AirTran Airways was an American low-cost airline originally headquartered in Orlando, Florida, which ceased operations after the acquisition of Southwest Airlines. AirTran Airways was founded in 1993 as Conquest Sun Airlines under the management of two small airlines, Destination Sun Airways and Conquest Airlines. They operated mainly Boeing 717s and 737s. It shuttled flyers around the US Midwest as well as the East Coast and stayed in business for 21 years. Why does it not operate anymore? What happened to AirTran? AirTran: A Brief Look Back Conquest Airlines' co-founder Victor Rivas was one of the founders of Conquest Sun. Who bought AirTran? AirTran Corporation in 1994 purchased the airline and renamed it AirTran Airways. It later exited from AirTran Corporation's new holding company, Airways Corporation. The holding company of ValuJet acquired the airline, and the holding company of Airways Corporation in 1997, which owned the struggling ValuJet Airlines. ValuJet's holding company became AirTran Holdings and merged with ValuJet Airlines' AirTran Airways. ValuJet Airlines, in turn, became "AirTran Airlines" before merging with AirTran Airways. Southwest Airlines acquired AirTran Airways and parent company AirTran Holdings on May 2, 2011. It gradually integrated them with AirTran's last revenue flight on December 28, 2014. It operates nearly 700 flights per day, primarily in the eastern and midwestern United States, with its main hub at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport serving nearly 200 daily departures. AirTran's fleet consisted of Boeing 717-200 aircraft, of which it was the largest operator in the world, and Boeing 737-700 aircraft. AirTran Airways was founded by the management of both Destination Sun Airways and regional carrier Conquest Airlines. The founding of Destination Sun Airways is unclear. Which claims Destination Sun was founded in 1991 by former Northeastern International Airways CEO Guy Lindley and that the airline was formerly known as SunExpress and was based in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Another source claimed that Destination Sun was founded in 1990 by a group of pilots, presumably former Eastern Air Lines pilots, as AirTran management later claimed that it was founded by former Eastern Air Lines employees. Rafael Rivas and Victor Rivas founded Conquest Airlines in April 1988 in Texas. Victor Rivas, one of the founders of Conquest Airlines, was also closely involved in the founding of Conquest Sun Airlines. In 1994, AirTran Corporation, the holding company of Minneapolis-based Mesaba Airlines, acquired Northwest Airlink from Northwest Airlines, with hubs in Minneapolis and Detroit. After the purchase, the airline changed from Conquest Sun Airlines to AirTran Airways to match the name of the holding company. The airline moved its headquarters to Orlando and grew to 11 Boeing 737s serving 24 cities in the eastern as well as midwestern United States, offering low-cost vacations to Orlando. In 1995, AirTran Corporation established a new subsidiary called Airways Corporation and placed it under the new subsidiary; AirTran Corporation then separated from the new Airways Corporation, becoming an independent holding that also owns AirTran Airways. After the separation, AirTran Corporation became Mesaba Holdings after its subsidiary Mesaba Airlines separated from AirTran Airways. AirTran Corporation/Mesaba Holdings then became MAIR Holdings, which liquidated in July 2012. Latest Developments On September 27, 2010, Southwest Airlines announced the acquisition of AirTran Airways and parent company AirTran Holdings for a total of $1.4 billion. The deal gave Southwest a significant presence in many AirTran hubs, including Atlanta (at the time the largest US city without Southwest service) and Milwaukee, as well as expanded service to Baltimore and Orlando. With the acquisition, Southwest added international service to several leisure destinations such as Cancún, Montego Bay, and Aruba. Southwest integrated AirTran's Boeing 737-700 series fleet with the Southwest Airlines brand and design, after which the Boeing 717 fleet leased out to Delta Air Lines beginning in mid-2013. The airlines planned to complete as well as close the deal within two years, with the two airlines operating as separate carriers in the interim. The deal closed on 2 May 2011, and the airline won a license on 1 March  2012. The full integration of all employee groups between the two airlines ended in 2015. On February 14, 2013, Southwest Airlines announced that it had entered into a codeshare agreement with AirTran. They took the first step on January 25, 2013, launching joint routes in five markets. As of February 25, 2013, Southwest continued to launch joint routes with 39 other markets. By April 2013, joint routes were to be available in all Southwest and AirTran cities (both domestic and international). Southwest announced that the integration would end on December 28, 2014, when AirTran Airways Flight 1 will be the airline's last Boeing 717-200 (N717JL) departure from Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport (ATL) to Tampa International Airport ( TPA). The flight used the call sign "Critter" as a nod to ValuJet. This route and flight number was Valujet's first flight. “Ma, will you miss me when I am in the camps and do the trek with my school friends?” I was a little surprised, as every mom would be when a 13-year-old these days says such emotional things! I looked at her and then straight at her rucksack and the entire mess around it.  She read my expression. “Ma, I don’t know what to pack for camping. My class teacher gave us a list, and I cannot find it now.”  There is no point in telling her that she cannot be so careless with plans of camping and trekking in her mind. I texted her teacher, and until she replied, I got started with the basics.  My years of experience as a traveler and travel writer were waiting for this day of glory 😉! Nevertheless, sometimes, being a mother, you have to do things! Now, a whole week of camping may sound amazing. Fresh air, quiet mornings, that forest smell that sticks to everything. Honestly, it’s like hitting the reset button.  Then reality hits. Seven days out there? What even do you bring?You want fun, not a trip full of “why did I leave that jacket at home?” or “Ugh, no power again.”So, what actually goes in your bag without turning it into a nightmare? Here are some practical tips you need to remember.  What To Pack For Camping? Things You Need To Carry For Survival  You need a good shelter, food that keeps you going, and some survival tools when you are camping. Also, keep some books or board games handy to spend those long evenings.  1. Shelter And Sleep Essentials A solid tent is a must. Rain, wind, surprise weather! Your tent better not bail on you. Some tents are super roomy but heavy. Your shoulders will hate you. If you’re hiking far, weight matters more than space. I had to spend 30 minutes convincing my daughter about the same and had to make her talk to my fellow trekker, whom she, of course, trusts more than me.  Now, it’s about the sleeping bag. You have to consider the weather and ground conditions when choosing the right one.  If the bag is made of synthetic material, it will help to manage wet weather. But, if you are choosing down bags, those will be more compressible and occupy less space. However, they will not forgive your wet conditions.  In addition, you have to carry sleeping pads. Sleep on the hard ground for two nights, and you will know why you need these sleeping pads.  Pillow, of course, is an optional choice. I made a makeshift pillow for my daughter by stuffing some old clothes in a bag.  2. Clothing Weather changes, and fast. Cold mornings. Hot afternoons. Damp nights. You get the idea. Layers that dry fast are your friend. Zip-off pants, light jackets, even a swimsuit, sound extra, I know. But there’s that one river crossing or random rainstorm where you’ll be glad.  Socks. Bring more than you think. Blisters ruin everything. Shoes matter too. Waterproof boots, yes. But a lighter pair for hanging around camp? Total win. 3. Food Freeze-dried meals are easy, lightweight, and actually tasty now. Add fruit, nuts, or some cooked food if you can. I got my daughter a few protein bars. I made those at home using roasted sesame seeds, jaggery, and peanuts.  Also, I stir-fried some boiled peas with salt and some seasoning and packed them in a zipper pack. These munchies really help, and unlike the ready-made snacks in the market, these don’t make you feel dehydrated.  Breakfast? Keep it simple. Oatmeal, instant coffee, snack bars. Done.Lunch is usually wraps, nut butter, and trail mix. Easy stuff. Dinner? One-pot meals are gold. Less cleanup, less stress. Don’t forget small things like oil, salt, or spices. Little stuff goes a long way.  Water. Super important. Bring enough. Know where to refill. Hiking miles because you misjudged water? No thanks. 4. Tools And Survival Necessities A good knife, a small multi-tool, and a headlamp with extra batteries, and you’ll use these more than half the fancy gadgets you’re tempted by. Use maps or a compass, even if you have a phone. Phones die. Signal disappears. Happens. Electronics? Charging them can be annoying. Also, portable energy solutions can save your sanity at some point, trust me. 5. Safety Essentials Hygiene. Boring, but trust me! After day three, you’ll care. Soap, toothbrush, wipes, quick-dry towel. Sunscreen and bug spray! You cannot forget any of these essentials.  You will also need a first-aid kit. Blisters, cuts, aches, all of it! Bring painkillers, allergy meds, and anything personal you need.  Hand sanitizer is more than just about germs. Whistle or signal tool? It might feel extra, but one day you’ll be glad you have it. 6. Entertainment Evenings can be long. Books, journals, cards, and small instruments will help you to pass the time. Hammocks are great for some chill instantly. You will love staring at trees or taking photos when relaxing in a hammock.  Also, you can bring camp chairs. Sometimes, comfort wins over minimalism, especially when you are doing back-to-back camping or trekking.  What To Pack For Camping? Don’t Feel Overwhelmed  Are you camping for the first time, and that too for seven days? The packing procedure can get a bit overwhelming.  It’s okay. However, making a list of essentials or talking to your tour operator will help. Also, you can reach out to anyone in your camping group. When traveling solo, you can post your queries in Facebook travel groups.  Still, it all starts with getting a good quality tent, and you have to learn how to set it up properly. Also, carry layered clothes as temperatures change and weather conditions can change dramatically after sundown, or there can be sudden turns of events.  Furthermore, you will need lights and lightsaver tools, and you must keep your meals simple.  Moreover, you have to keep some things or aspects spontaneous while camping. Everything will not happen as planned. You may have to collect a dead branch and wash it to use in cooking if you have left the spatula at home! Things like these will happen, and how you overcome them is the real fun of camping. We planned XXXX brewery tours - visit Brisbane as a tribute to an Australian icon. I was traveling with my partner, and neither of us had ever done a brewery tour in Australia before.  So, naturally, the start was a little jittery. Still, we opted for it for a unique and fun experience. Also, we scheduled our XXXX brewery tours - visit Brisbane on our last day in Australia.  Moreover, we planned that our tour would start at 11 AM so that we had the rest of the day for leisure.  Still, we got late somehow and had to skip our breakfast to catch up with the tour. And, rushed and huffing and puffing, we reached the brewery 10 minutes late. We were hot and sweaty.  Moreover, at first we lost our way to the entrance, making us late by another five minutes. The moment I started thinking of it as a lost opportunity, the amazing people there told me that we could still join the 11 AM tour.  So, though the day did not start on a great note, it did not feel bad anymore.  How To Reach The XXXX Brewery? That is why I am sharing the details about how you will reach the brewery.  The brewery is located opposite the Milton Railway Station. Furthermore, you will have to take a brief walk from the Suncorp Stadium.  Once you reach the brewery, you need to locate the entrance. So, the XXXX brewery tour started. It was a delightful step-by-step process, and we enjoyed it thoroughly.  1. Getting Ready For The Tour  When we reached the brewery, we got baseball caps with an XXXX branding. We also had to wear lanyards, fluorescent vests, and goggles.  In addition, they gave me plimsolls to wear as I had open-toe shoes on. I loved my look when I was ready in the gear.  Also, the best thing was that there were not many people on the tour. A guy called Rickie took charge of our tour. He was quite goofy, but he had in-depth knowledge of the brewery and ale-making.  2. And The Tour Started  He started the tour with a crisp video of the XXXX story and took us around. We saw how everyone was in action inside the brewery. He actually showed us the process of beer making.  You have to take the tour yourself to understand the things I saw. 3. Exploring The History And Making Of The Beer  We saw the bottles whizzing, and there were brewing tanks. Then, the bottles were moving on the conveyor belts for storage and labelling.  Afterward, Rickie took us to a small museum, and we learned about the history of beer there. The bottle designs were diverse, and they had the XXXX mascot and other paraphernalia.  Once again, unless you are a part of the tour, you will not understand why the XXXX brewery is the most iconic brewery of Queensland, and it has a history of 145 years.  The tour took us around 90 minutes, and then came the most exciting part, the beer tasting. Then, Rickie took us to the bar. There, we sample four different types of beers brewed there.  I cannot remember the names because, anyway, the Australian diction is not the easiest thing to decipher for my Indian sensibilities. However, I liked the taste of each variant.  I was missing my colleagues and friends badly. Those people, the beer towers kept me going, where evenings turned into nights and the work hours were never-ending.  Nevertheless, once we finished sampling, Rickie handed us a full-sized bottle of beer. It was so much fun at the bar.  And that was not all. The bartender had an extra glass of beer ready, and he offered it to me as a great gesture.  My partner even tried a glass of champagne there, as everyone present was celebrating the Melbourne Cup. It is indeed “The Race that stops a nation.” They poured so many glasses that even a handsome crowd could not finish them.  Our Brunch Plan Changed Into A Lunch Session Soon  With adequate beer tasting and having champagne, both of us were drunk. This was surely the booziest brunch I ever had.  We were naughty and even felt hungry. So, we decided to have lunch at the XXXX bar. I ordered a salmon dish. Of course, I don’t remember the name, and my partner opted for a huge burger to soak in the alcohol.  The Lovely Atmosphere Of The Bar  We loved the atmosphere of the bar. The tour did not have many people. However, many people were already present at the bar, and they were watching the Melbourne Cup on a big screen. Still, all of us found comfortable seats and had a fun meal. Probably, great beer makes you feel in a way, but I enjoyed everything about the hours I spent there.  Also, the staff was really friendly. So, if you are in Brisbane and relax in a safe space, you must plan a XXX brewery tour.  Things To Keep In Mind For XXXX Brewery Tours - Visit Brisbane  If you want to join the XXXX brewery tours - Visit Brisbane, you need to have an ID proof, and you have to be above 18 years.  Furthermore, you can book the tours in advance through Viator.  You can take the tours from Wednesdays to Saturdays.  It is better to wear covered shoes. Otherwise, you will have to wear plimsolls like me.  The only disadvantage I found in the brewery was the absence of wheelchairs or clutches. Also, you will have to take steps. So, the tour will be difficult for you if you have mobility issues.
