Does Tennessee have a beach? No, it does not.  For the longest time, I have been planning a long beach holiday. And something or else will always turn up ruining the plan.  The kids have their exams and there are family commitments. So, our beach vacation was always limited to Douglas Lake or Cherokee Lake.  However, I had done my research on the closest beach to me and this time, we had a long weekend.  So our road led to Sullivan’s Island, the closest beach to Knoxville, TN. Having said that, there are many beaches near Knoxville TN.  For example, Myrtle Beach in South Carolina is one of the most popular ocean beaches near Tennessee. We also have Folly Beach in South Carolina and Oak Island in North Carolina.  In today’s Tour and Travel blog, we will talk about the beaches close to Knoxville TN, and tell you why they are most suitable for the ultimate Tennessee beach vacation. What Is The Closest Beach To Knoxville Tennessee?  Our journey to the closest beaches to Knoxville TN will start from Sullivan’s Island, as promised.  However, before taking you on a tour of these beaches, I wanted to share the best time to visit the closest beach from Knoxville TN.  Knoxville primarily has two tourist seasons. You can visit the closest beach to Knoxville, TN between March and June and September to November.  So, let’s begin the ultimate Knoxville beach journey. Here we go!  1. Sullivan’s Island, South Carolina Distance from Knoxville: 380.4 Miles Travel Time: 6 Hours I was looking for ocean beaches within 6 hours of me, and I found out Sullivan’s Island. It is a barrier island with an area of around 8.91 km².  Further, Sullivan’s Island, the closest beach to TN, stands out with its local history. It has Fort Moultrie, built in 1776 and it still tells the story of how it protected the city from the cannonball attacks of the warships.  Moreover, Sullivan’s Island is important in the history of literature. Edgar Allan Poe was stationed at Fort Moultrie between November 1827 to December 1828. 2. Myrtle Beach, South Carolina Distance from Knoxville: 412 Miles Travel Time: 6 Hours 46 Minutes Sitting in Knoxville, I was looking for beaches within 7 hours of me. I found the name of Myrtle Beach in South Carolina.  Myrtle Beach is nothing short of a fantasy island and it was once the hub of pirates. Further, Myrtle Beach is associated with the Indigenous people and roaming ghosts.  A visit to Myrtle Beach is incomplete without exploring the Ripley’s Aquarium of Myrtle Beach. Further, you must spend some time at the Myrtle Beach State Park, and Myrtle Beach Pinball Museum.  3. Folly Beach, South Carolina Distance from Knoxville: 383 Miles Travel Time: 6 Hours 35 Minutes  Folly Beach, one of the closest beaches to Knoxville, is the ultimate destination to stay, eat, play. and explore!  Further, life on Folly Beach revolves around outdoor activities. From a casual stroll on the beach to more adventurous activities like surfing, boating, kayaking, and biking, Folly Beach offers you the opportunity to enjoy the best beach vacation.  Moreover, Folly Beach is a wonderful melting pot of modern entertainment and exploring wildlife. You can attend the Annual Folly Festivals and take part in birdwatching and exploring wildlife.  Blu Restaurant And Bar, Bert's Market, and Bounty Bar are some popular places to eat on Folly Beach.  4. Kiawah Island, South Carolina Distance from Knoxville: 396.5 Miles Travel Time: 6 Hours 30 Minutes Kiawah Island with a majority of marshland, is located at a distance of 6 hours and 16 minutes by car from Knoxville.  To emphasize the adventure, let me tell you that the beach is often used for native wildlife watching! Several locations across the beach are perfect if you are looking for wildlife spotting! The two locations popular for this purpose on the beach are Canvasback Duck Pond and Marsh Island Park. What’s more, there are two scenic observation towers in Kiawah where you will get a 360-degree view of the sea and land!  If you are a hiker or like to bike, this beach is perfect! They have natural paths for these types of adventures. For accommodation, there is a private 2nd story deck that you can rent to enjoy some stunning ocean views.  There is one popular restaurant called Jasmine Porch where you can splurge on good food, especially the Low-country favorites such as shrimp and grits, she-crab bisque, fresh seafood, po’boys, and burgers! 5. Isle Of Palms, South Carolina Distance from Knoxville: 383 Miles Travel Time: 6 Hours 30 Minutes There is a playground for children, so this is the perfect destination if you have kids.  There is also a picnic area, so if you plan to spend the whole day out, you can go to this beach. For accommodation, there is a single-family cottage which is well decorated! Food is another important part of the vacation, so I suggest the Sea Biscuit Cafe! Try out the seafood omelets, shrimp, and gravy because these are the low-country options. 6. Hilton Head, South Carolina Distance from Knoxville: 411 Miles Travel Time: 6 Hours 32 Minutes You have to visit this beach for the best sunsets across the water! In a distance of 6 hours, 26 minutes from Knoxville, the coastal paradise is someplace to be visited.  If you are planning on staying the night, there is a resort rental that you can book. You can enjoy the outdoor and indoor pool, a tiki bar, etc. You must catch the coastal area food, especially crab cakes, sandwiches, shrimp, grits, and salads.  7. Oak Island, North Carolina Distance from Knoxville: 441.5 Miles Travel Time: 7 Hours 14 Minutes If you are looking for a scenic beach, Oak Island is the place to visit for all adventurous activities.  Water sports are quite famous here, along with that, you can see Fort Caswell, used in the 1800s and 1900s. This is one of the beaches near Knoxville TN! You will take 7 hours and 8 minutes to reach the beach and can visit the island lighthouse, which is situated just beside the fort.  There is a perfect walk to enjoy Oak Island Nature Center at the beach, so if you are a nature lover, you know where to go! Further, adventures such as kayaking are the thing to do as an outdoor adventure sport. Many family homes and rentals are at a distance of the March beach, providing incredible views across the beach. Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina Distance from Knoxville: 442 Miles The beach is a little farther from Knoxville, TN, as it takes about 7 hours and 23 minutes.  There are three beaches in Wilmington: Kure, Carolina, and Wrightsville. All the beaches qualify as some of the best beaches near Knoxville. Apart from common activities such as shopping and dining, there are interesting activities to perform, such as going on catamaran cruises, visiting the History Museum, and attending fairs and seasonal festivals. The Fred and Alice Stanback Coastal Education Center organizes educational programs and treasure hunts for children.  IIn terms of food, you will find some of the best cheeseburgers at this closest beach to Knoxville, TN! If you are a picky eater, you will find various options, from steaks to seafood platters. 9. Kure Beach, North Carolina, Closest Beach To Knoxville, TN Distance from Knoxville: 449.5 Miles Travel Time: 7 Hours 30 Minutes The beach at Kure is beautiful, apart from the North Carolina Aquarium, which is situated at Fort Fisher.  Significant features are located at the beach, such as a nature play area, an adventure reef, and touch tanks. This beach is located at a distance of 7 hours and 31 minutes.  Apart from the beach, you can also visit places such as the historical site of the Civil War Museum, the Fort Fisher State Site, beach cruises, a dog park, and a playground in front of the beach. You cannot miss the food such as burgers, sandwiches, seafood and pasta! I am already drooling! 10. Tybee Island, Georgia: Closest Beach To Knoxville, TN Distance from Knoxville: 434 Miles Travel Time: 7 Hours The beach is located at a distance of 6 hours and 55 minutes by road from Knoxville. Some of the place’s main attractions are the restaurants and the quaint little shops.  The beach is popular for people finding their relaxing haunt near Tennessee. Considering, it is the closest beach to Tennessee! It is a low-key beach situated just outside of Savanah! Apart from relaxing on the beach, you can also access different amenities in Savanah, such as museums, historic architecture, upscale shops, ghost tours, and other attractions perfect for family outings. Beautiful rentals are close to the beach and a 1-minute distance from where you can enjoy some stunning visuals.  The food available in and around the place is quite popular! Simon’s Island, Georgia: Closest Beach To Knoxville, TN Distance from Knoxville: 491.2 Miles Travel Time: 7 Hours 32 Minutes The beach is situated at a distance of 7 hours and 42 minutes from Knoxville, TN! The beach Oasis is a perfect place to relax, especially with all the amenities present to make your life easier.  The Neptune Park Fun Zone here is for family attractions. You can also find a store to rent accessories for water sports restaurants, and several shops provide you with good food and the necessary equipment for the beach vacation, such as sunscreen, sunglasses, and others. There is one family beach rental along with its private swimming pool. The rental can host a family, which is pretty close to the lighthouse.  You cannot miss the delicious food available on this closest beach to Knoxville, TN! For me, the Jaffna food tour was like walking into the locals' way of life. If the Jaffna temples show how the city is sincere about its culture, the food, and the art of having it, they show how rooted the entire Tamil community in Jaffna is.  How they mix the rice and curry with their right hands and consume the food is an art you will love, and it is the way to truly appreciate the flavor profile.  Furthermore, Jaffna has maintained its spicy soul in food despite years of colonization by European forces and civil wars. The Tamil cuisine here is not similar to the coconut-milk-rich curries you find in South India. Also, they use roasted spice powder instead of raw ones.  From the first bite, my taste buds knew it, and the no-frills service at restaurants made me feel comfortable and concentrate only on the steaming hot food.  So, do you want to try these authentic Jaffna dishes and experience how this Northern Sri Lankan city preserves an authentic Tamil culture? The acidic and mildly sweet taste of these dishes goes well with spicy black chickpea curries, Pol Sambol, and Onion Sambol.  You can also definitely have Pol Roti or coconut Roti and Dosas for breakfast. Here are the places that you can visit for breakfast in Jaffna. 1. It tastes great with Pol Sambol and Sothi or coconut milk gravy. This eatery has marble tables and old photos on display. So, it almost feels like time travel. It remains open from 7:30 AM to 9 PM, and on Saturdays, it opens at 8:30 AM.  They served me food on banana leaves and in steel utensils. Also, remember that they only accept cash. You must make a visit to the Malayan Cafe a part of your Jaffna travel itinerary.  2. The Red Rice Puttu Experience I tried the red rice puttu at a small local eatery. These eateries are called Saapadu Kades in the local language. I was blown away by the earthy and subtly sweet taste of the puttu.  The spicy chickpea curry perfectly complemented it. I also tried some Babat (Tripe) curry and fish kool.  The Lunch Stops And Specials  The food of Jaffna and Northern Sri Lanka has become so popular that Peter Kuruvita now conducts a food tour of the region. A tour of the Jaffna Market and attending the local cultural dance here is a prominent part of his food tour itinerary.  However, this tour offered by the Australian Chef is expensive, and you will have to spend between AUD 1885 and 6720 to be a part of the tour.  As a budget traveler, you can see much more and experience the food scene here better by walking around the city and talking to the locals.  There is so much authenticity in these DIY tours. Also, one great thing about the lunch staples in Jaffna is the variety. While the crab curry gets all the glory, there is something very comforting about the Sattvik food served here, including rice, different types of curries, and dal.  Let’s find out what to eat and where to eat.  1. Jaffna Crab Curry Jaffna crab curry is just the way I want to have the crab. It needs to be spicy and hot without adulterating the authentic taste of a crab. I had the crab curry at Cosy Hotel & Restaurant on Stanley Road.  However, let me tell you that Cosy Hotel is expensive, and I did not mind because we were a group of 5, travelers bonded over food, and our local guide. If you are traveling solo, the pocket-pinch will be around USD 20.  You can even try the crab curry at the small eateries in the streets of Jaffna. They don’t “look” impressive, and you may raise eyebrows about the hygiene. Still, they serve piping hot food, and the locals have it. So, they are safe. 2. Vegetarian Thali On A Banana Leaf At Nallur Bhavan During my temple visit in Jaffna, I found the Nallur Bhavan very close to the Nallur Kovil. They serve Sattvik food on banana leaves and in steel plates.  Most people were having Dosa here. However, I had some Chilli Kothu Parotta, and it was yum.  For a more comforting and filling experience, you can try rice with rasam and different types of sabzi here. The restaurant opens from 7 AM to 10 PM, and you can contact them at +94-212225556.  Evening Snacks And Cool Downs In Jaffna  The evenings in Jaffna are suitable for ice creams and snacks like Vadai. The Special Rio Sundae with neon jelly, nuts, and ultra-sweet syrup is out of this world.  It’s great for me or anyone with a sweet tooth, but if you are up for something milder, it may be too sweet to appease your cravings.  The Rathinam Industrial Organisation (RIO) opened its doors in 1970. So, tasting the ice cream here is like cherishing the 55-year-old heritage of a city.  So, what Rio offers is nostalgia and not a gourmet experience.  Don't go to Rio Ice Cream expecting Italian Gelato. It is sugary, gelatinous, and nostalgic. Go for an authentic Jaffna cultural experience of seeing 500 locals enjoying it on a Friday night. 2. It is a crispier, crunchier, and thinner version of the South Indian Vada you have been eating so far. It has dried cumin and chillies.  Kondakadalai Dosa is a different take on the Adai Dosa, and here, kondakadalai or white chickpeas are the main ingredients. Vegan Food Options In Jaffna  Some authentic vegetarian dishes in Jaffna are also vegan. So, if you are a vegan and you want to try the authentic local food, Jaffna will be your paradise.  You can have steamed rice and curry made with long beans, drumsticks, spinach, and dhai. These coconut-milk-based curries are simple and flavorful.  Dosa and Idli are, of course, the Tamil staple any vegan can eat. These are made using rice and lentils. Ponggal, a savory rice dish, and pumpkin and tapioca dishes are the other variations you can try in Jaffna. You may not find them unless you have pre-ordered somewhere. It is a breakfast staple.  So, when you are new to Jaffna, you need to be familiar with the local customs about food and eating. 1. You Cannot Fear The Ghee In Jaffna Jaffna Dosas, in many restaurants, are served drenched in ghee. The use of ghee or clarified butter makes the dish more flavorful and richer. Yes, the food in Jaffna and the northern part of Sri Lanka is spicier than the food in the south. So, despite the use of coconut milk or tamarind pulp, your taste buds can have the heat of black pepper and dried chillies. So, what you say is fiery hot in Colombo is actually medium spicy in Jaffna. Also, the heat of the spice and the flavors are so prominent because the spices are first roasted and then turned into a paste before being used in curries. In this context, you must know that Jaffna Market is the ideal place for buying roasted spices and everything that makes Jaffna food stand out. Bring home essentials such as roasted curry powder, dried chillies, and palmyra jaggery. You can even enrich your kitchen by bringing home things like palmyra root flour and some tubar snacks home.  4. Where Can I Drink Alcohol With My Meal? Jaffna has a conservative society, and they are true to their culture. So, you will not find alcohol in the local eating houses. You have to visit hotels like the Valampuri Hotel or specific bars such as Machang Jaffna at Station Road if you want to have alcohol. Remember, alcohol in Jaffna is more expensive than in other parts of Sri Lanka. However, you can talk to the locals and try Arrack or local beer.  5. What Is Odiyal Kool? Odiyal Kool is a seafood soup and a dinner staple in Jaffna. This soup has vegetables, prawns, crabs, and a generous amount of roasted spices. The flavor balance in the soup comes from the use of coconut milk in the gravy. Also, the gravy is made thicker by adding palmyra root flour.Furthermore, this dish is made using a slow cooking method, and at least 3-4 hours are needed to make this dish.  6. Can I Drink The Tap Water? No, you cannot drink the tap water in Jaffna. There are chances of bacterial contamination. Furthermore, groundwater contamination is very common in the Jaffna Peninsula. There can be a massive presence of chemicals due to agricultural and other human activities. In addition, the groundwater of Jaffna has high limestone content. So, when you are in Jaffna, you must only drink packaged or bottled drinking water.  7. What Is The Best Time To Visit Malayan Café? The best time to visit Malayan Café is between 8:00 AM and 10:00 AM. It is the time for the freshest breakfast buzz.Also, having a glass of filter coffee here early in the morning can lead to a great start to your day.  8. How Much Does A Meal Cost In Jaffna? The cost of your meal in Jaffna will depend on the place you are having the food from. But you definitely don’t imagine it to be a not in a desert that is notoriously hot. The hottest places on Earth range from crowded cities to breathtaking desert landscapes. Its temperatures routinely rise above 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Thanks to its record-breaking temperatures, Death Valley in California is widely regarded as the hottest place on Earth. But you might be surprised by some of the other places on this list. Some of these locations are notorious for their year-round intense heat. Others have mild winter temperatures that rise to extremes as the weather warms. Here are the top hottest locations on the planet, the “hottest country in the world,” if you will. Hottest Country In The World: A Round-Up If you are looking to travel to these countries or just want to stay in the know, the heat will be real. Here are some of the hottest places in the world. El Azizia, Libya Average daytime temperature 26.1C In 1913, Death Valley experienced the highest temperature ever recorded worldwide, reaching 134 degrees Fahrenheit (56.7 degrees Celsius). The World Meteorological Organization's Global Weather & Climate Extremes Archive had announced the rise.  While some scientists question the accuracy of historical temperature records, it is widely accepted that Death Valley is among the hottest places on Earth, given reports of temperatures reaching 130 degrees Fahrenheit (54.5 degrees Celsius) in the summer of 2020. Kebili, Tunisia Average daytime temperature 26.6C Due to El Azizia's disqualification, the town in central Tunisia remains the site of Africa's highest temperature ever recorded—55 degrees Celsius—in 1931. Kebili, one of the oldest cities on the continent, was a major slave hub and briefly came under Roman rule. Its southerly palm-tree oasis is accessible via an appealing mud-brick arch. Beyond that opens up the enormous Chott el Djerid, the largest salt pan in the Sahara. Summers are still scorching, with many days reaching 40C. Dallol, Ethiopia Average daytime temperature 25.6C The isolated Danakil Depression in northern Ethiopia is famous for two reasons. Firstly, it is thought to be the place where humans first evolved (many hominin fossils have been found there). Secondly, it is the hottest place on Earth  with an average annual temperature of 34.4C between 1960 and 1966. It was cut down at its remote village of Dallol, which was mainly abandoned after salt miners first settled there. White salt lakes, sulfurous hot springs, and erupting gas-belching geysers can be found in the surrounding volcanic depression. Khartoum, Sudan Average daytime temperature 36.6C Sudan's large, ostentatious capital is located near the sultriest city on Earth, Ahvaz, Iran, with an average temperature of 32.8C. The capital is photogenically located at the confluence of the Blue and White Niles. Thermometer readings consistently register 40C or higher from April to June; January, the coolest month, is still the hottest in the UK. Tourists can visit camel markets, see whirling dervishes at Hamed el-Nil Tomb, explore the enormous Souq al-Arabi, and view 3,500-year-old artifacts at the National Museum beneath gleaming glass skyscrapers. Assab, Eritrea Average annual high 34.7C When you add together the average yearly temperature of Assab during the day and at night, it becomes the hottest city on Earth. Even at 3 a.m. in July and August, you will be sleeping in 30-degree heat. Since Assab normally receives just three rainy days annually, sweat is probably going to be the only precipitation on display as well. Although Ethiopia and Eritrea are frequently at odds along their borders, you would be far better off exploring other parts of the Red Sea. The coast is the region's primary tourist attraction. Kuwait City, Kuwait Average daytime temperature 32.1C In the massive Kuwaiti capital, cars melt in the oven-like five-month summers, sandstorms swirl in, and the streets go eerily empty. Most people wisely only venture outside their houses to visit blissfully cool shopping centers. Every month from May to September, it relentlessly rises above 46C. In 2021 it rose to 50C. Qurayyat, Oman Average daytime temperature 33.1C The world's highest daily temperature is in Qurayyat. On June 26, 2018, for instance, the temperature in this location never fell below 42.6C in a 24-hour period. Qurayyat, also known as Quriyat, is a small fishing town on the Gulf of Oman, southeast of Muscat. It has lovely beaches, a mangrove swamp, a picturesque dam that provides much-needed water, and, most remarkably, a 200-year-old crenulated fort with large wooden doors. Does anyone remember Indiana Jones and the Nights of Calefaction? Comodoro Rivadavia, Argentina Average daytime temperature 49°C This is probably the hottest country in the world, being home to Comodoro Rivadavia. During the 1905 heatwave, this port city in Patagonia recorded the highest temperature ever recorded in South America, 49°C. 2022 was scorching once more, despite the fact that that was distinctly out of the ordinary for a place prone to cold winters; even Argentina's capital, Buenos Aires, which is located 900 miles north, could withstand a 41.6C day in January. Comodoro, a center for crude oil also has a National Museum of Petroleum and is surrounded by beach resorts. Wrapping Up Traveling requires a leap of faith from everyone. The tourist spends a sizable sum of money to travel to an unknown location in the hopes of pleasant weather, harmonious relations, and happy memories of exceptional encounters.
