Another thing to keep in mind, if you are walking alone, try to be on proper-lit roads, especially at night.   It is important to be aware of your surroundings at all times, even when in a crowd. I recently traveled to a crowded city in India, and I realized, that pickpockets and petty theft are most rampant in crowds.
