Whether you want to spend your time charting the rugged terrain or take a more aesthetic tour, Moab will leave you spoiled for choice. Arches National Park For good reason, Arches National Park is one of the most well-liked national parks in the union and one of the best things to do in Moab Utah. In addition to many other fascinating rock formations, the park is home to over 2,000 naturally occurring stone arches. Popular summertime activities in this area include hiking and camping but remember to pack plenty of water because summer temperatures can soar. Both inside the park and near Moab, there are many campgrounds. If you're more of a cabin person than a tent camper, there are even some stunning locations in the La Sal Mountains. It is impossible to visit Moab, Utah, and not take in Arches National Park. Just off the highway, you can easily explore many of the park's iconic features. Moreover, you can take a guided van tour in the morning or evening or go for a solo drive. A guided van tour also has several benefits. You can get away from the wheel so you can look around the park and have a good time. Your guide will interpret what you see along with pointing you in the direction of some of the greatest locations for pictures. You will be astounded by the enormous "loop" that thousands of years of rushing water have chiseled out of the rock from Dead Horse Point's grand viewpoint. One of the most well-liked activities in Moab these days is going to this area. The area is named after the way 19th-century cowboys used the point's distinctive formation to create a natural corral. It required minimal barricading for the single entrance and exit. The irony was that many of the horses perished from heat exhaustion and dehydration. They were only a few thousand feet away. Just make sure you stick to the paths that are designated, as some are very far away and hard to get to. When it's not too hot or too snowy, spring and fall are the ideal seasons to visit. Sunset Hummer Safaris on the Hell's Revenge Trail are among the greatest activities to undertake on a summer evening in Moab. You will be riding over some of the most unusual terrains on Earth in a rock-steady Hummer. Driven by knowledgeable guides, you can take in this kaleidoscope of colors falling upon the Slickrock. Possibly the most well-known 4x4 trail in the world, Hell's Revenge Trail is undoubtedly one of the best things to do in Moab Utah. Hiking Since hiking is one of the top things to do in Moab Utah, why not incorporate some Creekside trails, arches, and hidden grottoes into your hike? Hikers frequently scale the Grandstaff Canyon in search of some shade and unusual desert flora beside a bubbling stream. But they eventually return to the trailhead at the base. Its breathtaking position, background, and sun angle are what make it so famous for Olympic Torch parades, license plates, and countless postcards. You can't help but wonder if this landscape is better known as "Landscape Arch" because it is so visually appealing. The real Landscape Arch appears to defy gravity with its fragile, slender, and, well, delicate profile. It is an easy hike but much harder to fit in a camera frame. These two visually stunning and somewhat strenuous arches are well worth the hike. Hike To Fisher Towers From certain vantage points within Castle Valley below, these enormous towers seem like they belong to a National Park or monument. They rise almost a thousand feet above the desert floor. Rock climbing is a hugely popular activity in Moab, and experienced climbers can enjoy a demanding and rewarding view from the Fisher Towers. In Moab, beginner climbs are advised elsewhere. It's breathtaking enough to hike the winding trail at the base of the towers. Ropes are not necessary to enjoy this breathtaking view! It truly gives you the impression that you have been somewhere deserving of the moniker "The West." The way the area glows at dusk, and the silhouettes of notable rock castles in the valley below are awe-inspiring. In the afternoon and evening, there's not much shade, so be sure to pack water for the hike. Ride the Moab Zip Line You can soar like a raven from domes, sandstone ledges, and fins across a vast desert rimmed by snow-capped mountains. Zipline tours are always fun, no matter where you are. Better yet, you can easily reach this incredibly entertaining activity in Moab from the northern end of Main Street. A wild 4x4 ride up the mountainside will take you above the town and onto the edge of a completely different landscape. It is otherwise blinded from view. These tours take place nearly all day, so you can schedule them around a lot of the other Moab activities we've already covered. Overlook the Dead Horse Point Undoubtedly, one of the best things to do in Moab, Utah, is to take in the expansive view from this conveniently located overlook during the morning or evening hours. This State Park will inspire you even in the flat midday sun. As the Colorado River approaches the deeper maze of gorges in Canyonlands National Park, its goosenecks flow hundreds of feet below. It includes the Cataract Canyon. Consider going on a guided mountain biking tour on the easy-to-moderate trails. They circle the Dead Horse Point area if you're looking for an enjoyable activity to do while you're here. There are several breathtaking scenic overlooks on the tour. Rent a Jeep to Remote Parts In Moab, driving a Jeep seems natural. Cars are perfectly adequate for getting around. But there is something about the big, bristly Yokohama tires, the satellite radio, and the ice-filled cooler in the back. It just makes you want to explore. Moab is a haven for off-road adventure seekers. There are odd dirt roads in the area around Moab. They go in all directions without going anywhere. But there are many breathtaking viewpoints along the way! The early 1950s and 1960s uranium mining boom left Moab with an abundance of these "off-road" (or dirt roads) routes that lead nowhere. Rock Climbing Yosemite Valley and El Capitan are not the only well-known locations among rock climbers. Known as a tributary of Canyonlands National Park, Indian Creek features some of the most sought-after crack climbs in the world. The summit of the Fisher Tower is a momentous occasion commemorated in many TV commercials and gear catalogs. Some of them are Castleton Tower or the Titan. Grandview Point in Canyonlands National Park It's difficult not to recommend visiting Mesa Arch while at Dead Horse Point. It is barely minutes from Dead Horse Point State Park and lies just beyond the border of Canyonlands National Park. Mesa Arch, which frames the scene with a massive arch, offers a similar incredible view as Dead Horse Point however, from a different angle that faces east. For the classic shot of the early light glowing under the arch, photographers swarm to this conveniently located overlook. However, if you happen to visit on a Sunday afternoon and appear to be alone, you may feel so reverent that you may want to take off your shoes. However, you should probably wait to do that until you've located a seat. Consider heading south on Grandview Point Road to the road's namesake point at the end if you want to turn it into a Sunday drive. It really is quite grand. You will wonder what lies beneath those depths and around the corner. You should also consider another exciting way to explore the stone wilderness that lies in front of you. Multi-Day Rafting Trip If you are serious about getting off the beaten path while in Moab, then you must consider an overnight expedition-level rafting trip. These multi-day whitewater rafting experiences transport you to and from isolated dir airstrips. It is as far-flung as an Alaskan bush plane could travel. Imagine spending four or five days floating nearly 100 miles. Then, you could come back to Moab to complete whatever else is on your Moab bucket list. You will be a different person after participating in these "expedition-level" whitewater rafting experiences. Suddenly, you will know more about Moab and, more significantly, about yourself!  Wrapping Up Moab is one of the world's most breathtaking travel destinations. It promises breathtaking views at every turn, with deep canyons, tall mountains, and roaring rivers among its many natural features. It is imperative that this priceless area be preserved for future generations. When visiting, always stick to the trails and show respect for wildlife. Whether it is the beaches or the museums, there are several things to explore in the USA! But what is stopping me and you from visiting these places? I don’t know about you but I need to pay my bills you’all!   My work often requires me to go to the office Monday to Friday, which makes it difficult for me to go on a trip without any plans! So, I have found a solution, creating a list of February vacation ideas. What's more, I will be sharing these with you so that I can get some realistic feedback on my random impulses!   By impulse, let me explain! I am a mix of everything, I love reading a book and vegetating on a chair in front of the sea. While on the other hand, I love putting on my hiking shoes and climbing a hill just to watch that beautiful sunset!   Now you know, what I am talking about! Therefore, let me list some ideas that will help you decide on which ones you want to do. This list will also help you identify the type of traveler you are as an individual! You will also get to know about some of the best places to visit in February!   Here are the February Vacation Ideas for a Busybody!   Either it's chilly or it's just the perfect warm that will create a beautiful environment for your vacation. When considering February vacation ideas, I have some of the coolest ones especially because I keep thinking about them all the time.   In the USA, you have several places which offer a variety of activities! You have to consider the temperature behavior along with your budget. If you are someone who is looking for adventure, you might need to keep money aside for adventure sports.   Furthermore, if you have planned to visit museums and gardens, walk a lot, and eat local food, well your budget will be much more friendly. Overall, there are specific factors when you are planning vacation ideas, so let me share some of mine!   1. Perform Beach Activities   February is a perfect month when a lot of really hot places have the perfect weather! For example, The Keys in Florida has several beaches and night life so does Miami. Additionally, how can we forget about some of the best cruises from Miami? These are the perfect places for my February vacation ideas.   With a corporate life giving me back pain, I would love to sprawl across the beach with a book and a drink in my hand. Furthermore, I would also love to try snorkeling and surfing. Sitting on the beach, taking in the view of the Caribbean waters, I can already imagine the sand shining on my toe!   One of the coolest beach activities that you can do in February is snorkeling in a sea cave at Captain Cook Kealakekua Bay. Yes, weather plays an important role but if you are lucky, you can encounter whales and wild dolphins.   Also, if you visit Hawaii, you can have one of the best experiences of whale watching! Get on a raft boating cruise to watch Whales while on your way to Molokini Crater.   2. Checking out the artifacts and exhibitions is one such hobby of mine and what better way to spend some vacation time in February than doing something I love?   Be it, San Diego or Palm Springs, I can visit museums every month if I can manage a day off! Furthermore, as a corporate individual, I am so habituated to sitting on a chair for long periods that I welcome a visit to an aquarium while on a vacation.   I visited the Butterfly World once when I went to Coconut Creek, Florida. It is the largest in the world and one of its kind with approximately 20,000 butterflies living there! You must check this out when you are planning a vacation in February with the perfect environment.   Another beautiful place you must visit is the North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher! It is a perfect place if you love watching fishes and other mammals in their natural environment. Additionally, you cannot miss the magical Animal Kingdom at Walt Disney when you are traveling with kids.   3. Celebrate Festivals and Events   There is a festive feel to February, what’s with the Mardi Gras, Chinese New Year, Valentine's Day, and others. I am all in for festivals and events when it means I can eat, celebrate, and be merry while on vacation.   I would prefer to visit New Orleans in February or March so that I can participate in parades, eat rich food, and share laughter and happiness with all. Did you know it is an official state-declared holiday?   Well, what could be better than going on a date with my boyfriend while on vacation and ushering in Valentine’s Day? A romantic dinner and sharing some special moments during a vacation seems like the perfect way to relax and enjoy life.   When in New Orleans, you can also take one of the best Caribbean cruises offered by Norwegian Cruise Line or Carnival Cruise Line. You will be amazed at the views of the ports like Progreso and Grand Canyon along with inclusive activities.   4. Explore Local Markets, Shopping Centers and Streets   If you are someone like me who loves exploring local markets, artisans, and shopping streets, you know what I am going to say. One of the coolest February vacation ideas for me is to stroll around local markets, smell fresh produce, and buy home decor and flowers.   Trying out a new pair of sunglasses or a jewelry bit at a local street shop is my perfect way of spending my vacation. With beautiful weather, especially if you visit New York City, you can check out shop displays and splurge on yourself a bit.   If you are looking for some affordable shopping, you can visit the Reading Terminal Market and Maui Swap Meet! Furthermore, there are other streets for shopping such as Lincoln Road. Let’s not forget Manhattan in NYC, when talking about shopping!   5. Attempt adventure sports   I am a bit of an adventure freak when I want to be! Especially because 9 to 5, my life is so boring, I hunt out for some adrenaline shocks. So why don’t we try bungee jumping in Hansen Bridge, Idaho, or hike a trail in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, California?    How about taking a hot air balloon ride at Sedona, Arizona? I have always wanted to go ziplining, so can we try that at Catskills, New York where you can zip at the height of 60 feet across a 3200-foot cable?   You can take a hiking tour in the lower Antelope Canyon, Arizona. It can be a little sandy and rocky so be careful about the shoes you choose! There are vibrant passageways creating a kaleidoscope for you when you ascend the canyon!   If you want to ski, the perfect destination for you will be Park City Mountain in Utah! Also, Montana has resources where you will get great groomers and can freeride. Another adventure is that you can go on an airboat tour to visit the reptile and alligator exhibit at the Florida Everglades.   You can then come back taking one of the best cruises from Florida with delicious BBQ options and an open bar, a perfect night out for a group of friends!   Any new Ideas?   Why do you think you need February vacation ideas? I traveled extensively across Jaffna, the Tamil heartland of Sri Lanka. The Delft Island, a boat ride away, offered the most historically and culturally enriching experience during my entire Jaffna trip. Yes, the day trip to Delft Island was a bit rushed, as you have to catch the 8 AM boat from Kurikadduwan Jetty. Otherwise, your entire day will be ruined. However, after traveling 30 kms off the coast of Jaffna, Delft Island unfolded its mystery before my eyes. Overall, it is a limestone and coral island that has all the drama. At the same time, there is something very authentic about this island. Local history and culture exude through every corner. That is what won me over as a follower of the TravelDownUnder principles. Here is more in this travel guide. I will begin with where Delft Island is located and the modes of travel to and around Delft Island. Then, I will talk about its history, significance, and things to see. Where Is Delft Island? Delft Island is in the Palk Strait, and it separates Southern India from Sri Lanka. It is a small island with a maximum width of 6 km and a length of 8 km. With such a tiny landscape, it is surprising to find out how much the island has to offer to the visitors.  How To Visit Delft Island From Jaffna? As I have mentioned, if you include a visit to Delft Island in your Jaffna travel itinerary, you have to be very particular about your timings. You have to reach Kurikadduwan Harbour at least by 7:30 AM to catch the ferry at 8 AM. To reach the harbour, you will have to take bus 776 from the Jaffna Bus Station, or you can take a tuk-tuk.  The bus ticket costs LKR 90, and the tuk-tuk ride costs LKR 2000. Furthermore, the return ferry from Delft Island starts at 2:30 PM. Once you reach the Kurikadduwan Jetty, you will get the bus to Jaffna. The return bus was very crowded, and you must not expect the best infrastructure during the jetty ride. Still, the hassle is worth it. How To Move Around Delft Island? Once you arrive on Delft Island, you can take a tuk-tuk ride to explore the main attractions. Many tuk-tuk drivers wait for the tourists aligned with the arrival time of the ferries. You can book a tuk-tuk ride for 4-5 hours, and the cost will be around LKR 2000-2500. Why Visit Delft Island, Jaffna? The history of Delft Island goes back to the time of the Chola Dynasty. Since then, the island has gone through various reigns, including the Portuguese, Dutch, and finally the British colonial periods. As you walk through the roads graced by palm trees and the sea breeze touches your cheeks, you will find how history speaks here, through the ruins, dirt roads, coral walls, and quaint villages. You suddenly start missing your home, especially the afternoons of summer vacations, when time was simpler. There is a rustic charm here that you cannot miss. The locals here are very hospitable. However, the only thing I missed was that there were no restaurants. So, if you are planning a food tour in Jaffna, Delft Island can be a disappointment. Still, here are more reasons to visit this beautiful coral island. Delft Island: A True Hidden Gem And In Close Encounter With Nature After Lonely Planet named Sri Lanka the best travel destination in the world in 2019, Colombo and Kandy became overcrowded. That’s a big turn-off for backpackers like me. So, it’s important to find a break in the north of the country and visit Jaffna temples and other attractions, where you can experience the spirituality, understand the local people, and most importantly, experience the story of human resilience. This is because this part of the country is still rebuilding after the civil war ended in 2009. Delft Island. Jaffna takes these humane aspects and the rawness of Northern Sri Lanka to a new level. In this age of 5G, Delft Island still has 3G connections. Also, the rise in sea levels still impacts the crops, ancient sites, homes, and the entire livelihood of the island. So, when I started exploring the island, I had to walk through the ankle-deep water in the fields. I had no problems in cherishing the experience as everything reminded me of my home.  Stories That Make Delf Island Fascinating Ancient Tamil legends and forgotten colonial ambitions have intertwined in the landscape and livelihood of Delf Island. Moreover, you have to listen to the inside stories here if you enjoy a good mix of history and local folklore. 1. The Growing Stone  There is a limestone outcrop on the island that keeps growing physically. Now, scientifically, it is the calcite and coral deposits that are to be blamed for the growth. However, for local devotees and the followers of Lord Mahadeva like me, it is a Swayambhu Lingam. This self-manifested form of Lord Shiva resembles Nakathampiran, or a multi-headed cobra. I made some offerings there, following the local customs, and had my moments. 2. The Giant’s Footprint Nobody Remembers The indentation close to the Sarapiddi area grabbed my attention. It was around 40 inches in length. There is a local belief that this is the left footprint of Lord Hanuman. Some even say that it is the footprint of Lord Shiva. Nevertheless, a similar indentation, resembling the right foot of the same identity, can be found on the Neduntheevu island. 3. The Wild Ponies And Their Secret Lives The Portuguese and the Dutch brought the wild ponies here. These feral ponies are the descendants of the European mares and Arabian stallions. They grew in numbers and were celebrated during the time of Lieutenant Nolan. He conducted a huge horse-breeding program. By the end of the British Era, most of these ponies were abandoned, and today they are a protected species of the island. So, you cannot take them outside the island. 4. The King Vedi Arasan Vedi Arasan, or the King of Firecrackers, was a celebrated Mukkuvar king here. He was the helm of the pearl trade in the Palk Strait. Furthermore, local stories suggest that the Dutch Fort was built on the foundation of the king’s ancient palace. 5. The Pigeon Cote Or The Dove Cote  The Pigeon Cote or the Dove Cote near the ruins of the Dutch Hospital is a witness to the colonial past of the island. It is 2 meters in length, and it shows how pigeons used to function as the physical internet connection. They were trained, and they used to fly between the Jaffna Mainland and the Delft Island. Though the pigeons were used to carry military dispatches, they were also used for the dissemination of personal letters. 6. The Massive Baobab Tree  The Baobab Tree is a telltale of how Arab traders enjoyed supremacy in this region. The hollow in the trunk of this ancient tree is large enough to accommodate two people.  Furthermore, prisoners were often kept inside the big hollow during transition.  What Are The Things To See In Delft Island, Jaffna? Delft Island may be small in size. However, its diverse cultural and historical attractions will keep you busy. However, these are the attractions you must not miss. The Portuguese And Dutch Fort  This fort is one of the most prominent attractions on Delft Island. It is a free place to visit. The Portuguese built this fort, and then the Dutch occupied it. Moreover, this fort has a coral and limestone structure. So, it stands out because of its unique architecture. The Baobab Tree  The Arab merchants brought the giant baobab tree in the 16th century. You suddenly feel that you are in Africa. The Old Dutch Hospital And Pigeon Nest  The Dutch built this hospital, and in the early 1900s, it became an administrative center. You can still see an inscription of the British Emblem on the Courts. Furthermore, the Pigeon cote or pigeon nest near the hospital shows how pigeons used to function as messengers between Jaffna Mainland and Delft Island. Where To Eat And Drink On The Delft Island? You can eat at the Delft Hotel near the jetty. You can eat parathas, rice, wade, and dosai. Also, you will find many local vendors selling snacks. However, you will not find a hotel on Delft Island. So, carry adequate snacks and water when traveling to Delft Island.
