streets of Jaffna. They don’t “look” impressive, and you may raise eyebrows about the hygiene. Still, they serve piping hot food, and the locals have it. So, they are safe. 2. Vegetarian Thali On A Banana Leaf At Nallur Bhavan During my temple visit in Jaffna, I found the Nallur Bhavan very close to the Nallur Kovil. They serve Sattvik food on banana leaves and in steel plates.  Most people were having Dosa here. However, I had some Chilli Kothu Parotta, and it was yum.  For a more comforting and filling experience, you can try rice with rasam and different types of sabzi here. Apart from the Indiana national parks, the state is also famous by the name of “great lakes state” since it shares 40 miles of shoreline with Lake Michigan.  The four national parks in Indiana are renowned as outdoor adventure destinations, namely the Indiana Dunes National Park, President Lincoln’s Boyhood Cabin, George Roger Clark, and the Lewis and Clark Historic Trail. Of the four national parks, Indiana Dunes National Park is a must-see destination. Indiana Dunes National Park and George Rogers Clark National Historical Park are national parks in the term's true meaning. And, the other two national parks in Indiana, i.e., Lincoln’s Boyhood National Memorial and Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail, are the two memorial sites in Indiana, recognized for their routes of historical significance or original trails by the National Historic Trails. The standard working hours of the general areas of the national park are Monday to Sunday from 06:00 am to 11:00 pm. The entrance to the Indiana Dunes National Park is through the west beach. The hours of operation of this portion of the park is Monday to Saturday from 07:00 am to 09:00 pm. Weather News: Usually, July is the warmest month in the national park, and January is the coldest month. June month witnesses the heaviest rainfall with 4.66 inches of rain on average. Entrance Fees To The Park:  West Beach - Standard Entrance Fee $6.00, Senior Pass Entrance Fee $3.00, Access Pass Entrance Fee $3.00, Bus Entrance Fee $30.00. Dunewood Campground - Standard Camping Fee $25.00, Senior Pass Camping Fee $12.50, Access Pass Camping Fee $12.50. This campground is 1.5 miles from the beach and boasts 67 campsites made for both RVs and tent camping.  One-half of the site is open for reserve, and the other half is given on a first-come-first-served basis. You will find showers and restrooms at the campground but no water or electric hookups.  Indiana Dunes Visitors Centers:  Dorothy Buell Visitor Center - This Indiana national park visitor center is open on all days except New Year’s Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day. The operation hours are 09:00 am to 04:00 pm Central Time (Due to covid-19). At Dorothy Buell, you will view lobby displays, read brochures about Porter County, Dunes State Park, Indiana, and Indiana Dunes National Park. You can also shop in the Eastern National Bookstore and enjoy watching educational displays and two short orientation videos. Paul H. Douglas Center For Environmental Education - This visitor center is open from 09:00 am to 05:00 pm Central Time during Summers and from 09:00 am to 04:00 pm during Winters. This center is your gateway to the magnificent Paul H. Douglas Trail via Miller Woods. You will find a natural environment all through the center through its hands-on educational exhibits, animals, lectures, Nature Play Zone, ranger-guided hikes, and crafts. Popular Activities To Do At The National Park: Hiking. Picnic at the beach. Birding. Swimming. Fishing and Paddling. Geocaching. Horse Riding on the equestrian trails. Camping (Between April 1st to October 31st). Biking. Snowshoeing and cross country skiing. Shuttle Bus Services: During the summer period, on weekends, you can take the services of free shuttle buses from the Dunewood Campground to the beaches. You can stop at sites like the Miller Train Station, Marquette Park, Lake Street Beach, and The Douglas Center.  Pet Friendliness: Indiana Dunes National Park is completely dog-friendly. You can take your pet to almost all trails and other parts of the park, besides a few exceptions. For example, you cannot take your pets on Glenwood Dunes Trail’s equestrian part, in the lifeguard area of the West Beach, and the Pinhook Bog Trail. You can enjoy a free public wi-fi facility at the Indiana Dunes Visitor Center. 2. George Rogers Clark National Historical Park:  Located on Southwest Indiana and beside the Wabash River, George Rogers Clark National Historical Park is one of the small Indiana national parks, which has a few monuments, a picnic spot, statutes, and a visitor center as its main center of attraction. The national park is about an hour tour in total.   Why Was George Rogers Clark National Historical Park Built? George Rogers Clark National Park was built in the 1920s in memory of an American Colonel named George Rogers Clark, who captured Fort Sackville in 1779 and his army with help from French residents of the Illinois country. The capture of the fort guaranteed the United States a claim to the frontier, which is approximately an area as big as the original 13 states. The National Park is a memorial built to commemorate Clark’s success for his unmatchable success for the revolutionary war’s 150th anniversary. When you visit this national park’s visitor center, you will discover the fort’s history, how it was built, and how it felt living in the Pullman District. In addition, at the national park, you will be shown a 30-minute short film on the life of George Rogers Clark. Things To Do At The George Rogers Clark National Park A short walk around the nearby town of Vincennes will offer you the following things to do at this small Indiana national park: Dine at restaurants. Camping at Campgrounds. The Old Cathedral. State Historic Sites. Shops to shop. Antique Stores. There are particularly no campgrounds at George Rogers Clark National Park. But, visitors can find campgrounds for RV and tent camping at the Ouabache Trails Park, located in Vincennes.  Space For Pets: Your leashed pets can accompany you on the walkways around the Memorial and the visitor center, but their entry inside any buildings is strictly prohibited. Timings for the Park District: George Rogers Clark Memorial is from 09:00 am to 04:45 pm on demand. Weather At The Park: The weather inside the national park is very much typical for the Midwest. Summer months can be hot and humid, and winters quite cool. Entrance Fees To The Park: For a George Rogers Clark National Park tour, there is no entrance fee charged.  The Visitors Centers To Visit: This Indiana national park has one visitor center with the same name as the national park. This center has a small exhibit area. You will be shown a short 30-minute introductory movie titled “Long Knives,” which tells about the backstory of George Rogers Clark and his military campaign. No drinks or food are allowed at the visitor center or Memorial. Services offered here are charging stations, restrooms, bookstores, and drinking fountains. 3. Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial:  In the southern part of Indiana and Lincoln City, you will find the third Indiana national park, named Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial. This is where former President Abraham Lincoln grew from youth to manhood before becoming the 16th President of the United States of America. Operating Hours Of The Lincoln Boyhood National Park: All visitors are allowed to tour the national park grounds and visit all the outside areas daily, between sunrise and sunset. Once you arrive at the park, there are plenty of things that you can do, such as two miles of trails, watching the sculptured panels on the outside of the Lincoln Memorial Visitor Center, visiting the Cabin-Site Memorial, the Pioneer Cemetery, and the Living Historical Farm. Unfortunately, the park is closed on almost all federal holidays. Weather At The Park: The climate in Southern Indiana is moderate, with a touch of warmness and moistness. The summers are warmer and winters cooler. It rains the most during Spring. Visitor Center At The Park: The Lincoln Boyhood park has a Memorial Visitor Center built in 1943 with two memorial halls and a connecting cloister. In the Memorial Court, you will find the works of E.H. Daniels and five sculptured panels that mark significant periods in Abraham Lincoln’s life. Taking a tour of the whole Memorial will take up to 30 to 60 minutes. There is also an orientation film shown at the visitor center every half an hour from 08:00 am to half an hour before the day’s closing. The Museum artifacts and exhibits speak about Abraham Lincoln’s life.  This national park is all about Lincoln’s family, boyhood, and frontier life in this Indiana national park area. During my last trip to Jaffna, I got an idea about the inclusive soul of Sri Lanka. The Ambuluwawa Tower is another prominent example of how the country practices a peaceful, multi-religious coexistence.  Along with the top Hindu temples in Jaffna and the Ritigala Forest Monastery, this 48-meter-tall tower has been a highlight of the religious scene in Sri Lanka for me.  This tower has Hindu, Christian, Buddhist, and Muslim sites. Also, it rises above the mountain and is truly called “Nature’s Stairway to Sri Lanka” for the views of the Knuckles Range and other surrounding mountain ranges.  Hi, in today’s blog, I will talk about the Ambuluwawa Tower in Sri Lanka. The cost will be around INR 3500.  However, the travel time can be more than an hour depending on the traffic conditions.  2. By Train However, I took a train from Kandy to Gampola. It is lighter on the pocket, and the commute time is a little less.  Moreover, it is perfect for someone like me who believes in the philosophy of TheLow DownUnder Travel.  Trains depart from Kandy to Ambuluwawa three times a day.  The first train departs at 3:35 AM and reaches Ambuluwawa at 4:18 AM. Furthermore, the next train departs at 8:47 AM and reaches Ambuluwawa at 9:32 AM.  However, the fastest train from Kandy to Ambuluwawa departs at 11:10 AM and reaches at 11:36 AM. Also, the average ticket price for this train journey is around INR 380.  Moreover, tuk-tuks are easily available from the Gampola Station to the Ambuluwawa Tower. You have to negotiate a bit, and for me, it cost around INR 400. From the station, you will reach the tower entrance in 15-20 minutes.  3. Reserve A Tuk-Tuk  Tuk-Tuks are the best for exploring Sri Lanka. A ride in Tuk-Tuks is fun and adventurous. Also, today, there are platforms such as tuktukrental. com to make your rides easier.  A reserved tuk-tuk ride from Kandy to Ambuluwawa will cost around INR 1500.  If you have reserved a tuk-tuk, the entry fee to the park for one adult will cost 2900 LKR, which is around INR 850.  Furthermore, you can get dropped off at the entrance and then book a taxi-tuktuk or walk the rest of the distance.  Reserved Tuk-Tuk, Taxi Tuk-Tuk, And Walk: Which Option Is The Best For You?  I got down at the entrance of the Ambuluwawa Park and then took a taxi tuk-tuk. It cost me around INR 400, and these are the best options because they are souped up and they can climb up the mountain faster.  I found these taxi tuk-tuks at the entrance, and the drivers were friendly. The price was around 400 INR or 1500 LKR.  You can even take your own tuk-tuk. However, I saw many tuk-tuks getting stuck in the middle. Then, the passengers had to walk for the rest of the route.  Now, walking here or on the ascent is not everyone’s cup of tea. It is very steep.  Visiting The Ambuluwawa Tower? Keep These Tips In Mind  Early morning or late afternoon (just before sunset) is the best time of day to climb up the Ambuluwawa Tower. Moreover, in the middle of the day, the view can become foggy.  So, here are a few more things to remember.  1. Enjoy The Unique Ascent Experience At The Ambuluwawa Tower You have to climb up 55 stairs to reach the top of the tower.  However, the staircase is narrow and spiral, and as I kept climbing up, the staircase started getting narrower.  Still, enjoy the 360-degree view before your eyes as you keep climbing up the stairs.  2. Combine Your Tower Visit With Other Activities Once you are done visiting the tower, you can visit the nearby Java Lounge or souvenir shop. You can also have an adrenaline rush at the Adventure Park.   Furthermore, you can combine a historical and cultural tour of Kandy with a visit to the Ambuluwawa Tower. You can even travel to Nuwara Eliya.  Moreover, there are many nearby tea plantations to explore.   3. Insider Tips  Layered clothing and comfortable shoes are a must as you need to climb up 55 stairs. Also, at the top, it is very windy.  Moreover, you have to hold your mobile phone or camera firmly as the wind is harsh at the top.  Also, you need to carry enough water and snacks. Is It Safe To Visit The Ambuluwawa Tower?  Yes, the Ambuluwawa Tower is safe to climb. However, the staircases are narrow and can sometimes be slippery.  Also, sometimes the crowd can move in the wrong direction, creating unnecessary traffic in the staircase.  Furthermore, it may be difficult for you if you have health issues such as vertigo and spondylitis.  Nevertheless, wear comfortable and sporty shoes and stay hydrated to eliminate most hazards while climbing up the stairs.  Where To Stay Near The Ambuluwawa Tower?  You can stay in Kandy or Gampola for a comfortable visit to the Ambuluwawa Tower. However, Kandy is a better option to find an accommodation if you want to combine the tower visit with other day trips.  Nevertheless, there are some of the best places to stay in Kandy.  1.
