You’ve decided to book a vacation to one of the most stunning parts of the world – Cancun. No trip would be complete without sailing on the crystal-clear turquoise waters of the Riviera Maya, right?
Worried it’s too much money? It may not be as expensive as you think!
Here we’ll share our top tips for saving money when going on a yacht charter.
Book your trip in the off-season:
Any local will tell you there is no bad time to visit Cancun. With warm, sunny days for most of the year, there’s not much to dislike.
The off-season is November to April, the weather is cooler, and it is known as the rainy and hurricane season, but hurricanes aren’t a common occurrence and the likelihood of you experiencing one on your trip is slim. While it does rain, it doesn’t typically rain non-stop for days on end, so you’ll still be able to enjoy your trip.
Booking in the off-season is a sure-fire way to save money. Plus, if you can’t tolerate hot weather, this is a great time to come as the temperatures can soar the rest of the year. If you’re from a cooler climate, you may find it overbearing.
Book with others:
The simplest way to get all the opulence for a fraction of the cost is by booking with other people. The more people that join you, the cheaper it’ll be.
If you aren’t traveling with anyone you know, ask the charter company if they offer group bookings. You may be able to book with another group or other couples to save money. If you are traveling on your own, putting yourself out there and booking a trip with others is a great way to meet new people.
Choose a more affordable yacht:
Reputable yacht charter companies have expansive fleets with many different styles of yachts, sizes, and price points. Top of the line, big models are going to be dearer than smaller older types. You can still have an amazing day on a beautiful boat without breaking the bank.
To cut costs, opt for a smaller yacht or if you’re traveling with a group and need the space, choose an older model rather than the latest.
Ask what the price covers:
Make sure your payment covers all expenses related to your trip. The last thing you want is to be out of pocket for extras you had no idea about. Ensure you ask the charter company if the following are included before booking with them:
- Food and drink
- Inclusions for the day
- Cleaning charges;
Book when there are sales or discounts:
It’s a good idea to follow the charter company you want to travel with on their social media pages in the lead-up to your trip. If they have sales or discounts going, this is the first place they’ll usually advertise them. If they have an online newsletter, this is another way to be the first to know about sales or you can ask if they price match to save some extra cash.
BYO food and drinks:
Depending on how long your charter is, you may or not need food and refreshments.
You should pack a large drink bottle filled with water, it may get hot onboard and if you’re swimming or doing other activities, you’ll need it. Some trips have all-inclusive food and drinks included in the price.
If you are looking to cut costs, it’s best to look for a trip that includes this, so you don’t have to buy them on board or once you dock. If the company doesn’t offer food and drinks as part of the price, ask them if you can bring your own. This could save you a lot of money, especially if you wanted an alcoholic beverage or two while sailing.
Book a shorter trip:
Yacht charters can go for as little as a few hours right up to overnight stays. Shorter trips are usually cheaper, so it’s best to choose this option if saving money is a priority.
Going out for 2-3 hours will still allow you to see beautiful parts of Cancun that you may not have been able to see from land.
Say no to optional add-ons:
Charter companies don’t just have the option of sailing on the tranquil waters, they have many additional add ons you can choose from. Some popular ones include jet-skiing, snorkeling, and live music. Most are for an extra cost, of course. To prevent blowing your budget, it’s best to choose only one or two. If your money’s too tight, you may have to pass on them altogether.
If you’ve always dreamt of boating on a lavish yacht on the Riviera Maya and don’t want to forgo all the luxuries that come with it, look at other ways you can budget your trip if you have a spending limit. Can you stay somewhere more affordable or find cheaper restaurants to eat at?
It’s all doable, you’ll just need to work out your priorities and what’s important to you on your trip and what’s not.
