The charm of Edinburgh grows on you. I know that I am not the only one who felt like moving to the Scottish Capital after the first visit.   So, even though Edinburgh happened to me many moons ago, I can vividly remember its moody weather and the beautiful architecture. More than anything, the cityscape stays with me.   Also, if you are a “bucket-list” kind of traveler, the city harbors endless attractions. And this guide here is about the things to do in Edinburgh.   What Are The Things To Do In Edinburgh?   From visiting the beautiful Dean Village to exploring the majestic Edinburgh Castle, you cannot match the experience of the Scottish capital with anywhere else.   These are my favorite things to do in Edinburgh.  1. Visiting The Dean Village   Dean Village reminded me of the village of Belle from Beauty and the Beast. I took a short walk from Stockbridge to reach Dean Village.   Furthermore, I just grabbed my coffee and roamed aimlessly. This is how you discover the best wonders and keep your plan spontaneous.   2. Strolling Down The Circus Lane   I discovered the Circus Lane while strolling along the Dean Village and beyond. The Circus Lane is just five minutes away from Dean Village.   Every minute in the street is Instagrammable.  3. Living The Dark Academia Moment At New College  The dark academia fan in me was very happy visiting the New College. I stepped into the courtyard and saw a ballroom scene becoming alive before my eyes.   4. Exploring The Edinburgh Castle  On top of Castle Rock, the castle is the crown jewel in the history of Edinburgh. Also, from the castle, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the surroundings.  5. Wandering Along The Royal Mile   The Royal Mile is also one of the historical palaces to see in Edinburgh. It is a thoroughfare, and it is a link between the Palace of Holyroodhouse and Edinburgh Castle.   You will find many eateries, shops, and landmarks here.   6. Hiking To The Top Of Arthur’s Seat  This is a hike to reach the top of an ancient volcano. The hike is rewarding, and after reaching the top, I loved the vistas of the entire city.   It’s a must if you are in Edinburgh.  7. Enjoying The View Of The Edinburgh Castle From Vennel Viewpoint  You can enjoy a different perspective of the Edinburgh Castle from the Vennel Viewpoint. The surroundings are beautiful in all seasons.   However, it is something different in autumn.   8. Exploring The Harry Potter Shops On Victoria Street   Now, everyone knows that Victoria Street is the inspiration behind the famous Diagon Alley in Harry Potter.   No wonder that the street today has many Harry Potter-themed shops. So, it was a mix of walking down the historical moments and a Potterhead moment.   9. Living The Willy Wonka Moment At The Chocolatarium  The Chocolatarium, close to the Royal Mile, offers a 90-minute guided tour called The Tour of Chocolate.   You will get to taste more than 40 flavors of chocolates here, and you can make your own chocolate bar and take it home.   Furthermore, during the weekends, The Chocolatarium also offers Chocolate and Wine and Chocolate and Whiskey pairings.   10. Enjoying Views From The Top Of Camera Obscura  Camera Obscura has various exhibits and displays. However, to find Camera Obscura, you will have to reach the top of the building.   This old telescope from 1835 is the oldest CCTV in the city. Through this, you can enjoy a view of the city down to the waterfront as it was back then.  11. Visiting The Grave Of Tom Riddle At Greyfriars Kirkyard  Near the Royal Mile, Greyfriars Kirkyard is an iconic place to visit in Edinburgh. Here, you will find the graveyard of McGonagall and Tom Riddle.   12. Taking A Stroll Up To Calton Hill  Calton Hill is home to various iconic moments of Edinburgh. Furthermore, I loved it more for its sunrise and sunset views.   13. Visiting The Museums Of Edinburgh   Edinburgh has some of the most prominent and comprehensive museums in the United Kingdom.   These are the museums you can explore in Edinburgh.   National Museum Of Scotland   You will get to know about Scottish history, technology, science, world cultures, and the natural world at the National Museum of Scotland.   The important exhibits here are Dolly the Sheep, which was the first cloned mammal, the Lewis Chessmen, and the dramatic architecture of the Grand Gallery.   You need at least 3 hours to explore this museum.   The Museum Of Edinburgh  It is home to the National Covenant, one of the most important documents in the history of Scotland.   Furthermore, you will find many historic artifacts related to the city in the museum.   Writers’ Museum  This is again a dream spot for dark academia fans. The unique setup and museum celebrate the likes of Robert Louis Stevenson, Sir Walter Scott, and Robert Burns.   Along with rare books, you will also find personal objects used by the prominent literary figures and paintings.   Moreover, the museum offers free entry.   Scottish National Portrait Gallery  Visiting the iconic Scottish National Portrait Gallery is one of the best free things to do in Edinburgh.   Here, you will enjoy a journey through the history of Edinburgh with the photographs, sculptures, paintings, and movies.  Surgeons’ Hall Museums  It is one of the most prominent and fast surgical museums in the world. Here, you will get to know about the evolution of surgery and medicine.   You will also come across the surgical instruments from the 19th century and many preserved specimens. 14. Buying Secondhand Books At Armchair Books  It is a paradise for book lovers. You will get books from the 1800s and different centuries at this shop.   So, you don’t just buy books from here; you carry a little moment of history home.   15. A Fun Johnnie Walker Whiskey Tour  1820 Rooftop Bar at Johnnie Walker is a great place to enjoy your drink and have the views of Edinburgh Castle.   Furthermore, I loved the Johnnie Walker tour, learning about the history of this iconic drink.   Along with the 1820 Rooftop Bar, these are the bars you can explore in Edinburgh.  Other Bars In Edinburgh Why Famous Bramble Bar & Lounge One of the best bars in the UK Serves amazing, crafted drinks Hey Palu Serves the best classic Negronis Chaophraya Edinburgh Great Food Amazing views of Edinburgh Castle from the rooftop The Alchemist Theatrical Cocktails Wee Vault Amazing craft beers and meads The Royal Oak A Folk Music Pub Nauticus Bar Serves local spirits   Where To Eat In Edinburgh?   The Witchery,  The Pantry, and Taco Libre are my favorite spots to eat in Edinburgh.   The Witchery has two dining halls, the Witchery itself and the Secret Garden, which is the main one. Despite being a celebrated place, the food here is quite reasonable. It’s around £30 for two people.   We chose The Pantry as your brunch stop. It is close to the Circus Lane and Dean Village. I loved the coffee there.   Moreover, at the end of Princes Street, Taco Libre is a casual place to appease your sudden hunger pangs. The tacos are great, but try the Margaritas once!   Where To Stay In Edinburgh?   The House of Gods and the Royal Mile at The Witchery are some of the most interesting places to stay in Edinburgh.   The House of Gods offers a wild experience. On the other hand, the Royal Mile at The Witchery has the quintessential Gothic romance vibe. In the heart of the historic town of Edinburgh, the experience here feels out of this world.   What Is The Best Time To Visit Edinburgh?   Autumn is the best time to visit Edinburgh. Mauritius! I had the amazing experience of going to this island country recently, and let me tell you, it was an experience of a lifetime. Initially, I was confused about which time to plan it out for. The temperatures and weather in Mauritius are at odds with the rest of the world because of its position in the middle of the ocean. But, when I got there, lucky as I was, I had arrived just before peak season. I got to know about their culture, their food, and most importantly, the best time to visit Mauritius. Here I will describe to you what Mauritius has to offer in each of the months of the year. If you want to know about Mauritanian weather the year around, make sure to stick it out to the end. Plan your trip then on, accordingly. The Best Time To Visit Mauritius Image Source: images.news18.com Mauritius is known for its sunny beaches and beautiful nature treasures. I am here to give you a season-by-season breakdown of the island. Keep reading! January To March Image Source: www.lexpressproperty.com In Mauritius, January is considered one of the hottest and wettest months of the year. Despite the high rainfall, the island is still quite busy due to the influx of tourists from the Christmas period. You can expect heavy rainfall during late afternoons, and there is a possibility of torrential storms during this month. Similarly, February is also quite hot, humid, and rainy in Mauritius. However, the rain usually doesn't last long and clears up after a few hours. Though not perfect for a beach vacation, February has fewer crowds than January. May is officially the start of winter in Mauritius, but the temperature remains comfortable, and the humidity drops. I would recommend you stay on the west or north coast during August as these areas provide more shelter from the wind. This month marks the Ganesh Chaturthi Festival, a festival honoring the God Ganesh, and you can see statues of the Elephant God all around the island during the celebration. September is considered the unofficial beginning of peak season in Mauritius. At this time, the strong trade winds start to die down, and the temperatures rise, ushering in the summer months and longer days of sunshine. The beautiful beaches and great food!   All these things are common in the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico.   So, when there is a Puerto Rico vs Dominican Republic comparison, it’s really difficult to pick a favorite. Both Spanish cities, with their signature rum and tropical rainforest,s are ready to win over you.   Still, here is a comparison you need to read before you pick Puerto Rico or the Dominican Republic as your favorite.   Puerto Rico Vs Dominican Republic Weather: When Is The Best Time To Visit?   Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic have similar tropical weather conditions. December to April is the ideal time for visiting these islands, as it is the dry season.   The daytime temperatures range between 70 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit in these months. However, these balmy and dry conditions are very much a part of the appeal of these places.   Moreover, if you are okay with a little humidity, you can plan a visit in September or November.   Puerto Rico Vs Dominican Republic: History   The discovery of these islands by Columbus happened almost at the same time. The Dominicans are the masters of bachata or merengue. On the other hand, Puerto Rico is home to bomba or Salasa. Though these music and dance forms are very much African, there is a difference that the connoisseurs can notice. However, they offer similar yet different experiences in exploring the wildlife, beaches, and spotting the marine life. 1. Puerto Rico Vs Dominican Republic: Nature And Wildlife Experience Tropical forest, swimming holes, and birds are the main highlights of the nature and wildlife experience in Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic. It is home to bata, lizards, tropical birds, and many endemic plants and animals.  Furthermore, Monkeyland is a reserve for squirrel monkeys. Also, the Manatee Reserve is the place to paddleboard and spot the sea cows.  Want some more adventure? You can explore the Isabel de Torres National Park. Here, you will find the only cable car in the Caribbean. It will take you around 2625 feet above sea level.  Enjoy the views of the Atlantic waves, the rainforest, and Puerto Plata while ziplining.  Also, you can take your journey forward from here. Walk through the dense forest and pass deep canyons, deep rainforest to find waterfalls such as the Damajagua Waterfall. In addition, you will find swimming holes, lagoons, and rock chutes functioning as natural slides. 2. Puerto Rico Vs Dominican Republic Beaches Here, the difference is visible among the beaches. The beaches in the Dominican Republic have white sand.  On the other hand, the beaches in Puerto Rico have golden or black sand. Playa Dorada is located on the northern coast of the Dominican Republic, where the Atlantic Ocean waves create a rougher experience than the beaches further south. The gentle, light-golden sand has palm trees, and kite-surfers are enjoying themselves in the water.  For a more unique experience, head to Cayo Arena, often referred to as “Cayo Paraíso” for clear reasons. The vibrant corals, plentiful sea creatures, and diverse underwater marvels draw numerous divers and snorkelers.  In Puerto Rico, it’s not necessary to travel far from San Juan to discover great beaches. Escambrón Marine Park is just ten minutes from downtown and is favored by surfers as one of the top spots for beginner-friendly waves on the island.  Right by the Puente de Hermanos is Playita del Condado, a beautiful city beach in Puerto Rico. It is located in a small cove, creating a beautiful combination with the expansive Condado Beach.  In just another ten minutes, you will arrive at the stunning Isla Verde Beach. The golden sands are sheltered by towering palm trees, with numerous restaurants, bars, and shops in close proximity.  Surfers should also check out the appropriately named Surfer’s Beach in Aguadilla. A top surfing spot in Puerto Rico is located on the north side, featuring a beautiful point break, particularly during winter.  3. Whale Watching In Puerto Rico Vs Dominican Republic  Observing whales is an excellent experience for all tourists in the Dominican Republic. Thousands of humpback whales travel into nearby waters each year from December to March.  The finest way to observe these incredible creatures is through boat tours departing from Puerto Plata. Around 300 whales have been observed simultaneously in Samaná Bay, while Silver Banks is also a key location.  Puerto Rico isn't widely recognized for whales, yet the resort town of Rincon, located on the west coast, is the focal point for them. From the historic El Faro Lighthouse, you might spot whales from the shore.  Culinary Experiences: Food And Drink In Puerto Rico And Dominican Republic  The unofficial national dish of Puerto Rico is arroz con pollo, meaning "chicken with rice." It has a Moorish Spain origin, which in turn connects further back to pilaf from Asia.  In the Dominican Republic, the national meal known as La Bandera showcases the hues of the country's flag. Drawing from Spanish culinary traditions, it consists of white rice, red beans, and meat, usually chicken or beef.  Indeed, the food of the two nations is alike, with a significant distinction being the Dominican inclination towards meat, while Puerto Ricans prefer seafood. Nevertheless, they both have a fondness for plantains.  Street food plays a significant role in everyday life in both nations. Puerto Rico is famous for its food trucks, and its culinary landscape has produced numerous celebrity chefs.  1. Empanadillas  The Dominican Republic has food stalls that offer popular snacks like chicharrón (pork crackling).   If that doesn't suit your preference, consider trying the empanadas and yaroas, a high-calorie mix of fries, root veggies, meat, cheese, and toppings.  Like on several Caribbean islands, tropical fruits are always available. Refreshing delights include fresh juices and shakes crafted from fruits like mango, papaya, passionfruit, pineapple, or guava.  2. Morir Soñando  In the Dominican Republic, be sure to sample morir soñando, a special blend of milk, orange juice, and ice. Its name translates to “to die dreaming,” possibly reflecting how divine it tastes.  The beverage is so delicious that it has reached Puerto Rico, where it is enhanced with additional flavors like vanilla. Choosing the best option, such as between Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic, simply signifies the joy of experiencing both.  3. Rum  Numerous books have been authored regarding the significance of rum in the Caribbean. Puerto Rico is currently closely linked to the Bacardi brand, whereas the Dominican Republic is recognized for Barceló and Brugal.  Bacardi relocated to Puerto Rico from Cuba following the 1960s Revolution, bringing along its renowned light rum recipe and its yeast, too. It currently produces approximately 70 percent of the rum from the Caribbean sold in the United States.  You can visit the Bacardi Distillery and observe how rum is produced. You can also discover how to blend the ideal mojito or piña colada drinks while acquiring some bartending skills.  Brugal was established in 1888, but the true commercial legacy of Dominican rum begins in the 1920s. It was then that the Barceló family began making their own rum in the Spanish style.  Currently recognized as Ron Barceló, their business has expanded into one of the largest rum exporters globally. Brugal and Barceló provide distillery tours, with Brugal being the most accessible option in Puerto Plata.  These islands are famous for their light rum in the Spanish style, which is matured in oak barrels to enhance its aromatic flavor. Light rum is ideal for Caribbean cocktails, but there are many darker options available if you enjoy drinking it straight or mixed with cola in a Cuba Libre.
