There is a particular kind of quiet that settles over a beach town when you cannot think of a proper definition for it.  Nilaveli Beach has it. Still, it is one of the 13 beaches in Sri Lanka that Lonely Planet has highlighted as the best coastal escapes in January 2026.  This recognition once again solidifies the position of Sri Lanka as an international tropical destination.  Do you want to know more about Nilaveli Beach? Here, I will discuss my first experience in this coastal town, how to reach there, and how I spent my time here.  My First Impression Of Nilaveli Beach  I arrived at Nilaveli Beach in the late afternoon. The beach looked magical with the golden light.  Also, instead of traffic horns or music, the rhythmic slap of fishermen pulling in nets a few hundred meters down the shore was the first sound to reach my ears.  This sound had set the right tone for all the experiences that followed at Nilaveli Beach.  How I Reached Nilaveli Beach? Nilaveli is on the northeastern coast of Sri Lanka. It is also 16 kilometers north of Trincomalee.  Furthermore, the distance between Nilaveli and Colombo is around 264 kilometers. So, it is a journey of approximately 6 hours by road.  However, you can also fly to the small domestic airport of Trincomalee. Tuk-tuks and local buses run the short hop between Trincomalee town and Nilaveli itself without much fuss. Nevertheless, I made the trip overland after finishing up in Kalpitiya on the northwest coast.  I cut across through the interior, and I would recommend that route if you want to enjoy a longer east-coast itinerary.  Taking the route also puts you within easy striking distance of Mannar if you are willing to backtrack a little.  Nilaveli Beach: It Has An Older Résumé Than You Can Guess Nilaveli is different from many other beaches on the east coast as it has been in the tourism business since the 1970s.  Then, it had a couple of beachfront hotels, and those were quite popular among the tourists making their way to this part of the country.  However, that tourism scene got interrupted by the rampage of the Civil War for two decades.  The Civil War shaped so much of what I saw further north in Kilinochchi and Mullaitivu. However, it emptied the coastline here.  After the war ended in 2009, Nilaveli Beach has been very cautious in its attempt to return to form.  It did not have the resort boom like Pasikudah further south. However, that has been a blessing in disguise as fewer beach clubs have ensured longer silences and more space.  What Is So Magical About Nilaveli?  The Nilaveli Beach itself is the main attraction with pale and soft sand running for kilometers.  Furthermore, the gentle shallow gradient made it safe for swimming, and it offered enough space. So, even after a decent crowd strength, it did not feel crowded.  I walked a good stretch of it one morning before the heat set in and passed maybe a dozen people the entire way. You can just sit offshore and unwind. However, I chose to explore more.  What I Did At Nilaveli? I took a boat ride to the Pigeon Island National Park, one of the few marine national parks in the country.  It has an extensive coral reef, the home to over 100 species of corals, 300 species of fish, turtles, and blacktip reef sharks.   Snorkeling At Nilaveli Beach  I booked a morning snorkeling trip and spent a couple of hours drifting over coral gardens, watching for the blacktip reef sharks the island is known for. They were small and shy! I also spotted some green turtles.  Here, let me share some important details and how we can be responsible in our behavior here.  The reef is not as pristine as it used to be decades ago. After the 2009 tsunami impact and to minimize the traffic impact, the government has capped daily numbers and started rehabilitation work. So, if you have snorkeling plans, especially in the peak seasons from May to October, you need to book your slot in advance. A Trip To Trincomalee, Just Down The Road  I allocated one day for myself away from the sand to explore Trincomalee proper.  Fort Frederick was built by the Portuguese and later expanded by the Dutch and British. It sits on a headland with genuinely dramatic views out over the harbor. The harbor is further one of the finest in the world. Inside the fort grounds, the Koneshwaram Temple was the highlight for me. Furthermore, you can visit the Kanniya hot springs and the Uppuveli Beach too. Nilaveli Beach wins with its honesty, and the reef here is really vibrant.  Pasikudah is Sri Lanka's east coast dressed up for a resort brochure. The first time I reached Batticaloa, a quaint town in eastern Sri Lanka, I did not expect to experience the slow but steady flame of human protest.  It was 9 AM in the morning, and I noticed a small group of people gathering near the Kallady Bridge. They held up placards written on old sarees, torn clothes, and newspapers.  In a single line, they walked for around 2 kilometers peacefully and ended their walk at the Gandhi Park.  Known as the Batticaloa Justice Walk, it has continued since 12th May 2022, the day after the GotaGoGama (GGG) protest site was attacked by mobs, followed by Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa's resignation.  This protest walk has been a movement demanding a fundamental change, and the participants demand accountability for the people who disappeared during the period of conflict.  While this protest walk won me over, as I come from the land of Satyagraha and a long history of protests for political, social, and humanitarian reasons, I felt more eager to know the town and explore the top attractions.  What Is The Location Of Batticaloa Town? Batticaloa Town, the administrative capital of the Batticaloa district, is in the eastern province of Sri Lanka.  This coastal town on a flat island is surrounded by a large lagoon and the Indian Ocean.  Pasikudah, a popular beach destination in Sri Lanka, is just 35 km northwest of Batticaloa Town. Also, Trincomalee is the nearest major city to Batticaloa, and it is located 111 km south of Batticaloa.  How To Reach Batticaloa?  Batticaloa Town is easy to reach as it is well-connected to Colombo by road, train, and air.  By Train  It has the Batticaloa Railway Station, which receives direct express trains such as Meenagaya from the Colombo Fort Railway Station.  The 6075 Batticaloa Special is the fastest train between these two stations. It left Colombo Fort at 3:15 PM and reached Batticaloa at 9:52 PM. Also, the third-class ticket price was LKR 1400.  By Bus Regular bus services are available from the Bastian Mawatha Bus Terminal in Colombo to Batticaloa. Based on the traffic, the journey will take 6 to 7 hours. The ticket price is around LKR 1500. From this bus stop, you will also get buses to the cultural capital, Kandy, and the Tamil hub in Sri Lanka, Jaffna.  Furthermore, the Batticaloa International Airport (BTC) in SLAF Batticaloa is the main hub for regional air and chartered flight connectivity.  The travel time by air is around 1 hour and 15 minutes, and the ticket price will be around LKR 20000.  Transport Within Batticaloa You will get tuk-tuks for local transportation in this coastal town, and based on the distance covered, the charges will be between LKR 150 and LKR 400.  Also, if you want, you can rent a tuk-tuk for the entire day at a negotiated price.  What Is Batticaloa Famous For?  History, colonial heritage, and spirituality merge in the small town of Batticaloa.  So, next time you are in Sri Lanka, you must plan a visit to Batticaloa. I came across the Unnichchai Tank as I proceeded toward the lagoon from Batticaloa.  The entire route is scenic, with low forest extending over the serene lagoon.  Furthermore, the Unnichchai Tank is an important landmark as it supplies water for the entire area.  Also, its modern concrete architecture emulates the ancient stone structure of the tank. Almost every visitor notices the golden roof or moat around it when visiting the Temple of the Tooth, Kandy.  However, the first thing I noticed was the queue.  It was an ordinary Tuesday morning, around 9 AM.  I saw monks, schoolchildren in white, and visitors with cameras filling the same security screening.  However, I was not surprised to see the crowd at the Temple of the Tooth, or the Sri Dalada Maligawa. Built around a single relic, it has shaped the island's politics and identity for over 1,600 years. Also, as the living spiritual centre of Sri Lankan Buddhism, it deserves all the attention.  In addition, the temple has been in the news more than once in the past two years.  In April 2025, a rare public exposition of the Tooth Relic drew an estimated 450,000 devotees in a single day. The tooth relic arrived in Sri Lanka around seventeen centuries ago, between 301 and 328 CE.  The temple has been rebuilt, burned down, and rebuilt again more times than we can think of.  How Did The Tooth Relic Come To India? According to Buddhist tradition, after the Buddha's parinirvana, his left canine tooth was preserved in the Kingdom of Kalinga.  The Kingdom of Kalinga is now the state of Odisha in India.  However, there was unrest during the reign of King Guhasiva. So, Princess Hemamali and her husband, Prince Danta, took the tooth relic out of Kalinga. The relic was hidden inside the hair of the princess to ensure a safe passage.  They safely brought it to Sri Lanka during the reign of King Kithsiri Meghavanna, dated around 301 to 328 AD.  Since then, the relic has become inseparable from Sri Lankan kingship.  It was said that whichever king had it would have the right to rule.  Also, the relic was moved from capital to capital.  It came through Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Dambadeniya, Yapahuwa, Kurunegala, Gampola, and finally reached Kotte.  Then, it came to Kandy, the last of the royal capitals of Sri Lanka.  A Timeline Of Sri Dalada Maligawa The building we see today is not the original structure. It is the product of at least four rebuilds across two and a half centuries. It was shaped by Portuguese raids, a Dutch fire, and later renovations by successive Kandyan kings. Surviving Invasions, War, And Time Even after such a long history, the rituals at the site have never stopped.  The rituals have continued through Portuguese raids, Dutch fire, the British taking Kandy, and even after the 1998 bombing.  Today, Mahanayake theros of the Malwatta and Asgiriya monastic chapters and a lay custodian, Diyawadana Nilame, are the custodians of the daily rituals.  They also take care of the preservation of the relic.  Why Is The Temple Of Tooth So Important?  The Temple of Tooth is not just the most photographed temple in Sri Lanka.  For Sri Lankan Buddhists, it is the living head of state for the faith.  This explains why the atmosphere inside the relic feels very different from a typical heritage monument.  A Living Symbol Of Buddhist Sri Lanka The possession of the tooth relic was the validation of a king’s right to rule the island. So, it moved between capitals alongside the seat of government for centuries.  This symbolic weight has not disappeared with the monarchy.  Sri Lankan presidents and senior officials still make a point of visiting the temple during the Esala Perahera each year. Thus, they continue a tradition of state association with the relic that predates colonial rule by well over a thousand years. The Kandy Esala Perahera The biggest annual event of Kandy is Esala Perahera.  It is a firelit procession of dancers, drummers, and elaborately dressed tusker elephants.  These festivities take us back to the 1600 year old tradition of the temple.  In 2026, the festival ran across ten nights from 18 to 28 August. The five nights of the Kumbal Perahera were followed by five nights of the grand Randoli Perahera. The festival closed with the Diya Kapeema water-cutting ceremony.  If your Sri Lanka trip lines up with late July or August, it is worth checking that year's dates on the temple's official website before booking. The festival follows the lunar calendar and shifts annually. So, budget a bit more time than "just the shrine" if you want to see all five.  The machines installed at the temple itself issue the tickets.  However, many outside individuals or agencies claim to sell the tickets to the temple. These are not valid.  Entry Guidelines All visitors and their belongings go through screening at the entrance with scanning machines. So, leave bulky luggage behind. Plastic and polythene, including for offerings, are discouraged inside the premises. Pets are not permitted anywhere on the temple grounds. Visitors with mobility needs can arrange transport from the main entrance and lift access by calling the temple's administration office in advance. What It Is Actually Like To Visit Photos of the golden roof and the octagonal Pattirippuwa do not really prepare you for how the temple feels once you are inside. It is smaller, quieter in some corners and far more crowded in others. Also, every activity here happens around the ritual clock rather than tourist convenience. Walking Through The Complex After the security check, the path leads to a moat. It also goes through the Mahawahalkada, the ornately carved main entrance, before opening into the temple courtyard.  The two-storey main shrine sits at the centre. Also, its upper floor is carved from ivory. The golden canopy and jewelled caskets surrounding the relic itself are visible only from a respectful distance.  The stonework, including the moonstone carving at the entrance and the Water Wall running along the moat, is stunning.  The holes hold oil lamps, and you can only focus on them if the crowd is a little less.  The Puja Ceremony You must reach the temple at least 15-20 minutes before the puja ceremony.  This is when drummers play the traditional hewisi rhythms and the inner chamber doors open. So, you will get the closest view most visitors will ever get of the golden reliquary.  The 9:30 AM service tends to be the most manageable for tourists in terms of crowd size and daylight for photography. However, the temple authority does not allow flash photography near the shrine. Beyond The Main Shrine The Tusker Museum in particular houses the preserved remains of Raja, the legendary tusker who carried the relic casket in the Esala Perahera for over 50 years. It is a detail most first-time visitors miss. The temple survived a suicide truck bombing on 25 January 1998. It was days before Sri Lanka's 50th independence anniversary celebrations, with Kandy as the epicenter.  The attack damaged the facade. However,  nothing happened to the relic, and daily rituals resumed within days. The octagonal Pattirippuwa pavilion, one of the most photographed parts of the complex, was not part of the original design at all. It was an addition between 1798 and 1815, under the island's last king, Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe. Newborns can be formally "offered" to the temple as part of a blessing ceremony at 10:00 AM and 7:00 PM daily. The child has to be between three and six months old. What Is The Best Time To Visit The Temple Of The Tooth?  The temple is open 365 days. However, a few timing choices make a real difference to the temple visit experience.  You will enjoy the calmest ambiance in the temple at 5 AM when the temple opens. I visited the temple at 9 AM.  It was just before the temple opened. The crowd was large, but they were in a disciplined queue.  So, I got the chance to explore the temple and take the best photographs.  Moreover, if your dates allow, you can visit the temple during the Kandy Esala Perahera in July or August. Also, the Poya (full moon) days and Wednesdays, when the Nanumura Mangallaya bathing ritual takes place, draw larger numbers of local devotees.
