I have just shared my story of climbing the Sigiriya Rock. It’s huge, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with the 660-foot stone remnants, is the perfect postcard of the cultural richness of Sri Lanka.  I visited the Hindu temples of Jaffna and experienced their grandeur. I have also experienced the somber vibe and wondered at the architectural marvel of the Ritigala Forest Monastery.  Now, if you think of the Pidurangala Rock, it is not the bucket-list material like the three places I have mentioned. I initially planned a hike of the Pidurangala Rock to have a different perspective of the Sigiriya Rock.  The view from the top is mesmerizing.  However, the Pidurangala Rock is not just the lesser-known neighbor of the Sigiriya Rock. It was an ancient Buddhist Monastery and is famous as the home to a 1500-year-old massive statue of Lord Buddha.  Also, watching the sunrise from the top of the Pidurangala Rock is an ethereal experience.  I hope you have guessed by now. In this blog, I will share my experience of climbing the Pidurangala Rock, watching the sunrise from there, its history, and other details.  The History Of The Pidurangala Rock The history of the Pidurangala Rock is over two millennia old. King Kashyapa made the Sigiriya Fort his seat of power and asked the monks to shift here. He made suitable arrangements to build amenities for the resident monks here.  In fact, the rock gets its name from "Pidu + Ran + Goda." It means the offered piles of gold. Thus, the name itself explains how King Kashyapa made donations for the development.  Furthermore, the Sigiri Pidurangala Raja Maha Viharaya temple is still inside the caves.  Also, the site has a 1500-year-old massive Buddha Statue in a reclining position. The treasure hunters ruined it partially in the 1960s. However, it has been restored.  Today, the Pidurangala Rock is a protected archaeological site containing ancient caves, a 5th-century stupa, and remains of a second stupa on the summit. How To Reach The Pidurangala Rock From Kandy? Hiking the Sigiriya Rock and Pidurangala Rock can be an extension of the mixed bag of things to do in Kandy.  The journey from Kandy to the Pidurangala Rock 1. The Long Haul From Kandy  You can catch a bus from the station behind the Kandy train station to Dambulla. This is a journey of 2 hours and 15 minutes.  Furthermore, the ticket will cost you around 1.14 USD or 200 LKR.  2. The Short Haul From Kandy  Once you reach Dambulla, you will get local buses to Sigiriya. The ticket price is around 40 LKR, and the travel time is just 30 minutes.  What Is The Entry Fee For Pidurangala Rock? While researching Sigiriya Rock, I was shocked to find that the entrance fee is $36 USD per person. a steep price tag considering how affordable the rest of Sri Lanka is.  Aside from our $35 USD Yala National Park safari, it was the only major expense I encountered during my entire month-long trip. In fact, my 5 days in Jaffna were quite a budget-friendly affair.  However, the Pidurangala Rock was a stark contrast. However, my heart was really pumping.  I climbed up a steep set of stairs, and that was an excellent morning workout for me.  Then, the trail ran into a scramble, and here, I found some large boulders.  You don’t need to use your rock climbing skills here. However, you will definitely need your friend’s hand to hoist yourself up.  Now, as I reached the top, I saw the long-awaited silhouette of the Sigiriya Rock. It looked magical against the backdrop of a golden morning sky.  The only complaint I had was the crowded main viewpoint. A local guide showed me a place that was around 20 feet down.  There was hardly a soul, and the view was unobstructed.  The Sunrise Mission On The Pidurangala Rock Hike the Pidurangala Rock before or during the sunrise to be a part of nature’s magic. See how colors form before your eyes.  Do not walk or hike at the site once the Sun is down, as the elephants are out then. I took a tuk-tuk before sunset to reach the base.  It cost me around 500 LKR.  The trail begins at the ancient Buddhist temple. So, you have to be respectful in your attire and demeanor.  How To Have The "Perfect" Sigiriya Day? If you are an adventurous soul, you can actually climb both the rocks in one day. You can see the sunrise at Pidurangala and be back at Hotel Sigiriya to catch some quick refreshment and relax.  Then, in the late afternoon, you hike the Sigiriya Rock for the best sunset experience.  Where To Eat And Sleep In Sigiriya? Sigiriya is small and spread out, so stay near the "center" (look for Pradeep Restaurant on the map). I loved Kalana Homestay. A cheap, friendly, and right in the mix. If you want luxury, Heritance Kandalama is an architectural masterpiece built into the cliffs further out. Moreover, Pradeep Restaurant and Shenadi are the two places where you will find the best meals.  What To Bring For A Hike To The Pidurrangala Rock? Since the hike begins near a Buddhist temple, women are asked to cover their shoulders and legs out of respect.  Because of the heat, a sarong is the perfect solution. You can stay cool and easily tuck it away once you’ve passed the temple grounds. Forgot to pack something modest? Don't worry, as the ticket office usually has scarves available to borrow.  Just make sure you’ve also packed sturdy shoes, insect repellent, and plenty of water to stay comfortable on the trail!

Just outside Colombo City, I found the Mount Lavinia Beach. I did not know that such a beautiful sea bathing spot was located so close to Colombo. It is swimmable and has the most amazing sunset views.  The beaches in Jaffna will be my silent favorite. However, I was happy to find this quaint place and met adorable sea turtles here.  Here is more about a day at Mount Lavinia Beach.  How I Reached The Mount Lavinia Beach?  The closest railway station to Mount Lavinia Beach is the Mount Lavinia Railway Station. I took a train from the Kollupitiya railway station, and the train ticket cost me around INR 10 or 30 LKR.  It was a train journey of 20 minutes, and as the train started getting closer to Mount Lavinia, I could smell the sea, and young men were all near the doors of the train carriage, enjoying the breeze and soaking in the vibe.  The Mount Lavinia Beach: A Day Well Spent By The Sea  It was late afternoon when I reached Mount Lavinia Beach. Everyone was playing cricket or rugby, and some young couples were taking selfies.  I joined the bunch playing cricket, and it was a lot of fun talking about Kumar Sangakkara and Sanath Jayasuriya, two Sri Lankan cricket icons. They were happy to know that I was from India, and we talked more about the cricket that we played.  After I played with them for one hour, they accompanied me for lunch at a special door. The place was indeed special, as I watched the trains pass with thunder and even could cross the tracks.  Meanwhile, the Sun was about to set, and I planned to have some beer and watch the sunset. The plastic chairs and tables were in dilapidated conditions, but I cherished my beer time.  As the sky turned blue from orange, and then purple and black, I patted my back for deciding to spend an afternoon at Mount Lavinia Beach.  Sea Turtles And Food At Mount Lavinia Beach  I visited the Sea Turtles Conservation Centre before hitting the beach, and the food I had here deserves a special mention.  Here is more about the highlights of my Mount Lavinia Beach experience.  1. Sea Turtles Conservation Centre, Colombo  Ticket Price: INR 180 The Sea Turtles Conservation Centre was the first place I visited after getting off at the Mount Lavinia station.  I walked through makeshift shacks and beach houses between the Mount Lavinia Railway track and the beach to reach the Sea Turtles Conservation Centre.  It is a small beachside rescue center that buys turtle eggs from locals and raises them. It is an attempt to stop the selling of tortoise eggs or tortoise meat as food.  Furthermore, it is a place where injured turtles are nursed, and their health is restored. I saw adorable Albino Loggerheads, tiger turtles, and leatherbacks here.  Also, I was elated seeing the tank where tiny, 1-week-old baby turtles were swimming. I am a tactile person, and the best thing was that they allowed me to hold the turtles.  They also explained the volunteering opportunities here and how the entire preservation project is managed.  Overall, it was a fulfilling experience. 2. The Galkissa Beach My experience in Sri Lanka began with a trip to Jaffna. I have also hiked the Ritigala Forest Monastery and Trincomalee.  By now, I must have been aware of how Google Maps can be deceiving in Sri Lanka. However, overjoyed with the turtle experience, I did not notice that I had walked in the wrong direction from the railway station.  I could sense the mistake when I could see a stretch of sand with fishing nets lying before me. There were no bars or restaurants as I had seen in the images of the Mount Lavinia Beach.  People were playing with kites and swimming there.  I waited there for five minutes. Oh, the introvert in me really becomes unbearable sometimes.  Nevertheless, I tried to be at the best of my best social skills and asked a local about the place. He told me that it was the Galkissa Beach.  I took some photos of the place and then started walking toward Mount Lavinia Beach.  3. Food On The Mount Lavinia Beach Finally, I reached the Mount Lavinia Beach, and it was exactly like the photos I had seen of it. I was at the beach around July, and the waves were quite strong.  So, people were more into paddling than swimming. Also, after playing some cricket, as I have mentioned, my stomach was rumbling, and thanks to the guys I was playing cricket with, I got to grab a place at a bar cum restaurant.  I ordered some seafood fried rice and prawn curry with chilled Lion beers.  Food was good and spicy, and with occasions sweats! Though the food here was not as spicy as the food in Jaffna.  After finishing my lunch, I decided to go for another stroll along the beach and watch the sunset. Finally, it was time to bid goodbye to the waters and take a train to the Kollupitiya railway station.  Mount Lavinia Beach: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) Here are the frequently asked questions and answers about the Mount Lavinia Beach.  1. Also, weather conditions can change anytime. So, check the local safety flags and listen to the advice of the lifeguards before getting into the water.  3. What Is The Mount Lavinia Beach To Colombo Airport Distance? The distance between Mount Lavinia Beach and Colombo is around 44 km. The travel time via the Colombo - Katunayake Expressway is around 1 hour and 5 minutes. The best option is to take an airport transfer from the Colombo Airport.

Approximately forty minutes from Amsterdam, the Tulip Spell in Holland is the best to visit in April.   You can take a ride on the whisper boat cruises in the garden or enjoy a fun-filled picnic.   3. The Silver Forest Aspen in Colorado:  The Rocky Mountain area of Aspen draws people from around the globe to see the beguiling Silver Forest that comprises silver birch trees, termed shade-intolerant species. These trees require brim sunlight without competition for food, space, and sunlight.   The trees are the highlight of the autumn spell, with golden and silvery colors strewn around the forest. The Waitomo Glow Worm Caves, New Zealand:  The Waitomo Caves attraction is best known for its massive population of glowworm species. This species of worm is found particularly in New Zealand. They’re around the size of an average mosquito and glow in the dark. Shifen Waterfall, Taiwan:  A scenic waterfall situated in Pingxi District, Taipei City in Taiwan, is the most majestic waterfall in Taiwan. This phenomenon emanates from Sueda – seaweed.   The beach is in the reed marsh and is the biggest wetland in the world, hosting the complete ecosystem ever found. The beach has become a habitat for over 250 species of birds and 399 species of wild animals.   The area is also known as the home of cranes since you can find Black Beaked Gulls and the Endangered Cranes”. Panjin Red Beach is one of those destinations that are hard to believe exist!  9. Kauai, Hawaii:  Kauai Island is in the mid-Pacific region of the Hawaiian archipelago. It has the nickname of “Garden Isle” due to the tropical rainforest surrounding much of its area.   The dramatic pinnacles, together with the cliffs of its Na Pali, have served as a backdrop for Hollywood films, while the 10-mile Waimea Canyon, together with the Nounou Trails cutting across the Giant Ridge, are wandering destinations. However, the most attractive destination is Kauai Falls, which resembles a silky stream of water gliding down to a fascinating array!  10. A scenic view of what looks like a carpeted hill is a mesmerizing view you can experience once in a lifetime.  From here, you can visit the St. Barbara's chapel. Start your day early if you want to visit the Rolling Hills, as the area looks the best in Sunlight.   11. National Park, Utah:  You can forge new memories at the fiery red rock while embracing your most adventurous part of Utah’s national park, depending on whether such side likes exploring new terrain on short nature hikes, pedaling canyon rims, or navigating slot canyons.   Utah’s national park features the most amazing landscapes in the globe. Golden arches cover the region with a spectacular view you cannot afford to miss.  Bon Voyage!  While visiting the places of adventure in the world, you must be particular about your travel essentials. Your travel itinerary will include a lot of outdoor activities. So, you must choose your travel gear, boots, and outfits correctly. In addition, you have to carry essential medicines and protein bars.  However, the trick here is to only carry the things you need and keep your bag light. You even need to choose your backpack or duffle bag that can fulfill your traveling needs.
