I know what’s going on inside that pretty head of yours. You are probably thinking how many hookups I've had during my travels - especially since I am here to talk about travel hookups!  TBH, a few times for sure - not too many times, but definitely a few times. I mean, I had no idea about how the hookup culture worked during vacations - until I tried it out a few times. And now? Well, while the adrenaline is certainly thrilling, it does come with some major risks.  And while I’m nobody to stop you, it’s important that I help you out with my comprehensive list of dangers associated with travel hookups. Once you are aware, you will be safe while having ‘fun’ on vacation. Stay tuned. What Are The Dangers Of Hooking Up When You Travel? Romantic relationships on the road can be a great way to experience a foreign culture intimately, but at the same time, navigating the dating scene abroad can be a minefield.  Hooking up while traveling is an experience many actively strive for; as of 2025, 58 percent of travelers have embarked on a vacation romance, according to a recent TripAdvisor survey. Hookup culture not only accepts but actively encourages casual sex, including activities like one-night stands, without necessarily including bonding or emotional intimacy.  The term “hookup” has a broad scope because it can indicate any form of sexual activity between partners, including kissing. One can expect the dangers of hookup culture to be amplified when the partners in question have gone all the way at least once, especially regarding the following point.  In this context, let’s look at the primary dangers of travel hookups: Misaligned expectations  The risks of overindulging in alcohol The dangers of hooking up are relative  About good old-fashioned regret  The big issue of safety. 1. Misaligned Expectations: The question of whether it’s acceptable or even desirable to hook up with someone while traveling is very complicated. It first depends on the object of the hookup: a local or a fellow traveler? It seems far less complex when the person is also traveling and in a similar situation to you.  Given the significant financial gap and ensuing power imbalance between tourists and locals in destinations like third-world countries, there’s no shortage of potential problems. The traveler might see it as a fling, and the local – as real love, finally. Streams of messages over different online apps will follow the interaction, which can get awkward and, ultimately, one person could decide to block the other and move on.  2. The Risks Of Overindulging In Alcohol: It’s a fine line between lowering inhibitions and becoming too intoxicated to make smart decisions about what you do or don’t want to engage in. Overindulging in alcohol makes you more vulnerable to assault and theft, not to mention risking alcohol poisoning and ruining your entire vacation. 3. Relative Dangers Of Hooking Up: That only begins to scratch the surface of the dangers faced by women. Trust your intuition if a situation feels wrong or unsafe. Don’t assume you’re safer leaving a bar in a foreign country with someone you just met than you would be back home.  The sometimes misleading sense of security you feel while on vacation can make you vulnerable. Other vacationers won’t necessarily have your best interests at heart. Safe sex is about more than wearing a condom; it’s about not ending up on the news as a cautionary tale.  4. About Good Old-Fashioned Regret:  An online survey of 1,468 college students found that more than 27% felt embarrassed about a recent hookup, just under a quarter reported emotional difficulties, a fifth felt a loss of respect, and a tenth shared they had problems with their long-term partner.  78% of women and 72% of men who had casual sex reported experiencing regret thereafter, according to a Canadian survey of 200 undergraduate students.  5. The BIG Issue Of Safety: Obviously, this is perhaps the most important issue associated with travel hookups. When you reside somewhere unfamiliar, you become more open and vulnerable to any kind of sexual assault.  Both drug use and alcohol are common parts of travel, and both can sufficiently increase risks when you are traveling. Why? Well, it can impair your judgement, increasing risks in the process. As per travel data on Satista, sexual violence in international trips is typically perpetrated by strangers or even recent acquaintances.  Of course, this is correct, considering you won’t have your usual security network of family and friends who can interfere or even help in case of something dangerous. Moreover, in a foreign land, you might not be familiar with social cues or even local emergency support.  How To Minimize Risks Associated With Travel Hookups? Now that I’ve highlighted the major risks associated with travel hookups, I have a few tricks up my sleeve to minimize the dangers associated with travel hookups: Always meet in Public! If you are meeting someone from a dating or hookup app for the first time, and that too while you are traveling, then it's best to meet them in a public spot. And best to avoid drinking - what if they spike your drink? But if you still want to be a little tipsy, drink a little, depending on your tolerance, and then go meet someone new.  Always confide in someone about your plans. So what are they miles away from you? My best friend lives on another continent, but I always message her - she knows what to do if she doesn’t hear from me every few hours. Also, I always share my live location with her - just to be extra safe.  While you can do a thousand other things, it is best to trust your gut. If something feels off, then trust your instincts and leave. You don’t need to hook up with someone who doesn’t make you feel comfortable at the onset. And if you are meeting in public, then leaving is always an easy option. Lastly, never disclose personal information. This basically means don’t tell your tour ‘date’ which hotel you are residing in, what your plans are for the next few days, and stuff like that. This is because once you do leave, considering something feels off, they might just follow you and make it unsafe for you.  The Dos Of Hooking Up When Traveling: It’s not about avoiding hookups while traveling, but approaching them the right way. To make sure you don’t regret the experience, don’t lower your standards. Always be selective and don’t hook up with people in your tour group or who are staying at your hotel – it will prevent the awkwardness of running into them after a disappointing experience.  Follow the golden rule: come and leave with friends and look out for each other and, ideally, other travelers. Being an active bystander will make sure no one looks back on situations abroad with regret.

Bangkok: Offering The Perfect Blend Of Heritage And Modern Life Bangkok is about a mash-up of crazy traffic, golden temples, shopping malls, and little alleyways where people are grilling skewers right on the sidewalk.  The Grand Palace is probably the first stop for most people, and it’s where the Emerald Buddha is. And honestly, it’s more impressive in person than in any photo. Just a short walk away, Wat Pho features a reclining Buddha that occupies an entire hall. If you’re more into daily life, the markets are wild. Chatuchak Weekend Market is like a maze. You’ll think you’re going in circles, but then suddenly you’re eating something you can’t even pronounce.  At night, don’t bother going to bed early. Rooftop bars offer skyline views that remind you why the city never stops. 2. Phuket: The Largest Island In Thailand  Phuket’s the big island, the one everybody’s heard of. But if not, Kata and Karon beaches are way calmer. Food-wise? Fresh seafood everywhere, plus night markets that are fun just to wander through. Chiang Mai Royal Park Rajapruek is a botanical garden with international acclaim. Local and foreign tourists gather here to explore the 198 acres of area with rare plants and winter flowers of more than 1000 species.  The gardens here have plants from various countries such as Japan, India, Bhutan, and China. Furthermore, the Ho Kham Luang Royal Pavilion, or a Lanna-style structure, is the main attraction of this botanical park, and it stands for the rich heritage of Thai architecture and the morale of King Rama IX.  Moreover, this botanical park is a Net-Zero Carbon Park, and it aims to reduce carbon emissions and promote low-carbon tourism.  Queen Sirikit Botanic Garden The Mae Rim district of Chiang Mai is home to the Queen Sirikit Botanic Garden. Spanning over an area of 2,574 acres, it has more than 10 glasshouse zones.  Furthermore, it has a canopy walkway with an elevation of 400 meters. From there, you can enjoy a 360-degree view of the natural forests and trails around.  4. Ayutthaya: A UNESCO World Heritage Site An hour or so from Bangkok and you’re basically stepping into another century. Ayutthaya used to be Siam’s capital, and now its ruins and temples are everywhere. The kind of ruins that make you stop and go, “Wow, people actually built this hundreds of years ago.” Easiest way to see it? Rent a bike. Just ride around the historical park, stop whenever something catches your eye.  Don’t miss Wat Mahathat. It has the Buddha head wrapped in tree roots, which is the photo everybody takes, but it really is cool in person.  Wat Phra Si Sanphet shows off how grand the city must’ve been back in the day. 5. Krabi Province: Home To Over 100 Islands And The Thai Adventure Hub Cliffs, turquoise water, beaches! Everything is so perfect in Karabi.  Railay Beach is the spot most people talk about. You can only get there by boat, and it’s a mix of rock climbers scaling cliffs and people just lying in the sand doing nothing. Island-hopping is easy here. The Hong Islands are perfect if you want snorkeling or kayaking in quiet lagoons. Ao Nang’s where most travelers stay. It has enough hotels, restaurants, and bars to keep you busy without being overwhelming. Phuket Vs Krabi Beaches: Which One Is Better To Visit?  It’s a tough task! Can you pick a favorite? All the beaches of Phuket and Krabi are beautiful. However, Phuket is more accessible than Krabi. So, for a family holiday, these beaches will be ideal.  On the other hand, if you are traveling with friends or with your partner and you want a more adventurous experience, Krabi beaches are the places to visit.  Similarly, the beaches of Phuket are more crowded than those of Krabi. Well, I have been to both places and I have to say the best of both places.   Yes, there are so many similar elements in the location but there are also diversities. I will share with you several categories and explain how they are in Bali and Thailand. You will get an idea of where you want to go when you go through these factors.   Basics of Bali   Apart from the beautiful beaches, the basics of Bali also include hidden waterfalls, picturesque rice paddies, and iconic temples. The tourism industry is thriving not just because of the natural landscapes. It is one of the most exotic places to travel, especially with its beautiful landscapes and culture!   However, also because of its water sports like surfing, hikes to volcanoes like Mount Batur, and delicious food. Yes, you also need to be a little cautious when visiting Bali because there is unpredictable weather, drinking tap water is not safe and beware of scammers.   Theories of Thailand   Thailand is famous for its temples and monasteries, especially when Buddhism is an integral part of their culture. Additionally, how can we forget the beautiful sandy beaches of Thailand creating the perfect picturesque view for you?   Furthermore, the locals there are popular for their hospitality and friendliness. Let's discuss how the shopping scene is there plus, the way the food and culture of the two places differ. Then you can decide where you plan to go, Bali vs Thailand!   A Detailed Comparison between Bali and Thailand   Bali is a part of Indonesia while Thailand is a whole country, so statistically, it is much bigger. Islands that you must visit if you plan to travel to Thailand are Koh Phangon and Koh Samui for natural beauty. While, if it is all about shopping and a big city feel, go to Bangkok.   Let’s not forget Phuket and Pattaya if you are a beach lover. After all, the rice terraces in the north of the country are a perfect place if you are into photoshoots and perfect DPs for your social media profiles. Coming to Bali, it is a smaller place and easier to travel.   Be it Ubud or Kuta, the beaches are beautiful and relaxing. Let us not forget the beautiful crochet dresses you get in the local market which you can then don and visit the rice paddy fields. Beautiful volcanoes on the island have created beautiful forests and waterfalls around them.   Visa   Visiting Bali will need you to purchase your visa online or after you arrive at their airport for 500,000 IDR/AUD 50/USD 35. Additionally, if you are visiting Bali, you will need to pay a tourist tax of USD 10/AUD 15/ 150,000 IDR per person.   Paying online will help you book your visa beforehand, however; you have to use a different portal to book it. Furthermore, you can also book your visa at the airport, however, I would suggest otherwise. Going to Thailand, and getting a visa is much easier as compared to Bali.   It is also one of the places to travel without a passport! You have to pay 10,000 Thai baht for a single entry which can be extended later because they provide a Visa waiver that lasts for 30 days. However, the visa-on-arrival scheme is not quite well established.   I did it and there is a huge line with so much chaos in the airport. If you have a connecting flight from there, you are doomed especially because there is a lot of partiality going on. If you are applying for a group visa, the process is much faster as compared to an individual visa so, I will suggest applying for an online visa before traveling!   Accommodation   If you want luxury, when you are booking accommodation, Bali is a better fit than Thailand, in my opinion. There are a variety of guest houses, Airbnb, hotel resorts, hostels, and homestays available in Bali with all the comforts and warm hospitality of the local people.   You will get accommodations under a diverse range, from budget-friendly to luxurious. Thailand also has a diverse range of accommodations, especially in the big cities. The concerns arises if you like spacious living quarters because Bali will give you that while Thailand, mostly is a little cramped.   Transportation   When you plan for Bali, try to select locations that are closer to each other! For a single day, create an itinerary where you visit two to three places that fall in the same direction or district. The best option is renting a scooter because it is one of the best options to explore both popular and off-track locales.   You can also book your rides on transportation apps such as Grab and Gojek. Several places are quite traffic-prone in areas such as Canggu and Seminyak. Thailand is huge, so you select any two or three cities like Phuket, Pattaya, Bangkok, and others.   Apart from renting scooters, you can get public transport such as trains, planes, and buses in Thailand which is quite easy for you! You can select Thailand as one of the best places to travel with kids.   Beaches   Beautiful beaches in Bali offer you soft powdery sand with endless blue and green water, and waves crashing! You must visit the resort town of Nusa Dua, after all, it is one of the coolest places to check out the picturesque views.   Another beautiful view that you must not miss is the black sand beaches in Bali with its aesthetics. The Indian Ocean in all its beauty is brought to the forefront because some people are crazy about the water. Even though Thailand has more beaches than Bali, you won’t be able to cover all of them because it is a whole country! Try and visit the famous beach, Railay Beach. So, I feel Bali has more natural beach beauty as compared to Thailand.   Things to Do   If you compare geographically, Bali is a smaller island compared to Thailand, a big country. Of course, we go by numbers, Thailand might give you a larger number of things to do, however, it might become more hectic as compared to Bali. However, the locations and activities are quite far apart from each other.   Surfing, snorkeling, swimming, and parasailing are some of the water sports that you can do when visiting Bali. So, when it comes to experiencing things to the maximum, Bali is a better choice as compared to Thailand.   Starting from Uluwatu Temple, Bali Zoo, Mount Batur, Tanah Lot Temple, Goa Gajah and so much more, you will see the beauty of nature, culture, history, people, and others. Thailand offers you a beautiful view of the White House of Chiang Rai and the Grand Palace.     Safety   When it comes to safety, there are some issues in Thailand and Bali. Bali is normally quite safe and the crimes that are reported are mostly petty such as snatch and grab or pickpocketing. While Thailand’s road accidents are quite high.   From a crime perspective, Thailand is safe overall however, the nightlife districts in Pattaya, Phuket, and Bangkok attract a lot of scammers. Furthermore, there have been people who have fallen victim to occasional acts of crime and violence.   Nightlife   Thailand has better nightlife than Bali so if you are a party lover, you must either be in Bangkok, Phuket, or Pattaya in Thailand. Bali on the other hand has limited places to offer you party vibes such as Kuta Beach or Seminyak Beach!   The parties in Bali are more inclusive because of the close circle, locals mostly invite you if they connect well with you. While Thailand has a seedy side of the nightlife!   Culture   Bali is a Hindu-majority Island with a natural landscape but what is more attractive is their traditional culture. With a Hindu enclave in a Muslim country, the city has a well-defined culture with temples, rituals, festivals, offerings, arts and crafts.   Thailand on the other hand has a lot of Thai and Buddhist culture persisting creating a fascinating culture. There are several monasteries and places to worship which are quite welcoming for tourists.   Overall, both places have beautiful, warm, and welcoming cultures and you can easily vibe anywhere!   Food   With a prominent culture for food, both Balinese and Thai food are delicious. However, compared to Bali, the street food culture is quite rich with delicious and high-quality food served at a very cheap price. You will also get a range of local and international fare-based Thai restaurants.   Pad Thai, Som tam, Moo ping, Khao Soi, Khao man gai, and other items are deliciously available almost everywhere. If you are a fruit lover, you have to try their mango, papaya, and other fruits, desserts, and drinks on the street.   At Bali, there is a lot of cafe culture, and it is a bit expensive especially when it comes to offering a normal menu. Some common items that you should try in Bali are Nasi Goreng, Bali Guling, Sate, and Mie Goreng.   Shopping   Everyone loves shopping, so if this is a factor based on which you choose a location for your next vacation, then let me tell you it is quite different in Bali vs Thailand. You will find high-end products at the malls of Bangkok, and night markets at different beach towns in Thailand.   You should keep the money for shopping when visiting Thailand while in Bali, things are quite cheap. Several entrepreneurial shops and small stores are giving you a variety of local options, arts, crafts, clothing, and others.   So, Is Bali Better or Thailand?   Of course, in my opinion, I enjoyed more in Bali but that could have been because I was more experienced in traveling than when I visited Thailand. Simultaneously, the diversity I have seen in Bali is a bit more as compared to Thailand!   When you are doing Bali vs Thailand when planning your next vacation, jot down the points mentioned above.
