About Lutsen:

In 1885, a young Swedish immigrant, Charles Axel Nelson, purchased 160 acres of land on Lake Superior for $12. He established his homestead there overlooking the lake and soon a settlement rose up in the area. The small settlement turned into a township that he named Lutsen, after the Battle of Lutzen. With a small population of 190 people, Lutsen is an unincorporated area within the Superior National Forest.
