Guest speakers from Dark Ranger Telescope and NASA attended the “Astrofest Festival” at Badlands National Park this year (July 5 to 7, 2024). In this celebration of the night sky and astronomy, the guest speakers discussed various aspects of space. The 2024 fest included the following activities. Scale model of the solar system in the afternoon An early evening solar viewing program Guest speaker session “These are objects that have been important to our culture since we could probably talk. So, we think it’s important to maintain that connection and bring back that connection to these things that used to be so important to us for thousands of years.”Ed Welsh, the education specialist at Badlands National Park  The yearly Astrofest Festival at the park indeed has a role in making the park a favorite for star gazing and exploring the night sky. However, if you are an introvert and always seek an immersive experience like me, night sky viewing will be your favorite activity at the park.  In fact, I feel that watching the night sky is the chef’s kiss in the park tour. The stargazing activity takes place near the park’s Cedar Pass area, which is close to the visitor center.  Further, the rangers inform you about the celestial bodies you will see. The Space Tourism Guide features the Badlands National Park and the Badlands National Park Observatory as some of the best places for stargazing in South Dakota.Badlands Observatory became accessible to visitors in May 2021. It is a privately owned facility in the Badlands National Park. Also, it works for astronomical education and research.  Cedar Pass Campground Amphitheater Between Memorial Day and Labor Day, the Cedar Pass Campground Amphitheater has a Night Sky Viewing event every day. However, two of the best spots along the loop are: Burns Basin Overlook Yellow Munds Overlook These locations are especially great for taking photographs and indulging in tranquility.  Sage Creek Rim Road The Sage Creek Rim Road is one of the least crowded spaces in the park. You will also get to see very few cars passing through the area.  The Sage Creek Basin Overlook and Hay Butte Overlook are some of the best spots for stargazing on Sage Creek Rim Road. However, as very few people visit this area, you can find a stargazing spot of your own.  Big Badlands Overlook Big Badlands Overlook may appear last on my list of places to stargaze in Badlands National Park. However, it is the first overlook for someone accessing the park from the Northeast Entrance or the Sioux Falls.  Take a short walk and reach the best stargazing point in the Big Badlands Overlook. From here, enjoy a 360-degree view.  The Backcountry  The open backcountry of the Badlands National Park is a wonderland for camping and stargazing. So, just set your camp and enjoy stargazing for the entire night.  Watching Sunrise And Sunset At Badlands National Park The magic hours of Sunrise and Sunset paint the Badlands National Park with the most vibrant shade of red. This trip through South Dakota will take you around 4 hours. If you want to have the best stargazing experience at Badlands, you need to stay there overnight. You can reserve a room at the Cedar Pass Lodge in advance or stay at the Sage Creek Campground or Cedar Pass Campground.  However, if you are an adventurous soul and want the most immersive experience, put a camp in the backcountry or the north and south units of the park. For the longest time, Air Canada and WestJet have been dominating the Canadian airline industry, which has led to the prevalence of high airfare. However, with the emergence of new contenders, things are finally changing. Flair Airlines is one such competitor of the legacy airlines that have a strong hold on the Canadian Airline industry. It is a low-cost carrier that has been expanding its operations during the pandemic to include U.S. travel hotspots like Arizona, Florida, California, and Nevada, continuing to operate on an extensive Canadian route network that covers most major cities in the country. Here is my brief take on the Flair Airlines experience I had. Keep reading because this is going to be very useful. My Experience Of Flair Airlines Image Source: assets.bwbx.io Here is a first-hand experience or a Flair Airlines review of the recent travel I had flying from Toronto to Montreal. Read on to know if it was worth it. Booking Image Source: thepointsguy.global.ssl.fastly.net I booked my flight on Google Flights, searching for the cheapest flight from Toronto to Montreal. On my date of flight, both Flair and Air Canada had early morning flights, and yet Flair was priced at half of the Air Canada ticket. There was, of course, the added benefit of a full-size carry-on bag but even on a standard fee, Air Canada would be charging for seat selection. Flair is a solid selection if you are traveling light, even if it includes seat selection. The Flair Airlines baggage policy is a little icky if you are traveling heavy instead. A one-way flight on December 15 via Flair costs 40. Whereas WestJet’s and Air Canada’s cheapest flights are $135. I had to pay a minimum of $7.90 for seat selection. All of Flair’s Toronto flights depart from Terminal 3, so that is where I did my check-in. Flair has a few baggage drops and check-in counters located in the center of the terminal. The airport was mostly empty, given the wee hours we were departing (7:30 a.m.) There were some shops open despite the timings, so I got a coffee and yogurt from Starbucks and sat away from the crowd for some uninterrupted breakfast. Flair does not have its own lounges. Cabins And Seats Image Source: thepointsguy.global.ssl.fastly.net The flight was one of Flair’s three 737-800 (read tiny) aircraft. The airline operates with economy-only cabins suited for its ultra-low-cost carrier. The interiors were nondescript and spotless. It is simply designed without any frills like over or seatback displays. The flight was made with the intention of taking a passenger from point A to point B. The seats were comfy enough at the cost I paid. They did not recline, but they were not as slim as other similar carriers in the U.S. The extra padding on the seats helped ease the other small space. The leg room was commendably larger than its other similarly ranged carriers. It also had a full-size tray that could easily fit a 16-inch Macbook Pro. Spirit Airlines offers only a small drink tray. Keeping that in mind, have your devices on a full charge and make sure to get a window seat to keep yourself entertained for these otherwise short flights. The food and beverage services could get you to pay $2.75 for a soda and $5.50 for a Molson beer. A coffee would cost $2.35. All that after currency conversion. The airline’s internet service is also set to launch soon so that too can be an attraction for travelers. Flair’s rapid expansion is on its way to breaking through the expensive air carrier industry with its budget-friendly approach. Furthermore, with a thriving nightlife scene, this place is perfect if you can stay here.   Henceforth, visiting museums and other important places becomes easier. Let's not forget that you can hop to clubs and restaurants regularly if you stay close!   Santurce – One of the most populated areas of San Juan, this location is quite safe for you to book your accommodation here. Starting from museums, and art and music, you will get everything here. Admittedly, you will also enjoy the different types of cuisines available in this locality.   Things to Do in San Juan   If you want to enjoy visiting San Juan safely, let me share with you some of the coolest places that are worth visiting. History speaks here along with offering you some of the most picturesque places across the city.   Starting from the beaches to the streets, San Juan offers you beautiful places to explore. Let me share some of the things to do in San Juan, Puerto Rico for free! These activities will make sure you have the time of your life!   El Yunque National Forest   This place is beautiful, especially if you are a natural person, this is it for you. La Fortaleza   A UNESCO World Heritage Site, La Fortaleza is a historic fortress. You can take a guided tour of this place. You can see the current residence of the Governor-General of Puerto Rico, there is also an arsenal here.   Furthermore, you cannot roam around the fortress at your own will, instead try to book the 30-minute guided walking tours across the place from Monday to Friday from 8:15 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The tour is inclusive of the interiors of the fortress when the government is not in session and the luscious gardens.   Santa Maria Magdalena de Pazzis Cemetery   The cemetery is historically profound especially because it is filled with graves of significant Puerto Rican figures. Salvador Brau, Jose Ferrer, Rafael Hernandez, Jose de Diego, and others are all buried here.   You will find them one of the most beautiful places as the cemetery faces the Atlantic Ocean. It is all about the symbolization of the journey of the souls in their afterlife!   Food to Have in San Juan   Are you a foodie like me? Whenever I travel somewhere, what I find very necessary is to try the food that the locals enjoy. This shows how the way a place develops a relationship with the local food, the people, and the culture there.   La Placita de Santurce – With several bars and food stalls, this place is as lively as a festival, the market square attracts you like no other. One of the hotspots of Puerto Rico, both travelers and locals are attracted to this place.   La Factoria – This bar is popular and known for its creative cocktails such as espresso martini, lavender mule and lager beer, hijos de Borinquen, and others! A low-lit salsa-filled ambiance is quite homely with their delicious fish tacos, stuffed mushrooms, fried goat cheese balls, and others.    Chicharron - One of the most delicious tapas menus, this restaurant is one of the best places to taste the Puerto Rican malanga soup. Let's not forget to try the Mofongo from here.   Deaverdura - A small restaurant, giving a farm eatery vibe offers you some of the best pernil in San Juan. You also need to try the pollo al ajillo with rice, which is to die for. It is located right in the heart of the city; the lively Latin American restaurant gives you the perfect taste of local cuisine.   Molini’s - A hidden gem of a restaurant, the menu keeps changing every day offering you some of the best local cuisines. If you are looking for an authentic Puerto Rican dish, try their Arroz con gandules. You are in for a treat!   Safety Tips for Solo Women Traveler   The safety tips that I am sharing with you are from my experience as a solo female traveler! My experiences have helped me create a checklist for myself especially when I am traveling alone, both domestically and internationally.   Select your accommodation area in a well-lit neighborhood. This will ensure your safety even when you are returning late to your hotel or leaving early to visit a tourist place. Another thing to keep in mind, if you are walking alone, try to be on proper-lit roads, especially at night.   It is important to be aware of your surroundings at all times, even when in a crowd. I recently traveled to a crowded city in India, and I realized, that pickpockets and petty theft are most rampant in crowds. Even at night, you must be aware of your surroundings.   When using transportation, use reputable and trusted individual drivers and organizations for ride-sharing services, organized tours, and taxis.   Try not to flaunt too much in terms of clothing or accessories. For example, it is better if you do not wear expensive watches, expensive bags, jewelry, and large amounts of cash.   You must keep track of the weather in San Juan and check the forecast before you make the plans. It is better to be prepared especially because you are a visitor to the city hence, you might not get help whenever you need it. Better take precautions instead of worrying about what will happen later.   Wrapping Up!   In conclusion, when you visit San Juan, you must enjoy the beautiful places, enjoy the local Puerto Rican dishes, and experience their culture.
