Traveling solo on a motorcycle! A long-cherished dream! You know, I had a senior in my school. I was not in touch with her after we both left school.  Now, thanks to Instagram, I found her again, and guess what she was doing those days? Conquering the lakes and mountains on her motorcycle.  I again started nurturing my dream of solo motorcycle trips. The open road and independence became the ultimate goal to achieve when the bottlenecks at work and family responsibilities became claustrophobic.  Since then, I have completed many solo trips on motorcycles, and each ride has gifted me a different empowering experience.  However, to be a strong and independent solo woman traveler, you have to get your motorcycle touring packing list correct.  Hi, in today’s blog, I will talk about the things to pack for a solo motorcycle ride for a woman traveler. So, keep reading.  The Ultimate Motorcycle Touring Packing List For Women Solo Travelers  As I was saying, a lot of preparation becomes essential when you are a woman solo traveler on a motorcycle.  Having the right essentials in your bag is not just about comfort. It is also about your safety and how you prepare for every trip.  Furthermore, when you know that you have the right gear and you have made your preparations well, you feel more confident about the ride, irrespective of the distance to be covered.  In addition, there can be sudden medical emergencies. You may fall sick, get minor cuts, or your menstrual cycle can arrive earlier than expected.  So, you have to be really prepared as a woman solo rider.  If you are planning a motorcycle ride for the first time, it can be difficult for you to think about everything you need.  However, after completing many miles as a solo motorcycle traveler, having met a major motorcycle crash, and learning a few lessons the hard way, I now have a fair idea about what to pack.  The focus is always on safety, self-reliance, and peace of mind.  1. Protective Gear You’ll Wear All Day Safety is the most important thing in your motorcycle touring packing list. However, you have to consider the comfort factor, too.  Think that you will have to wear your gear for many hours when you are on a long-distance ride.  So, you will find a gear that fits your body well.  If your gear is ill-fitted, you will find it uncomfortable. The discomfort can further cause distraction when you are on the road, and ensure reduced protection if you meet with a motorcycle accident, unfortunately.  So, make sure that you have these essentials in your bag.  DOT-approved helmet that fits properly (no pressure points) Also, an armored riding jacket and pants, preferably with ventilation for changing weather Furthermore, riding gloves (bring a lighter backup pair, too) And, over-the-ankle boots with slip-resistant soles. 2. Visibility And Weather Protection Essentials Compromised visibility and sudden changes in the weather conditions can cause major road accidents.  So, include these in your packing list.  High-visibility vest or reflective strips Also, rain gear (even if the forecast looks clear) Then, a neck gaiter or balaclava for wind, sun, or cold Moreover, a clear visor or anti-fog insert. 3. Motorcycle Safety And Emergency Gear This is where smart packing really pays off.  Even if you don’t plan to do major repairs, having basic tools on your bike gives you options and confidence if you’re far from help.  These items can turn a stressful situation into a manageable one. Basic motorcycle tool kit Also, a tire repair kit and a portable air compressor. Moreover, a chain lube or maintenance spray Also, a flashlight or headlamp And, an emergency roadside kit (flares or LED beacons). 4. Personal Safety Items For Solo Women Riders Solo travel as a woman doesn’t mean being fearful, but being prepared is empowering. Every woman knows that feeling in their gut when something feels off.  Trust your instincts. If something doesn’t feel right, it probably isn’t.  While we wish for the best, we prepare for the worst by packing these items just in case. Personal safety alarm (small, loud, effective) Phone charger and portable power bank Emergency contact list (written, not just in your phone) GPS or offline maps. 5. Health, Comfort, And Self-Care Must-Haves Long days on the bike can take a toll. Staying hydrated, fueled, and comfortable helps prevent fatigue, which is one of the biggest safety risks on long rides. A few comfort items go a long way. First aid kit (include blister care, pain reliever, allergy meds) Sunscreen and lip balm Reusable water bottle or hydration pack Healthy snacks (protein bars, nuts, dried fruit) Earplugs for long highway stretches. 6. Clothing That Works On And Off The Bike If you are going on a motorcycle trip, you have to think about what to pack and how it’s going to fit on the bike with you.  Packing light doesn’t mean packing poorly, but it is the name of the game on a bike trip.  Compression packing cubes are a game-changer for motorcycle travel.  Choose neutral pieces you can mix and match; think capsule wardrobe, and don’t forget to include these: Quick-dry base layers One warm layer (if going somewhere cold) Casual clothes that layer well Sleepwear and lightweight shoes. 7. Documents And Travel Organization Being organized saves time, stress, and frustration. Keep important documents waterproof and easily accessible. Driver’s license and motorcycle endorsement. Moreover, insurance and registration. Also, a health insurance card. Then, the emergency roadside assistance info. And a small notebook and pen. 8. Smart Tech For Long-Distance Motorcycle Touring Technology can be a powerful safety tool when used intentionally.  So, let someone know your route and check in regularly. Also, it’s a simple habit that adds an extra layer of security. Helmet Bluetooth system (for navigation or emergency calls). Also, a dash cam or helmet cam, Moreover, weather apps with alerts. In addition, a location-sharing app (shared with a trusted person). What To Do If You’re In An Accident While Traveling No one plans for a motorcycle accident, but knowing what to do makes all the difference. When you’re traveling solo, it’s especially important to take care of yourself first and not feel rushed or pressured. Get to a safe location if possible. Furthermore, call emergency services. Then, take photos and notes. Also, have an exchange of information with the involved parties. Moreover, take medical help.  As a woman motorcycle traveler, you don’t have to be fearless. You have to just be prepared, pack smart, be confident, and manage the challenges with a calm and capable mindset.

I have just shared my story of climbing the Sigiriya Rock. It’s huge, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with the 660-foot stone remnants, is the perfect postcard of the cultural richness of Sri Lanka.  I visited the Hindu temples of Jaffna and experienced their grandeur. I have also experienced the somber vibe and wondered at the architectural marvel of the Ritigala Forest Monastery.  Now, if you think of the Pidurangala Rock, it is not the bucket-list material like the three places I have mentioned. I initially planned a hike of the Pidurangala Rock to have a different perspective of the Sigiriya Rock.  The view from the top is mesmerizing.  However, the Pidurangala Rock is not just the lesser-known neighbor of the Sigiriya Rock. It was an ancient Buddhist Monastery and is famous as the home to a 1500-year-old massive statue of Lord Buddha.  Also, watching the sunrise from the top of the Pidurangala Rock is an ethereal experience.  I hope you have guessed by now. In this blog, I will share my experience of climbing the Pidurangala Rock, watching the sunrise from there, its history, and other details.  The History Of The Pidurangala Rock The history of the Pidurangala Rock is over two millennia old. King Kashyapa made the Sigiriya Fort his seat of power and asked the monks to shift here. He made suitable arrangements to build amenities for the resident monks here.  In fact, the rock gets its name from "Pidu + Ran + Goda." It means the offered piles of gold. Thus, the name itself explains how King Kashyapa made donations for the development.  Furthermore, the Sigiri Pidurangala Raja Maha Viharaya temple is still inside the caves.  Also, the site has a 1500-year-old massive Buddha Statue in a reclining position. The treasure hunters ruined it partially in the 1960s. However, it has been restored.  Today, the Pidurangala Rock is a protected archaeological site containing ancient caves, a 5th-century stupa, and remains of a second stupa on the summit. How To Reach The Pidurangala Rock From Kandy? Hiking the Sigiriya Rock and Pidurangala Rock can be an extension of the mixed bag of things to do in Kandy.  The journey from Kandy to the Pidurangala Rock 1. The Long Haul From Kandy  You can catch a bus from the station behind the Kandy train station to Dambulla. This is a journey of 2 hours and 15 minutes.  Furthermore, the ticket will cost you around 1.14 USD or 200 LKR.  2. The Short Haul From Kandy  Once you reach Dambulla, you will get local buses to Sigiriya. The ticket price is around 40 LKR, and the travel time is just 30 minutes.  What Is The Entry Fee For Pidurangala Rock? While researching Sigiriya Rock, I was shocked to find that the entrance fee is $36 USD per person. a steep price tag considering how affordable the rest of Sri Lanka is.  Aside from our $35 USD Yala National Park safari, it was the only major expense I encountered during my entire month-long trip. In fact, my 5 days in Jaffna were quite a budget-friendly affair.  However, the Pidurangala Rock was a stark contrast. However, my heart was really pumping.  I climbed up a steep set of stairs, and that was an excellent morning workout for me.  Then, the trail ran into a scramble, and here, I found some large boulders.  You don’t need to use your rock climbing skills here. However, you will definitely need your friend’s hand to hoist yourself up.  Now, as I reached the top, I saw the long-awaited silhouette of the Sigiriya Rock. It looked magical against the backdrop of a golden morning sky.  The only complaint I had was the crowded main viewpoint. A local guide showed me a place that was around 20 feet down.  There was hardly a soul, and the view was unobstructed.  The Sunrise Mission On The Pidurangala Rock Hike the Pidurangala Rock before or during the sunrise to be a part of nature’s magic. See how colors form before your eyes.  Do not walk or hike at the site once the Sun is down, as the elephants are out then. I took a tuk-tuk before sunset to reach the base.  It cost me around 500 LKR.  The trail begins at the ancient Buddhist temple. So, you have to be respectful in your attire and demeanor.  How To Have The "Perfect" Sigiriya Day? If you are an adventurous soul, you can actually climb both the rocks in one day. You can see the sunrise at Pidurangala and be back at Hotel Sigiriya to catch some quick refreshment and relax.  Then, in the late afternoon, you hike the Sigiriya Rock for the best sunset experience.  Where To Eat And Sleep In Sigiriya? Sigiriya is small and spread out, so stay near the "center" (look for Pradeep Restaurant on the map). I loved Kalana Homestay. A cheap, friendly, and right in the mix. If you want luxury, Heritance Kandalama is an architectural masterpiece built into the cliffs further out. Moreover, Pradeep Restaurant and Shenadi are the two places where you will find the best meals.  What To Bring For A Hike To The Pidurrangala Rock? Since the hike begins near a Buddhist temple, women are asked to cover their shoulders and legs out of respect.  Because of the heat, a sarong is the perfect solution. You can stay cool and easily tuck it away once you’ve passed the temple grounds. Forgot to pack something modest? Don't worry, as the ticket office usually has scarves available to borrow.  Just make sure you’ve also packed sturdy shoes, insect repellent, and plenty of water to stay comfortable on the trail!

The Sigiriya Rock was my next big cultural stop in Central Sri Lanka after the Ritigala Forest Monastery.  Also known as the “Lion Rock,” it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with whiffs of mythology and major archaeological importance.  Despite the absence of any archaeological evidence, there is a strong mythological belief that it is the place of Ravana’s Golden Palace.  However, scientific evidence says that the rock fortress with its massive columns was once the seat of power of King Kashyapa (477-495 AD).  He built the fortress with magnificent frescoes and the palace at the top of the rock column. Also, the palace got such a name because one had to access the fortress through the mouth of an enormously carved lion.  The area was earlier used as a Buddhist monastery from the third to the first century BCE.  So, along with the Hindu temples of Jaffna and the Ambuluwawa Tower, which has Hindu, Buddhist, Christian, and Muslim sites, the Sigiriya Rock also remains a major attraction for religious and spiritual seekers.  Hi, in today’s blog, I will talk about the location of the Sigiriya Rock, how to reach it, the climbing experience, history, the entry fee, the structure, and other details.  What Is The History Of The Sigiriya Rock?  Sigiriya Rock was a Buddhist Monastery. It rose in prominence after King Kashyapa took the throne and shifted the monks to Pidurangala, a nearby outcrop.  He found the top of this near-vertical rock formation more defensible and built a fortress on its top. It had a magnificent moat, water gardens, temples, and meeting halls.  However, deserted by his own force, King Kashyapa killed himself as he did not want to be a captive of his brother.  The Sigiriya Rock again became a monastery after Anuradhapura became the capital again.  However, after a few years, the place was abandoned until George Turnour translated the Buddhist texts and identified the Sigiriya Rock. Further, in 1831, Jonathan Forbes located the city. Then, after 20 years, Harry Bell, the Archaeological Commissioner of Ceylon, at that time discovered the Lion’s Paws.  Finally, the Sigiriya Rock became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982.  Where Is The Sigiriya Rock? How To Reach The Sigiriya Rock?  The Sigiriya Rock is located in the central region of Sri Lanka. Dambulla is the closest town, and it is the gateway to the Sigiriya Rock by road from Colombo and Kandy, the capital of the central province.  The distance is around 17 km, and the travel time is close to 25 minutes.  The distance between Kandy and the Sigiriya Rock is around 89 km, and the travel time by road is close to 2 hours and 31 minutes.  Furthermore, the distance from Colombo to the Sigiriya Rock is 177 km. So, the travel time is around 3 hours and 50 minutes.  Nevertheless, I took a bus from Dambulla to the Sigiriya Rock. The bus ticket price was around 50 LKR.  You will also get taxis and tuk-tuks from Dambulla.  Moreover, Habarana railway station, at a distance of around 20-30 minutes, is the closest to the Sigiriya Rock. Once you are done exploring Colombo or the things to do in Trincomalee, you can easily take a train ride to the Habarana railway station and take a taxi or tuk-tuk from there to the Sigiriya Rock.  What Are The Opening Hours And Entry Fee To The Lion Rock And Museum?  Sigiriya remains open from 7 AM to 6 PM. However, 5:30 PM is the latest time you can enter.  The entry fee to the Sigiriya Rock is around 11,149 LKR or 36 USD. This charge includes the museum entry fee.  However, you can also visit the museum on a different day and pay a fee of $5 or 1600 LKD.  Climbing The Sigiriya Rock  I started from the ancient water garden with the caves on the left. Furthermore, the octagonal man-made lake was in the shadow of the massive monolith.  As I proceeded, I found two big boulders forming a natural arch and creating a circular road upward. The path took a turn to the left.  The entire path was a part of the natural rock garden and was a sheer contrast against the water gardens below.  I met some spiders, monkeys, and street dogs on the way until I reached the Lion’s paws. 1. The Lion’s Paws The Lion’s Paws had a staircase in the center. This stone-made staircase is ancient, and the claws with the Lion’s paws are now the only remnants explaining why the Sigiriya Rock has the nickname of the Lion Rock.  The head and body of the lion are decayed and mostly engulfed by the jungle.  Furthermore, this ancient stone staircase is like a transition from history to the metal route up the mountain.  However, here, you have to be careful and be as silent as possible to avoid the wasp attacks.  2. From The Top Of The Lion Rock After climbing around 1200 steps, I reached the top of the Lion Rock. As Sigiriya is the tallest peak in the region, it offered me a 360-degree view of the surroundings. The sparkling rivers and lakes and the lush greenery of Central Sri Lanka won me over. The Pidurangala Rock was to the north, and it rose like a little volcano from the forest beneath.  3. The Mirror Wall  I walked through the remnants of the Sigiriya Rocks, the platforms, and the pools before I finally reached the Mirror Wall.  On my way, I also had an encounter with a giant lizard and a street dog who just knew how to pose.  Between the first plateau and the Lion’s Paws, there is a fork in the path. I took that path and turned left to come across the Mirror Wall.  With a plaster casing, the ancient Mirror Wall used to shine and reflect light. Also, today, when you visit the mirror wall, you can see thousands of graffiti. 4. The Frescoes From the Mirror Wall, I took a spiral staircase to reach the frescoes. However, for me, the cave paintings were more fascinating. There is a major debate about the figures drawn on the caves. Some claim that these are holy entities and they make offerings to them.  On the other hand, many say that these depict the concubines from the harem of the king.  5. The Cobra Head  I spotted the Cobra Head Cave while descending from the Sigiriya Rock. The cave resembles a cobra, which is ready to attack you with its fangs.  Furthermore, I spotted a reception hall and an ancient urinal.  Wildlife And Safety While Climbing The Sigiriya Rock  I could spot many monkeys while climbing the Sigiriya Rock. Also, the moat has signs that crocodiles can be spotted here. However, I could not find any.  Having said that, the lizards here are huge, and they are no less scary than crocodiles.  Furthermore, there is a caution regarding elephants roaming in the water gardens after dark.  Now, the scariest part. You will see huge wasp nests across various sections of the Sigiriya Rock. Keep silent and be responsible not to disturb those nests.  Amenities Available At The Sigiriya Rock Site There are toilet facilities at the base of the Sigiriya Rock. Furthermore, you will get a cafe or food stall near the ticket counter.  You can collect chips, ice creams, soft drinks, and water for this cafe.  Also, you can refill your bottle from the free fountain.  Tips And Tricks While Visiting The Sigiriya Rock  You have to carry enough water while climbing the Sigiriya Rock. Otherwise, you will be dehydrated, especially when climbing up after 8 AM.  Furthermore, you cannot take photos of the frescoes and cave paintings. Noone will allow you to ruin the historical artwork which has been there for more than 1600 years now.  Moreover, the stairs and paths are steep. So, if you have vertigo issues, you have to take precautions. Also, the path is full of wasps. So, be careful while climbing up the rock.

Kandy has been in the news recently for the last-over clincher between Pakistan and Sri Lanka in the last ICC T-20 World Cup tournament.  It is also good to see Kandy slowly getting its rhythm back after the major disruption in the beautiful Colombo-Kandy-Ella-Badulla railway due to the impact of Cyclone Ditwah in the latter part of 2025.  With a man-made lake at the epicenter, Kandy, in a bowl of mountains, was home to the last rulers from the Kandyan empire.  Today, it continues to play an important role in the politics, economy, and culture of Sri Lanka as the capital of the Central Province.  Sri Lanka is full of contradictions. From the rich Tamil Culture in Jaffna and the abandoned Buddhist ruins at the Ritigala Forest Monastery, to the bustling city of Kandy, it’s like visiting different countries with a few miles of traveling.  Moreover, Kandy is just 20 km away from Gampola, the home to the famous Ambuluwawa Tower, the symbol of natural diversity and religious inclusivity in Sri Lanka.  Hi, in today’s blog, I will talk about how to reach Kandy, the things to do in Kandy, where to stay, where to eat, and more.  How To Reach Kandy?  Kandy, one of the major cities of Sri Lanka, is easily accessible. If you are a budget traveler and a believer of the LowDownUnder Travel philosophy, you can take a local bus or train for the journey.  1. The Kandy Railway Station: The Major Gateway The Kandy Railway Station is the main gateway to the city if you are traveling from other parts of the island.  Also, this railway station on the beautiful Kandy to Ella line still exudes a colonial charm and shows Victorian influences in its architecture.  A train ride from Colombo to Kandy takes around 2 hours and 30 minutes, and based on the class, the ticket prices cost between LKR 300 and 1200.  You can even take a train on the Kandy to Ella route to explore the tea plantations, mountains, and the highland region.  However, being one of the most scenic railway routes in the world, tickets for these trains are always in high demand.  You can check out the available tickets at the official website of the Sri Lankan Railways. Tickets for a date get sold out even 1 month before.  2. Colombo To Kandy Bus  If you cannot book trains to reach Kandy. Don’t get disheartened, as buses are available from the Bastian Mawatha Bus Station in Colombo.  You can take an ordinary or AC intercity bus to reach Kandy from Colombo. The distance is around 120 km and the travel time is approximately 3-4 hours.  Also, the ticket prices start from LKR 360.  What Are The Things To Do In Kandy?  Kandy is the cultural capital of Sri Lanka. So, no wonder that it offers a good mix of colonial history, spiritual experience, and the serenity of the Kandy Lake.  Also, Kandy is home to the quintessential Singhalese food. I found the delicacies in Kandy to be way creamier and milder than the fiery food in Jaffna.  Nevertheless, I will talk about what to eat in Kandy a little later, and for now, let’s explore the things to do in Kandy and enjoy a mixed bag of experiences.  1. Visiting The Royal Botanic Gardens Hours Open: 7:30 AM to 5:30 PM Entry Fee: LKR 200 for Locals, LKR 3540 for Foreign Visitors From Kandy City, you can take a short tuk-tuk ride to reach the Royal Botanic Gardens. It is home to more than 4000 plants and covers an area of 147 acres.  A green oasis in the overwhelming city landscape, it also has an arboretum and decorative flower beds.  My favorite, however, was the majestic palm tree avenues. However, as the day grew, it got crowded by social media content creators.  Furthermore, there are giant bamboo trees. Another popular photography spot in the national park is the Mahaweli Ganga River suspension bridge. However, more than five people cannot get on the bridge at a time.  So, you may have to wait in a queue if you desperately want a photo for your socials.  Moreover, you will see bats hanging from trees, chipmunks, and monkeys in the botanical gardens. And don’t miss the Spice Garden here.  Also, if you feel hungry, you can buy drinks and snacks from the stalls inside and the local vendors outside the park. 2. Exploring The Udawattakele Forest Reserve Hours Open: 6 AM to 6 PM Entry Fee for Foreigners, LKR 830, For Locals: LKR 70  I walked for around 30 minutes to reach the Udawattakele Forest Reserve. You can even take a tuk-tuk ride from the Centre of Kandy.  It has some of the most famous caves in Candy and diverse fauna.  However, I did not expect that mother macaque monkeys would welcome me with their babies clinging to them.  After the grand entry, I chose the circular route around the park as I wanted to see the religious caves, the bathing pond, and the city viewpoint.  The Route  The green canopy stands in humility as you advance on the route, and now you are transported to a different world.  The birds were chirping, and I could hear the squeal of monkeys.  However, the highlight on that route was the Liana’s. These tree-sized vines created coils along the oath.  I followed the route upward and reached the City View Point.  The City View Point  From the City View Point, I loved the perspective of Kandy City and Lake. Then, walked further to come across the Cittavisuddhi Lena cave and othe two religious caves.  The cave had beautiful sculptures, paintings, and offerings by pilgrims. These are sacred to the Buddhist people.  However, overgrown trees and the fear of insects and bats deterred me from entering the cave and exploring the two other Buddhist caves.  Despite all the cautions, destiny had something different in store for me. There were leeches all over my legs, and luckily, I was carrying adequate salt to get rid of them.  The fellow tourists also helped to remove the leeches.  3. Visiting The Bahirawakanda Vihara Buddha Statue The Bahirawakanda Vihara Buddha Statue at the top of a hill is the guardian angel of Kandy. You need to take a short and steep walk to reach the Buddha Statue from the town.  You can even take a tuk-tuk.  Once you reach the statue, you can find the steps behind the magnificent statue and climb to higher vantage points looking over the other side of the city of Kandy.  Moreover, there is a small shop from where you can take trinkets and religious texts. The entry fee was 600 LKR when I visited last.  4. Exploring The Kandy Market I mentioned how an old lady in the Jaffna Public Market was the icebreaker during my trip to Jaffna.  In Kandy, it was the Kandy Market, which made me acquainted with the hilly region of Sri Lanka.  The market was near the Kandy Station. I visited it early in the morning and found vendors selling dried fish, bananas, fresh vegetables, and souvenirs.  5. Spending Moments By The Kandy Lake The Kandy Lake, or Lake Kandy, is at the heart of the city and is very close to the Temple of the Tooth.  It is a magnificent man-made lake around which you can take a walk of 2.1 miles. The pathway is called the Cloud Wall, and the highlight of my walk was finding out about the Queen’s bathing pavilion.  This ivory excellence reminded me of the regal past of the Kandy Lake.  I also spotted the ducks, busy schools of fish, and water monitor lizards.  Moreover, there is a well-groomed garden in the center of the lake. When I visited, it was in full bloom.  6. Walking To The Kandy Viewpoint After stretching my legs at the Kandy Lake, I took a short walk to reach the Kandy Viewpoint.  Hiking to the Kandy Viewpoint is one of the most delightful free things to do in Kandy. You can capture panoramic shots of the city from this viewpoint and interact with local hawkers for a meaningful cultural exchange.  7. Visiting The Asgiri Maha Vihara Pirivena - Buddhist Stupa And Temple If you are a Buddhist or someone eager to learn about the religion, visiting the Asgiri Maha Vihara Pirivena is one of the best things to do in Kandy.  This stupa is very close to the city, and I took the stairs across the train tracks to reach the stupa.  For me, the highlight of the stupa was the meditation room on the central floor. Balaji Dosai is a nice spot to try vegetarian food, especially dosa.  The Siri Ramya Hotel is the place to try Kottu Roti in Kandy. You can have it as spicy as you want. Also, you can combine them with different types of veggies, eggs, chicken, or mutton.  Another thing you must not miss in Kandy is the snacks available on the bus or train. You have to spend around $6 USD or VND 80,000–150,000 to rent a bike for a day.  Then, you can explore all corners of this UNESCO Protected Site and explore how history speaks in its every corner.  What Are The Things To Do In Ninh Binh?  The Ninh Binh Vietnam attractions are endless. You have to just figure out the best time to visit Vietnam based on your areas of interest.  Also, the things to do or the places to visit will depend on your duration of stay. Here, I have enlisted the activities that will fit well into your Ninh Binh itinerary for two days.  Nevertheless, here are the details on what to do in Ninh Binh.  1. Ninh Binh Trang An Tour Tràng An is designated by UNESCO as a heritage site, and you can reach it by taking a no-hassle boat ride from Ninh Binh.  The boatride in the serene rivers with the karst limestone cliffs in the background feels cinematic.  Furthermore, on the way, you will find a few temples where you can sniff history and appreciate the architecture.  Why Take A Trang An Tour You must take a Trang An Tour because it is not as expensive as a trip to Bến Thạch Bích. Hiking The Lying Dragon Mountain Or Núi Ngoạ Long The boat rides through the ancient waterways, watched over by the karst limestones, are not the only adventures offered by Ninh Binh.  You can plan a hike to the Lying Dragon Mountain top. You have to climb 500 steps to reach the top, and the view from there is unreal.  From the top, you will see the lush paddy fields and the waterways winding through the limestone cliffs. There is even a temple on a rocky spire.  Ideal Time For Hiking The Lying Dragon Mountain Sunrise and sunset hours are the best for hiking the Lying Dragon Mountain. You can enjoy the golden and red glow from the top of the mountain.  Also, if you are hiking early in the morning, you will have fewer people taking the steps to the top.  Entry Fee And Parking Tip  The entry fee for the Lying Dragon Mountain hike is 100,000 VND or $4 USD. However, please note that your parking fee is included in this fee.  The parking attendants are very aggressive, and they will often misguide you by saying that the parking lot is full. So, be strict about not paying them extra or giving in to their tricks. 3. A Visit To Bich Dong Pagoda The Bich Dong Pagoda in the Hoa Lu District was built by Ly Thai To. It is on the Truong Yen limestone mountain range, and its history dates back to 1428.  However, it was abandoned for many centuries until Tri The and Tri Kien discovered it in 1705. Furthermore, it was named the Bich Dong Pagoda or Green Pearl cave by Lord Trinh Sam of Dang Ngoai in 1774.  The Unique Structure Of The Bich Dong Pagoda  The pagoda has three levels, and the Dark Cave and the Xuyen Thuy Cave.  • Ha Pagoda Or Lower Pagoda The Ha Pagoda, or Lower Pagoda, has 5 rooms and 10 roofs.  Furthermore, there is a monolithic stone pillar adorned with the statues of Lord Buddha. The lower pagoda is used for worship, and you will smell incense once you enter it, and the smell evokes a spiritual feeling.  • Middle Pagoda Or The Trung Pagoda Then, you have to take 120 steps to reach the Middle Pagoda or the Trung Pagoda. It has beautiful tiles and scriptures written in Chinese.  Also, you will find the figures of Lord Buddha, flying dragons, turtles, fairies, and little boys here.  • The Upper Pagoda Or The Thuong Pagoda Finally, you will take 40 steps to reach the upper pagoda or Thuong Pagoda. There is a forecourt, two rooms, and a stone altar in the outer room of the pagoda.  Furthermore, there is an inner room, which has the idol of the Bodhisattva. Moreover, the Cam Lo pond near the upper cave is used for curing ailments.  • Dark Cave Bich Dong You will again climb 21 steps from the Upper Pagoda to reach the Dark Cave Bich Dong.  You will find a large bronze bell there in 1707. Furthermore, inside the cave wall, you will find amazing embossed pictures.  • Xuyen Thuy Cave The Xuyen Thuy Cave is semicircular in form and has a length of around 350 meters. In places, the cave is 6-15 meters in width.  4. Birdwatching At The Thung Nham Bird Valley The Thung Nham Bird Valley is a great spot for nature lovers. You will find the birds early in the morning or late afternoon.  However, if you are late in the morning or in the afternoon at the Thung Nham Bird Valley, you will find goats and ducks roaming.  Overall, the view of the field is amazing.  5. Exploring The Hoa Lu Ancient Capital Hoa Lu, or the ancient capital of Vietnam, is the place to enjoy the history of Ninh Binh.  Being here feels straight out of a movie scene, and this place of reign by the Le and Dinh dynasties, with the surrounding mountains looks straight from a movie scene. Where To Stay In Ninh Binh? You will find many budget-friendly homestays and hotels in Ninh Binh. Having said that, these are my favorite picks.  We stayed at the Ruby Homestay, and it offered a local and authentic experience. It was budget-friendly and still had amenities such as a pool.  However, if you want a more luxurious experience, you can even try the Ninh Binh Royal Homestay. It is a resort with a 3-star rating.  What To Eat In Ninh Binh? The mountain goat meat cooked in various styles, braised fish, rice, and crispy rice are some traditional Vietnamese dishes you can eat in Ninh Binh.  Furthermore, if you are more adventurous, you can try delicacies such as the snakehead fish salad and oakit or jackfruit snail.  Chookie's in Tam Coc and the local markets were our favorite go-to places for trying authentic Vietnamese cuisines and a mix of Western delicacies at times.  Is Ninh Binh Worth Visiting?  Yes, Ninh Binh is worth visiting, and it is the heart of Northern Vietnam for tourists. It has pagodas and temples that go back to the 10th century. The beauty of a tropical beach is truly unmatched - the beautiful sky stretching endlessly, the glistening white sand everywhere, coconut trees creating a perfect backdrop against the sky, and the sea.  Oh, the beautiful sea! The blue waters and the rhythmic soft crash of waves on the beach always end up transporting me to a land far away. In this land, I am a lone wolf, much like Robinson Crusoe on an adventure - and no, before you ask, I don’t need my man Friday here.  All the beauty around is the perfect companion - you don’t really need anything, especially if you have been seeking an escape from your daily, mundane corporate life.  I am not here to convince you about taking a much-needed vacation - because I’m sure you are already planning one. But I am here to share my favorite tropical beaches from around the world.  For context, my mother is a national-level professional diver - and it is only normal that I spent my teenage years and most of my 20s visiting beaches around the world - nothing makes me calmer than spending a few days by a beautiful beach.  So here I am with a singular purpose - to share my list of the best tropical beaches around the globe.  I’ve also attached a complete itinerary for each beach to help you out, in case you want to plan a visit to any of these beaches.  Stay tuned.  The 10 BEST Tropical Beaches In The World: So, without wasting time talking about boring beaches, let’s check out some of the most beautiful tropical beaches across the globe.  10. Makena Beach (Maui, Hawaii): I have a soft corner for Hawaii in my heart for years now - nearly a decade to be precise. I was only 19 when I first visited Hawaii on a family vacation.  Since then, I’ve returned a few times - because I just can’t get enough of this beautiful island.  Also known as the Big Beach, Makena Beach is located in Makena State Park on the island of Maui.  With white sand stretching for 3000 feet or more, Makena Beach is perhaps one of the longest beaches in Maui.  Moreover, it is a very popular tropical beach in Hawaii - and rightfully so! Also, I love how there is a rocky formation on the northern part of the beach. Additionally, if you want to climb this volcanic formation, a small (but beautiful) surprise awaits - welcome to the Little Beach, a popular nudist beach.  FYI, it is illegal to indulge in nude sunbathing when you are in Hawaii - but, on Little Beach, nobody really cares!  9. Nusa Lembongan (Bali, Indonesia): Of course, Nusa Lembongan is not the best tropical beach in Bali - the place has so much to offer when it comes to beautiful beaches.  But for me, Nusa Lembongan is special - and I recommend it heartily to everyone.  So what is it about Nusa Lembongan that appeals to me so much? It’s about the vibe for me, really - I love the low-key, chill vibes here.  It was a relaxing weekend. Also, I stayed with my partner at this stunning beachfront property with a pool overlooking the beach.  Additionally, during low tide, the beach exposed a seaweed farm - it was so cool. This was an epic experience, especially the sunset - it was so serene, reflective, and deeply romantic.  8. Yasawa Island (Fiji): Fiji is a spectacular country with its string of stunning islands.  I was only 17 when I traveled to Fiji for the first time, and I'm so thankful that I was able to visit one of Fiji’s most remote islands, the Yasawa Island.  While I haven’t been back to Fiji in the past 12 years, I can say Yasawa continues to be one of my favorite tranquil escapes.  Interestingly, the only way to reach Yasawa Island is fly on a puddle-hopper plane or take a boat. Since there is no runway on the island, the eight-seater aircraft uses a grass strip. Moreover, the island is home to only one resort - the Yasawa Island Resort and Spa.  Because the place is so remote, nature feels untouched here - the ocean and the beach are absolutely clean, tranquil, and mesmerizing!  So, if you have been looking for a secluded tropical beach, this is your answer. It’s practically the middle of nowhere - somewhere in the middle of the vast South Pacific Ocean, on a small island.  7. Eagle Beach (Aruba): While the beautiful waters of Aruba are famous, I suggest visiting just for the fun island charm you will find here.  Interestingly, the most popular beach in Aruba is Palm Beach. But it is also the most crowded spot in Aruba, thanks to the high-rise hotels and famous tour operators. However, it wasn’t really my thing. For starters, I hate very crowded places, and everything seemed too commercial. I am more of an organic person. As a result, Eagle Beach had a different kind of appeal.  The water at Eagle Beach is calm and beautiful. Moreover, it is not crowded, which makes the entire vibe of the place very low-key and peaceful (just what I like) 6. Grace Bay Beach (Turks & Caicos): The Turks & Caicos are famous for their tranquil, turquoise waters and beaches with white sand.  But if I had to pick my favorite beach here, it would always be Grace Bay Beach. Why? Because you can walk for miles on uninterrupted stretches of sand with plenty of quiet, serene corners.  Moreover, small markets and small restaurants are scattered along the beach, without making the experience too commercial for tourists.  Also, this is the most popular beach located in Providenciales with fancy hotels and too many tourists.  But don’t let that discourage you - the beach is long enough for you to find your peace, much like I did.  5. Carlisle Bay (Barbados): Without a doubt, Barbados is home to some of the Caribbean’s best tropical beaches. And while I’ve been here a number of times, Carlisle Bay is my absolute favorite.  Located just outside Bridgetown, Carlisle Bay has a ton of activities on offer. From sunbathing and snorkelling to paddleboarding, there’s so much to try out. Moreover, there are several nice hotels here, and in spite of all the accommodations on the bay, the place is relatively quiet. Also, I fell in love with the crystal-clear water here.  And the best part? You might just end up spotting a turtle if you are out snorkeling. 4. Kalalau Beach (Kauai, Hawaii):  If you have been planning a trip to Kauai Island in Hawaii, chances are you have definitely come across the NaPali Coast, and more importantly, the famous Kalalau Trail.  So, I’ve been to Kauai Island thrice, and it is the jaw-dropping landscape that appeals to me so much - it is unlike anything I have ever seen.  FYI, the NaPali Coast is a rugged, mountainous region - there are no roads, and accessibility is zero. The only way to commute here is either by taking a boat or hiking for 11 miles (17 kms).  In case you choose to hike, note that the trail is right beside cliffs that are over 2000 feet high.  While this is definitely not for anyone faint-hearted, once you hike to the destination, you will be mesmerized - Kalalau Beach awaits you! Located in the gorgeous Kalalau Valley, the beach has a stunning backdrop. What makes Kalalau Beach so special is how difficult it is to reach this place.  But be careful - this place is not meant for swimming. The currents and rip-tide are no joke. Plus, people have actually died or gotten injured in this area. Also, if you are hiking, you will need a permit beforehand.  Additionally, you can also hike specific parts of the valley via another park - this park offers a different perspective of the valley and the beach.  You can also go for a helicopter ride in this region - the views are absolutely stunning!  3. El Nido (Palawan, The Philippines): I visited the Philippines in 2021, and on my first visit itself, El Nido had my heart.  Located in Palawan, the beautiful El Nido is famous for its gorgeous limestone cliffs, diverse marine life, and its islands.  Moreover, the beach is home to beautiful reefs. As a result, diving here was an exceptional experience. Plus, the landscape was spectacular. I just hope that the marine life in this region continues to be untouched.  Also, I loved how you need a boat to visit most islands in this region - it makes everything remote, unique, and memorable.  2. Baa Atoll (The Maldives): Located in the beautiful (and very popular) Maldives, Baa Atoll is a UNESCO biosphere reserve - and that too since 2011.  FYI, the Maldives has only one such biosphere reserve - and this is precisely why you must consider planning a trip to Baa Atoll.  Due to the vast ecological diversity in Baa Atoll, including one of the biggest groups of coral reefs located in the Indian Ocean, the beach received UNESCO’s official designation.  Moreover, the area is protected and has several beautiful beaches. Also, most of the resorts here have private beaches with crystal-clear water.  In addition, I found a very cool house reef near the beach - you can explore and check it out.  1. Bimini (The Bahamas): Located in the Bahamas, Bimini is my favorite tropical beach in the whole world. Of course, you can disagree with me and claim there are better beaches.  TBH, it is possible, but for me, Bimini is home! I’ve visited this island more than five times, and I am definitely going back soon.  If you dream about swimming at a stunning, tropical beach with dolphins on your side, then you should definitely consider visiting Bimini at least once.
